For this project I wanted to keep the build cost below $100 and also ensure you don't need many tools or a truck to build these shelves. Overall I am very happy with the end product and think this project is approachable even with a very small amount of experience. Let me know if you have any questions in the comments and below are some additional details.
Overall Dimensions
Height = 8 ft
Width = 8 ft
Depth = 2 ft
List of Supplies
1) 2x4 boards: 25 total 8 ft long for the following components:
a) 6 for the legs
b) 8 for the sides of the shelves
c) 5 cut into 20 separate 21 in pieces
d) 6 cut into 24 separate 20 in pieces
2) 1/2 inch 4 ft x 8 ft sheets osb: 2 total
- Note these will need to be both cut into 2 ft x 8 ft strips for
the shelf top
3) 2 3/4 inch general construction screws
- I used 2 3/4 in but 2 1/2 in would work and are usually
much easier to find
Example: homedepot.sjv.io/2L9dQ
Tools Used
1) Irwin Medium Duty Clamp: amzn.to/2ITY2Bk
2) Makita 18V combo drill kit: amzn.to/2Jsw78j

Scott, awesome project! I’m building two on my basement.
Good man! Best of luck on the project 👍
@@EverydayHomeRepairs co
I've been looking to buy shelves for my basement, but this is a much better and cheaper option 🙂 Planning to do the same, but I'll need to make some adjustments to the measurements.
A simpler time when lumber wasn’t so expensive 😅
No kidding
Built two of these last fall for less than $100 each. Over $200 to build one today.
Fortunately, it's coming down again. Built one this weekend for about $130.
@@scrapdog76 thank goodness. I was contemplating just buying pallet racks cause the wood got so expensive. I need some real big shelving. Screw it I'm doing wood.....
Under 100 dollars, sheeeit
Out of all the shelves I've seen on YT, this one appears to be the sturdiest. With your easy to follow instructions this girl is confident she can do this. I have my materials and will be building my shelf this weekend (Nov. 18, 2023). Thanks for posting👏👏👏
How'd you go?
@@whitey4986 I did good. I'm very happy with my shelf. I plan to build another one for my garage.
how'd the project turn out?
Oh no, comments two months ago and she still hasn't replied, she ded! XD
@@CryptoKrill I bet you it never happened. She never built shit bro. lol
one of the only videos out there even today that show the proper way to support the shelves with jack studs -- and on top of that how to get it cut without owning Festools lol thanks for this wealth of info to us weekend warriors!
in case any one else is planning to build a garage storage shelf like this watch the other DIY ones and you will see that MOST ppl only use face on screws to hold up the shelves - will it work sure - will it last maybe - but I sure as hell would sleep better at night knowing it will never collapse and fall onto my car!
This video is awesome, I just built my shelves using this video. Thank you.
Hey Scott: I have followed you for about 2 years now along with other video people with the same subjects that you have and I like your approach best in all categories. I'm not a carpenter or electrician (just a retired aircraft mechanic) but I can tell the difference between a hack and a professional. I have used a few of your videos in my daughters new home and I'm her champion now. I'm also a private person and don't want my computer flooded with emails, bells, whistles or gongs going off faster than I'm able to keep up with them. You are my one and only person I am subscribed with on RUclips and am looking forward to your help in my future projects.
This video blog is one of the most intelligent builds I've seen on RUclips. Great planning, and great building skills were able to make a difficult project simple and easy and fast!
Thanks David, best of luck on your projects.
Thank you so much! I was able to build shelves for our shed using your instructions. I built two 4 ft tall shelves (with two shelves) by "splitting the recipe". Very easy and very sturdy. Thanks again!
Single mom, broke with no tools except a good drill.. But a whole lot of ( heavy) home canned food. Thank you!!!!!
Best of luck on the project. Warning, lumber prices have went up almost 3X since this video. Kind of crazy right now to be honest.
3 years..Finally a simple economical no mistake storage project. No measuring no helper no truck. Im going tomorrow FINALLY to buy and build mine. Awesome. Looking forward to other designs for my home. Thnxx
Thank you so much for this video Scott! I'm not great at building things but I was able to build two of these for basement storage, slightly modified to a lower ceiling. Keeping things level I found was the hardest thing on an uneven floor, but it was good enough in the end.
Thank you for taking the time to show us this way of building shelves. It’s so nice for someone that doesn’t have a truck.
This is actually one of the best videos I've seen to create garage storage shelving. So simple and with a decent construction narrative. I'll certainly be using this video to build storage in my garage once I can get to the lumber yard!
Thanks for the kind words Rodrigo, best of luck on the project!
A better & easer storage shelve is Ana White videos much easer i think.
I’ve never seen a floating shelf made this way, I love it! Thank you for all the woodworking tips, great for beginners like me. 5:24
Hey Tran, great to hear you got value out of the video. Best of luck on your project!
Thank you for showing how to do a very simple but very good storage shelf. I appreciate you showing how to use the big box store to cut the wood and how you batched out the sections to make it much easier to assemble.
I recently bought some very sturdy metal shelves from Costco but they cost more than these did for you and they aren't as tall or as long. Next time I'm building shelves like you did!
Thank you Scott! I just built the storage shelves in my garage and followed your instructions all the way!
They are awesome, strong and I love the way you explain everything step by step. Thank you again!
I just love how many people you are helping! These comments are straight up inspiring! Keep up the great work. Great vibrations to all you good people
Hey Jordan, thanks for the kind words and I completely agree it really helps motivate when you know you are helping so many people save time and money. Cheers!
Was looking to replace shelving in my shed. Checking out different videos and came across your channel. Probably the best video out there for making shelves. Simple and to the point. The shelving is perfect for what we need as I didnt want to start drilling into brick walls to add timber lengths for the shelving.
Nice Mike, best of luck on the project and let me know if you have any questions! 👍
I haven't even watched the whole video yet, but the intro has me sold!
This is a great video! I’m 67 years old and a do it myselfer. This video made my project completely doable. Fast and easy and I finally got all that stuff in the basement organized and off the floor. Thank you Scott!
This is really great and perfect for me since I don't have much experience and don't have any saws at all. Thank you so much for making this super helpful video, Scott! 🙏
I've searched for a great free-standing shelf design for a while now and this is far and way the very best design I've seen. Excellent Job!

Getting ready to build storage shelves in my basement, so I’ve been bing-watching YT vids on the subject. Yours is the winner. I’ll be building your plan, may do the cuts myself, but otherwise your plan.
Yeah, I really liked how the shelves turned out and they are still holding strong 💪
This is simple and exactly what i needed/wanted in my carport! I especially like how you are extremely thorough with explaining every single detail and step.. It was very easy to follow along and you got straight to the point without wasting my time with a bunch if unnecessary jibber jabber... Thank you very much i will b subscribing for sure!!!
Thanks Danielle, best of luck on your project!
You have the best shelf designed that I have seen, step by step you are exactly what I have been looking for... my first shelf built I started with a strip across and screwing it into the wall and add more on the side so the shelf would sit on top, after building one shelf I didn't like it because I had drill holes into my wall so I stop the project and decided to find another method than I saw your channel.... I loved how you presented the information, it makes more sense than having to drill holes into my wall....
Built this yesterday for my garage. Thank you so much. Your plans and instruction made this so easy for me. Definitely took me the whole day though lol
Scott, i am happy to report that i finished building my shelving 8 ft by 8ft by 2 ft yesterday and I could not be more pleased. it is super solid and I am proud of it. it took me about 4.5 hours overall so I was considerably slow but the speed didn't matter to me. i took my time building it. i also had to cut pieces myself because after I loaded the wood in the cart, lowe's saw was not functioning yesterday. i just love it and I can see the potential for things to come with it. you are a huge inspiration for it. i am dropping back again to say a big thank you.

Awesome, way to knock out the project Amy!
Just finished this in half a day for my garage! Great project and pretty easy, especially getting all the lumber cut at the store. Thanks!
No Problem Tony, way to knock it out 👊!
Do they charge extra to cut the lumber at the store? I can cut my own, just worried about not being able to haul the 4x8 sheets of plywood.

Happy to help Kirk and best of luck with the project.
Simple design resulting in a simple and very easy build. A practical and great project.
Bravo. Many other tubers made it way too complicated. This is awesome!
Very very clever! I have no space for cutting long 2x4. This is great! Well done!
Thanks Anthony, best of luck with the build.
Awesome! One thing I personally do is I add some extra 2x4 diagonally across the sheet if I expect to put a lot of weight. Over time, the sheet expands and contrast while holding weight will being to cave in and deform.
Awesome! Perfect for pure basement food storage. Thank you!
Excellent video. Great organization. I can’t express this enough. Thank you
Really appreciate the kind words. Best of luck on your project.
Thank you for suggesting the corner clamp! It's well worth the money.

The best shelf I have seen by far on here thanks for sharing.👌
Just finnished building the shelf after watching your video. Great simple instructions. It turned up very nice. Thank you very much
Perfect! Congrats on knocking out the project. 👍
The reinforcement is crucial! Thanks. In my previous home, the previous homeowners built some shelves similar to this, except there was no reinforcement. Overtime the thing was falling apart. It took me more time to reinforce them than ripping them out and rebuilding new ones. Now I need a shelf like this for my new home. Thanks for all the measurements so I can just have HD precut them instead of me cutting them and having to clean up the saw dust.
Exactly, for projects like this having HD do the cuts saves a TON of time and mess. Best of luck on the project!
@EverydayHomeRepairs about hou much weight, per shelf, do you estimate this will hold? I'm wanting to put a 165 pound CRT TV on one of the shelves and wanted to knof if that would be too much as it will be a permanent home for this tv.
Thanks for the video. I went to Home Depot and the supplies were 200$. Instead of using 6 vertical 2*4. I used 4 and reduced the size to 3 shelf.
It is a lot of material of garage rack.
The sizing really helped.
This is so informational & helpful! Very detailed. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Now I can go build one or 2 of these for my parents.
Same!
Awesome plan and very helpful. I can't say thank you enough.
Hey Michael, thanks for the kind words.
Great project !
I would place the lowest shelf about 3 or 4 inches off the ground, this way the top shelf would be more useful.
Thank you for sharing your ideas with the rest of the world !
Hey Mar, happy the video was helpful. Best of luck on your project!
mar1video: That's what I did - I tweaked all the measurements so that the first shelf was at 6in. from the floor, then lowered the other shelves so that I could use that upper top shelf.
Great video, and I'd want to add that your 3" deck screw only has about 100lb shear strength, so I'd double them up. I realize they're not support in your video, but if you get enough weight on there, and it starts raking from earthquake, or what have you, things can go pear shaped pretty quick. Maybe double up using a spiral screw. Thanks!
Are you talking about the the one screw he did at the bottom?
@@erikhensler7 I really have no idea what I'm talking about. These are the only words I know in English.
Thank you Scott! Just followed your directions and came out great 👍
Awesome, thanks for the feedback 👍
Scott - thanks for the video. I built 4 of these, making them 10' tall by 12' long. Bottom shelf at 3'. Next shelf 2' up. Top shelf at top of uprights. Lag screwed them into the 6x6 supports in my shop. Done and solid as a rock. I have 48' of 3-level shelving on a 60' wall with 3' beneath where I can store things that need to be on the floor due to weight. I really like the inside supports in your design that keep the weight off the outside uprights. And your advice about leveling starting with the middle shelf is spot on. Well done!
Holy Cow! That is some serious shelf space. Is this in a standard machine shed or a different business?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs its along one long wall of a 30x60 shop. roof is 14' at the eave so I have 4' from the top shelf to the bottom of the truss. I'm going to separate them into pairs so there is a 12' gap in the middle. in the gap, i'm thinking about french cleat and magnetic strip wall for handing all my hand tools (not a fan of tool boxes). If I dont do the tool wall, I have an 8' rolling work bench I'd like to store in that space so its out of the way.
Great video, great heads up about HD making the cuts!! Quick question, how important do you think the middle supports are? I love the design just would rather have it open on the middle if possible.
Hey Dengriff, depending on how much you are planning on loading up the shelves you would probably be okay without the middle support. You could try it out and if you don't like the overall structural strength then just add in the middle supports. If you do test it without the middle support and could report back your findings that would be Awesome!
Why not put the middle support in the back instead of the front?
I ended up not adding the supports and have stood on it with it fully loaded and feel comfortable enough to not worry about it. Thanks again
Great tutorial, thank you! Made all the necessary adjustments for my shelves, went to Home Depot optimistic. The prices are over the roof, $10 for a 2x4, $40-$50 for one sheet of plywood. So the total cost will be way over $300. Idk if it's just the HD in my area but it's not worth it when a steel shelving is $300.
I went to my HD last weekend. 2x4 at $8.25 each, and plywood at $48.. so $254 right there 😐
He made this video 3 years ago
Unfortunately today (07/18/22), the lumber, screws, and corner clamp only with 6% tax cost $210.47 at Lowe's in Naples, FL
@@davidyoung3447 also trying to do this in Naples right now. Sadly, I'm not totally sure it's with the cost vs prebulit.
Nice!! This was such a great instructional video and so easy to follow. I think I'm gonna have a go at it this week in the garage.
Thanks Dominic, best of luck on the project!
Scott, Thanks for your video on How to Build Storage Shelves. I built two 8 foot storage shelves per your plan. Worked Great! Thank you!
Nice! Thanks for the feedback 👍
Scott this looks amazing! I’m wanting to do this for storage bins. Could the leg posts be side mounted instead of front? This would put the uneven dead space gap on the exterior rather than on the shelf space itself.
Hi Scott, great video! My basement has very low ceiling, 7' to be exact. Do you have any recommendations best way to accommodate the lower ceiling?
Hey Michael, are you going to primarily store totes? If so what is the height of your totes?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs they're about 17-19". I think I figured out the measurements but please let me know if they're off.
-6 72" for the legs
-8 96" for the sides of the shelves
-4 cut into 15 separate 21" pieces
-4 cut into 18 separate 20" pieces
Hey Michael, looks good to me. Best of luck on the project!
@@michaelsantos2546 Did you still need 8 96" for the side of shelves? I am in a similar situation where I am only doing a 72" tall shelf. I am keeping the same spacing between shelves so i am not doing the top shelf. Therefore i am only needing 6 96" studs. Just following up in case i am missing something!
Incredibly strong with those 20" uprights. Great design!
Thx!
Wow! Excellent project! Thanks for the great job in showing how to do it!
Can we secure this to a wall, for example in a garage?
Hey Avy, For sure you can secure to the wall. Shouldn't need much so I would find a couple studs and drive a 4" screw through one of the shelf frames and into the wall studs.
Thank you
Hi, I have two questions:
1) for the legs, do they have to be pressure treated since it touches the basement floor?
2) how would you anchor this to the concrete wall?
Hey Wonbo
1) I think it would be a good idea to make the legs out of pressure treated especially if your basement is humid/damp.
2) I just used metal strap like this amzn.to/34gAX2n and attached 1 to each end and then to the floor trusses.
Best of luck on the project!
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Thank you! So for number 2, that essentially anchors the shelf to the trusses, instead of the wall right?
Exactly, if you secure the strap (from the truss) such when the shelf just starts to tip then the strap pulls tight that will be enough to keep the shelf from tipping.
Made these for my back yard shed. Super easy and super strong and best of all is they are free standing. One suggested improvement is to drill with a countersink bit for the screws. I also left the top open for this big not so heavy items to use all the space to the ceiling. Again, utterly brilliant video.
Thanks David, glad the video helped 👍
Very detailed explanation and well written measurement detail in the description section. Well done 👍
I bought wood at two different locations: Home Depot and Lowes:
#1...I went to HD and the cost was $175; it was $150 at Lowes.
#2...at HD, I checked the 1st cuts(20"/21") and they were good, but many future cuts were off (I had to re-cut).
#3...at Lowes, they charge $.25 per cut and I checked the 1st cuts again and they also made many wrong cuts.
NOTE: The wrong cuts were due to the stop moving or sloppy alignment, plus the workers were not that into this.
DEFINITELY do the cuts yourself and save the hassle. That is my take.
Thanks for the information and feedback Bill. I actually agree, if you have the power tools and vehicle to carry the uncut material doing the cuts yourself is best. Best of luck on the project.
Thank you for the comparison & information. I would have assumed that HD was less expensive.
FYI - this is in the +$200 range today with the increase in lumber cost
You aren’t kidding, lumber prices have exploded since I made this video. Crazy!
Either way I loved this project and I spent the 280
Thanks for the video. We built one yesterday using reclaimed lumber.
Scott, great video - thanks for taking the time to record it. Just discovered you for the first time; have now subscribed mate
Hey reedar, glad the video helped. Thanks for the sub and good luck on future projects 👍!
First off... That's not "Plywood", it is O.S.B.! Oriented Strand Board! There is a difference!
Second, I have found that having the lumber pre-cut does save time, but you need to observe the employee doing the cuts. Some of these persons don't do their best to get the dimensions right.
Thirdly, you as the designer need to get your dimensions down perfectly right, else wise you'll get to make the adjustments yourself. And you'll be lucky if the dimension is just too long. Too short means going back to the store for another piece of lumber.
I built this! Will build another when lumber is cheaper. Works great, wife is happy. We can store 5 medium sized bins per shelf. The 4 clamps were key as the 2x4’s I used tended to warp. Had all of the wood cut at Lowe’s - doing this was key because it ensured that the lengths were consistent.
Nice and yes wood prices are a little crazy right now. Probably smart to let things cool off and build it for half the cost 👍
Thanks for the video, just finished my first rack and plan to build several more.
Super sturdy, excellent simple design for a shaky hands like mine.
So far the best I have seen!!
I JUST finished building this in my garage, and MAAAAAAAAAAAN, this thing is solid and sturdy. I can tell this thing is going to stand the test of time. The only change I made was turning the 3rd shelf into the top shelf. After putting the plyboard up, I screwed into the support under it, then sawed off the ends of the 8' legs so it's 6' tall now.
I didn't know I needed that Irwin corner clamp - till now - but I definitely do.
I have built two of these for our basement. Have one more to build. 1. 7’x9’, 2. 9’x9’ and the last is 11’x9’. All 2’ wide. Thanks so much!!!!
Such a beautiful job it looks amazing 1:51

Awesome, glad the video helped. Happy New Year!
Simple, sturdy free standing shelf plan, thx!
No problem DJ! Good luck on the project.
This is such an excellent tutorial. I so appreciate that this can be built without securing to the wall, since I have no studs in the basement area where I need the shelves. Thank you!!!
Hey Rose, glad the video helped you out. Just a reminder that it is good to add a "anti-tip" strap to the shelf once completed. If it is in your basement you could connect the strap between the top of the shelving unit and the floor joists. That way if someone (usually kids) jump on the shelves there is no chance of tipping over. Best of luck on the project.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs That's a great idea! I didn't think about securing to the floor joists. THANK YOU!
@@rose8662 happy to help!
One caveat that you should add: Before you go to the trouble of pulling all your lumber, first go and check that the panel saw and radial arm saw at your Home Depot or Lowes are both actually working! You may have to go to another nearby store. Also, I think it's worth the extra money to buy Douglas fir prime grade 2 x 4s, which tend to have fewer defects, twisting, and warping than lesser quality 2 x 4s.
I recently built three very similar six foot tall, eight foot wide, two foot deep two shelf units for our storage unit at a total cost of about $120 per unit (including fastening hardware). I wanted the ability to assemble and disassemble them on site without the need for power tools, so I used 1/4 inch hex bolts instead of screws to attach the uprights to the shelves. I pre-assembled the shelves with screws and pre-drilled holes for the hex bolts. The shelves and uprights were made of 1/2 inch OSB and 2 x 4s, but I saved a few bucks by using 2 x 3s for the shelf cross braces and vertical supports. The thing is like a rock! Each unit breaks down into two shelves, four uprights, and a U shaped base plate made of 2 x 3s so I can store heavy items on moving dollies underneath the first shelf.
Look good Scott. Thanks for the tips.
It took just under 5.5 hours to build. Looks fantastic. We put the front middle column to the back side. So the front is all open. Thanks for the detailed description. Can’t wait to fill up the shelves.
Yeah, I think a lot of people keep that front middle leg out to maximize the storage space.
@@EverydayHomeRepairshow much weight capacity are you sacrificing by leaving that out, if any?
Great video man. I have used clamps before but I never knew that there are corner clamps.
