@Anna Latacz finish your strokes before place your other skate! It forces you to push sidewards and have all the pressure possible. Press your stroke-side hip down for extra pressure
"This is ice skating, it's not bowling." Not gonna lie, I'm pretty tempted to print that on a shirt to wear to public skate...might even add "nobody likes a bowling ball" on the back
Going fast for the sake of going fast isn’t interesting to me. But gaining power and speed from using your edges and finishing every push like you said is what I admire. I guess that’s why I feel ice dancers are the best skaters. 🥰
Good stuff as always. Love the way you stop in this video. Could we have another in-depth look at hockey stops, stops on one foot, etc? It’s driving me nuts at the moment - can’t get the mechanics of it at all…
Thanks 😁 I have a few more videos covering different ways of stopping up on the website, including on one foot, but not a more in depth look at the hockey stop. Maybe a video talking about the mechanics of how all stops work could be helpful.
@BRYAN Yep, me too. I can do a pale imitation of a hockey stop, but nowhere near those amazing-looking cuts, with body leaning back, legs out front, and snow spraying up. Can’t figure them out at all.
@@honyakupjp Start with a plow stop if you are on hockey skates looking for that style of stop. When you can plow stop comfortably transition to a slight twist at the waist and start focusing on one foot doing more of the plow (more weight on that foot coming from the slight waist twist). After gaining comfort in this try to start the stop with plow -> dominant foot stopping using the slight waist rotation -> coming to an actual stop facing 90* to where you started (like a hockey stop) but while still looking like a full plow stop. The final transition is essentially a one footed plow stop while adding the other foot beside your leading dominant foot to aid it in stopping. There are a number of great plow stop transition videos. In teaching I've found it's the easiest beginner -> hockey stop transition. This method works well because it eliminates that harsh flip over your edges feeling like when people try to just cold turkey hockey stop which I'd never recommend. It gets you more acquainted with the sideways glide of the blade over the ice during a stop.
@@c.a.l.e.b.s Thanks for the advice. I can do the plow stop with the waist rotation no problem, but moving from that to a one foot plow stop is what’s troubling me. All my weight is on my back leg - it feels completely rooted to the ice, and I can’t figure out how to shift my weight to the front foot in order to be able to lift and place the back foot.
Same, still having issues getting the push and slide motion in the beginning as well as an exercise for stopping... How do you not get your edges to grip? Am I too fat? :D
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video! There is a forward lunge video on my channel somewhere, it is an older video, but the instructional content is still relevant. I have been thinking about reshooting all of the beginner content for my website actually. If I go ahead with it, I will add a few to RUclips as well.
Hahaha, good to know. One of my casual friends was more interested in speed skating than figure skating so its nice to know what to tell him once he joins me in the rink.
@@IceCoachOnline could you make a vid on stopping tips? I still feel like I'm in less control on that front. And I'm able to sit spin and have most of my single jumps. I wonder if it is because i weigh more than other skaters it is harder to stop or what. I am 5'10 180 male, pretty solid muscle, but all my instructors have been dancer body females.
Fast freaks me out still, I can stop at slow speeds but the lean needs work the faster I go. Ahh got to love ice skating and bruised muscles after falls 😂
Haha I have had plenty of bruised from my fails over the years. Building up stopping skills slowly but surely are important when wanting to go fast. It isn't ideal to skate faster than you are comfortable stopping at.
Yes, I would love to see the video in how to go fast for figure skating... and what others have suggested in the comments. But that one first! :D After your blades are sharpened of course! 😅 Safety first!
Excellent video, as always! It would be really nice to see the other video you mentioned, and I also have my own idea to suggest. Maybe a video about how to jump higher and strengthen your take-offs? I'm sure it's not just me who struggles with that :)
Tysm, i cant skate fast and i didnt know how to speed up, but this video helped me alot, and i wanted to be a hockey player, but i think my skills are so low, tysm
Perfect lesson for going fast...put a hockey skates and u will be very fast...the theory is perfect!... u have explained very good....loading over the pushing leg...yes right..load weight on the pushing leg ...the recovery leg must be like u show us.returning in a circular motion..thanks ...
Very funny video and it works for me....I like Coach Lloyd. Useful info and I like that Coach Lloyd can think and teach outside the figure skating box, because I am a freestyle skater and i don't like to skate within figure skating's strict beauty.

yes please how to go fast as a figure skater! im also not sure how to turn when im going fast and dont want to do a 3turn, im not sure how my edges are supposed to feel when going fast, and i dont know how to stop when skating clockwise
Is okay Sir , if you can do a video on what drills does a figure ice skater need to do in order to improve their endurance and go faster on ice . Hope you notice my question
im a kid who loves ice skating, about 11 years old my first experience was scary you guys know it would be scary with my titas, i had 3 titas on moa with my mom and my cousin, my tita held me then when i needed to go to pee my mom saw my skaters was big and not fit, so she told it to the person that gives the skaters said "oh im sorry i'll be right back" then i could balance well now i didnt know how to go fast or run since im going to galas tomorrow, so im using tips to improve my skating skills thx you!
Someone who skated like the example of “you probably shouldn’t go fast” tried to chase me on ice and ended up smashing their jaw into the ice, so please don’t try this unless you’re at the right level!
today i tried going fast on ice the first couple of tries was going well. but this one time when i was going too fast a crack on the ice made me fall face first on the ice my teeth felt pushed back thankfuly my teeth were still fine :) by fast i mean just running like on the ground running no technique
Hahaha, nice tips! Sometime I like to skate fast this way with my figure skates for fun, seldom see other figure skaters around doing this, and I can feel they looking at me like "hello u are figure skater but skate like ice hockey or speed skater". Beside I will roll my eyes when see people anyhow skate like octopus and trying to skate fast but can't do stop properly 🙈
Haha I like your octopus reference. It can be a lot of to skate around fast like this. Skating like this can also be used for cardio training for the long program.
@@IceCoachOnline oh, didn't know it can be cardio training too. Now I have motivation to add it in as part of my practice. Thank you, Coach Lloyd! Looking forwards more of your video!
This ooks fun and I watched the Olympians and wanted to try this sometime someday soon but I'm 22 and never been on the ice am I too old to be a figure skater🤔
I love that protracted stop at 4:00, what would you call that? It's something like a one foot hockey stop and the left foot is pushed out front and also gliding sideways but only lightly touching the ice.
I have a question! Whenever I’m skating fast, it feels like my feet wobble A LOT (it’s like they are being moved by every bump and dent on the ice). Im guessing that my weight isn’t distributed correctly? I’m so confused what I’m doing wrong because I feel like I’m going to lose control if I continue to let my feet wobble like that. And they only wobble when I try to skate fast.
There could be a number of things going on here. Are your skates properly fitted? Are they correctly laced up? Perhaps when you try to go as fast as possible you forget to keep your ankles working correctly (pointing as you push, flexing as you bring your feet together). The end result would be you keep your ankles loose and then your feet feel wobbly
@@Crazypreeteens try tying your skates tighter (English is not my first language idk if I said that correctly lmao), if they wobble it could be because they aren't tight enough in the area of your ankles, make sure the tongue of the skate is touching your ankle, and if you can't make it tighter because you don't have enough strength in your arms to pull the laces more (like me LMFAO), try taking your foot off the ground and using it to make it tight, like pushing down as you push up your laces. Don't tight it up so much that your legs turn blue tho-- (idk if this helps sorry)
This is very interesting to see from a figure skaters perspective, because i'm a speed skater

Yes I agree. In figure skating, the best skaters pick up speed without showing they are working hard to gain the speed with endless crossovers. 😁
It’s maybe not interesting for figure skaters, but as a hockey player this is essential.
