If you can skate you are half way there, never too late to start. Hey even Bill Burr plays “pick up” hockey. A few of the guys at various sessions I’ve played at and currently play at have people in their 60’s playing who might not have speed on their skates, but they have poise and great stick handling and vision for passes that break out of defence or into the offensive zones.
If you can afford it, give it a try.
I think you will easily transition to hockey if you have the hockey mentality and buy the kit.

Not trying to sounds condescending but this doesn't work on becoming a faster skater. This just works on quick feet. Maybe your acceleration from the side...
#1 thing to improve on to be faster at skating is your form in stride. Most people don't get enough contact surface with their stride (small steps) but everyone is different...

sadly hockey coaches do not have the proper skating background...hes seems like a great coach but what he teaches is wrong. you get grip from the edges of the full blade not the toes, the more blade on the ice the more weight and power you can transfer on the ice. thats why speedskater have long blades (more glide and more pressure on the ice). although hes right about skating on the same plane (sideways) kids need not to jump up while doing cross over they lose the pressure (power) they just put on the ice, you need indeed to move the knees quick but bent towards the direction you're going not up (like jumping farther to the side, not up).
been coaching both hockey and short track speed skating for years now, all the players who come dab into speed skating end up being the fastest of their league because they're taught how to properly do weight transfer and effective crossovers
skating nowadays make a whole difference in the NHL, top players are also great skaters think of mcdavid, makar, mackinnon, kaprizov etc.
