May 22nd ... Saturday afternoon; reported by local newspaper:
***BREAKING NEWS: Authorities work trail rescue after rattlesnake bite
First responders are in the process of performing an Appalachian Trail rescue for a 31-year-old male with a rattlesnake bite to the leg. The bite occurred approximately three hours ago, and the victim is reportedly conscious presently.
The rescue is taking place off Georgia 75 South at Mill Creek in Hiawassee, with the Georgia State Patrol working to airlift the bite victim from the trail.
This information came in as a community tip, with corroboration by local authorities.
ETA:
***UPDATE: The snakebite victim is en route to a nearby trauma center via the Blairsville-based Air Life Georgia 14 medical helicopter, according to authorities.
You guys always rock the treks! Glad you guys were in the clear away from the rattlesnakes and hope the guy is ok... so horrific. Refuel and recover with them cheetos and ramen LOL and see ya on the next one!
The song "John Denver- Rocky Mountain"
😊👍👍👍
Wow that was a big scary day. Hope that dude is OK. Got a thank God for people with rescue skills.
Wow what a hike, keep your eyes open and your ears listening. Great day, great action filled video with great views. Thanks for videoing.
Big shout out to the rescue team. Get coverage keep safe.
That was bonkers. Thanks for sharing...I always enjoy your videos!
Recognized the lyrics right away...John Denver's Rocky Mountain High. 🏔👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Love that song. Wish John was still around. 😢
Wish Harry Chapin was still around too.
Great to see you guys back. I followed last one. Epic. I just subscribed. Way to go guys.
John Denver "Rocky Mountain High". One of my favorites. Denver was an incredible songwriter.
Yes ! Amazing songwriter 👍👍👍
I stop and get water there every time too nice and cold such a beautiful morning.
Be safe look down always
Take it easy on Julie. Im sure she feels bad enough. Shes wise to trust her gut!
Thank you for the update, very kind to let us know,👍
Those timber rattlers down south are big enough to be 2" between fangs. I have a picture of one of those on the calf from a hospital down there. Bushwacking down there is bad business.
Yea it’s crazy people do that
Those snakes are the real deal , very scary
Awesome work by the rescue workers.
About two months ago a guy who was camping in northern Georgia (don't think he was on the AT) got bit on the lip by a young Copperhead snake. It was while he was sleeping in his tent that the snake bit him. It was posted on FB with pics of his face. It took a while for them to get him to the hospital and by the time he got there he was having trouble breathing. They put him on a respirator and pumped him full of anti venom. As the day progressed he got worse. Ended up having a heart attack and his liver was shutting down. They had him on meds for his heart and had him on dialysis. Ended up making it through the night but just barely (was in a coma at one point). His wife was giving hourly updates but at some point on day 2 she stopped. Not sure why but she did say that he was getting better with every hour but was going to be in the hospital at least a week and was going to need physical therapy to recover. Never said his age but I'm guessing mid 20's. Young snakes give a full dose of venom because they haven't learned to control the amount yet. That was a rough one and hard to follow.
Recently, in the UK they tested Ironman-style rocket-powered jetsuit to rescue people stranded in the wilderness. I think it will be especially good for victims of heart attack and snake bite. These two things are always in the back of my mind when I hike.
Wow very eventful..keep on keepin on..
👍
Glad to have rescue crews when things like that happen.
😊👍
It's so 😎 cool to see you two back on the AT.👍 Have a great hike🥾 Ken
I thought I recognized the words to the song, but the tune kinda threw me off...heh heh. ;-)
😃
Snake bites are real know what’s out there and what to do if you get hit, I had one hit my trekking pole this summer and never even saw him till after the fact. Hope that persons gonna be ok. Hats off to the first responders God bless em
I almost stepped on a 4 foot timber rattler one April afternoon about 5 years ago slogging up Kelly Knob from Addis Gap. He was crossing the trail heading up and to the right and rattled just as I was about to step on him.
Sing it Baskets, sing it. Great video. You guys be good.
Holy moly what a day!
Cool video hope the guy snakebittn is ok. We like the extra footage of when your in town or in camp. its reality like that last seen of the Epsom salts being poured into the tub. We all looked forward to the next one.
The song was Rocky Mountain High, by John Denver.
👍👍👍👍
I really enjoy John Denver's music 🎵 !!!!
Snake bites r painful !!
The power of the strike can be like getting hit with a bat. Then of course the venom starts to go to work.☹️
I really appreciate the time to stop 🛑 and get pics of the flowers and other things ❤️ !!!
Thanks amigo !!!
Crazy day huh ???
Glad to c u taking care of yourself !!
Nut'n like a soak in the tub to ease the body and also sleep like a baby 😊👍🏽
Ok amigo n VERY CAREFUL OUT THERE.
This is the time creepy crawly and wiggly things r out & about !!!!
( As I saw ). So peace & keep on rocking the free world ☺️👍🏽👍🏽
Wow....that was a scary incident. Somehow it feels better knowing that the snake was off trail. I want to look up first aid for snake bites now, because on the trails out west here, any help can be a long....long....way away. Thanks for the great videos. !
I also need to check out your great video for this trip to see what kind of compression socks you are wearing, Baskets. I need the full calf length ones.
Safe hiking there. 🙏🏼👍🏕
So happy to hear that the young man was airlifted out successfully and hope he has a rapid recovery. I remember that area and I thought Kelly Knob was worse than Tray Mtn. Hope you guys are dong well and Happy Memorial Day. By the way Julie is doing a great job on her videos. God Bless
👍
wow , scary event,, hope the guy is okay! nice 19 mile day!
Hawk and Quicksand both have showed rattlesnakes on the trail so keep a watch out! Stay safe !
Crazy , Yea I have shown a huge timber rattlesnake right next to the trail , it’s very scary how many are out there
I just love watching you two hike. I watched your CDT hike Baskets. One of the first long hikes I ever followed. Then I happened upon a video Julie made about “should you vlog your hike?”. I blame her for my RUclips habit now😉. Later on I found out you two were a couple. I Just ❤️ You guys! What a surprise when you two just casually jumped back on the AT this year. I’ll be watching. Be safe, watch out for those snakes.
Hope you guys are OK; there's been no new videos for five days so I'm really hoping everything's cool and neither of you got bitten by a rattlesnake like that other hiker.
Do you meet other RUclipsrs on the trail? I saw those same ATVs and a mention of the rattlesnake bite in someone else's video, so you two must have been hiking in close proximity
Post a link
I passed some hikers but not sure if they did RUclips , a lot of people on trail this day that’s for sure
Be careful
Very interestingcontent
👍
Do you guys have hiker insurance? The cost of a rescue must be enormous. Three cheers for the first responders!
Please be careful and keep on singing Baskets!
Depends on the state & the area. In CA no charge by many county departments for rescue. Other states and areas, I am sure can be different
I remember hiking in Girlscouts and we always carried a snake bite kit. In Wisconsin there are rattlers.
Snake bite kits are worse than useless and cause more harm than good.
@@jhonyermo I hear that now. To think that was always on the checklist for every backpacking trip as a kid. Every ounce counts. I remember my Dad with a cast iron skillet tethered to his pack.
Hey Baskets, and Hi Julie, good stuff, wish I could be on the trail to see you guys, like 148 view 1414, will be watchin for your next one.
I hear snake bites are very painful (often with a horrible swelling) and take weeks to recover.
Wow ! Very scary
@@baskets8429 Be careful, you two.
Truly hope that guy is ok. I was going to say going off trail is just dangerous but then I thought well crap you gotta go off trail to do your business so it could happen to anyone!
It can happen to
Anyone, trail is overgrown, I felt bad for the guy , luckily the helicopter got him out !
@@baskets8429 It can happen to anyone, but always good to be extra cautious when bushwhacking.
Hiker must of stepped on it why I don't hike and pa has alot and copperheads too
Last month same place but was a copperhead guy got bit he been in icu snake bit him on lip waa on Facebook on at trail
He deserves to be bit if he is trying to kiss a poisonous snake.
@@clasvirhodes4969 he went trying to kiss ashame he was sleeping but him in his sleep
You 2 are brave I would turn around get off trail hate snakes
I hate snakes too
@@baskets8429 I like Gartner snakes only harmless
@@baskets8429 but the ones that can kill you that are venmous nope a don't like spiders either
Baskets where did you get that map?
Awols guide book 2021
Oh no you two be extra careful trail maintenance has been not so good in some areas due to covid. And that heat can hurt you quickly as well. Stay safe.
What is that paper trail map that you were showing us?
It’s A.W.O.L.’s AT guide. You can find it online for purchase as PDF or printed book.
How did the bite occur.?
Peak bagging
Dude was off trail
Snake got him on the leg as he was bushwhacking
No consuming spam on this hike?
Yes consuming spam on every hike
Just not every resupply
@@baskets8429 “the golden ticket.”
I hope he will be ok, but rattlesnake bites are pretty nasty, he's in for a lot of pain and a long recovery. Good reason not to bushwhack though. Snakes don't bite for no reason, they do it to protect themselves. Stay on the trail unless there is no other alternative, and if you do have to take extra care to look at your surroundings. Used to have to trap gypsy moths and we had to bushwhack into swamps and through all kinds of brush. You have to be constantly on the lookout.
25 percent DRY
Most bites occur between the months of April and October when snakes and humans are most active outdoors. About 25 percent of the bites are “dry,” meaning no venom was injected, but the bites still require medical treatment.
www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5393596.pdf
@@jhonyermo Yup, they mostly save the venom for prey, and humans aren't prey.
How much water do you carry on ya?
Varies depending on distance to the next water source, when it’s hot out I like to have 1.5 L for 6 miles
@@baskets8429 A lot of water and sweat talk, I was curious :)
That rattlesnake rescue was so scary
Yeah always sobering to see that kind of thing. I saw only one rescue during my thru hike thankfully which was a dehydrated unfit lady who had her two boys with her...:-(((
I remember listening to the audiobook "where is the next shelter" on trail and the author had to climb over a corpse in the Whites (an ultra runner who had an unexpected heart failure). These things just happen but imagine how many people die in traffic on their way to a job they hate or sitting at their desk or slipping in the shower. While never giving their dream a go. I used to worry about these things...
Living a fulfilling good life true to God seems to be the only antidote to anxiety.
I bet I hate rattlesnakes
Man, gotta feel bad for that guy, that will ruin your hike real fast. Hope he is doing okay. Y'all be careful out there, with the heat, the snakes are out in numbers. Nice video, keep 'em coming!
😊👍
