At last, a decent video from someone who hasn't got tens of thousands of subs, or a million views in a month, and doesn't pretend he's a comedian whilst reviewing his gear. And no annoying rapid cuts, and no shilling for big companies. Thank you. Liked and Subbed.
Really appreciate that!
👍💐
I love this guy! Doesn't give a shit about the weight, he just carries what works for him and hikes on...
"If you can't carry it in your pack or in your soul, you don't need it." Now THAT resonates. Congratulations on your thru-hiking the AT and thank you sharing your knowledge.
Amazing line isn’t it?? So glad I heard it. Appreciate you watching :-)
Great video. I hit the AT in 2024, and I also have the Nemo Hornet 2P. It’s great to see someone who provides practical advice, rather than pushing a Z-Pack tent system as a must, or $400 rain gear. Much thanks, at the tender age of 62 I’ll need all the luck I can get😂😁
Thanks for watching! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out. Excited for your journey!
Good luck out there! I'm planning to go myself, we'll see if everything comes together.
I will say, after a thru hike attempt of the AT last year, that your gear represents what you most see on trail. We need more of these. On RUclips I see a lot of frameless packs. On the trail I saw a lot of Osprey packs and Amazon tents! And I love that. And what I loved is that it's a reminder that it can be done with a range of gear. You don't need the best and lightest to go out there. And as you know, you learn as you go! Thanks for sharing. I'll be returning this summer for a SOBO thru attempt and I can't wait
Appreciate this comment! I think you're right, definitely a disconnect between what the influencers are saying and what most people are doing on trail. Reality is, no gear can do the trail for us, we gotta just take those steps. SOBO 23!! Have an amazing journey 🙂
Good discussion of what is available today for the trail hiker. In '72 a good friend and I did the AT with Frostline packs that we had sewn ourselves, external aluminum frames. We did splurge on good 15 degree bags from REI but otherwise most of our gear was from our Boy Scout days or the Amy surplus store. I had Vasque boots and IIRC Denny wore Bass(?). Clothing was mostly wool with cotton cargo shorts. No tents, hammocks and nylon tarps for cover as needed. The next summer we did what is now the Great Divide Trail in Alberta and British Columbia with the same gear. In 75 we did the AT again but southbound. Again same gear but I got a little extravagant carrying a very small cast iron skillet for our special 'after town' meals of eggs and fresh meat. It was luxurious!
Hell yeah!! You all were the real deal. Don’t make them like you all too much anymore. Thanks for sharing your story, love it.
@@PackAndSoul Yeah, we were pretty full of ourselves but we had one heck of a great time on each trip. Now fifty years later we still share the memories and our wives who did not know us then just shrug. Safe travels my friend.
@@denali9449 Wonder what I’ll be telling kids 50 years from now ;-)
Many more adventures to you as well!
I just bought the Osprey Atmos 65 a few weeks ago and have started to worry that I should have gotten a lighter pack for thru hiking. This video is definitely reassuring, glad to know you've been happy with yours!
Oh yeah, in my experience the atmos was incredible. And held up way better than a lot of the lighter packs out there that straight up broke halfway through. Of course, it’s all personal preference. But still using it and working perfectly.
I switched to an UL pack and lowered my BW by a lot recently, but I really enjoyed mine when using it and if I ever have heavier loads I imagine it's one of the first packs I'd look at, as well as possibly the HMG packs
@@michael83479 Never tried the HMG packs... good stuff?
I am preparing for a thru hike of the AP and wondering if you recommend the Small/Medium or Large/extra-large atmos 65.
I loved your video by the way. Super helpful.
@@marcosguerra4677 Thanks for watching! I'm 5'7, 155lbs and the sm/med fits perfectly. So depending on how tall you are / much you weigh, it'll be different for you.
Super useful, thanks for sharing Mr.Greene. Best gear list out there!
rewatched your video about 2-3 times, preparing for my trip. Thank you man!!! Great information. Great delivery!!
Thanks so much, really appreciate that! Hope it helped 🙂Feel free to reach out anytime
@20:00, Your Water System/Filtration Presentation deserves an Oscar. You made something that seems quite mysterious (even risky) to a beginner - into something that is really easy to understand. Gracias!!
Super glad it helped!! I still use and love the system
Love the energy with everything. good recommendations.
Thank you for watching!!
Wonderful video. Now I’ll have to watch your docu
Good recap of your gear! Looking forward to seeing your thru-hike journey. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching! We'll be releasing the full doc soon :-)
I used the sawyer smart bottle system last year, mixed with a camel pack for my motorcycle jacket. It wasn’t enough for me and my dog. Now I’m using a kaydin befree filer that fits perfectly with a hydropak 4L collapsible jug, a 3L msr bladder attached to my pannier, and same camelpak for my jacket still. Plan on doing a lot of travel this year!
Perfect recap!
Love your attitude and honesty in this gear video. Ziplock bags all the way congrats on your completion of the AT 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching :-) ZIPLOCKS for LIFE!
Wow! Absolutely great video! Thank you for sharing!🥾🥾⛺️
Thanks so much for watching and this kind comment! :-)
❤ Beautiful story, thank you!! I especially like your take on feeling safe. And getting out there and starting on your own personal challenge.
Appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave a comment! See you down trail :-)
Hey Hollywood! Thanks for the video and the amazing quotes from mighty bones and no rush. I keep a list of quotes I love and those are definitely going on the list. Solid gear load out. I always enjoy it when I meet a hiker that loves their gear. Does it mirror my gear list? Not even close! But at its core it is identical! Just as your gear made you happy and safe my gear does the same for me. As you so perfectly said: gear is personal. To me, it’s as personal of a thing as what you name your first born or who you decide to choose or not choose as your life partner. I say If gear makes someone happy and keeps them safe, You should keep your pie hole shut and be happy knowing that the hiker is out there living their best life! Don’t be a Mary Ellen! So many great points in this video. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures. 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

Thanks for watching, and for such a thoughtful comment, truly appreciated. Personal, Different, AND Identical somehow, love that. Hopefully see ya down trail! :-)
this is absolutely perfect, thank you. every video you have is outstanding, I can watch them all day long. tons of great information and a good personality on top of it, would love to go out on a hike one day with you, fantastic work. looking forward to more
Thanks so much for the kind words! Really appreciate it
Great video man 🙂 Thanks for sharing your gear and tips - appreciate the insights.
appreciate that! Thanks for watching
Loved your down to earth personality and breakdown!
Appreciate that, thank you!
Love darn toughs. It’s the only socks I use. I have a pair that has been through countless military operations. It’s finally starting to wear down, but still doesn’t have a hole. Another thing is there anti microbial properties are insane. I did a 6 day field event and wore the same socks in 90-100 degree weather the entire time. No problems with athletes foot or trench foot.
They’re the best! Thanks for this comment, love that
Super clear explanations thanka
Thanks for your take on gear, Hollywood. Watched your documentary yesterday. Fantastic job! Congrats on the engagement, too.
Thanks so much for watching!! Truly appreciate it 🙂
Thank you! I waited a long time to hear all of that valuable information.❤
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped :-)
I love my Nemo synthetic bag, and can’t wait to try my quasar pad!! Unfortunately I couldn’t track down a Nemo hornet for a reasonable price so the tent I’m using this year is black tail hotel bikepacking tent! I can not wait to get out there this spring!
Yes this was very helpful love the two sayings if you can't pack it in your back or your soul you don't need it and also die with memories not dreams love that I start at the end of January damn cold totally fearful but I think I've got it I hope your video was helpful looking forward to the documentary
Hey thanks. I am just going to do a section hike, but I like your explanations. Congrats on doing the whole thing.
That’s awesome! Enjoy every step :-)
Taking this almost identical load out this year because of you. Thank you for sharing! 🤙🏼🤙🏼
Whoa that's awesome!! Good luck! Enjoy every step. Drop a line every now and then
Thank you. I plan to hike the AT in 2023.
Awesome! Keep in touch and let me know how it goes!! Reach out if you need anything
That little smart water bottle nugget was clutch. Thanks for showing us your system. Great video.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching :-)
Our kind of packer. Light but practical. Weight doesn’t mean anything if an item doesn’t work. You got a subscribe.
Thanks so much for the kind words, and subscribing!
Books in the shelf, LPs in the back, enjoys backpacking and have a sensible approach to gear choice. All great signs of a good mind in my eyes..
ha appreciate that!
Great video man.
Congratulations. On both the trail and posting this great vid!
Thanks! Appreciate that!!
Outstanding! And congrats on the hike
Thank you! Appreciate that :-)

Great video. Happy to see the smiles.
Thanks for watching!
GEEAAARRR!!! Really good tips even for casual hikers.
Gotta love the GEAR!!
Closing in on 1K likes, you deserve it. Congrats on all you’ve accomplished!
Thanks so much!!
Your video is so helpful! I have very loose plans to start my AT hike NOBO in late February:) I’ll have to rewatch this when im getting my gear together
Thanks so much for this comment! Appreciate you
I ran across your video yesterday. Good to hear your experience about Nemo gear. Just bought a setup, tent, bag, pad... same products. Same goal. Thanks!
Outstanding! Love the Nemo gear, held up exceptionally well, and they’ve replaced anything that hasn’t. When you setting out??
Felt the need to comment because you just had so much positive energy. Loved the video man!
This is awesome! Thanks so much for watching and leaving this note :-)
congrats on 100k views! love u man
Thanks my man!
Fantastic video.. thanks for posting.
Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for the video:) I especially liked seeing your water filtration system
Appreciate you watching! Love that system, it’s the best. What’s your method?
@@PackAndSoul I had a mini Sawyer with Sawyer one gallon clean and dirty bags that were more duct tape than bag in the end...lol! I just got a Katydyn screw on filter directly on a collapsable Hydrapak 3 liter bag. Its so much lighter and more compact than my old set up. I also love my hydration pack...so convenient.
@@projecttreecollard haha, god bless duct tape! Heard good things about the Katadyn. Can't figure out why more people don't use the hydration pack, it's great!
Thanks for sharing, Hollywood. Can't wait to watch your documentary in its entirety! -Harpo
Forgot to mention that I actually wore a pair of La Sportiva WIldcats for a few hundred miles. Picked them up at from the hiker box at Stanimals-Wanesboro and wore them until I got to NJ. They worked great, but I also love the La Sportiva Spire GTX's that I wore for my first 900 miles and the second pair I wore for the last 900 miles.
@@Harpo-so7ft la sportiva all the way! Hope to see ya again soon Harpo!!
Great gear review! Mishap loves those Wildcats too, I wish they fit my feet better bc they are BEAST, sturdy built with sticky treads.
Thank you for sharing
Wildcats for life! haha. Thank you so much for watching :-)
I liked this video so much that I took notes on it. Now at 68 yrs. old I continue to go lighter and lighter! Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much for watching!! Truly appreciate it. Curious to hear what kind of gear you enjoy using
Telling it like it is, bravo!
You know it!
I am so happy for you!
Thanks so much!!
I really enjoyed your gear video. I'm heading out at the end of March 2022 for my AT Thru and I love watching post trail gear videos like yours. It's super cool to see what worked for you. Thanks for sharing and congratulations on your successful Thru!
Thanks so much for watching, and congrats! You already did the hardest part, deciding to go ;-)
Please reach out if you have any questions, but I'm sure you already know, the trail will provide! Enjoy every step
@@PackAndSoul I may take you up on that, Nick. The closer my start date approaches, the more the excite nerves kick in with questions. I just started my YT channel so that I can practice that whole process of making YT videos before hitting the trail. I’m starting with short gear videos. If you happen to watch any of them, please don’t hesitate to comment and give me your opinion. The advice of other Thru Hikers is golden to me. Thanks again Nick.
@@WALKITOFFDavidSmith Heck yeah man! Watched your vids, super cool. Love the shirt over the pillow trick, implementing that asap! Great backyard btw. I didn't make any RUclips style vids out there, only the documentary, so not too versed in them. But yours seem fantastic, really authentic. I'll say that having some sort of artistic expression was HUGE. Helped me slow down. Otherwise you can fall into that "get to Maine brain." Take your time, enjoy it all. Excited for you bother, stoked to see how it all unfolds!
@@PackAndSoul oh wow. Thanks for the kind words. I’m actually a photographer and my photography business is what is funding my trip. I’m wanting to take a break from my paid work and create the videos and photos that feed my creative side. I know the trail will provide that for me and I think the videos will help keep my mind occupied and fight any boredom. I get bored quickly. With that being said, I’m only bringing the least amount of gear as possible to do this which will challenge me to try to “create”. iPhone 13 pro and GoPro with an external mic is all that’s coming. Sony gear is staying at home. Lol. I want to def check out your documentary. Where would I find it? Thanks 🙏
@@WALKITOFFDavidSmith That's perfect, you're gonna thrive out there! You''ll appreciate the stealth setup once you hit the whites. I had 6.5 pounds of camera gear, and I felt every ounce lol. We're releasing the series on Vimeo On Demand tonight! I'll share the link on here when we do :-)
i do love my nemo gear!! the cool part is that i always extensively research whatever new/upgrade piece of gear i would like and many many times i end up with a nemo product; my winter sleep system is all nemo and i couldn't be happier. great video, you've got a great attitude!
Thanks so much for watching! And hell yeah, Nemo all the way
Nemo has been awesome about replacing gear that has worn out despite how long I've had it. Love that from a brand - they really care about their consumers!
Absolutely agree with Nathan Baum here, terrific stuff and really appreciated. Very much looking forward to your documentary. Jack NYC
Thanks, Jack!
Great video, would love to see more by you!
Thanks so much! Have a couple more vids on my page, and more to come soon!
Looks like a pretty decent traditional backpacking kit. 👍
I usually just use the tube and connector that came with my sawyer filter if I wanna do a gravity filter.
Informative and good video. 🤙
Thanks for watching!
Very informative ... thank you !
Thanks for watching!
Damn awesome video!
Great video and thanks for sharing. Would be interested to learn more about your cold soaking process (how long does it take, what kind of foods, etc).
Congrats on completing your thru hike!
Thanks so much for watching! I found cold soaking to be a great way to "cook." I'd usually put some freeze dried food (backpackers pantry, mountain house, ramen, etc) in a talenti jar around lunch time, noon or so. Fill it to the brim with water. Then by 7pm for dinner, it was perfect. For the cheap ramen meals, an hour or two usually did the trick.
@@walldntv mmmmm not a bad idea!
I'm hiking the A.T. next week. Thank you for the information. I'm glad that what I mostly have is what you described. Let you know how it goes. Congrats on completing the A.T. and congrats on the happy marriage at the end.
Amazing! Congrats! Yes please keep in touch. Enjoy every step
I appreciate your talking about ziploc bags being reusable! We reuse them a lot in our house; though, I draw the line at letting my fiance wash and reuse bags he uses to marinate raw chicken.
Yeah raw chicken might be where I draw the line too haha. Thanks so much for watching!
In the process of getting my gear right now. Just got the same 65 liter Atmos AG, a little concerned because of the base pack weight, but I love all the features it comes with, I think I can make it work!
I hear ya, but I really found it carried the weight so well! My experience with ultralight packs have mostly been that they’re uncomfortable because the weight just doesn’t sit right. But of course everyone is a bit different. What else did you have in mind?
If you want to get it but lighter the Atmos AG LT 50 weighs less and has same suspension and everything. You could also look at the exos pro 55 but I haven't seen/tried it on in person
Really enjoyable video ,and great RUclips channel
Thanks so much for watching :-)
Excellent video! I gained a lot from your explanation and experience. Well done. Thanks for sharing this. Learned a lot. New follower here. Crow✌️
Appreciate you watching!
As a Vermonter who has spent plenty of time in the Adirondacks I agree with you, the black flies are attracted to bug spray. Long sleeves and pants and a head net keep me sane.
Man those things are nasty! Gotta be a tough Vermonter to be able to hang with those things lol
Darn Toughs are the only socks I use now... for everything. Great video with a lot of useful information.
Thanks so much for watching! Darn toughs are amazing. You ever return them for a new pair after you’ve worked a hole into them??
@@PackAndSoul I've not had to return any yet. I do have a pair that is getting then that I may return soon.
Sharp bud, liked it
Thanks!
Great video! I really appreciate it! This has helped my gear prep greatly.
One question, how did you come to the conclusion on clothing? How’d you know comfort would last? What made you choose what you wore and what you packed?
Thanks for watching! For clothing, I honestly just bought the cheapest things (or brought what I already had) and it ended up working out. Kind of a happy accident
Great video
Thanks for watching!
Fantastic Video !!
I will go back and take notes.
Thank you very much for the details.
In total, how much did your pack weigh??
Thank you, John
Appreciate you watching! My pack all in with full food resupply / water was around 35lbs. Definitely on the heavier side, but it’s also because I brought my camera gear with me, which added an extra 6lbs or so. I didn’t mind the weight.
Loved your thumbnail for this video. An homage to Colin Fletcher’s cover on one edition of his THE COMPLETE WALKER?
Both are used by Hikers but a Compactor bag are smaller bags made to handle the stress a Trash Compactor puts them through, a Contractor bags are large for large Cans commonly used by Contractors for waste that would shred normal large trash can liners.
Awesome, thanks for the clarification!
That's the pack I'm looking into as well. Any way to possibly extend the zipper maybe? Paracord?
Talking about the hip belt zipper? That’s actually a great idea, stick a little Paracord on there! Cause other than that, the pack is fantastic! Check out my review on that pack too, a bit more in depth
Haha, that Taj record is one of my favorite records.
So good!!
Maybe get hot pink surveyor tape, great marking a trail in emergency, etc. Some smoke flares also.

Great video, thanks for sharing. What strap do you have on your cnoc bag?? I just ordered the blue adapter, looks like a great idea!! Thanks
Thanks for checking it out! That’s just a random velcro strap on there, think I got it from one of the Nemo products. Was handy though, used it to hang from trees while gravity was working. It’s a great system!
thanks for sharing! looking to do it 2025
Appreciate you watching! Good luck on your thru!!!!
Only about 5 minutes in to the video, but you had me at Talenti jar. Lol 🤤
Ha amazing!
That was pretty cool. What do you think about doing it with an 80 lb dog that's 2 years old that loves the outdoors.
Thanks for watching! Man, I’d absolutely love to do a thru with my dog one day. I have heard it’s really challenging though. Injuries, sickness, fatigue, even saw one dog who got bit in the face by a rattlesnake. And some people at shelters get pretty worked up if a dog barks at night. It’s daunting for sure, but I imagine the reward of doing something like this with your best bud has to be worth the hassle. I suppose just do a bunch of test hikes with your buddy. A few days, a week, see how it goes. Let me know too, I’d love to hear what you learn!
Totally on board with the one ziplock bag. Go back to the inconvenience of using the flask(if you must). Either you lug around little glass empties or put more pieces of plastics out there...... yeah?
Totally hear ya. Gotta figure out how to fill the flask without having to buy those little plastic bottles anyway. Would have to buy a bigger glass one, then drink the rest that doesn’t fit in the flask, not a bad chore lol. Appreciate the comment
Congratulations 😊
Thanks!
Your amazing.
Were those poles on mt katadin? That's where Dixie lost hers. Trail magic for ya! Safe travels.
Gotta love the magic!! Found the poles at Delaware water gap.
Loved the thumbnail for this video. Was it an homage to the cover of one edition of Colin Fletcher’s THE COMPLETE WALKER?
Haven't read that, but I'm sure we're all copying it lol!
I enjoy backpacking for 4 or 5 days in the Smokies ( about 300 miles).... ending at a robo wash ....That's just me ...)))
I have the same pack... I bought it recently and I actually said the zippers on those hipbelt pockets really need to be attached to one of those car door testing machines for about 6 months to losen them up. My PCT adventures are set for next year, so this is my "buy every piece of gear made by every company" year, lol, I want to recommend that everyone who buys this pack needs to join a yoga commune or contortionist cult, a year in advance so you can use those hipbelt pockets starting out on day one. 😆
Haha it’s insane! If we all band together, Osprey has to hear our call! Thanks for sharing this :-)
Great video , jc how much your pack weigh in all ?

The one thing that really really does need to be reworked on the back is the belt pouches - they are too hard to reach to open and close. I have had one of their packs for a few years and that is the thing that keeps being an issue.
You’re absolutely right. I have no idea what they were thinking lol
The explanation of the cord search seemed to be surrounded by oxygen deprivation lol. You should have one backpack filled with an assortment of cords. 😆
Where can i get that little blue adapter for the soyer squeeze?
So sorry, missed your comment for so long! Did you end up getting the adapter?? Here's the link if you still needed it. alnk.to/aLCJsfp
What was your total full pack weight? What is the range people carry? I am 180 lbs and ideally want to carry under 30 pounds that includes 5-7 days of food.
My pack with full resupply and water was about 35 (and that included 6 lbs of camera gear). Totally doable to get under 30 with a full resupply, you may have to spend a little more money to get the ultralight gear, and cut luxuries (like camera gear lol). Everyone is obviously different, but I’d say the typically range was between 20-30. But hey, thirty years ago hikers’ packs would be 40+ lbs! Lol. Such a give and take between cutting weight and bringing comforts. What’s your pack looking like right now?
I met No Rush in 2017

Haha that’s awesome. he’s perpetually making it to Maine! Appreciate the comment :-)
Nice video Hollywood, question for you, do you need to go to town when you want to recharge your power bank? Or you can do this on trail.
Thanks
Thanks for watching! Yeah I went into town every four days or so and charged everything back up, including the power bank. It held up pretty good on trail though for those four days. But there’s nowhere to charge on trail
@@PackAndSoul Ok, so you slept in a hotel or motel every 4 days or you charged somewhere else?
Are you doing a zero during those days in town?
Do you need to go into town for resupply as well or there is a grocery store or gas station near the trail?
I'm planning to do the AT :)
Thank you
@@micbernier6403 Keep those questions coming! Anything I can do to help :-)
So every 4 days or so I went into town and resupplied food at a grocery store. While I was shopping I’d leave my bag by an outlet and charge my phone and external charger. I’d spend an hour or two charging, shopping, eating, relaxing, then typically hitch back to trail. Charging electronics is funny, every time you see an outlet, you charge. You get good at spotting them / knowing exactly where they are lol.
Sometimes there’s a gas station not far from trail and you can get some resupply stuff done there, but it’s usually not as easy to get good food and more expensive. I didn’t stay overnight at too many hostels or take too many zeros, about 10 or so, I loved being on trail ;-)
also, this video may help clarify how it worked out for me. ruclips.net/video/2bhyJ4FFlYk/видео.html
@@PackAndSoul ok good cause I love to be on trail too. Is it easy to hitchhiking or you have to walk more miles? Thanks :)
