Thank you. I found Range Bars at 700 cals per bar. Greenbelly bars about 650 cals per package. Garden of Life Bars 240 cals each. Noka package smoothies 110 cals each. Wonderful Pistachios and peanut M and Ms. All great tasting and filling. Happy Trails!
So enjoyed this, thank you so much for your tips🙏 Doing a 3 week hike in NZ in a few weeks, have found from previous hikes some fresh fruit or veg really helps keep up my energy even though it’s not the most practical or efficient energy source. Dark chocolate and a plant based protein powder with added vitamins has been really helpful at times too. Definitely relate to chugging healthy food when you hit a town, can’t get those nutrients down quick enough😁 Stay well, cheers from NZ 🙏
New Zealand indeed, and it’s a dream for sure- Middle Earth😉 Thanks so much for all the inspiration, and I’m not documenting this trip but one day would love to :) Keep on keeping on🙏
Always enjoy your videos, and I they are only improved by the cutaway VO, like the scenes from Pack & Soul. Seeing what you are talking about, while we're hearing you talk about it, always makes the viewing experience even better. Thanks for that. Have a great one everyone, Jack NYC
I'm not thru hiking so it's different but i still try to eat KETO as much as I can on trail.... Way harder but I boost myself with fat and protein instead of sugar... It works for now but would be too heavy and expensive on a thru hike and hard to find too. Thanks for the info.
Oh yeah, keto has to be way more sustainable health wise long term. Probably more expensive too like you said, but if you can swing the cost, you’re most likely better off. Do you feel you get enough calories with Keto? These little honey bun things filled with pure sugar have like 900 calories. All empty, all processed. But there they are. Started off the trail eating so healthy, and was just way too hungry all the time!
@@PackAndSoul well, fat gives a lot of calories very fast...PB, mct oil, olive oil, nuts etc so adding these to your mix helps a lot. I do get enough when i'm adding...if I don't, nope! but It could work if you know what you are doing and able to find the ingredients. I go high fat and protein.. :)
@@PackAndSoul another tip for favor is infusing your olive oil before you take it on the trail, just toss in some garlic, Basel, rosemary ect when the oil is at a simmer and let it go for 5 min or so then cool and strain, it makes food just that much better for 10 min or ur time
Thank you for your videos! As a 2023 thru hike prospect I'm soaking up as much info as I can and you are consistently good. How often were you resupplying? I also dont really have 20lbs to lose so Im trying to figure out how much I should realistically carry.
Thanks for this comment! Pumped for your thru! Probably averaged out to a resupply about every 3 or 4 days or so. By the end of the trail, I could barely fit the food in my bag I was eating so much lol. But there seems to be food all over trail. Weather trail angels, day hikers, random gas stations on a road, etc. wasn't ever really in a situation where I ran out of food... except when a bear took my food bag! (I hung it wrong). What date are you heading out?
@@PackAndSoul My roommate and I are planning on leaving the first or second week of April, depending on how quickly can pack our place lol. At this point I'm just making the gear purchases I need and mentally prepping. Its feeling more and more real the closer we get. Were both still working/ grad school but I'm looking forward to that pivot in the last few weeks before we leave. Not looking forward to the cold up front but hopefully leaving later will help. Thank you for all your helpful videos man!
@@seanrich7969 so freakin exciting! Gonna be an irreplaceable experience I started in May and it was still cold at Springer! I don’t know how people start in Feb, nuts. If you need any gear recs at all, got a ton of those! And any other questions, feel free to reach out.
The olive oil idea is fantastic - I have never thought of that. I will add that one into the plan for long, multi-day outings - great, great idea. Now, chugging OO?- that MUST be your Italian bio-heritage peeking through 😂😂 Really good stuff on your channel. Thanks again
Olive oil is king! Can’t live without it. The vessel in which you carry it is really important, something secure so it doesn’t spill. Really appreciate you supporting the channel!
Recipe you will like. Whipped Honey, Trail mix, Jerky, Peanut Butter all whipped together and have a pack of Tortillas on the side. Why does nobody bring 10lbs of Raw Rice? I believe all these thru hikers don't eat or live healthy and wouldn't last long in a survival situation.
The amount of sodium in Backpackers Pantry’s food is unreal! I’d skip it entirely, it doesn’t matter if it’s family owned, they make the most ultra processed, industrial stuff ever! 😂
I hear ya. But in terms of what’s typically in thru-hiking food, sodium’s the least of my worries. Super hard to find a truly healthy meal that won’t break the bank over 5 months and will actually have the calorie count you need. If you’re aware of one, let me know
@@sigmalife0570 id say about 4 liters a day. Wish I could’ve gone slower to tell ya the truth! As much time out there as possible. But I started mid May, so had to get to Katahdin before the weather hit.
Combination of both I suppose, though I tried to keep as much muscle as possible, with push-ups every night. And I gained both the muscle and especially the fat back pretty much immediately! About a month or so I was back to my normal weight
Every hiker's FAVORITE subject! Foooooooooood!
Got that right
You give the most practical advice on RUclips! Keep on trekking!
That means a lot, thank you! See ya down trail!
Oatmeal and eye believe this to bee thee best and most helpful motion pitcher regarding this top so far...and we have watched a few.
Appreciate you watching!
THIS is what I was waiting for. Disgusting habits, but as you say, “only on trail”. I like wrapping snickers bars in tortillas. Yum. 🎉
Disgusting and delicious ;-)
These habits don't go away and when you go home your body is in crash/recovery mode while you live unhealthy with a bad diet.
love that mac n cheese section. that was my favorite part from the pack & soul documentary. its also my favorite food to eat on trail.
Mac n cheese is the best. Creamy goodness

Back in the day we used an empty Country Time Lemonade (the big mix ones) container because you could use the lid as a bowl!
Ingenuity!

Take a tortilla and spread Nutella and PB. Wrap a Snickers bar inside like a burrito. Then toast over a fire with a forked stick. Trail gourmet
YES! That’s outstanding
I like summer sausages. And string cheese, that’s the underrated one.
String cheese!!! 100%

That’s a great idea with the cold soak 👍🏼👍🏼
Love the cold soak!!
Fritos have very high calorie/ oz, and go well with bean dishes. They're also sturdier than potato chips.
GREAT idea. Love Fritos too, prob my favorite.
Another great video, Hollywood❣️
It’s soooo important to keep your weight and nutrition up❣️😃
Some items to file for a later date❣️👍🏻😎
Thanks, bud❣️🥰
This is why you angels are so important! You provide us with the nutrients we struggle to get out of our packs! Much appreciated!
Excellent. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Nice! You should make an infomercial, “Want to lose weight and eat everything you ever wanted? Go hike the Appalachian trail!”
Great idea, Know a producer?
Trail mix !!!
Healthy foods are essential for me. Maybe on a thru it is different, but I need the fresh fruits and veggies
Definitely miss the fresh fruits and veggies on a long trail. I try to incorporate them whenever I can
Yall should try chicken pesto quesodilla, just tortilla with pesto, chicken packet and cheese cooked with olive oil, its the jam
Hell yeah! Sounds great. Will definitely try it out, thanks

How many calories did you eat per day? And how much do you think you burned each day?
Good question, I’d say probably ate like 5 thousand a day, and burned 6.
Why dont thru hikers carry a bag of Rice and Flour?
Weighs a lot

20 miles a day? I thought 10-12 only?
I usually averaged around 18-22 a day. Sometimes 30s, sometimes 15s. I never really did 10-12 unless I was going into town that day
