    It looks like Lego learned to put more motors in their huge sets instead of just one like the bucket wheel excavator.

      yeh the bucket wheel needed a little more power, maybe a separate motor for the tracks. I did make some modifications to it to allow things to move more freely which helped, but still had its sticking points.

      Me too, but i in general like visible moving parts on things, because i find it to be otherwise boring if its all just one big surface. For example: growing up, i almost always build proppellor aircraft, and not jet/turbine powered aircraft, because you could see how fast the prop was going, and in a turbine engine it much less visible, and in some cases with jet planes not at all

    This is a very cool demonstration of what the new control hubs can actually do! It makes sense to use a smartphone or tablet for something so complex, like this set. The amount of controls and control modes you can use is impressive, and easy to use on a touchscreen. There's no way to use a controller for something this big and complex. And the feedback! Gyros in both hubs, the angle feedback in the motors, even custom endstops that are automatically detected and calibrated! This is a very impressive and advanced model.

    I honestly think it would be ok if Lego kept releasing sets like this that require you to use your phone, but only if they also release a new Mindstorms set that will be compatible with the new motors. Enough time has passed that the older Mindstorms motors and sensors have been completely outclassed by the technology used in boost and technic. I can only imagine how good a new one would be, one that learned from EV3's many mistakes and invested more of the part count into building and programming complex autonomous robots and structures.

    • @controlsixtyfour
      @controlsixtyfour 4 года назад

      I was so hyped for mindstorms.. I got the Ev3 set but I do acknowledge the flaws.. like the connector pins. RJ4? yikes.
      I agree though I hope they make some revised sets that are compatible with the new motors/connectors (and maybe adaptors to the original mindstorms connectors?)

    • @12171010011010
      @12171010011010 4 года назад

      Funnily enough they are actually just about to release another mindstorms set later this year. From the images it looks like all the builds are really simple, but the components like motors and sensors are also a bit more compact and versatile.It could actually be good.

    • @funfetti7194
      @funfetti7194 4 года назад +1

      They probably used acuaters to keep the price down. With pneumatics it would somewhere between 500 to 600 dollars
      I think

    • @JNDlego57
      @JNDlego57 4 года назад +1

      funfetti builds Actually, it’s more about power and control. Actuators will always have more power than LEGO pneumatics, and this set is massive and needs the power. Also, LEGO currently doesn’t have a very easy way to regulate the airflow to a cylinder. It’s similar to PF, either off or on.

    • @stevosteve
      @stevosteve 2 года назад

      Maybe even using HYDRAULICS with oil like the real machine does, man that would be cool.

    • @donovanellis1533
      @donovanellis1533 Год назад

      Linear actuators are used in place of pneumatics where precision and maximum transfer of power are important. Pneumatics are susceptible to leakage and bypass when under heavy load. If this Excavator used pneumatics, the arm would sag fairly fast, especially with any serious weight in the bucket, and would struggle to exert any usable force. Not to mention, with lego's traditional approach to pneumatics, that raises a problem with this set. You would need one motor of sufficient strength and speed to drive the compressor and generate pressure, and one servo+valve for each individual function. For a face shovel excavator like this, with 4 arm functions, this would require 5 independent motors. The Control+hubs can only control up to 4. This would necessitate the addition of another hub of any type, or replacing the one in the superstructure with the 6 port one from the Mindstorms 51515 or spike prime sets, which would further raise this set's already considerable price.

    The lack of B model is getting quite common sadly :( .

    • @vtr0104
      @vtr0104 4 года назад +1

      It's very likely because of the Control+ system itself. Each one seems to be very specifically made for each model, so having a set with two models would mean double the work to set up the App for it.
      And in this case, Liebherr tends to make all manner of construction equipment, so you'd likely end up making two excavators out of the same set or something... That's unless you don't plan on using the bucket in a second set.

  • @yanneman57

    Lego's recent Technic models developed together with Volvo and Leibherr are great. I hope they continue making models with them. That's the chassis, the superstructure is everything above the slewing bearing, and yes, by quite a bit it seems, what probably would help there is long technic beam with the holes aligned along the vertical axis across the chassis.

    Thank you Sariel for this jewel of a review of this upcoming set. Thank you for spending so much of your time, your review is awesomely detailed. Just one thing: I like Lego Technic a lot. I adored building, for exemple, Rough Terrain Crane 42082: 1 motor, 5 functions. (Very) complicated build and very rewarding functionality when finished. I'm afraid this set lacks this Technic complexity with every function having it's own motor. That's a con IMHO.

    regarding your comments about the shovel: This is what is called a front shovel and its use is usually digging upwards: the excavator stands on the base and a "wall" of soil or rock is rising up in front of it, the shovel digs in at the bottom and while going upwards, is loaded with the material.

      Yeah, but you have to remember that back then a 1,000-pieces LEGO set was a rarity. Now it's below medium-sized. If you consider price-per-piece, the sets nowadays are actually cheaper than sets from 20 or 30 years ago, and at the same time they're much more sophisticated.

    Have been waiting a long time for this video, I originally planned to purchase it right before my birthday. I ended up waiting a whole month to purchase it. I can’t wait to buy it next week.

    I really hope they make a mining dump truck like your moc to go along with this because I would buy that. The tilt sensors would be cool on it.

      i would check legos website and look in motor catergories im not familiar with these bluetooth motors i use the 9volts and pf hope this helps

      @@hunter7476 I have done so already. Also in the single parts category, but they are not available. I was thinking about buying the crawler (mostly for the electronics), but I would need one more of the smaller motors (Since I mostly build tanks, which require four motors, most of the time) .
