10 most important Lego Technic pieces of all time?
Yes!
That´ll be great!
1. Brick separator.
@@searme well said
@@searme I'd say the 2780 black pin deserves at least an honourable mention.
Sadly no mention about the space shuttle (8480). That is a mindblowing set, even today.
A child dream 😍
8480 is an amazing set. And afaik it's the set that introduced the studless beams. That should be a reason good enough for it be in the top 10 most important Technic sets.
Totally agreed, maybe the most intricated and ingenious set.
You beat me to it. That one was and is awesome. I’ll buy one if one becomes available reasonably.
Lucky enough to pick this up half price at Legoland Windsor about 20 years ago. Was still a lot of money at the time. Awesome kit. The fibre optics are a bit crispy now though!
The 8110 unimog had portal axle hubs and the big ball joints for the live axles in 2011 before the 9398 crawler in 2012
I would’ve thought the 42009 Mobile Crane MKII would’ve been in there
I'm still waiting for the lego technic hamster set with which we can finally attack those cats
its out yayyyyy you gonna buy it
I expected the 42043 Mercedes Arocs being on this list
Regarding milestones to the Technic theme, I can see why it was left out. It didn't really bring much new to the table, after all - solid axle suspension was already in 8110, 9398, 42005 and 42038, pneumatics were well established in the Technic theme, and a motorised compressor was already seen in 8110.
However, purely from a mechanical complexity point of view, the Arocs was and still is (imo) without question the pinnacle of official Technic sets (8880 doesn't hold a candle to it, fight me stans). I think for that alone it should've gotten a position.
I bought it back then and never opened it, man... Every time I'm going to build it I think if I really should, haha...
@@Ariranhaa It's a great set! The hosing through the turntable is a bit awkward though.
I remember getting the super car for Christmas back in the day. I still have it assembled to
Me too! I was 14 years old. I remember how excited I was and couldn't believe I actually got it!
Wonderful to hear your voice, also great to hear your insight with the importance of different sets. Your perspective is highly valued!
Certainly missing 8480 Space Shuttle on this list!! Such a unique set with its fibre optics parts. Also 8421 Mobile Crane should be here imo.
Who else wants to see more videos with Sariel's voice?
I am actually in shock because of the voice hahaha. I haven't checked his videos in a while. I am usually frustrated there is only text and that super super annoying music but now I am not so sure haha
8880 was my childhood dream. The most funniest thing about this set is that after 30 years late it's still the same hardly affordable for me ))
Sariel's voice, 2020 is a very strange year
A bit late but Merry Christmas! I got your book 'Incredible LEGO Technic' as one of my gifts!
I agree with sets like 8880 and 8275. However, I think too much emphasis is placed on licences. The BMW for example. The first combination of bike and licence, sure, but other than that it did nothing new. Licences were around for quite a while (in fact you could see the Williams F1 racer as Technic since it was a copy of a Technic set (Silver Champion)) so it was inevitable that there would be a licenced bike. The Ducati on the other hand is the first bike with a gearbox, that one would make more sense to me.
I would rather see sets like 8480 and 8479. I might be biased because of nostalgia, but the former was the first to use a transmission for different functions, the latter was the forerunner of Mindstorms, with much more possibilities than the control centers. Another one I want to mention is 8868: the first set with a compressor, and it would take nearly 20 years before the next came. One could argue that a compressor isn't that important since we rarely saw them, but I think that's rather a case of missed opportunities than compressors not being important. We could use more pneumatic sets to begin with.
Just my €0,02
Love the control centre set from 1990. Hours n days n months of play. Still own it
Sariel, great to hear you speaking as opposed to using subtitles. Looking forward to more videos like this.
Excellent list Sariel! I new from the beginning which one would be no 1. I was 13 when 8880 was released and I got it on christmas. Maybe the best christmas ever :-D
I still have the 8851 (constructed) sitting on my shelf - one of the few original old pieces that I grew up with that I have left.
I'd have it constructed on my shelf too if I had one!
I am glad you included the very first Techinc set. I have seen many overlook that set, when it is the most important of them all, as without it, Technic sets would not exist at all today.
I’m a beginner in technic stuff and I’m wondering if there is 1 technic set that is under 300USD that I should get for pieces etc that is available right now. Do you have any ideas on sets?
I think that set 8880 was the best and most iconic set of lego technic line ever. I love this new idea of video that you are talking, it is cool.
Great video! good to know that my favorite sets (volvo excavator, 9398 and 41999 (both permanently showed in my living room)) are in the top 10 list :-)!
I would like to put under consideration the 8062 sets where you can build 6 different models, all of them has printed instructions and some of them bizarre and odd like the hokey player!
Agreed with your valuation.
Thank you for this amazing video.
I would add 42114 volvo if it's remote control gearbox was working properly. It would be the first remote control gearbox of lego technic if we exclude custom creations.
Even with help of Technicopedia, your deep knowledge & of Technic sets, still astonishing & commendable.
Even surprised me with the ‘long story short’ in 10:40.
But I’m still happy to be the owner of 2 sets of your listed 11 sets.
This blew my mind over and over again
Love the voice over!
Buddy how do you know the price of a kidney???🤔🤔🤔
I wanna get the porsche 911 gtr rs but i can't find it for $299.99 anymore. It almost doubled in price on every website. I guess its because its not manufactured anymore. I am open for website suggestions where I can buy it for cheaper or any suggestions in general.
Ahhh, the 8880... I got one a few years ago when I was around 13. Spent many happy evenings putting it together. I took it apart again for some reason a while ago, but still have all the parts. Should find the time to put it together again some day.
My dad got me 8880 (supercar) from a car boot sale when I was just a kid, and I still thank it as the toy that sparked my interest in cars and engineering that lasts to this day.
It was the first set I owned, and made modifications to it (including a pneumatic opening engine cover), and I will NEVER part with it!
Great list, and you're right that it's hard to pick just 10 when there's been over 400 of them since Technic started out. Maybe for folks reading this list, I'm gonna add 10 more to look into (in no particular order, all are awesome in their own right):
8466: Now a 20 year old set, it's almost got the same functions as the 8880 (no rear-wheel steering, we wouldn't see that again until their re-designed version in the 42054), except it was built in an off-roader format and was given one-off tires, similar to the ones on the Power Puller. It also had this over-built system of softly opening doors via pneumatics, somewhat similar to the idea behind the 42069s doors.
8284: A large Technic Service truck, made in the style of the American semis, and an amazing piece of design and function that is as close to the old Model Team sets as we're likely to ever get with Technic. Also one of the few Technic trucks to actually include double-wheels on its rear axles.
8479: The barcode multi-set, a more primitive version of the Control Center, it was a recycling truck that could be made to follow instructions by scanning a barcode as it drove over it.
8421: The OG Mobile Crane, combining electrics and pneumatics in one set, while still being compact and looking utterly awesome by still using the old brick beams.
8294: A small, insignificant looking set (a simple excavator), but one of the first to be made to use the then new Power Functions accessories box, including its lights which most other conversion sets subsequently dismissed. It also included some of the reworked Linear Actuators that were designed to hook up to the PF Motors.
8110: The Unimog, something I'm surprised wasn't on the list. While it wasn't RC like the 42030, it was the oldest one I can remember that was Licensed, and it did come with many new ideas, like the motorized compressor (that would later show up in the motorized version of the 42053), the introduction of the Portal Axles and the new tires that were later used by a lot of the Technic Trucks.
42024: Nothing really special here, this was a container truck that could be motorized via Power Functions, but I particularly liked its trick of being usable as either a dump-truck or a container collecting truck. It also had a pleasant color scheme.
42032: A small, entry-level set from 2015, but one of the most fun sets at that scale that LEGO's put out so far. Just the right size and easy controls to use, plus it's the first use of the small track-links as far as i can tell without being actually driven by any sprockets, making it basically the only set I ever used that worked on every surface without the need for cheater-wheels.
42105: The first Technic Boat to actually float, so far. Not much to the set, it looks nice, but the fact that it has the first purpose-made hulls with Technic Connectors puts it in my book of awesome sets.
42042: A motorized crawler crane with limited forward-reverse drive, but more importantly, with a multi-purpose gearbox that made use of a single motor to operate two simultaneous functions. Makes this list just because of how usable it is as a play-set with minor modifications, as it can be used to pick up and move stuff around with its claw.
Please make a video of possible. Thanks. :)
Isn’t the first licensed Technic set the 8110 Mercedes-Benz Unimog?
I think the BMW was earlier
You're right, my bad!
Technically, those Star Wars sets back in the 00s were released under the Technic banner, so...
The Unimog was also the first with portal hubs, not the 9398. So based on the parameters in this list, should have occupied one of the spots.
I really enjoyed this video
Now I'm just excited for you to do a "10 Worst" video...
42070 will be 1st
8275 was indeed a revolution, to control by IR the creations, I have waiting that for so long. It also enhance many field like truck trial. I would like also to mention the unimog which had been a great breakthrough in Lego Technic, big truck, licensed, motor compressor and pneumatics. Defensively a good set to play and own for the parts. And of course the supercar like Porsche Chiron Sian has increase the popularity of Lego for non-lefo fan, it helps a lot the technic field. Back in 2006, the technic line was pretty dead, and now it represents a significant part or the sale (thanks to the licensed sets). Thanks for he video ! It brings back lot of memory !
I will never tire of saying it 2007-2017 sets are the best
I bought the 8880 for my first ever paycheck back in 1998! It blew my mind how mechanically sophisticated it was.
I thought 8110 should be in it since it was the first license set? Correct me if I am wrong
Surprised the 8868 Air Tech Claw Rig didn't make it onto the list, considering its compressor technology and rather complex pneumatic piping setup. It was also the height of cool when I was in elementary school, so perhaps I am biased.
I have the #1 set! ~ had it since new, great fun kit
Wasn't the 2011 Unimog also licensed? There were also tons of licensed Ferrari sets in the 00s under the Racers line, but those were essentially still Technic sets.
I feel like 42114 6x6 Articulated Hauler (Volvo A60H) also belongs to this list. It is was the first to introduce the first motorized (automated) physical gearbox
im glad i managed to get my 41999 in good time.. i failed to get it while it was still at the official online store but then instead ordered from 1 of the resellers like couple days after it was sold out for not a much higher price than the original price was.
My sets individual nr is
"EK 03284 of 20000"
I had to pause. Listen Sariel, I've been following you for years and years and years by now. Big fan. Listen - KEEP DOING THIS, this format is GREAT - Don't be shy to use your voice, it's great and your English is perfect. More voiced videos!!
Thanks a lot, but I'm sure that my English needs a lot of work. When I was in Australia, almost nobody could understand me.
@@searme don't worry I could understand you perfectly! Subtitles does help ofc.
I expected motorized excavator (8043), since it has the most remotely controlled functions. Still a very nice list and good to hear your voice, I think it's more vivid that way!
My HONORABLE MENTIONS:
42113 Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey - You cannot have it even if you Didn't want it anyway.
42114 6x6 Volvo Articulated Hauler - 3 speed manual gearbox in a remotely controlled truck.
I like it. What's your favorite one tho? Answer below
btw: I have this one at 2:22 and it is probably, with the 42055, my favourite
I'm confused? I thought set 8110, the Unimog was the first licensed set?
I was really surprised not to see it in the countdown at all, for that matter.
I have the 8851 Excavator! I've got good memories on that set!
Coolness!😎👍
great video unbrick me made a similar video in which he showed the timeline of lego technic split into different eras the beginning era the 9v era the pf era and the powered up era
Got the 8880 as a child and still have it. Countless hours did I try to understand the workings of the transmission and the differentials.
I was hoping for the 8480 Space Shuttle. It has a gear box in it, but it is not used as usual, but to divert the motor power to four different functions. Something that was never done until then, and is very rarely used since. It also had the small red motor, which was only used in one other 'normal' set...
After seeing the Porsche, I was quite sure that it will be the only supercar on the list and it made me a bit sad... and then bang, my absolute favourite, 8880 closed the list :) I am so happy to have this holy grail on my shelf.
I have some sets from video. I have only 42056 from 1:8 models, because I don't fan exotic supercars(Bugatti, Lamborghini) and I still wait for something different, example Rally cars(Lancia Delta Integrale), more race cars... I have 8880: Super Car, when I saw very good price + original box(little damage, but still original box), I made insta buy.
for me, as a person who mainly composes big motorized models, the planetary wheel hubs in the 42099 set are as important as control +, or perhaps more important.
Very interesting video. It's not everyday you see Sariel posting (Jk it is)
I am Missing the Space Shuttle 8480 and the Air Claw Truck 8868 both had realy special stuff back in the day !
Great video and great to hear you! :) Just lower the music volume a little. Will only get better from here!
No (negative) special mention of 42113 Osprey and its release-stop cementing the no-military-licensed-set-rule instead of opening the door to more magnificent technic?
Do you do the instruction manual for the GT40
No.
Okay
Do you do the part list for the GT40?
Someone living in Moscow constantly sells a set of 42999 on a private deals site. It stays unsold year after year. :)
The price shifts in 700-800 euro range.
Number 8 i buy for ~600 PLN :) At that time it was normal price in polish shops.
It was a brilliant parts donor
I own MISB 41999. This set is cherry on top/crown jewel of my whole lego collection ;)
I like videos you can listen to (vs you have to pause the video every now and then to read the written text) - so much more enjoyable!
And so much less accessible.
@@searme less accessible? what do you mean?
I mean there are some people who aren't native English speakers, most of the humankind actually, and reading English is way, way easier for them that listening to English.
@@searme Well then, we don't have to look any further - I am personally an example of a non-native English speaker. I find your talking to be much easier to digest than videos with lots of text - because I have to stop such videos to read the subtitles. I'm a slow reader (being non-native plays a role) + I can't see what else is going on the screen while I'm reading the subtitles. Finally, and most importantly, for such videos I must drop everything and do nothing but watch them, whereas with regular videos I can, for example be listening to them while making coffee in the morning. As many people, I don't have much free time, so I am unlikely to spend it 100% on RUclips videos vs hobbies or other things. However, I do like to listen on RUclips while doing something else. I know many people listen to RUclips while driving - they can't read subtitles either. I'd maybe invest in a good mic (and have subtitles _in addition_ to voice) if I were worried about accessibility, but otherwise videos with a live human talking are much better than written articles in form of a video. You probably could have had more subscribers and views imo
I think the 9398 is the best, it introduced 3 new electronic parts, L-motor, V2 reciever and most useful, the servo motor.
talking about the price : one set from the 90's became so rare that its price varies between 500€ (second hand without instruction neither a box) to nearly 3000€ for a fully brand new set, the 5571
one kidney? i think you can be prepare to pay more than you can for some sets in future times
8094!!! i forgot this one. It was a dream for me at the time (along with the 8865 but this one is now in my possession)
8880! i bought it last month (fully complete with instructions but no box : 90€) this was also a dream when i was a kid and i wasn't disappointed to build it few weeks ago. It has everything : popup lights , 4 gears gearbox, independent 4 wheel drive and 4 wheel steer
Cześć Sariel! Dlaczego technicopedua nie jest kontynuowana?
To raczej pytanie do Blackbirda :)
I have built many technic models from all eras, but only 8880 was the one which looked awesome at ANY building stage. Only 8448 comes close with its chassis.
Still have the 8880 super car, the 8094 programmable robot/plotter, the 8851 excavator from the 80's. Also the 8868 Air Tech Claw Rig (1992), 8862 Bachoe Grader (1989), 8485 Control Centre II (1995) and the very cute 8852 Robot from '87 or so. I simply cannot part with them. Still have to repair the 8485 T-rex though. It's plastic actuator/push rods have weakend and broken because of its age 😖
I don’t think that the 41999 was so “limited” because i remember back in 2013 , when i was a lot into legos, i could seen this set for a whole year in the stores. Never bought it lol but it s a huge set!
The red tractor number 851.
(And I had the car chassis 853 on place 9. Square pistons and no suspension or differential )
One of my favorite LEGO Technic kits is the 8480 Space Shuttle. While it's not too innovative in subject matter; we haven't seen another space-themed Technic model since, mechanically it was one of my most challenging builds and most fun to use. Micromotor for the win! Wait, uh... It was never used again...
Was expecting to see the barcode truck in there.
It was the introduction for lift arms and beams (which actually makes it the grandfather of modern technic!) , one of the very very few sets with sensors, and a unique control system.
I wish I had all of these sets!
Thanks for the list but I know for a fact I can’t afford most of them...
You forgot the first licensed technic super car was the 2005 lego Enzo Ferrari 8653, although it was 1:10 scale. I loved that set.
No, I did not. 8653 was branded as part of Racers line, not Technic, even though it used Technic pieces.
@@searme very true, forgot the two f1 cars and the Enzo where licensed under the racers line.
How could you not mention the 8455 pneumatic backhoe??!!! A masterpiece of cramming full pneumatic functionality into a set. Its got the most pneumatic pieces of a technic set and definitely proved to be a mild challenge to a Lego fan like myself.
Actually the first Licenced Technic Set was the Mercedes-Benz Unimog U400 from 2011.
The P in Pneumatics is silent.
Wow, sorry you can't handle his accent.
Geez.
@@Tractors101 Not the point - he strives for perfection and will not achieve it without constructive feedback.
@@DrWhom it's not about constructive feedback, where he lives people may say things quite differently than we are used to, there's many changes to the English language made within different countries, America and Britain are a great example of this. Heck who knows how English is spoken in Sariels country, it probably isn't his first language anyway. I personally feel that Sariel has the right to pronounce any words in the way that he prefers, and not for us to try and get him to say things "correctly" . As I said before, there is no correct or incorrect way to say something because it's different in every country.
Okay, rant over.
@@Tractors101 I hope, I'm not making things up but as far as I remember Pawel (=Sariel) studied English. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
@@snoor28 well he would have had to, because I don't think it's his first language. As such, he won't be perfect at it and his accent will also make things sound a bit different than how people who have spoken English their entire life talk. That's just how it is, can't do anything about it. I personally like his accent and I enjoy the videos where he speaks.
Cool
The V-22 Osprey is another unicorn...
As a recalled set, it's unlikely to have any significant impact on the Technic line.
I would add the LEGO 42114, because it's the first LEGO set with a "usable" LEGO gearbox
I noticed that the dodge charger can be a lowrider car with pneumatic system and a bit smaller wheels.
I have two of those sets, three if you count the Unimog (the real first licensed set). They're actually my least favorite sets, but I realize you're comparing game-changers, not most enjoyable sets. I'd like to see your top 10 favorite sets though, as you've become somewhat of a staple for Technic reviews in the past decade.
And happy new year! 2020 will be over soon, if not its troubles. Stay safe.
8868! My dream when I was a kid. Actually still a dream
I owned 7 of the sets if I ounted correctly. So I think i did something right :-D
I wish lego made the new tesla roadster just like the Chiron Porsche and Lamborghini but there is so little info about the car. I am fine with the model itself tho, definitely would buy
When will you review the new Lego Ghostbusters ECTO-1 set?
I won't be reviewing it, sorry. Too expensive and not that interesting to me.
@@searme are you serious? It’s the ghostbusters ecto-1!! It’s the most iconic and recognisable movie car ever created? and it’s not that expensive, size, I’ve bought it and I’m not even an adult yet...
Yes, I'm serious. I don't care for the Ghostbusters movies much and I have zero interest in this car, sorry.
W H A T
You don’t care for the Ghostbusters movies?
That’s ok it’s your opinion
2:29
me: that little beast changed my life launching me in technic
10:15
me: that UCS technic set is epic but only in one exemplar
I think the Volvo Zeux Concept should be on here. It's nothing groundbraking as far as complexity goes, but it is (to my knowledge) the only licensed model of something that was just a concept at the time of release. And even more importantly, it wasn't a technic version of a ready concept, but a design made by Lego and Volvo together.
The BMW bike's B-model is a licensed concept too and it came earlier.
I just got the Chiron and I got the sian as a birthday present
I actually think that the lego technic 41999 set is awesome! I have both the 2012 version and the special edition version and theyre both amazing!!! LEGO Technic should definitely make more special edition sets like this!
Why?
@@UltimateLegoProductions123 why not?
The Mercedes Unimog and Arocs have to be on the list
I’m really surprised there was no mention of mindstorms sets. I get that they might not be technically “technic”, but a honorary mention was almost in order
Mindstorms is a whole separate theme.
I feel like you insisted too much on licensed sets rather than functions... From what I know of Technics, the space shuttle, the multicontrol set and the air tech claw rig could have their place here ( at least in honorable mentions ) : space shuttle for it's gearbox controlling the functions, the multicontrol set for it's remotely controlled gearbox, and the air tech claw rig for it's impressive use of pneumatics both in A and B model
I know this list is subjective but I definitely would have added 42043 instead of the crawler. The Arocs was the first truck with more than two axles to be fully suspended and introduced the modern pneumatics. Surely that's more important than being a bit more off-roady! The crawlers performance is still very poor by RC standards. And the Unimog is the first licenced Technic machine, not the inferior Volvo loader. Unimog was also the first to have over 2000 pcs, and introduced a bunch of new parts. So for me, Volvo loader and crawler are replaced by Unimog and Arocs. I would also have 8868 in there somewhere for having the first motorised pneumatics, allowing motorised functions to be placed anywhere in the model (like the gripper at the extreme end of the crane arm) with all the controls in one central location. Why important? With its new motor pump it converts the rotary energy of a motor to pressure, then uses hoses to route that energy wherever it's needed, then used rams to turn that pressure into a linear force to do work. In terms of being an important step forward in mechanical authenticity, 8868 released in 1992 still hasn't been beat.
So if you think about it 9398 is a more better since it introduced the servo motor and the best set for offroad without mods
The one that was on number 3 I have that and build it when I am only 11
I think that 8448 should be here, because 8448 is a beginner of new style of building, that we are still using
Thanks
