I was in love with the 9398 back then and I'm happy my parents saw that. That was one of the best gifts I ever got. One suspension piece is broken, but the spring wasn't, which made the problem able to solve. Awesome set, awesome look.
The geometry on the 9398 is simply better. More clearance, seems like more flex, geared better, better steering. All it needs is set of BuWizz aftermarket motors and it’ll be the best off-roader by a long shot. The chassis is already good, it just needs more power/torque.
I really wished you had done all these tests with swapped gears too. For a real comparison of these two. As for crawling technic hub also offers accelerometer values which is a huge plus
I like my 9398 but wished it had locking diffs and/or crab steering- that’d make a sweet rock crawler. Basically totally independent front/rear steer/power. Was surprised when Lego have done two models since that one and still no 4ws
Thanks for the comparison. I fully agree to your conclusion, 9398 was not an ideal crawler but still better than this new Control+ thingy. I just built 42099 up today and tested it inside the house. Few piece count, too much backlash in the steering so it cannot even go straight forwards and backwards, not enough power (2x XL motors geared up so they have less torque than 2x L motors), the bright light orange parts do not fit to any other technic set and once the simple challenges are completed there is no point in playing with the set any more.

The effective Bluetooth range will actually vary, depending on what device you are using and the age of the device, where is for the infrared remote. The version one came with the Sun, maybe in the poorest range, but if you get a newer or even an aftermarket knockoff version remote, you’ll find they actually increase the range quite a lot, depending on both the remote and the receiver. When I first got the Lego set for the control, plus Rockcrawler I had a cheap smart phone had very poor Bluetooth. The range was maybe 3 feet before Bluetooth or just shut off but with my current phone and I’ve got an iPhone 13 Bluetooth range is way more than 40 m, also testing their pulling strength by getting both models to pull one and offer is actually an unfair test on the control plus, the control plus motors are designed so that once a certain level of torque is applied on the motor as to actually stop it from losing. It will actually cut the power to the motor to stop it burning out. Where as the order version had no such system
Makes me glad I bought 9398 all those years ago! Looking at 42099, it definitely wins in the range department, though something like the Buwizz might be able to rival it. The new parts look cool as well, but they might show up in a cheaper set in the future. I'll stick with my 9398 for now :)

The new one is just not cool. It does not look desirable, and it doesn’t perform that way either. Maybe without the power cuts it will show its better colors, but we’ll have to see. The rockcrawler, on the other hand, is just so massive and capable, despite the unstability and short range. They’re like a boomer vs zoomer, these two. This has made want to go and resurrect my old 9398 collecting dust on the shelf!

In your review of the 42099 you stated that there were gears in the drive system that reduced the torque, which allows the 42099 be as fast as it is. Have you tried changing those gears? For example would a 3:1 reduction be enough to allow the 42099 to successfully get to the top of the slope test with the plank? I'm somewhat tempted to get the 42099, but the power shutdown of the engines under stress is putting me off since i'd want to use the parts to either build a self designed 4x4 vehicle or a tank from it. And i like my builds to at least be somewhat capable of going off-road, so just checking if i'd be better off with just getting some PF XL motors

Very cool and informative video about the 2 lego technic offroad trucks .. !!! I would be very happy if someone could tell me which is the first song. !!! He's just epic and makes the video a lot better
they should have made a PF compatible radio module and a proportional radio control system, that would have solved many problems At least the legos would have been filled with proper remotes.
i dont think this is correct comparison. 1. 9398 has 2 motors for wheels which makes him all wheel drive. not like 42099 which has 1 motor to drive. 2. with this of pf control range we better use wire. 3. maybe lego or smbd will make update so the power + will not cut power for motors. and idea if you put cotrol plus to 9398 how it will drive. And need to notice from the release of 9398 too many many years passed and have to follow rules on kids safety. maybe this is influence on different aspect of the toys.
This is the correct comparison of the sets as they come out of the box, without modifications. Which is the only fair way to compare two commercial products.
While I get that the comparison kind of needs to be about the stock models, I feel like a more productive comparison would be with them both having the same control method. The bluetooth controller seems to be the key limiting factor for much of the performance comparison, and it'd be nice to know which one actually has the most oomph
But is the control system of the Powered Up hub/app not the part responsible for cutting power when the motor undergoes too much load? Because if that's the case, the actual gearing needs to be tested under the same conditions (either both with a motor applying constant force, or both with a motor that cuts out under too much strain) Forgive me if I'm just confused, I haven't actually got any of the Powered Up sets to tinker with yet

That's one of the reasons that the Extreme off roader failed.

LEGO did same as Boeing with 737 MAX 8. Rushed to market instead of making it better.
The other thing one could try is flipping the gears on the motor for more torque a s less speed and see if that makes a difference.
If you swap the gears, motors never stall, the problem is that lego choose a fast gear ratio and this crawler has really no torque.
You should combine all the good points of each crawler and combine them to 1 amazing crawler

There is a simple gear ratio change by Australian Lego Fan (no extra parts needed) to give the 42099 more torque. He even does a comparison and does the gear change in between and with the mod the 42099 smokes the 9398. 9398 still has slightly better suspension and steering tho
Don't use 9v rechargeables lol they suck
i remember when i first built 9398 i kept on using all of its parts so now its just the gearbox and wheels
DiamondDoom.YT hook up a motor and battery and you have a working thing
I will always check SARIEL's Brick before buying 95% of my legos. Sometimes I can not be persuaded out of a buy but I always want SARIELS opinion! Thanks for your videos your great.
Congratulations on a very interesting comparison, I also tried the Off-road on 42099 and found it pass quite well.
9398 has some rare pieces while 42099 has better range
Would the glasses go on the headlights or dash?
Asking real questions here ;)
Heh lol
On my 9398 i put on power puller tires and replaced the IR with an sbrick...
I had the 9398, but it used to be slow but powerful. I also mention the fact that it need 1 bit of grass in the gear assembly to be stopped, I was obliged to destroy it to remove the bit of grass that got stuck in and I never was able to rebuild it and it decieved me a lot because I liked it so much
You should switch out the system on the new set an dsee how that compairs
It'd be interesting to see these compete on the same wheels...
(is it just the bigger tires make 42099 faster and less powerful?)
(the word you wanted was "pendular suspension")
No, it's not the (only slightly) bigger tires, it's the gear ratio, as demonstrated in my review of the 42099.
Very cool and informative video about the 2 lego technic offroad trucks .. !!! I would be very happy if someone could tell me which is the first song. !!! He's just epic and makes the video a lot better
can you add a buwizz with the 50$ difference?
so the 9398 go faster
Lego using an L motor for the servo is nice, should be a lot of torque from the servo
I like that you can turn any motor into servo and even set its limits
But they totally destroyed by making new connectors
The first high quality Battle
It's 200€??? I thought the 2012 model is 600 because once saw for 600
That was it's original price :)
@@enigma1256 oh
Because it's discontinued you can only get it second hand, so it's more expensive than the LEGO sell price.
Of the 2019 sets which is your favorite
We haven't seen all 2019 set yet.
Really I thought the fall release sets were till the end of the year
Oh is sage lego a hitdawn
9398 my first set after dark age :)
Music please
please try a test with tires from 42099 to 9398.... I think will be surprize
And I don't think so. The difference in performance comes from difference in gear ratios, not tires, which are almost the same in size anyway.
If LEGO could make 9398 control with either radio or blue tooth...
"42099? Eww get lost."
they should have made a PF compatible radio module and a proportional radio control system, that would have solved many problems
At least the legos would have been filled with proper remotes.

i dont think this is correct comparison. 1. 9398 has 2 motors for wheels which makes him all wheel drive. not like 42099 which has 1 motor to drive. 2. with this of pf control range we better use wire. 3. maybe lego or smbd will make update so the power + will not cut power for motors. and idea if you put cotrol plus to 9398 how it will drive. And need to notice from the release of 9398 too many many years passed and have to follow rules on kids safety. maybe this is influence on different aspect of the toys.
This is the correct comparison of the sets as they come out of the box, without modifications. Which is the only fair way to compare two commercial products.
Thanks now I know wich one to by
While I get that the comparison kind of needs to be about the stock models, I feel like a more productive comparison would be with them both having the same control method. The bluetooth controller seems to be the key limiting factor for much of the performance comparison, and it'd be nice to know which one actually has the most oomph
The key limiting factor is gearing between motors and wheels, not the controller.
But is the control system of the Powered Up hub/app not the part responsible for cutting power when the motor undergoes too much load? Because if that's the case, the actual gearing needs to be tested under the same conditions (either both with a motor applying constant force, or both with a motor that cuts out under too much strain)
Forgive me if I'm just confused, I haven't actually got any of the Powered Up sets to tinker with yet
At least the 42099 is a better off-roader than the 42070 😂🤣
But then, what isn't?
@@searme 42070's B-model maybe?
Sound plausible ;)

Can you make kv 2? (tank)
I'm making one right now. Stay tuned.
Why does the 9398 seems to be rlly slow
