Sariel, the superstructure rotation and the model's moving speed are decreased because Lego wanted to make it like the real thing, and the real beast is REALLY slow
B Lau Well if I drive it across my room at 11:05 at night on my birthday I would probably be a teenager when it is at the opposite side of the room. #birthdayhype
I'm sure that's great consolation to any kid who has to wait 5 minutes (!) for his new toy to rotate ONCE. You know this is a children's toy, not some high-grade model for history professors, right?
Hear me out here guys, replace the clutch gears with normal gears and ditch the XL motor and rig up a Dremal tool to it and have some fun chasing your friends.
I just had a mini nerdgasm omg this is so awesome u got this set early for review can't wait for a release date for this set love Lego technic so much yes😆
My experiences on sluggishness of this set: 1 The base (pedrail) part is actually quite smooth if you leave enough space between gears. 2 The sluggishness comes from : The upper conveyor belt.It is too close to the walls and the small bars on the belt can hit the walls quite often, especially at the point where bars go to the bottom. The bucket wheel. You can see clearly the whole system get stuttered when those black gears in the bucket wheel reach the gaps between two wheel gear pieces, simply because the gap is too large. And it takes some efforts for the motor to overcome that gap. It is difficult to fix this. I managed to barely make the system working constantly by loosing all the black gears in the bucket wheel, too loose I almost need to not fully push in some of the parts to make more room for smoother running gears. All in all, not the greatest experience I have with LEGO Technics. I bought this mainly because there is a killer deal on costco.ca ($200 CAD) and it is a great source of MOC pieces.
Wow. You really put in some speed for this review. I like how your rotating plate bends in a struggle to hold this monster! A must-have for me. Thanks for the review!
I was expecting a much higher price than what it officially is, so £179.99 is very reasonable. The digging function though, I think you need to have a big mountain load of 2x2 and smaller Lego bricks and pieces piled up in a space to maybe make it perform effectively, even if, granted, it's gonna be messy and impractical. Definitely impressive in terms of scale and sophistication, as cumbersome as it may be to play with some of the functions because of its massive size and weight. Though saying that the dump truck that comes with it, which is basically a redux of the 42035 set, does help in counteracting these issues greatly; getting at least another one of those 42035 sets could make quite a mining site area and boost playability even further. Still, besides looks, this easily beats the Porsche 911 GT3 RS in every other aspect.

I haven't bought any Lego in 10+ years (my last set was 8466), but last year's 42043 made me really interested again. I'll most likely get this one though. I just realised how much I miss building things.
The pros/cons and the people who would like/dislike were very funny and true!! My only criticism is the use of yellow on those tracks. I despise how often that color is used, but it makes sense for construction vehicles. Hopefully Lego brings back the Technic Hailfire Droid and uses these tracks! Great review Sariel!
Always enjoy your reviews! Was going back over this one out of curiosity ( I purchased the set as soon as I saw it was released) and had to add my thoughts on the set... My apologies for not doing this sooner. Any GBC enthusiast saw this and said "FINALLY! A worthy GBC base set!" As stated above, I went and got this as soon as I saw it's release. And yes, GBC geek here... The fun part is creating a receiving area that fits, and aids, the bucket wheel to 'dig' parts. Not difficult, just fun!! GBC-driven comments aside, this set is a Technic enthusiast goldmine. So many gears, shafts, and, well... parts! Heck, any set with 2 conveyors, a bucket wheel, and drive tracks, that moves, rotates, elevates, and takes up more space than it should... and includes a truck(!) is a pretty cool set.
this is proly one of the best lego sets ive ever seen...as a fan of bionicle and nexo knights i really do love this beast with its functions and stuff O_O totally buying it
Hey Sariel ! NOTE : No more music at the end of the video wright during the final note and too fast text during the Hailfire Droid sequence. It's just for you to notice :) But I guess that very slight mistakes are not a problem wright ? I also would like to thank you, Your content is absolutely awesome :)
Today I walked into my local Lego store planning to buy the Star Wars Kylo Ren action figure for $20. I walked out with this set. I haven't started it yet but I think the $280 setback is going to be worth it. :)
What you should do is modify the whole system to where it can be driven remotly, go a little faster, the bucket and tracks get more power and a hamster seat so it has a forman.
thats exactly how I built it - extending the experience into a week of building, not a day. It's great from the assembly side but honeslty as soon as I finished and tried out the power functions, I never wanted to touch it again. And now it just stands on display in my living room. Compared to 42065 for example, which I play with on the daily, it's a shame with this much bricks and potential.
These kind of excavators are used in open pit mines to dig into the side of oil sands. They are not meant for digging a hole, but to dig into the side of a pile of something. ;) I loved the video though, you are the best and most thorough Lego technic reviewer on RUclips, keep up with the amazing videos!
I have always wanted a lego bucket wheel excavator and I thought it was just too obscure for them to ever make. Of course now they release it as I am parting ways with their products.
I'm willing to bet most of the gear functions could be separated and controls could be moved to a centralized switch board. The boom could certainly be extended with some fairly simple modifications to the cantilever setup, too.
Hey Sariel, I think that if you use two of the 56898 & 56904, you could get the effect of a double tire without making the model much wider. The issue is the diameter is smaller than the 15413 & 56145 together. The only way I could resolve this was if you use the 44369 tire and not the 15413 one.
It moves and rotates slow so you can keep adjusting the spinning buckets. After a rotation or 2 they wont be grabbing much material. Constant small adjustments needed while excavating just like the real machine to keep material flowing.
Note on comment about the slow speed of rotation of the main rig. .. as i recall from documentary about these machines, it is in fact realistic. For me, there are no cons... this model is simply fantastic
42055 Racing: Take off all the excess weight (Exception of the bucket), then mod it to have a better system, then race 'em! It really is the next biggest LEGO thing!
If I own this set, I'll just push this excavator around with my hand and keep the buckets and conveyor belt rotating. I don't think it is faster than a snail. Cool gearbox, though, might download instructions to have a little look-see.
It's odd that they didn't angle the buckets a bit more forward. I assume that it would make it easier to pick up items as well as keeping them more secure during the rotational transit up to the conveyor belt chute. Are these yellow 90 degree inner teeth bends unique to this set? Wonder why the axle holes weren't rotated about 15-20* to make the buckets seat differently.
Hey!!! I found a way to make it go fast without needing any extra pieces!! the greay gear that connects with the other gears in the superstructure, next under it there will be 2 dark grey gears, switch place with those and you should get a speed boost
it s huge! of course, it has some troubles due to the flex of parts and small space between each part. at this size, it becomes more troublesome. by making a few changes, it would be a nice minifig scale digger. it s pretty cool to see in operation.
By the way, I saw a different Video on this set and the red and black axels on top of the superstructure near the gear box you can pull out of the attachments and the drive system and rotation can move freely. I don't know if the bucket rotation can still work, but it makes rotation a lot easier!
the only real cons in my opinion are the backlash and the color vomit choices.... The bucket stops because of the lego overprotective methods toward kids. The speed of going forward and rotating are realistic .Gr8 set can't wait to get my hands on it. But the real king this year in my opinion is the Claas Tractor. Insta buy 2-3 copies of that gem.
Very good review! I still think LEGO should have put 2 XL motors, would have been easy. But whatever, it's neat either way. And it being slow I actually appreciate because real ones move slower than half 1 MPH.
You should get another set like this so you can have the big digger and then it can feed all the rocks into the separator ( model b ) that would be cool
I wasn't super excited by this model prior to watching this review, but I feel like buying it now. Price/performance seems to outweigh the playability limitation of the scoop.
Im TOTALLY going to get this set. Build it. And then dissasemble it and RE-build it when someone figures out how to mod it to be controlled with 2 Sbricks and make instructions for that. (Probably going to try to do it myself first though.)
Apparently the biggest Lego Box is the UCS Millennium Falcon I believe which surprises me since the Taj Mahal has more pieces, I mean of depth of the box of course, in the other two categories it is a very small amount larger
Wczoraj zamówiłem ten set, za niecałe 715zł. Będzie budowane;) To mój pierwszy zestaw technic. Do tej pory budowałem własne lokomotywy i wagony, na torze 9v.
I dont really care if it doesnt look like something that exists because it looks really cool in my opinion and they got the actual bucket wheel right which is important. I really want it, and if I can might add better gearing and more motors.
+Evan C And the price per piece rule is $0.10 with exceptions to power functions. The fact that your paying 7 cents for a battery box and 7 cents for an XL motor is unbelievable
You can't pick things up because you aren't doing it the way the real thing works. It runs up against a near vertical face and chews away at it, sort of like the way you are doing with the tray of pieces. The real deal doesn't pick anything up off the ground. It would be really cool if you could actually dig dirt with this thing, but I suspect it would quickly jam up all the gears.
You could probably do some rather nifty planetary gear systems using these new annular gears. Especially since the sets gives you enough quarters for three complete ones. One possibility would be building a fairly accurate to real life automatic gearbox, albeit one useless for anything else than a show piece/tech demo because of it's size, but hey.
I wonder what are you doing after review of the lego sets do you deconstruct them and put them in the boxes and store full boxes untouched somwhere or do you just keep it displayed or do you deconstruct them and mix it with all other parts of your sets?

Dammit, and I was so hyped to finally have an Excavator to drag race with.
Zafran Orbian iii
to be fair though, the speed is somewhat realistic...
Exactly what I wanted to comment
Having build it, I can tell you it’s stupidly under-motorized, slow and not functional. It’s a shame because it’s a hell of a set though
Sariel, the superstructure rotation and the model's moving speed are decreased because Lego wanted to make it like the real thing, and the real beast is REALLY slow
You have a good point! :-)
good for real life machines, bad for toy ones
+Kendo121 Yep, because time is critical when you have tight play shedule with best friend.
ya the real ones go the same speed
also real machine doesn´t turn very much, it just go forward and back and every time it dig a little bit lower, so turning isn´t necesarry
"most children will be adults by the time it drives across the room"
LOL
Very Funny!
B Lau Well if I drive it across my room at 11:05 at night on my birthday I would probably be a teenager when it is at the opposite side of the room. #birthdayhype
It's true, My brother was 1 when I turned it on and now he's 4 and it still hasn't driven across the room
THE SLOW SPEED LET U DIG AND ROTAT AT THE SAME TIME AND IS REALISTIC
I'm sure that's great consolation to any kid who has to wait 5 minutes (!) for his new toy to rotate ONCE. You know this is a children's toy, not some high-grade model for history professors, right?
i would disagree most 10 year olds would find it to hard for them and they probably wouldnt be aloud to get this set
Ronan Mullan The word is "allowed". And the set is specifically targeted at children 12-16. Go explain to a 12yo kid how realistic it is.
True
Sariel's LEGO® Workshop Hey I'm twelve-almost-thirteen and I understand how it works but mostly because I'm a nerd
Hear me out here guys, replace the clutch gears with normal gears and ditch the XL motor and rig up a Dremal tool to it and have some fun chasing your friends.
You had me thinking “oh god” until the Dremal tool was mentioned lol
I just had a mini nerdgasm omg this is so awesome u got this set early for review can't wait for a release date for this set love Lego technic so much yes😆
Me too!
Actually the travelling speed it moves at is very accurate, these machines move very slow in real life. Love your videos, they are so in depth.
My experiences on sluggishness of this set:

"42055 racing will be the next big LEGO thing" Well, it's more exciting than 42056 racing :P.
Or 42051, as that set has been massively delayed for unknown (most likely budgetary) reasons.
+Redstoneprime316 The Airport Rescue Vehicle (42051) has been cancelled
+Christopher Morley why? Have TLG confirmed this?
why? i was looking forward to that
it is being released as 42068 this year 😁
The "Who will(won't) like this" sheet is gold! NIce review, I really want to buy this set now because I need many Technic pieces.
Wow. You really put in some speed for this review. I like how your rotating plate bends in a struggle to hold this monster!
A must-have for me. Thanks for the review!
Truck at the corner is holding on for dear life...
I own this set and I agree to every single word, argument, pros/cons listing that You have made sir. Well done!

An absolute beast. Great source for building a tracked vehicle
This just blows my mind!

Great review Sariel!
I have this set, if you take out the twin clutch gears by the motor and replace them with normal gears, it digs just fine
3 years have passed. Is your motor still functional?
@@filipeferreira9878 I sold the set a year ago, however the motor was still working fine then.
Always enjoy your reviews! Was going back over this one out of curiosity ( I purchased the set as soon as I saw it was released) and had to add my thoughts on the set... My apologies for not doing this sooner.

I just cannot believe it!
This will totally give me endless pleasure!
But it's going to take more than a day to complete!
You are by far the most comprehensive Lego reviewer on RUclips, hands down!
Thank you.
agreed! he really is the best lego reviewer on youtube!
this is proly one of the best lego sets ive ever seen...as a fan of bionicle and nexo knights i really do love this beast with its functions and stuff O_O totally buying it
and the best thing with lego technic is: lego dont care about how many parts they use or the price...wich can create beasts like this
The biggest lego set that I have ever seen! Another great review!! Keep up the good work!
Best review and enormous set! AWESOME
I remember going through the process of building this set
I'm 14 Years old and it took me *2 days* to finish it
It was fun torture :3
The Robloz Cheezit I am expecting it for my thirteenth birthday and would probaby take 15 hours
The Robloz Cheezit 42043 Arocs took me 7 hours so this one shouldn't take more than 10. Ps. I'm also 14 :P

I love your reviews, your sense of humor, and your affection for hamsters. Who could ask for more? Do you make house calls?
You're like the Jangbricks of speed builds. I love it.
this is one every lego fan needs
Are you going to review the B-model, or will it take to much time to take it apart and assemble another huge thing
I will, in a while. The building instructions are not available yet.
Okay, thank you
What set are you going to be reviewing next?
Michael Conway 42054, very soon.
I can't wait!
The new geared ring pieces would be perfect for a rotating take turret design!
What you should do is modify the whole system to where it can be driven remotly, go a little faster, the bucket and tracks get more power and a hamster seat so it has a forman.
Would you reccomend this set based on the building experience? I'm looking for something i can sink a few days into, building on and off.
It takes at least 8 hours for me in on sitting
thats exactly how I built it - extending the experience into a week of building, not a day. It's great from the assembly side but honeslty as soon as I finished and tried out the power functions, I never wanted to touch it again. And now it just stands on display in my living room. 27:32 you said it doesn't look like any bucket wheel excavator you seen before. it looks quite similar to sandvik pe100
It does as well!

I know. I never said I expect them to dig a hole. Most of them can dig below grade, though.
I have always wanted a lego bucket wheel excavator and I thought it was just too obscure for them to ever make. Of course now they release it as I am parting ways with their products.

I like fact its seems ti be minific compatibile. I bet dads and kids will have a lot of fun playing with it!
42055 Racing: Take off all the excess weight (Exception of the bucket), then mod it to have a better system, then race 'em!
It really is the next biggest LEGO thing!
This set looks amazing I'm very tempted to buy it my self
that's insanely cool. I'll rate 10/10.
If I own this set, I'll just push this excavator around with my hand and keep the buckets and conveyor belt rotating. I don't think it is faster than a snail. Cool gearbox, though, might download instructions to have a little look-see.
you go above and beyond with your reviews, you are awesome, bro!
for most lego sets the term "superstructure" has been kind of an overstatement. But here, it's an understatement.
I just bought it, I couldn't resist it anymore. My son of 9 will love it, but so do I :-) :-)
With a few small modifications this thing whould be perfect for a great ball contraption.
Nice Review :) I laughed hard at the conclusion at the end :D
I wonder how many hours it took to design this build and make a manual for it. It must be at least 1 or 2 years.
s0012823 This is a lot better flagship than the 42070 *"ALL-TERRAIN"* Truck
It's odd that they didn't angle the buckets a bit more forward. I assume that it would make it easier to pick up items as well as keeping them more secure during the rotational transit up to the conveyor belt chute. Are these yellow 90 degree inner teeth bends unique to this set? Wonder why the axle holes weren't rotated about 15-20* to make the buckets seat differently.
Im gonna sue lego for bullying that xl motor
Hey!!! I found a way to make it go fast without needing any extra pieces!! the greay gear that connects with the other gears in the superstructure, next under it there will be 2 dark grey gears, switch place with those and you should get a speed boost
it s huge!
of course, it has some troubles due to the flex of parts
and small space between each part.
at this size, it becomes more troublesome.
by making a few changes, it would be a nice
minifig scale digger.
it s pretty cool to see in operation.
Out of sheer curiosity, what is it with you and starting new line every few words?
lol, it s easier to read, I hate big blocks of text to read.
cyberfrank 2010 Um no, it's not. If I wanted to scroll three times to read a single sentence, I would read poetry.
I think the 10l axle in red is a older peice used with the lego sports line to make hockey goals.
Makes me think of a extremely slow chain saw when you said "You can even chase people while wielding it" or something like that.
Very good review! I still think LEGO should have put 2 XL motors, would have been easy. But whatever, it's neat either way. And it being slow I actually appreciate because real ones move slower than half 1 MPH.
I'm definitely gonna buy this set
You should get another set like this so you can have the big digger and then it can feed all the rocks into the separator ( model b ) that would be cool
I wasn't super excited by this model prior to watching this review, but I feel like buying it now. Price/performance seems to outweigh the playability limitation of the scoop.
Man, I've been waiting for this review for ages
Im TOTALLY going to get this set. Build it. And then dissasemble it and RE-build it when someone figures out how to mod it to be controlled with 2 Sbricks and make instructions for that. (Probably going to try to do it myself first though.)
Pleeeease Sariel mod it so it can speed drive around the house! It would be soooo funnnn
Apparently the biggest Lego Box is the UCS Millennium Falcon I believe which surprises me since the Taj Mahal has more pieces, I mean of depth of the box of course, in the other two categories it is a very small amount larger
The Taj Mahal has a lot of small pieces, such as 1x1x2/3 slope pieces.
+Lorenzo H Yeah that makes since
One half of me wants to watch this video, the other half wants to be surürised when i get my hands on this set in few weeks :)
Omg I was waiting for this so much since the reveal, Love you Sariel!
Btw i live very close to poland ;)
Awesome review as always! Can't wait to get this set!
279 dollars for that! Awesome! I'd give that 5 stars on value, that's an immense amount of pieces!
I want to see the instructions for the lower belt mechanism and for the structural lesson, thank you for the review.
Thank you so much for your review! I'm even more excited now than I was before. *SQUEE*!!!!!!!
This is amazing! It would be lovely if you could actually make the tracks move in opposite directions so the whole thing could turn...
I'm not sure one PF XL motor could handle that.
Well, considering the price of the set, I am pretty sure they could add an extra motor.
I'm not. It's actually dirt cheap for this piece count: you pay 7.1c per piece (in 42056 it's 11.1c per piece).
Evan C 42056 set has 1,200 pieces less and costs actual 300 bucks.
+Evan C And the price per piece rule is $0.10 with exceptions to power functions. The fact that your paying 7 cents for a battery box and 7 cents for an XL motor is unbelievable
i would like to say it looks big enough to even add your own led lighting rig.
+Nicholas Fogelson I can't pick up thimgs because the clutch gears at the motor stop everything. But you can always get rid of them.
Personally, I think this puts me one step closer to finally building a machine powered by a hamster in a treadwheel ;)
cant wait to build it on my own!!!!!!!! so pumped
I think this model looks pretty good. I would give it a 4.
great review i was getting tired just watching the build 550 pages woah
It is not true that it doesn't look like any typical bucket wheel excavator! It's the Sandwik PE100 compact bucket wheel excavator.
hey, I chainsawed my friend with a Bucket Wheel Excavator! 23:00
Already know what I would do with this set when had to buid something else with it; A big tank with buckets used as medieval weapons instead of guns
Thanks for the review. I really enjoyed it.
I wonder what are you doing after review of the lego sets do you deconstruct them and put them in the boxes and store full boxes untouched somwhere or do you just keep it displayed or do you deconstruct them and mix it with all other parts of your sets?
It's slow because it's a bloody great excavator. LEGO geared it down so much to make it more realistic. Besides, it needs enough torque to move itself
29:48 i see what you did on the 'WHO WON'T LIKE THIS SET?' Lololol i mean enviormentalist! 😂 and below!!
the little truck is quite cute
this is my most favorite Lego set
