Very cool video thank you. Love the faces you make when you go wide open throttle. By the way, your garage looks freaking awesome. A proper home for that car!! I currently drive a 2021 Cayenne GTS and I sincerely hope that I have something like yours next to it in the garage soon!
Just had my 991.2 Carrera cabriolet delivered on Saturday and have loved watching all your mod videos! Definitely looking at the different tunes and your experience was great to see. I have had two 991.1’s and the difference already is incredible!
Enjoy!! Yes, I noticed the difference over my previous 991.1 almost immediately during my first drive in this 991.2. It's still the 911 driving experience but it's a different 911 driving experience... I just love it. Can't wait to crank a few extra horses out of it with a few more performance mods. Enjoy yours!! Congratulations!
@@AutoAmateur thank you! How do you like your tune? I was thinking of getting a Cobb (have had them before on one 911 and then my macan gts.) but they have a lawsuit going on and have cut back on the power I think. I am from Chicago but live in Phoenix area now. Car culture is great out here and lots of Porsche people!
@@RobertR-x5p hey Robert! I love it. It's hard to describe just how 'better' the car drives now without sounds like a goofball with a new toy on Christmas day. I'm honestly kicking myself at having this thing sitting on my deck for the best part of year and not installing until now. What I really appreciate about Softronic as well as is the personal service you get. Scott, the owner / operator, is there to help you with any question or concern you have. Email or phone. He's awesome. Plus I've been through it now so you can hit me up too! Get the Softronic, you won't regret it.
For future make sure you have fans blowing air directly into the intercooler inlets just forward of the rear spoiler! Without those you could be down 30-40hp or more.
Great video! I also have a GBM 991.2 base with a SoftTronic tune but equipped with Soul headers + valved (Non PSE) exhaust system. The car sounds insane, I would highly recommend looking into it for your next upgrade! Smiles for miles. The difference in the tune is night and day, enjoy it well man.
Thanks! I have Soul headers, cats and the valved exhaust on the way....! Can't wait to get the whole system installed and see what a difference it makes.
About time....Havent had one of your vids pop up on my youtube for a while...great to see you enjoying the 991.2 so much.looking forward to you getting the spanners out and adding some upgrades ..great vid and hopefully the youtube wizard allows me to see the next instalment..
Tuning def gives you a huge increase in hp and torque, but keep in mind if you tend to keep your cars a long time, engine parts will fail earlier. I put a Stage 1 APR tune on my daily driver Audi A4 bought new, and after the tune (58K miles later), the turbo failed ($5K replacement at dealership). The tune apparently increases boost pressure two times in order to give that extra power so it will fail earlier. I still find the tune was worth it cause of the gains in power and fun factor but keep in mind it will necessitate early replacement of parts.
Yes great point to make. From the research I’ve done it seems to be mostly anecdotal but I think the logic is sound. I plan on upgrading various components right now like diverter valves, intake pipes, etc. But if a turbo blows up, you’re right, not a lot you do about that besides cough up several grand to replace it.
@ Yes, I think it’s inevitable after prolonged use, and remember, the 911 has not one but two turbos, so double the replacement price. 😁 Still worth the fun I think.
Great video as always James! I’m sat at the crossroads with my 991.1 C4S, as much as I adore the car and the noise it makes, I’m ready for a change. I’ve been looking at a delivery milage 992 Carrera T, which I test drive in the UK tomorrow, or the other option is a GTS with about 8k to 15k on the clock and a year or so old. Both are around the same money, with the T benefiting far more from a tune than the GTS would. Decisions! I’m going to take my time and do my homework, before making a decision.
I have to say, as incredible as my NA 991.1 sounded, the PSE on my 991.2 sounds amazing. I get lots of pops and crackles. Lots of personality. Even more now with the tune.
Been waiting for this! I had the APR tune and all the bolt ons on my '17 including the gts turbos. I have a bmc drop in and m engineering tune on my 992 S.
@AutoAmateur it was about 630ish hp at the crank. That was with intercoolers etc. It made a bit more power than my 992 with the tune and drop in. I'm assuming I'll be back at that same power level if not a bit more when I upgrade to csf intercoolers and hiflow cats etc. Right now my 992 is at about 600-615ish I'd guess. I haven't dyno'd just yet.
Get both. I'm not sure I would be so ready to give up a 996 C4S! As much as a I love my 991.2, I still think about my blue 996 I sold to trade in for this.
I have the COBB stage 1 tune, on my Carrera 4S 991.2, It was straightforward to install as there is no need for a laptop, but I am sure the performance gains are similar as stated. Bottom line it worth doing; great fun
You're exactly right! The power gains from the Cobb tune are virtually identical to the Softronic from what I can see, maybe even a little higher. What I really like about the Cobb alternative is the Accessport device itself and in-car usability. That's really cool!!
Well, my good sir….you haven’t uploaded too many videos so I haven’t much opportunity to comment. Same could be said for Curb and Canyon. I need you and Andy to get your shit together and provide me with free entertainment. I mean really guys!!😂. I really want to do TOTD and just any nice back roads. Maybe 2025 will be the year!! I’ve ❤’d some of your IG posts here and there, but tend to stay away from social media EXCEPT FOR RUclips…if it’s even consider social media. Anyway, best looking 991.2!! Love that Bluey Two-ey with the yellow accent!!👌. Some more power on the cheap, a drop. They are moving up in my book.
Why’d you go with this over APR? Great video!!! I just sold my G87 M2 and got myself into a nicely specced 991.2 and currently doing some maintenance and sorting!
To be honest, it was because I was extremely skeptical of the notion of self-installed tunes and their reported gains before this, and also the price point being much more competitive than the APR equivalent was attractive. Plus I have complete faith in Soul Performance having used their products for several years on several different 911s now. If they stand behind it, I am game to try it!
Do you have factory launch control? I had thought that only comes with the Sport Chrono package. (I saw that you had added the sport chrono clock; did you add the sport chrono software too?)
To add 100hp is nice. I hope you understand that more powerful 911 models are having stronger clutch and brakes. Lets wait and see what your clutch will tell you after a few thousand miles :)
Not between the S and GTS models. I’m happy to roll the dice. If I was pushing 700 or 800 hp I would maybe start worrying. I’m about 800 hard miles in since the tune and no issues.
Not apples to apples but I have had an APR tune on my Audi daily commuter car for many years and my turbo failed after about 60K miles. Double the normal boost pressure from the tune will make the part die faster but honestly it’s still worth it to me. Replaced the turbocharger and still enjoy the extra power over stock. Just realize that by increasing the boost to get that added power, the consumables (including the turbos) will fail earlier but it’s all replaceable.
Great video James. Ive got a 991.2 GTS these days (huge step up from my 991.1 S. I also just bought a 2017 Macan Turbo as my daily (what a car!). Im looking at a Race Chip for my Macan as it doesnt interfere with any warrantee claims etc. How do you think it compare to your ECU tune?
I've heard good things about the performance from the Race Chip mod, but I don't understand why it would give you any more or less protection for warranty claims. You're fiddling with the car either way, right?
Hi James- hope you and the family are well. Can you send me the link to the carbon diffuser you mentioned and if it’s possible for UK shipment? As always, if you are UK bound, do Lee me know and we can meet-up F2F at last. Thx, Christopher

I have the Softronic on my 17 Base and love it but I don't think Porsche has a 15-20% power loss. With the engine in the back I don't think there is a lot of drive train loss. I would think you would have maybe around a 12% loss.
For the car alone I would agree but there’s also a margin of error associated with the dyno set/up and how well the car is strapped in, plus environmental factors in the test room like humidity, temperature, air flow. That makes up the total possible percentage of measured loss.
Seems like torque is lower than I would expect. Would be interesting to see what your car does stock on the dyno so you can see the delta because that what really matters. Great video as always and looking forward to your other performance videos
If I were to sell it to a dealer or sell it to the general market via AutoTrader or Cars.com, I would put it back to stock. However there is a large market for modded cars too here in the US. I could sell it as-is for a great price from niche places like PCarMarket.com and other similar marketplaces tailored for the enthusiasts.
Absolutely! In fact, it's a little cheaper than the tune for the 991 and you choose if you want the tune to add crackles / pops to your exhaust sound or simply just add more power. You can get it here from Soul and Softronic: soulpp.com/product/porsche-981-cayman-boxster-softronic-ecu-tune/
Do you mean warranty?? Goooood question!! It's a grey area from all the research I've done and this by no means any form of legal advice, so take this with a huge grain of salt. A dealer COULD void your warranty if they choose to because it could technically be considered a modification. However given most tunes (like Stage 1 tunes) are simply adjusting the timing of the power delivery, it's hard to argue you're doing anything over and above the factory tolerances. The other scenario I've read about it that you can always simply flash the car back to the stock tune if you need to and so there's no issue. Again, NOT legal advice, just some perspectives I've found through experience.
Yes. Don’t roll the dice if you want to preserve the warranty. Although the OEM is required to prove your mod is cause for issues, enough people have had major headaches looking for warranty support.
It's a grey area at best. Ask your dealer or whomever owns/provides your car's warranty, it's basically that simple. I know Porsche owners whose Porsche dealers have categorically told them NO, it won't void their warranty. Others, yes. It's an unfortunate scenario where the best answer is "It depends...".
This is very interesting to me since I have a 17 carrera tuned by APR on its 3rd year since the tune with no issues to speak of!
Outstanding outcome for that tune. Well done!
Thank you!!
