I use OLFA knives at work. Snapping the blade for a fresh tip is super convenient, and swapping blades is super easy too. It’s also nice being able to set the blade length anywhere from the tip just barely sticking out to having a whole fresh blade sticking out the front.

I've been in a lot of factories that have that policy. In fact your not allowed to cary a pocket knife in the plant. Most of them have the plastic box openers at each machine. I purchased the Workpro utility knifes there small they come in a 3 pack for around $17 and fit in your pocket. I carry one everyday now along with my regular pocket knife. I think you would like them it has a button lock and you can flip it open. Thanks Doc

I got one of these a few months ago, not because of job requirements, but just because I wanted a knife to use in my workshop I could grab for a quick cut and set back down without worrying about it. Honestly, I have a lot of much nicer utility knives (Milwaukee, Knipex, Fiskars, Tajima, etc.) but I've probably been using this one the most lately because it's just so convenient.
I bought a similar one on Amazon from a brand called Nova a few years ago, but I immediately returned it. That one took way too much force to extend the blade and it was so much heavier and bulkier. I haven't tried any other squeeze style knives yet, but I still kind of want the Starrett one just because it has a super precise depth adjustment. I don't know why I would ever need that feature, but it seems cool.

As someone who's spent most of my work life with a retractable Stanley Classic box cutter in my pocket all the folding lock backs are too bulky, heavy and inconvenient to use. The plastic Husky maybe lighter but still looks too bulky to have in my pocket all day.
Like most things reinventing the wheel rarely works out well, though I'll admit adding the retractable feature to the Stanley Classic was a good safety feature that did not detract from it's functionality or increase size or mass.

One big benefit is if you drop it, it doesn't cut you on the way down, off a deflection or into toes. Some reasons a lot of jobs require them. The Husky feels pretty great in hand for the price.

I own this knife. It is awful. So is my Fiskars, which retracts the damn blade the instant it contacts the work. ALL auto-retracting knives are awful. I have to own them because my customer is pretty sure that if construction workers are allowed to use standard utility knives, the floors will run red with our ignorant Luddite blood. Accordingly, the customer has mandated these ultimately unsafe, frustrating abominations. And the Husky knife, where it is metal, is zamac. Just like the awful Fiskars and nearly every other utility knife on the market. I have owned the red Stanley model. I gave it away. It functions like the Milwaukee in the video, which I would give away to someone I disliked. You lose a lot of grip stability if your thumb has to ride that button in order to keep the blade extended. "The result of foolproofing the world is to fill the world with fools."

Yeah, I just happen to have one in front of me in my computer key board drawer which now holds knives, flashlights, and such. I got it after a friend raved about his. A good knife, but I found a couple pocket sized ones I liked better. One by Olight, which they call the "Otacle U1 Carbon Fiber Small Folding Tool" at $24.99. For heavier jobs I would go with one of my Milwaukee Fastbacks, Olfa, or Stanley, but my U1 sees a lot more pocket time (2.2oz). If you pull the bar lock or rail lock back, it flips open or closed like the button lock of the Fastback. Faster to deploy and more comfortable in my hand. Highly recommended. Just use your favorite blades. IIRC Project Farm did a review of utility blades.

I've been using utility knives to open boxes 8 hours a day, 6 days a week for about 15 years for various employers. I usually bring my own, but Lowe's made me use their own special one, which was a self retracting safety knife. It was probably the least safe knife I've ever used, barring knives that weren't working as intended. Because of the mechanism they used, it would often open by itself if I was carrying it blade down, which I usually do if I'm throwing it in my pocket or something. It also wouldn't reliably stay open, forcing me to use more force and time per cut, which could have lead to injury.
They say you're more likely to cut yourself on a dull blade than a sharp one, and now I can tell you you're more likely to hurt yourself on a 'smart' design than a dumb one.

on that milwaukee one you don't actually have to hold your thumb in that position, you push it forward and once you get the blade into the material and start cutting the friction holds it out and then once you pull away from the material the blade goes in and keeps you from getting cut if you accidentally had your leg near what you're cutting or something. There is also blades like that one that have settings for how far in or out they go, my old company used to buy these cheap ones that have a tab inside and by default it would only poke out a little but if you needed it to cut deeper you break the tab off inside and it uses more of the blade

i think some people wont like it because you could accidently extend the blade but its unlikely. But I LOVE that stanley pro because of the handle shape and the fixed blade, I hope that cover is loose enough so that you can flip it open or closed. People love the Milwaukee fastback for the flip open but i think its stupid and dangerous (which im right about ive seen so many dudes cut themselves with it, any knife nerd knows they cut themselves the most with loose hinge blades such as balisongs and flip points). With that stanley you can have the quick, convenient, and fun flip open cover with the durability of a fixed point and more safety then the fast back.
I also really like the husky but i agree that release button sticks out WAAAAAAAY to far, i bet it was an ease of manufacturing thing. Super cool innovations.

Used a different brand of the Husky version at Walmart. They were trash and always fell apart inside within a few months. Too many mechanisms. But the company gave them to us for free, so when they'd break, we'd get more. My current job uses a variant of the retractable Stanely (no sure which brand, but all steel). They've lasted over a year, but only because cheap screws fall out and get lost. It's not Stanley.

Love the concept. Needs refinement. For the reason you mentioned but also it needs to be more trim in hand like the Milwaukee on the table. And yes my job requires self retracting utility knives. The dumb thing is you need to use more force in grip and thumb pressure. So if you slip, its more dangerous. But the people that make the rules, don’t actually use the tools.

I could easily pull the blade out prematurely from simply using a lot of force when trying to cut something. Then on top of the fact that the blade pulled out, the blade was lodged halfway into the material that I was attempting to cut and without something like another pliers I could not safely remove the blade without possibly cutting myself.

i think my cheap as fuck canadian tire mastercraft brand has not the best build quality but has the best design. you can slide out as many blade seqments as you want, lock it , snap extra segments off. and its cheap .

If you want to see if the mystery metal is magnesium….. poor a drop of vinegar on to an exposed bit and if so it bubbles. And e.a. Aluminum won’t.

Damn these safety knives are so nice compared to the piece of shit I was given at my last job. The lil fucker had a side trigger to unlock the safety cap on the blade which was tolerable even though the button was a terrible location, what made it a pain in the ass is that the cover would spring back up and reset the lock the moment tension was eased off of it. Meaning you needed to time the disengage the moment your about to make a cut. Its a damn shame a pallet dropped on it and I had to use just the blade for the rest of the day.

The one area I would like to see explored with utility knives is the angle relationship between the blade and handle. What if the blade was at, say, a 45 degree angle to the handle. Or could be adjusted like a compound miter saw. Just thinking out loud.

I like the looks of that Fiskars folding knife, except that it doesn't have any extra blade storage. I don't find my Milwaukee fastback knife very comfortable when doing a bunch of drywall cuts, but at least it has blade storage.

CAT also makes a very nice auto retracting squeeze type knife, easy one-handed deployment. and you can lock it closed, or lock it open. my favorite dedicated utility knife, second-favorite utility knife overall behind only the Milwaukee that has the screwdriver/nutdriver on the back

I use something similar to that all day at work. I have probably 20 of them just in my car. I’ve wanted a nicer one but a free blade refills at work, nothing beats it. EasyCut 2000N

I've been working construction my whole life and them knives with short, loose blades suck. The more exposed the blade, the more effective it is. I always keep a Fastback in my pocket for the bitdriver and practicality, but if I need to do heavier work like hanging drywall, I get my old school Orcon fixed blade utility knife I keep in my truck. I put a high viz orange kydex sheath on it so it's easier to find. I've seen Lowe's employees always carrying these push out blades probably for safety reasons

I was in Home Depot and stumbled upon the auto reload husky utility knife. I was just looking for a cheap knife to use as a backup just in case I lose my dewault. Later figured out it had the auto reload feature, for as cheap as it is it’s a really good piece of kit. It’s model number 00043, check it out if you get a chance.
