This is not viable for an urban environment. You can't be having a fixed blade horizontal carry while wearing business formal or business casual in an office environment. Neither is it viable for most, if not all customer facing jobs, whether you're in an office or not. This arguably makes it a non-viable edc option for the majority of people who live in cities.

You actually said it… fix blades are just not appropriate in most settings. Knives are really not accepted socially. The vast majority of us do not live on a homestead, we spend our time in work offices and living in cities. Some of us even have to wear suits daily. A folding life can be used by all as it’s discreet. A fix blade is not. You even called the one “spooky”. That’s not something I can take to work. If I’m going camping or hiking, that’s different, but for urban environments, nothing beats a folder.

I used to be a big folder guy too up until a few years ago.
Being an avid outdoorsman, fixed blades are just so much more superior, for everything. I like a blade about 4" or so for a "do everything" kind of knife. I've found when doing food prep in the field, (cutting fruit/vegetables, dressing game) the longer blade is much appreciated. But its still small enough to not frighten certain people in public and do fine tasks. They're easier to clean, they don't have lots of small parts that need maintenance, they're more comfortable when carving, and they're faster to get to in a hurry. They just work better.
Bark River and Benchmade are my go-to adventure blades.

Perhaps it's more common in my neck of the woods, but a lot of fellas seem to carry overly large bowie knives hanging from their belts, common enough that public spaces that normally would balk at such things have turned a blind eye to the practice. Much like you, I find it slightly distasteful as well.
I've never considered a horizontal carry for a fixed blade, finding comfort in a folding automatic clipped inside my pocket. You raise valid points as ever, a fixed blade would be ideal; I prefer a knife in my hand and able to be used as quickly as possible- hence my preference for automatic knives, being able to be deployed on the draw- but a fixed blade is the natural pinnacle of such an idea. Great video as ever, Cody, blessings to you and yours.

I have been an advocate of the horizontal or “scout” carry on everything from a multi tool to a hunting knife for as long as I can remember. Alway either had my sheaths custom made, or would modify or make them myself. Why anyone would want something sticking up 5 or so inches in your ribs, and the equivalent into your leg or back side is beyond me. Glad you figured it out! That being said, I will never give up my 940. There are places where fixed blade carry is just not acceptable. And when you want to show off just a bit, there is nobody that knows anything about knives, that doesn’t recognize that beautiful Purple Ti Spacer 😉.

I bought the "Osborne 940", after looking/watching, a million articles/videos. Iconic, classic, and good looking, no less. BUT, after my purchase, i was instantly dissapointed. Not only is it over priced, its over hyped, in my opinion. Decent materials, but so are tons of other manufacturers. Its just extremely, underwhelming, and somewhat perplexing, just what the "big deal" is. Ive got tons of blades, from a million other manufacturers, that ive never had this buyers remorse feeling, as i do with the "Benchmade Osborne". Its relegated to the drawer, because of the ridiculous price, generic features, and im afraid to use it, mess it up. Im almost certain, ill gift it to someone, who needs a blade. Put a Mora, an SRK, CRKT Biwa in it, just have to see what works for you, and the fixed blade just blends in. Can carry a bunch of EDC stuff as well as your wallet in it. Horizontal carry at about 1 o'clock, handle is over my right pocket next to my phone holster. Phone case keeps my shirt from covering the knife so I'm not "concealed" nobody notices it. You still keep a separate folder for EDC tasks.

If I had to wear a suit then it would be a no go unless I wore it scout carry style. Under regular clothes it works great. It is much faster to deploy if a person needed it for self defense and it has no chance of folding over your fingers like a folder could if a hinge or lock fails. Much more durable and robust knife as well.

I’ve considered a fixed blade but the ease and practicality of a replaceable folding box cutter blade is my go to. I hardly use it, and have the high style pockets on my jeans rather than the slant cut you have, so I never lose it due to the clip. So the small razor blade is good enough and don’t have to create a new routine of sharpening every week, just change the blade when it won’t cut.
