    Addendum: The Klein actually DOES lock in the halfway open position. I did not realize that because in normal operation (flipping it out) it flips right past the halfway lock. But upon further usage I discovered that it does actually lock in that position giving it one feature that the other drivers do not have (unless you count the Lenox's strong detent in that position.)

      Lenox does have one that does have a proper ¼” bit driver that is centered, and also holds 2 spare blades in the back. Had it for years. It’s thiccc tho and the fastback feels way better.

    Milwaukee 6in1 Fastback is my favorite. Milwaukee has now replaced the wire retention ring in the 1/4" bit holder with a ball bearing type retainer. Spec ops makes a utility knife that's really thick, 2 blade storage, no driver but has a window/skull crusher point on the butt end that is just an extension of the aluminum body, not carbide or tungsten. I've carried the Spec ops quite a bit along with a small keychain prytool. But i always come back using the Milwaukee. i put a serrated blade in the Milwaukee for cutting cordage. Thank you for the review.

    I'm a Facilities maintenance worker, I EDC a 6 in 1 Fastback 24/7,(Swiss Champ, Knipex 5" Cobra & Pliers wrench, Kline 1/4 -3/16 flip bit & 8' tape measure) keep one in my personal truck and one in my work van. I don't see anything in the others to change that. I take the pocket clips off immediately and use Ti coated blades to prevent rust, especially in the summer when I'm landscaping 3 to 4 days a week at 19 locations around the county. Regular utility blades rust fast when drenched in sweat.

    Thanks for posting, Nick!
    The Hart bit storage holders look like copies of Gerbers bit holders on their earlier knives... Gerber chose a brittle plastic that would break readily.
    The Klein shorter bit holder looks like it allows for 2" bits to be used with the system, like magnetic nut drivers. That's a nice feature.

    • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  11 месяцев назад +1

      I can confirm that the Klein works better by taking out the bit holder and running a 2" bit. Less slop and still long enough to easily open. None of the nut drivers that I have will fit unfortunately. But it looks like one could do it if the driver were short enough. The width could be accommodated by the cutout for the finger pull. I think I will likely shoot a followup to this video in a few weeks.
      Thanks for your comment!

    The Lennox knife used to be my favorite for a long time. That was until I got a job where I needed one with a screwdriver. So I started my search and ended up with the Toughbuilt one. It is heavy and a little big but functionality wise it's the best. Because of its size and weight and the rectangular shaped handle it works very well as a screwdriver. The Phillips bit is also very good. Because of this you get a lot of torque for driving fastners. Even more than a regular screwdriver.

    • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  11 месяцев назад +3

      I have been using the Lenox again this week. I have to say, it’s the most well built. If I were doing lots of heavy cutting, I would grab that one out of all of these.

    Great run down! I'm a welder/mouldmaker and I daily the fastback. It's not perfect but it's fast and effective. That Toughbuilt looks really, really enticing, though!
    The Hart and Milwaukee are owned by the same company, TTI. I would not be surprised if they were made in the same factory.

    • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  3 месяца назад

      As I understand it TTI acquired Hart to sort of beef up their selection of hand tools. I am a shareholder and that was what they said back when they made the acquisition. But it seems like they pivoted from that to simply offer an entire line of tools for homeowners. I'm not sure about the production. I know Milwaukee does some manufacturing in Germany, and Mexico as well as China and Vietnam. But I am pretty sure Hart is only produced in China. Not sure if that means anything.
      I personally could care less about where a tool is made if it is good. And the fastback is good. Thanks for the comment!

  • @homelee665

    I was going to mention that Milwaukee and Hart are part of the same company. TTI bought them a few years back and decided to use them for their Wal-Mart exclusive line. • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  11 месяцев назад +1

      Right on man. Yeah, I sort of judged Hart by their power tools so I didn’t look on them as being desirable. But upon researching, it looks like TTI acquired them to flesh out their hand tool offerings. So it makes sense that Hart would have decent hand tools. Thanks for the comment.

      Yeah, I know TTI acquired heart a few years ago to fill out their hand-tool line. But just because the same conglomerate owns multiple brands, doesn't mean the brands are the same. Different companies with different engineers and designers using different materials to different tolerances, manufactured in different places (most typically). Half the power tools at HD are TTI, but they are still different brands whose differences are more than the color of plastic. Although, sometimes you do find some that are just a rebrand of the same product. Thats always funny. Red must be an expensive color! 🤣

      Affirmative. Standard 2" bits fit just fine, with a little room to spare. And there is slightly less wobble when ran that way. The included bit holder seems to have very poor tolerances and accounts for much of the looseness. Also my JIS bits fit even tighter than standard American 2" bits.

    I carry the Milwaukee 6 and 1 fastback for quite some time and the only gripe ever had with it was when you would shut it. The utility knife blade would slam into the bit holder in the back because there is a gap where the blade can go through and the very back of the knife and then you would have a dull spot on your blade. So then I went to the Milwaukee compact fastback

      @NickDoesThings-  11 месяцев назад

      huh! I haven't heard that one yet. I am looking at mine right now and I can see how that would be a possibility. However, mine looks like there is plenty of clearance between the bit holder and the blade. Perhaps after it wears out a bit that starts to happen. Did this happen on multiple of yours? Or could you possibly have had a defective one? Also, apparently there are a few generations of these. Do you happen to know what gen you were carrying? Maybe its something they fixed?

For me, 90% of what I use my multitool for is cutting, screwdriver, and bottle opener of course. So I rarely feel I am missing out with the fastback. All depends on what you do from day to day. Cheers!

    Im a commercial drywaller and razor knifes are my main method of cutting to i feel like i can add some good insight after my hundreds of thousands of cuts with these things. No these aren’t my go to for most jobs, i use full sized razors mostly of the time. But there is always one of these in my pocket and they get used a lot when im doing smaller work or repairs so they get a lot of use still. The fast back was my best friend for years, nothing was even close. Until i got the klein. Its honestly pretty similar but i love the the driver design better but the main thing for me was the way it locks at an angle because that is crucial for a job like mine to not wear my wrist out on all these cuts. Definitely dethroned the fast back in my book

    • @NickDoesThings-

      @@jimboneutron8399 thanks for weighing in! That is definitely a good argument for the Klein. I regret that I didn’t include that locking feature in my original post. I just didn’t know about it at that time. I pinned it in the top comment but more should have been said.
      Personally I don’t get the bit holder thing. I think the whole setup is a bit too fidgety. And anytime I have my driver I always have all my bits in the same case as the driver so I’m never at a place where I need a little bit holder. That said, a feature is a feature and if it is useful to someone then that settles it. Personally don’t think the trade off with the mechanical slop is worth it. I use my knife as a hand driver mostly and the slop made it a worse experience than the well designed driver in the fast back.
      I’m thinking about another video to compliment this one on full sized razors. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      @ i don’t remember the brand but in the flooring section of home depot they have one with a fat roundish handle and a curved design. For what i do thats the best option for full size.
      Your argument about the bit is completely valid. I just like it because i have an extra screw gun bit on me at all times and i use a screw gun all day long and they do get lost. If im actually driving a screw with my knife i take the driver bit off and put it in the short driver. I do it for outlet covers and stuff like that.
      Edit: its called Big Fatso Multipurpose Utility Knife at Home Depot. Literally the most comfortable knife to use for a job that has heavy razor use like drywall. Its in the flooring section so no one thinks of it.

    Cool comparison! Like you, I use a utility knife constantly at work. Cutting boxes, pallet strapping, plastic wrap, burlap, etc. I edc the fastback, but we’ve got a bunch of random ones laying around at all times. The Lenox gold and a similar husky version, an old fixed blade Stanley, and an assortment of cheap Amazon ones. The Milwaukee is a dream. I’m constantly taking it in and out of my pocket and it’s just super quick and handy. I also use the driver a good bit and it’s perfectly adequate-I actually tend to one hand close it as well. I’ve really strongly considered getting the toughbuilt as I have some other stuff from them I really like. I think it’s just a bit too big for me to enjoy carrying, but seeing your comparison makes me want to go grab one to throw in the home tool bag or just have laying around. Thanks man!

    I want to say thank you for this. If I wouldn't have seen this I would have just jumped on this Klein blade. Not because of brand loyalty because it's orange AND a good brand name. However I would have been upset with that quality especially since my daily is the same Fastback you have in the video. I tried a similar style Husky brand without a driver. It was poorly weighted where the handle was too light and upon flipping open you could feel the knife wanting to jump out of your hand. Anyway I appreciate you saving me the money of finding out the Klein is trash as I'm the guy who would go I could use that extension for my drill I use my bit out of my Fastback in my drill all the time.

      Right on man! I’m glad I could help you decide. Unfortunately I DID jump on the Klein. I figured since they were so closely copying the fastback, that they just have improved it in some way. But sadly they did not. That said, if you regularly use the bit from your fastback in your drill then you probably would find the Klein bit holder useful. Also you can remove the bit holder all together and put in a two inch bit like we all use in our drills. For me, when I use the driver in my edc it is because I don’t have my drill handy, so the bit holder doesn’t make sense for my usage. Also I prefer to have the double sided bit like the fastback and toughbuilt. Thanks for the comment!

    That is the one thing I have never understood about bit holders I like the one on the Klein tools utility knife. that advertise they take one inch insert bits and also accommodate 2-in bits. Why does the bit holder only cover up until halfway of the retention indent meant for impact drivers ball retention. because they are made to only cover up until the retention indent you have all that wobble and slop. 1 in bits should be one and a third inch or however long it is until the bit gets past the indent and squares off above the indent for better 2 inch bit retention. My other complaint is why is it quarter inch and not a 9/32 bit or 5/16 bit. But that is a rant for another day.

    I'm a Lowe's guy and a bit of a Klein fanboy so I picked up the same Klein one the other day and have been EDCing it. My housemate has the Milwaukee and I hate to admit it but it's definitely the better design, I wish I had a flathead instead of the removable adapter (particularly weird when you think about how common flatheads are in Klein's bread and butter electrical market) and, while the 45 degree lock is cool in theory, I find it kinda hard to reliably flick past it into the full straight position. The bottle opener and blade storage would've been nice too.

      TTI is not a Chinese company, although much of its manufacturing is done in China. It owns Hart, Milwaukee, Rigid, Ryobi, and several other brands. However, just because they are owned by the same conglomerate does not mean they are the same company. The companies have nothing to do with each other outside of IPO. TTI acquired Hart, a few years ago for their line of hand tools before their deal with Walmart happened.

    I bought the Milwaukee based on all the reviews, but I was about to try and return it because I thought something was wrong with the blade holder, because it did not hold the blade tightly... I was watching your video and some others though, and it looks like yours is lose too... Is this normal for Utility knives these days? The ones I had 20 or more years ago were rock solid. Even the tiny folding Gerber(I think) one held the blade nice and tight... But all the ones you showed seemed to allow the blade to move when it was locked in... Weirdly enough the Hart seemed to hold the blade the best, but as it was not something that you actually deliberately showed, it is very hard to tell...

      Great observation skills, my friend! To answer your question, it depends. I have found that some brands of blades have tighter fits on different knives. However, I just on several of the knives I have and found that all of them have some slop in the connection, even my non-flipping knives.
      I suspect that it is probably more common to see this than to see a totally fixed blade these days.
      I will say that this does not create a an issue for me, at least in the way I use the knife. However, it does mean that I take extra care to make sure that the blade actually clicked into its proper place.

    • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  11 месяцев назад

      Thats a great question. Unfortunately I don't have one to try out. I think, because it is flat, having a strong magnet would be important. The fastback uses a retention device so it doesn't have a strong mag. If you take the bit driver out of the Klein and use your bit insert in ints place, you would have a bag but it is pretty shallow. The Toughbuilt doesn't have a very strong mag, however, the insert goes down much deeper than the other drivers so It would probably give the most surface area contact for your flat insert. I would say Klean, or Toughbuilt. I wish I could say more but that is just a guess.

    one thing about the hart, i like nearly nothing about the design, other than 4 bits. i think 2 flat and 2 philips is a waste, that knife would probably be a hell of a lot better with just 1 #2 phillips, 1/4" flat, and on the other side a t-20 and t-25. they are much more needed in a pinch than a SECOND phillips ever is.

I have not looked into the specifics but I noticed that Lowes pulled way way back on their Toughbuilt offerings in 2024. I haver even seen Toughbuilt oddly show up in Harbor Freight...wild! I don't know what is happening there.
      You can still find it online id different places under different names. Google "Toughbuilt Electricians 5 in 1." Maybe tag "pry bar" and "folding knife" in the search. You should find it that way.

    Where did you find the toughbuilt one?

    Milwaukee has the best design for now, but their bit holder is the weak point and the bits are proprietary. Klein is a close second, but the pocket clip catches on seats, you don't get a two sided bit, and no bottle opener. (I do like the impact driver because sometimes my drill might be missing one and I can just borrow it from the knife in my pocket.)

      Do you think the bit holder on the Milwaukee is the weak point because of the fact that the bits are proprietary? Or is there another reason you don't like the bit holder?
      I used to have a fastback that did not have a ball detent. But the one I cary now does have a ball. Therefore it has no problem accepting different bits. Although, I haven't tried any other double sided bits because I don't have any. But I suspect it would work just fine for them.

      @@NickDoesThings- I've had the screw that keeps the bit holder there come out, I've had the old-style internal band fall out and lost the bit, and the new-style external band came off on the first day with my newest one. It just isn't a good design and the fact that no ordinary bits fit it is a hassle too.

      @@NathanBake Dang bro, you have had some bad luck with these things! Or maybe I have just had good luck! I have not experienced failure. I have had multiple, not because they have malfunctioned, but because I lost them, then found them again after I purchased a replacement. There is definitely room for improvement thought. I personally would like to see the pivot point be bulked up, I am always nervous I am going to break it.

    The klein's blade will lock in different positions, and the klein gives you an extension to reach screaws and bolt heads that are in tight places the others cannot reach !!!
    My little short stubby scredrivers hardly ever get used... same concept with the shoet tiny drivers on most of these knives...
    If the screw is in a spot you need 2-3 inches of reach , these other knives just will not reach on their own.

    I am a milwaukee fanboy but the only thing I like about the klein is how you can lock the blade at 45 degrees I guess you would say.

      That is a nice feature. For some stupid reason, when I shot this video I did not realize that. I had just been flicking it open so I didn't catch it. I pinned a comment about it when I discovered it. It is a useful feature of the Klein for sure!

    Do you have a favorite brand of utility blades?

    • @NickDoesThings-
      @NickDoesThings-  3 месяца назад

      nnnnnot really. @ProjectFarm did a comparison from which I believe Milwaukee came out on top (If I remember correctly). But my take away from the comparison is that the Stanley blades perform really well for the money. So that's what I use. TBH I change blades constantly. I'm not one of those guys who uses a blade until its no longer a blade but rather a sliver of metal...lol. As soon as I sense some dulling I swap. So I can't speak with much authority on how long a given blade will retain its edge.

    I prefer Milwaukee's fast back, full knife blade with the folding screw driver. Not a fan of the utility blade for my job.

      ooof! forget that! I am not sure why, but for some reason the price on those knives fluctuates all over the place. But just go grab one at Home Depot or Ace Hardware. I never see them for over $16. The one that is in this video came in a 2 pack for $20 on a deal.

      Sure thing man! You can just google “Toughbuilt 5-in-1 electricians utility knife” and you should pull it up easily. Although it looks as like it may only be available at Lowe’s.
