Im a plasterer and i use Lennox blades for mostly cutting mesh tape and blown out boxes. They just seem to last longer for me. I have yet to find a utility blade that doesn't chip when it hits a drywall screw.
You keep hanging it and ill cover it up.

I didn't think there was any significant difference in these, but after watching your vid, I see that there is. I went out and bought a huge pack of DeWalt blades. WOW - those things are durable!! Been using them for a drywall job, and I'm amazed how long they are lasting. Thanks so much for this one.

I'm not sure why I watched this video, but I guess its because it's project farm. I still have about 30 blades left from the cheap blades that came with my blade handles. 30 blades last me 2 years...lol. Yep, I am addicted to this channel.
@@JKinLVN I use a lot of blades because in the work I do with utility knives I cut a lot of corrugated cardboard. I was interested in the economics of whether a more expensive blade may actually save me money.
It's certainly not a life changing expense...so I guess I am just addicted to this channel also. 😁

I definitely appreciate the effort of his testing different thing, and his dedication to funding everything himself and being open with his results, now if the rest of the consumers of products followed his lead, the marketers of higher priced inferior products would have to make a choice... either put up, or shut up then shut their doors for good!
@@jacobwinters2593 You'd think that these companies would have quality control standards to make each batch of blades similar in quality and hardness. I'd call his data about as statistically significant as you can get without wasting hundreds of dollars to get a lower significance level. I'd probably avoid buying a certain brand if I knew they had poor enough quality control to warrant larger sample sizes in a test like this anyways.

2:02 The Milwaukee says it has "carbides dispersed in a steel matrix" which is literally a description of high carbon steel, it's interesting how brands will use technical jargon to convince you that their product is somehow superior or better engineered
You'd hope that they mean carbides other than iron (cementite). But even that hope isn't much, as that again describes most alloys (e.g. Cr-V).

@@T3sl4 In some cases certain types of carbides can do more harm than good if they are too large too. I've found a lot of cheap stainless steel won't hold an edge or even take a decent edge because the chromium/carbides are so coarse they chip out and leave a rough edge, or at least that is my understanding of what's happening at a microscopic level
You also have to think of heat treat. A steel can have perfectly adequate chemistry, but have a suboptimal heat treatment. This can cause many problems, including the issues you described. Chromium carbides are only one possible carbide, you also have vanadium, tungsten...none of them worth anything if the steel has a junk heat treatment!
As for utility blades...I have a 100 pack of the husky. They do the job. You can always sharpen them if you really want to get your money's worth!

@@TheBrewjo it's a separate purchase and good luck getting the door panel off without breaking all the fastener clips. We make sure to engineer them as single use, which can only be sources from the dealer at a cost of $15 each

A friend of mine got me a dewalt utility knife he found on clearance. I was amazed how durable the blades that came with it held up and stayed sharp. I would buy them again.

I agree, PF is a top notch channel, and honestly, I can't understand how he doesn't have ~5 million subscribers like a lot of these other channels. MinutePhysics - 4.84 million, ChrisFix - 5.4 million, SmarterEveryDay - 7.47 million, EngineeringExplained - 2.47 million. These are some of my favorites and Project Farm is easily on their level as far as providing good information and even more involved with his subscribers. We need to all help boost his subs!

I tried these the other day. Tbh, as far as "sharpness" goes, they were not as good as much cheaper brands, however they are definitely more durable.

I have to say if you buy in bulk you SEVERELY drop the cost per blade though. I love the Irwin blades, and buy them in packs of 100...which ends up costing about 6-7 cents per blade.

Duwalt is better than Irwin. Irwin sucks. I wouldn’t care if I got them for 6 or 7 cents. I’d chuck them in the trash. Duwalt you can buy in bulk too, it’s a little more expensive but from my experience (I’m a contractor) you also won’t be changing them as often.
The real cost of the blades is walking around trying to find where the hell you have all your spare blades.
The blade is unbreakable and the cutting edge holds up. The value pack is the way to go

I would love to see a test like this for break-away boxcutter blades, because at least in Norway that seems to be the most popular. I've always used original Olfa Ultra-Sharp/Excel Black blades, but it would be great to see what other brands can do!

This test is absolutely accurate. I am constantly using blades at work from cutting jackets and sheathing off of copper or fiber optic cables, to sharpening carpenter pencils. I have probably used every blade out there, I can honestly say that I have stuck with the new DeWalt Carbide due to me not having to change it out as often. I was impressed with the Milwaukee at first but I noticed the chipped edges came up a lot. Watching this video I was able to make accurate calls on which blades were going to outperform others and this test was spot on lol.

Think a blade can get to sharp and have no longevity to it i find the same if i sharpen my chisels to much they go dull quicker
I have a 100 pack of Milwaukee blades in my desk at work and I can't wait until I use them all up...the edges roll over and chip easier than any blades I've used before. I'll have to try some of the DeWalt carbide blades at some point.
Carpet install folks use Orcon trimmer blades.. 👍
They can be resharpened but No one ever would because they are so cheap.
I've been paying extra because I thought I was getting the best for almost a year at this point, I was paying even more mark-up just to buy them on Amazon at just over $1 a blade 🤡 I'll start getting DeWalt blades going forward

If you get the cheapest blades, you can swap them out faster and have a sharper blade at all times. In this test, cheap is the winner.
DeWalt it's okay for drywall I can cut like 30 sheets from each side of the blade ...
@@vipahman I think it really comes down to how much your using your blade. If you just have it around for once in a while type of thing then yea cheapest is best swap a new one out every time. If you have hundreds of feet of material to cut in a day then swapping a dull blade out every 2 minutes is going to be really irritating and you would rather have the 5x more costly blade that lasted longer.
That final test really shows it, the dull Dewalt is almost as sharp as the last place of the brand new blades. I'm gonna stick with Irwin personally, they rate right in the middle of the pack which is fine and they are incredibly cheap when you buy the 100 pack.
I really have a lot of respect for this guy and the channel as a whole! Thanks for the help selecting the best product in every category!

This was such a great video!!! I buy the dewalt carbide blades because even though they are expensive I felt that they always lasted longer than cheaper blades. It’s also nice to know that Stanley and Irwin brands are worthy replacements
Stanley owns both i believe so thats why they are comparable. I know they own dewalt.

I also buy the dewalt carbide razors. They last a lot longer for cutting Sheetrock but it is you get what you pay for.
The irwin bi-metal are great blades and cheaper then the dewalt carbide.
So not even a minute in and I can already tell this is going to be a good comparison, the fact Project Farm has decided to use an actual sharpness tester instead of just newspaper really says how much effort he's put into the video straight away. All newspaper is good for testing is whether or not the edge is the right angle for cutting newspaper, once a blade gets used, that "perfect" edge starts getting lost and cutting paper doesn't give the information you actually want.

great idea but the opposite is also applicable for example on this week is going above 45 degrees celcius (113f) so i would like a test for keeping ice water cold

@@dominicbeltz9057 It seems that the Tervis (plastic) is great at keeping things cold in the summer but fails miserably in the winter. A cheap stainless one from Walmart keeps my tea quite warm even after sitting in a cold truck for hours.
That's actually a cool suggestion. Especially considering the big spread in how much those mugs/cups cost. Some require a loan shark and a kidney function check for collateral.
It was great to cover different applications and best blades for each. For breaking down cardboard boxes, i use a 4in micro serrated knife. Kind of like a file or rasp on each side of the blade.

Speaking of which, I have a bad story. When I was young I would ne mowing the yard. It would be toad season and there would be thousands of baby toads hoping around. I would pick one up and send it for a ride though the engine. I would remove the filler and stick them in the intake. Then I would see a few sparks shoot out the exhaust and with little toad legs v etc. It was awesome and a bit cruel. But done in the name of science. Would love to see that with the clear cylinder head.

I've changed a few items or looked for ones I've seen tested. Makes a difference
I had to rewatch this one after I bought a Milwaukee utility knife and the blade it came with it cut up boxes much easier than the Stanley blades in a DeWalt knife I usually use. At home I mostly use them for boxes. At work it is a lot of plastic stretch wrap and banding. Not sure how hard that is on a blade, but the wrap is much easier with a fresh and sharp one. I'll probably get some of the MIlwaukee blades once I use up what I now have and see if I remain happy with them. I'm ok with changing blades more often in exchange for sheer effectiveness.

I love this. Great test designs. The only thing I'd like to ask for, if feasible, is to test a statistically significant sample of each blade model for the initial sharpness test; maybe ten pieces each. This would lend a lot more credibility to the results, because we'd understand how much variation there is from one blade to the next with the same model (at least within the same pack of blades). I do understand the cost and time impact of this request. I work as an automotive engineer for one of the big three, and making sure that the results we get our of our tests are meaningful is critical to our work. Again though, great test. Love it. I'll be donating to the patreon account (can't ask for something like this and not put my money up).

@@ProjectFarm it seems that at the very least, repeat the no-wear/non- destruct test for the "best" outlier. If a new "best", then rinse & repeat. If it looks like a particular test markedly distinguishes the best candidate for an objective feature, this may also be worthy of a repeat.

I appreciate you greatly for testing on copper because I'm a scrapper so that's my most common use for utility knives. I strip #1 wires all the time because it doubles or even triples the scrap value

It was literally yesterday that I was replacing the blades in my utility knife after chopping up a bunch of cardboard, when I thought to myself "that Project Farm channel should do a video on the best utility blades." Funny how that works.

If you really want a good cut through cardboard try an electric knife with serrated blades. Runs through it like hot knife through butter. I have been doing this for 2 years.

as usual an informative and useful video. I'm curious if you had a way to just have the tip of the blade (that was exposed to the brunt of the abuse) fixed when using the tester and if there was a method to keep where on the blade each blade was tested consistent?

That's why I use a folding box blade with a clip, and put right back in my front pocket soon as I'm finished with it.

They stuff the blades into the blister pack in a warehouse in Detroit.
"Made in the US with global materials" is marketing speak for "Chinese blades packaged by a machine contracted out by a half dozen companies".

it probably means cutting & grinding from sheet metal was done on US soil.
That is not how I'd interpret it. As far as the source of steels, India would have close to the same probability as China as being the source. Where we have to worry is when implanted medical hardware is not tracked well from the source.
@@davidk7544 Well China has the biggest usable iron ore productions and it is pretty well know that Japan and the US are big customers.
I work at General Motors, almost every part and product is imported from China/Mexico/Canada. It's just "assembled in the USA" which means they can claim it's made in the USA.

This is a great comparison. Very useful. What I've found is that there's also a great variety of durability among the utility knives themselves, not just the blades. I have one folding knife that's great for opening Amazon boxes, but almost loses the blade whenever it's stressed, while my DeWALT handle keeps a firm grip on the blade no matter the job and is much less tiring to use (though the form is less convenient to carry around in my pocket). A comparison of utility knives would be extremely useful - apologies if you've done one already, I just could not find it.
