In My opinion: Volume 1 Summer (good, innocent times) Volume 2 Fall (a storm is coming) Volume 3 Winter (the SHTF!) Volume 4 Spring (the girls recover from the tragedy)
i think that its a good theory but i dont think it is going to be that way past maybe season 5 but i dought even that far. it limits there story telling too much. i think its just a theory that happends to line up with natural progression of a new seasonal storyline. i am sure you could apply this theory to most episodic shows that have to build a world to then tell a story in.
EruptionFang I actually made a theory quite close to yours. It's that each member of team RWBY reflect one of the seasons in some way. Ruby, obviously, is Summer. She is daughter of the Summer Maiden and she is carefree and fun, like summer. Weiss is winter. She is cold, her colour scheme is pretty much all white, and her semblance is ice. Blake is spring. This one was a little harder since she was so dark and distance, unlike spring. But, spring is a time for new beginnings. Blake wants to have a new start and move on from he White Fang, to begin again. Yang, is fall. Her semblance is associated with fire, like the fire-like colours of fall leaves. Her life can also refect this as well. She started out fun and happy, like fall. But the things quickly turned bad after she lost her arm, again, like fall. So in short, team RWBY could be some sort of representation of the Seasonal Maidens.

I should also point out that his semblance isn't "his aura," it's "Aura Amplification." If need be, here is a description of what it does. Jaune is able to amplify a person's aura, the culmination of a person's being and semblance. In doing so, the person who is amplified is twice, if not 10x as powerful, and can take more hits. They can also heal their wounds faster than normal. An example of this is the fight that Weiss had almost been taken out in. Jaune was able to heal a near dead Weiss. After she stood back up, Weiss was able to summon a Queen Lancer, a terribly powerful Grimm that is more powerful than her iconic knight. She was able to summon this immediately, thanks to Jaune when compared to before the battle, where she struggled to summon the knight versus Vernal.

This makes complete sense. It wouldn't surprise me that this is the case especially considering CRWBY have been writing the story many volumes in advance as far as volume 5 iirc.
I think the 9 volumes was more in terms of how far they intend of having RWBY go rather than how far ahead they've written the story outline. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if at this point in time, they have planned things out that far ahead compared to when I first heard about how far in advance they'd written the story.
Well if this theory is right, you could combine it with the stuff about the first 3 volumes being a season and therefore assume its a 4 season show with 12 volumes which would cycle the seasons 3 times.

+Tyler Nelson I was thinking of a big twist, such as the seasons themselves being put out of balance or order. Something crazy like the RWBY girls (or whoever) becoming the "wrong" (non-ideal) maidens and that causing the world to go out of balance. Then they can re-arrange the tones.
You have to remember that the seasons are not all the same, like they said of the maidens. Summer can bring heat waves and drought, both are damaging, like the flip side of the coin of winter.
(Spoilers for Volume 5) It seems so far that Volume 5 is indeed becoming spring. New beginnings, refreshment. The teams are coming back together, (BIG SPOILER) Professor Ozpin is back with Oscar, and the characters all seem to be ok-ish. They'll have to deal with all the crap leftover from previous volumes, what with Salem and Cinder and all that, but they're recovering. They're starting over.
Volume 3 introduced the fall maiden and volume 5 introduced the spring maiden. Next will probably be the winter maiden in volume 8 since it would be too soon to introduce a new maiden in the upcoming volume 6

You Really are spot on with many points!!! Vol1 takes place mostly at the beginning of a new school Year. The Show RWBY, has many influences to Japanese anime; and, In Japan, they follow a Year-Long school system that begins in the Spring. Vol1 does the Same. Vol2 begins the End of a Break, with a couple of months to pass. This "Break" being their "Summer" Break. Finally, Vol3 needs no in-dept guess at where it is, because in Vol3ep3: Ruby herself says its "Fall". Volume 4 is a bit more tricky to pin... AS many know, the "Time-Skip" between Vol3 and Vol4 is said to be 6-8 Months. Why exactly? Well, with 4 seasons in a Year and 1 Year being 12 months: each season can be looked at as "3 Months". With "6 Months" passing, we know to move RWBY Seasonal Calendar by 2 Seasons; Excepts 2 problems: {1} When does Vol3 End? | {2} Why say 8 if they mean 2 Seasons. ~Well, Both Questions can actually be answered Together {Sorta}! At the end of Vol3ep12, there is snow on the Ground. When we think of Snow, We think of Winter. The Only problem is, We don't know how far along Winter has gone when we end it; and, Interestingly enough, 2 months aren't exactly a Whole Season either. So what this "Could" mean, is that we need to End Winter before adding the 2 season. If we do so, then In Theory: Vol4 begins around the End of Summer or the Start of Fall. ~However: When exactly the 6-8 Month is meant to begin is also a Question. I somehow missed this video when it first came out. After the fifth volume has ended, I can say this still holds true. Volume 5 was indeed Spring, as it showed new growth in the characters, and also a new hope as team RWBY finally got back together. Another things that can show that it was Spring, is that: 1) The snow cover melted and revealed some hidden truths such as Lionheart being a traitor; 2) Ilia shed the oppressive cloak of revenge; and 3) The heroes now have new hope at the end of the volume after beating the White Fang and Cinder and company, and gaining the relic... there also may be a redemption arc for Raven SPRINGing from this as well.
I am going to take a guess here and say vol 5 spring maiden will be revealed , then vol 6 the summer maiden , and at the end of vol 4 we will find out who the winter maiden is, because vol 3 gave us the fall maiden.

I haven't watched the video fully yet but I just realized that cinder's last name is fall and she is the fall maiden. Weiss's sister is named winter and ruby's mom is summer. ruby's mom might not be dead. And we might also see a new character that has to do with spring if we haven't seen it already
I agree with this theory but would like to put forward a reshuffle of the seasons n correlating volume. In Vol 5 Qrow tells the teams about the Maidens, the seasons and their correlating Relics. I do also think that each Volume ties to a season but just a slightly different one than EurptionFang suggests. I think that each Volume seems to be gearing up to the season aligning to its relic. Vol 1 - Winter - Relic Creation . I think this as the creation of new Teams, new friendships, for some characters creating a new life. (IS a bit on the nose, but its also the beginning of the show) Vol 2 - Spring - Relic Knowledge I think of this as the new knowledge Team RWBY & JNPR gained via their education,. We also begin to learn more about the world in general. The big bads are revealed etc Vol 3 - Summer - Relic Destruction. Here we and the characters witness the death of their friends and team mates, the destruction of the school. There are destroyed on an emotional, personal and in one case physical level. Their childhood illusions are shattered and forever changed. Vol 4 - Autumn / Fall - Relic Choice. Each of the main characters arcs is based around them making a choice and drives growth in each of them.. Ruby chooses to go with JNR, to the detriment of maybe ruining her relationship with her sister, however Ruby chooses to follow her mother's footsteps, choosing the greater good over family. Weiss makes the choice to no longer be burdened by her royal test, beginning to train so she can stand by herself, encouraged by her sister Winter's words. Blake chooses to return to Menagerie to face parts of her past in a bid to protect those she cares for. Yang chooses to pull herself together, chooses to wear the prosthetic, chooses to go after her sister even if that entails confronting Raven to do so.
wow this is stunning I always noticed the tone of each volume but I always thought it was the hero's journey thinking of each volume as a season and how the tone always changes about the 6 episode (or chapter) just like how the season start to shift about halfway through to the next season. Intended or not this is a genius storyline to follow and maybe a whole new way of writing plots
Where I used to live we had school canceled because there was a real feel of -8 degrees Fahrenheit, with a -85 degree wind chill. Also, it wasn't just snow. It was a full on blizzard, but since those happen so often, school went on as if nothing had happened. It's really weird now because even if we get a light dusting of snow, they'll cancel or delay school.
I have an insane theory about seasons Each member of team Rwby will eventually gain or represent the seasons Think about it Weiss is winter, she starts out cold and rude but learns how to accept others just like winter, winter annoying and majestic at the same time. Plus Weiss is from atlas the northern winter area. Yang is summer, upbeat joking and is constantly showed with fire, she is shown with heat. Now I can't decide between ho gets fall and who gets spring I feel both ruby and Blake can fit both seasons Ruby-fall, ruby is constantly leaving rose pedals kind of like a tree dropping its leaves for fall Ruby-spring, ruby is a new blossoming kid younger than the rest, and is much more cheerful. That to me sound like spring Blake-fall, blake is constantly dealing with problems and being antisocial and quiet. She is often looking in the past and never looking ahead of here Blake-spring, Blake does fit spring because of her growth as a character. She eventually learned how to grow into new people and friends multiple times and looking at the human gifts fall was choice, spring was wisdom and Blake does have much better common sense than choice.
The interesting thing, though, is how the story arcs seem to be packed together in threes, for example, volumes 1-3 being known as the "Beacon" arc, even called this by the steelbook. I wonder if they have any correlation...
Although you're technically correct, it's just how storytelling works and it happens to line up with how seasons work. Check the Hero's journey, it's basically how every story goes more or less.
DAMN STRAIGHT!! Not bad, bro. While watching, I thought of the relationship between the four schools and the seasons. Atlas Academy = winter, Shade = summer, Haven = fall, and Beacon = spring. These guys did well to hint at all this stuff.
Of course there is the winter holidays in winter, and that's the first couple of episodes of volume 4 and now we are getting into the January-February-kinda March point, when it is colder and harsher but will still turn out well in the end
You mentioned Cinder 'sowing the seeds' in summer. We can take this a bit more litterally. With many plants, you sow the seeds in summer and harvest in the fall.

Canada phoning in. Snow has fallen in August here before now. I really like the theory just had to point out that the season tend to merge the closer to the poles and equator you get. This could actually play into the season theory as different places have different levels of each season, summer being milder, winter being harsher and the like. So perhaps with the characters travels or as the show progresses the season flow will drift and or merge
Watching this after volume 5 has ended really solidifies the theory, 5 was like transitioning into spring, things starting off bad but eventually getting back with the defeat of the villains and reuniting of the team
after watching volume 5, i can really see this theory as vol 5 was turning a new leaf in the story with people finally moving on, succeeding, and etc thus like spring
Also Winter is a time of compilation. Which is normally done alone. It is a time for isolation. When you think of winter you think of solitude. Which is why everything feels so separated and far apart. Everyone having to deal with their own hardship. But as winter comes to an end, things start to fall, and things come back together again. Like our favorite team.
Seems all sound even after Vol5. Plus Vol3 (fall) the focus was the fall maiden. Vol5(spring) the focus was the spring maiden. So the "logical" conclusion would be a hard turn to summer maiden in Vol6 and Winter maiden in Vol8. This would kinda makes sense if salem is indeed the winter maiden herself. If not this roadmap could very well still apply.

An amazing and interesting theory that apparently still holds to be true seeing as the end of volume 5 is near and so far the tone does suggest that it is spring. Hopefully the finale won't debunk this theory, because if volume 5 is spring, I certainly cannot wait for the lightheartedness that summer will undoubtedly bring on the 6th volume. I like the music, in this video, and you have some good quotes. I have not watched RWBY volume 4, but i have read pieces of the plots to each chapter on wiki and as much as i can see that each volume is colored to match the colors of team RWBY and given time to think, i can sort of relate to how each volume represents a season.
This is supported even more by the light-hearted and almost happy ending of volume 4. Qrow lives, our team is shown to be coming back together, Ozpin/Oscar shows up and we have "I'd like my cane back" scene which made me do an embarrassing squeal, Ruby's letter. It was Spring showing up and ending the harsh, dark and cold Winter with warmth and comfort. Also, it signalled a new beginning now that we are in this new area we haven't explored yet as well as team RWBY eventually meeting back up once again.
snowstorm in march? sounds normal. happens in april sometimes too, though it usually melts pretty fast. and then its pretty much summer. we skip fall here sometimes too. in fact, our seasons are so different we have renamed them to winter winter winter and construction season.
The casualties in Volume 2 are actually the White Fang members they fought on the train. The train scene was fun and all until of course you realize they were knocking people of a fast moving train, with Grimm behind them. Plus Mercury said that "many Faunus didn't make it out of the tunnels".
Hi just wanna let you know my jaw dropped over this theory which doesn't happen frequently. And after watching volume 5, with the girls getting back together, a SPRING of hope if you will, I'm completely invested in this thesis.
I fell like if you felt like it you could add in a tie to RVB Season 14, in an episode a favourite character of mine makes a reference to it as well, stating he prefers referring to time as seasons instead of months or years, going forward with this you could look for similar patterns in other Rooster-Teeth Series, to solidify whether they do this elsewhere?

I think his may be right. Volume 5 saw the return of Ozpin, Weiss severing ties with her father, Sun helping Blake open up again, Yang heading back out to join the fight and the team reuniting. So volume 6 should be a bit more relaxed now that the White Fang is leaderless and team retrieved a relic
If your theory holds up I would expect this next season to possibly be the season where things that were once hidden come to light (Dark of winter being brought to the light of spring.), and the training of new skills advance such as Ruby learning more hand to hand or learning from Qrow, Oscar just plain learning to fight and use magic, Weiss advancing the use of her newest ability to make it more versatile like how Winter conjured a storm and multiple beowolves, Jaune learning to plan and fight better as usual, ren making new weapons since reclaiming his old ones was never shown and him potentially working his father's blade into his fighting style, Nora finding a way to use lightning dust, and Yang just doing Yang and perhaps being Ruby's hand to hand teacher. Blake might return home and start work towards bringing the old White Fang back to life as well as training with her parents along with Sun possibly. I will be a time of developing new skills for all.
Since season 5 ep2 came out, we have basically guaranteed the reuniting of team RWBY, apart from possibly Blake but I reckon Blake is gonna go chasing the white fang and they're probably gonna be serving Salem and going after the spring maiden, so... Nice. Very well done.
The seasonal tones do make sense for the first 4 volumes, but I wonder if it will make sense to keep up with it in future ones. Assuming that RWBY can keep running for years to come, it may be constricting to have a big tragedy happen once every four years. Plot-wise, it might make more sense for it to happen sooner in some cycles.

This makes complete sense. It wouldn't surprise me that this is the case especially considering CRWBY have been writing the story many volumes in advance as far as volume 5 iirc.

I think the 9 volumes was more in terms of how far they intend of having RWBY go rather than how far ahead they've written the story outline. That said, it wouldn't surprise me if at this point in time, they have planned things out that far ahead compared to when I first heard about how far in advance they'd written the story.
I have a distant memory of hearing or reading that there's a chance these volumes could go as far as 20. But only God knows.
Well if this theory is right, you could combine it with the stuff about the first 3 volumes being a season and therefore assume its a 4 season show with 12 volumes which would cycle the seasons 3 times.

I was thinking of a big twist, such as the seasons themselves being put out of balance or order. Something crazy like the RWBY girls (or whoever) becoming the "wrong" (non-ideal) maidens and that causing the world to go out of balance.
Then they can re-arrange the tones.
You have to remember that the seasons are not all the same, like they said of the maidens.
Summer can bring heat waves and drought, both are damaging, like the flip side of the coin of winter.
(Spoilers for Volume 5) It seems so far that Volume 5 is indeed becoming spring. New beginnings, refreshment. The teams are coming back together, (BIG SPOILER) Professor Ozpin is back with Oscar, and the characters all seem to be ok-ish. They'll have to deal with all the crap leftover from previous volumes, what with Salem and Cinder and all that, but they're recovering. They're starting over.
Volume 3 introduced the fall maiden and volume 5 introduced the spring maiden. Next will probably be the winter maiden in volume 8 since it would be too soon to introduce a new maiden in the upcoming volume 6
Now that's one hell of a theory that could possibly be true. Loved it man.

You Really are spot on with many points!!! Vol1 takes place mostly at the beginning of a new school Year. The Show RWBY, has many influences to Japanese anime; and, In Japan, they follow a Year-Long school system that begins in the Spring. Vol1 does the Same. Vol2 begins the End of a Break, with a couple of months to pass. This "Break" being their "Summer" Break. Finally, Vol3 needs no in-dept guess at where it is, because in Vol3ep3: Ruby herself says its "Fall". Volume 4 is a bit more tricky to pin...
AS many know, the "Time-Skip" between Vol3 and Vol4 is said to be 6-8 Months. Why exactly? Well, with 4 seasons in a Year and 1 Year being 12 months: each season can be looked at as "3 Months". With "6 Months" passing, we know to move RWBY Seasonal Calendar by 2 Seasons; Excepts 2 problems: {1} When does Vol3 End? | {2} Why say 8 if they mean 2 Seasons.
~Well, Both Questions can actually be answered Together {Sorta}! At the end of Vol3ep12, there is snow on the Ground. When we think of Snow, We think of Winter. The Only problem is, We don't know how far along Winter has gone when we end it; and, Interestingly enough, 2 months aren't exactly a Whole Season either. So what this "Could" mean, is that we need to End Winter before adding the 2 season. If we do so, then In Theory: Vol4 begins around the End of Summer or the Start of Fall.
~However: When exactly the 6-8 Month is meant to begin is also a Question. Was it suppose to be applied to Winter, or During Fall where most of the Volume take place? I somehow missed this video when it first came out. After the fifth volume has ended, I can say this still holds true. Volume 5 was indeed Spring, as it showed new growth in the characters, and also a new hope as team RWBY finally got back together. Another things that can show that it was Spring, is that: 1) The snow cover melted and revealed some hidden truths such as Lionheart being a traitor; 2) Ilia shed the oppressive cloak of revenge; and 3) The heroes now have new hope at the end of the volume after beating the White Fang and Cinder and company, and gaining the relic... there also may be a redemption arc for Raven SPRINGing from this as well.
So Volume 5 spring is coming back!
I am going to take a guess here and say vol 5 spring maiden will be revealed , then vol 6 the summer maiden , and at the end of vol 4 we will find out who the winter maiden is, because vol 3 gave us the fall maiden.

I think that they do both. Some parts are obviously planned out ages in advance and some things seem like a pretty sudden and out of nowhere.

I agree with this theory but would like to put forward a reshuffle of the seasons n correlating volume.
In Vol 5 Qrow tells the teams about the Maidens, the seasons and their correlating Relics. I do also think that each Volume ties to a season but just a slightly different one than EurptionFang suggests. I think that each Volume seems to be gearing up to the season aligning to its relic.
Vol 1 - Winter - Relic Creation .
I think this as the creation of new Teams, new friendships, for some characters creating a new life. (IS a bit on the nose, but its also the beginning of the show)
Vol 2 - Spring - Relic Knowledge
I think of this as the new knowledge Team RWBY & JNPR gained via their education,. We also begin to learn more about the world in general. The big bads are revealed etc
Vol 3 - Summer - Relic Destruction.
Here we and the characters witness the death of their friends and team mates, the destruction of the school. There are destroyed on an emotional, personal and in one case physical level. Their childhood illusions are shattered and forever changed.
Vol 4 - Autumn / Fall - Relic Choice.
Each of the main characters arcs is based around them making a choice and drives growth in each of them..
Ruby chooses to go with JNR, to the detriment of maybe ruining her relationship with her sister, however Ruby chooses to follow her mother's footsteps, choosing the greater good over family.
Weiss makes the choice to no longer be burdened by her royal test, beginning to train so she can stand by herself, encouraged by her sister Winter's words.
Blake chooses to return to Menagerie to face parts of her past in a bid to protect those she cares for.
Yang chooses to pull herself together, chooses to wear the prosthetic, chooses to go after her sister even if that entails confronting Raven to do so.
With V7 on the way (the second “fall” volume) and seeing how V3 went down...I’m scared.
wow this is stunning I always noticed the tone of each volume but I always thought it was the hero's journey thinking of each volume as a season and how the tone always changes about the 6 episode (or chapter) just like how the season start to shift about halfway through to the next season. Intended or not this is a genius storyline to follow and maybe a whole new way of writing plots

Where I used to live we had school canceled because there was a real feel of -8 degrees Fahrenheit, with a -85 degree wind chill. Also, it wasn't just snow. It was a full on blizzard, but since those happen so often, school went on as if nothing had happened. It's really weird now because even if we get a light dusting of snow, they'll cancel or delay school.

Weiss is winter, she starts out cold and rude but learns how to accept others just like winter, winter annoying and majestic at the same time. Plus Weiss is from atlas the northern winter area.
Yang is summer, upbeat joking and is constantly showed with fire, she is shown with heat.

Blake-fall, blake is constantly dealing with problems and being antisocial and quiet. She is often looking in the past and never looking ahead of here
Blake-spring, Blake does fit spring because of her growth as a character. She eventually learned how to grow into new people and friends multiple times and looking at the human gifts fall was choice, spring was wisdom and Blake does have much better common sense than choice.
The interesting thing, though, is how the story arcs seem to be packed together in threes, for example, volumes 1-3 being known as the "Beacon" arc, even called this by the steelbook. I wonder if they have any correlation...

Check the Hero's journey, it's basically how every story goes more or less.

Canada phoning in. Snow has fallen in August here before now. I really like the theory just had to point out that the season tend to merge the closer to the poles and equator you get. This could actually play into the season theory as different places have different levels of each season, summer being milder, winter being harsher and the like. So perhaps with the characters travels or as the show progresses the season flow will drift and or merge
Watching this after volume 5 has ended really solidifies the theory, 5 was like transitioning into spring, things starting off bad but eventually getting back with the defeat of the villains and reuniting of the team

Also Winter is a time of compilation. Which is normally done alone. It is a time for isolation. When you think of winter you think of solitude. Which is why everything feels so separated and far apart. Everyone having to deal with their own hardship. But as winter comes to an end, things start to fall, and things come back together again. Like our favorite team.
Seems all sound even after Vol5. Plus Vol3 (fall) the focus was the fall maiden. Vol5(spring) the focus was the spring maiden. So the "logical" conclusion would be a hard turn to summer maiden in Vol6 and Winter maiden in Vol8. This would kinda makes sense if salem is indeed the winter maiden herself. If not this roadmap could very well still apply.

An amazing and interesting theory that apparently still holds to be true seeing as the end of volume 5 is near and so far the tone does suggest that it is spring. I have not watched RWBY volume 4, but i have read pieces of the plots to each chapter on wiki and as much as i can see that each volume is colored to match the colors of team RWBY and given time to think, i can sort of relate to how each volume represents a season.

This is supported even more by the light-hearted and almost happy ending of volume 4. Qrow lives, our team is shown to be coming back together, Ozpin/Oscar shows up and we have "I'd like my cane back" scene which made me do an embarrassing squeal, Ruby's letter. It was Spring showing up and ending the harsh, dark and cold Winter with warmth and comfort. Also, it signalled a new beginning now that we are in this new area we haven't explored yet as well as team RWBY eventually meeting back up once again.

The casualties in Volume 2 are actually the White Fang members they fought on the train. The train scene was fun and all until of course you realize they were knocking people of a fast moving train, with Grimm behind them.

Hi just wanna let you know my jaw dropped over this theory which doesn't happen frequently. And after watching volume 5, with the girls getting back together, a SPRING of hope if you will, I'm completely invested in this thesis.
I fell like if you felt like it you could add in a tie to RVB Season 14, in an episode a favourite character of mine makes a reference to it as well, stating he prefers referring to time as seasons instead of months or years, going forward with this you could look for similar patterns in other Rooster-Teeth Series, to solidify whether they do this elsewhere?

I think his may be right. Volume 5 saw the return of Ozpin, Weiss severing ties with her father, Sun helping Blake open up again, Yang heading back out to join the fight and the team reuniting. So volume 6 should be a bit more relaxed now that the White Fang is leaderless and team retrieved a relic
If your theory holds up I would expect this next season to possibly be the season where things that were once hidden come to light (Dark of winter being brought to the light of spring.), and the training of new skills advance such as Ruby learning more hand to hand or learning from Qrow, Oscar just plain learning to fight and use magic, Weiss advancing the use of her newest ability to make it more versatile like how Winter conjured a storm and multiple beowolves, Jaune learning to plan and fight better as usual, ren making new weapons since reclaiming his old ones was never shown and him potentially working his father's blade into his fighting style, Nora finding a way to use lightning dust, and Yang just doing Yang and perhaps being Ruby's hand to hand teacher. Blake might return home and start work towards bringing the old White Fang back to life as well as training with her parents along with Sun possibly. I will be a time of developing new skills for all.
Since season 5 ep2 came out, we have basically guaranteed the reuniting of team RWBY, apart from possibly Blake but I reckon Blake is gonna go chasing the white fang and they're probably gonna be serving Salem and going after the spring maiden, so...

The seasonal tones do make sense for the first 4 volumes, but I wonder if it will make sense to keep up with it in future ones. Assuming that RWBY can keep running for years to come, it may be constricting to have a big tragedy happen once every four years. Plot-wise, it might make more sense for it to happen sooner in some cycles.
