Weiss's story happend first, that's for sure, most likely 1-2 weeks after the Fall of Beacon. She's seen flying to Atlas
Blake's story happens second maybe a few days after Weiss's (except the sea-monster incident) since Sun stated she left immediately after she saw her teammates were safe and it would take at least 4-5 weeks by boat to get to Menagerie.
Ruby's story happens in the spring following the start of their winter trek right when the timeskip ends.
Yang is clearly holding a piece of paper, most likely Ruby's letter, on the boat so after Ruby's story ends Yang's begins.
Weiss most likely arrived on Mistral before anyone else, (since she's flying in by air and for the reasons mention in the video), Blake would most likely arrive second, then Ruby arrives.
Since Yang is going by bike she would likely arrive very quickly (within a matter of days if not a week)
Despite the advanced robotics it probably took a very long time to make Yang's new arm mostly because it would have to be calibrated for fit and weight. Normal prosthetics in our world (and even the Open source arms) usually take time to make, also with the CCT down they would have to send Yang's measurements by aircraft to Atlas (A week). Atlas would have to make the arm (5-6 weeks) and then ship it back to Yang (2-3 weeks).
In other words they sent the order for the arm around 8 weeks before Yang's story.
Also since Blake is in Remnant's southern hemisphere the seasons are reversed. When Blake's story takes place it takes place in summer (Vale's winter).

One thing to mention is that at the end of volume 3 we see Blake loose Gandal Shroud in her fight with Adam, then we see her running off with Yang, and without Gandal Shroud which means she would have had to make her way back into the grimm infested school to get her weapon and that couldve take a few months

Did she lose it? I mean, he knocked it out of her hand, but I don't see why she wouldn't have picked it up. Plus, she has it at the end of episode 12 when she is hopping between rooftops.

We don't know the exact dimensions of Remnant. But looking at the map, it should take roughly the same amount of time [or less, depending where the ship sails from] to reach it.

That's why we have Fang here to give us the light and take any fallback the writers didn't wanna take, while only claiming this as a theory so it's not truth and we take it how we want - I guess? we dont know when they all turned up, like take ruby and co turning up, qrow meets oscar at the end but he is physically fine and walking about meaning he has recovered from his injury. Blake took time to cross the entire WORLD to go from vale to menagerie this takes time. Weiss could have been at home for a few months before getting angry also the travel time from vale to atlas and then from atlas to mistral takes time and yang had to drive a couple of days plus the boat trip as well as her mental struggle period before the months of training. All we know is oscar, ruby, jaune, red, nora and qrow are in mistral and yang and weiss were on their way before or after they got there

It would be interesting if Rooster Teeth gave us the timeline by inserting subtitles, like 3 weeks since the fall of beacon, 2 months since the fall of beacon, etc... Maybe fans can arrange the scenes and episodes in a reasonable chronological timeline and post it on some RWBY fan site or theory site, or even submit it to Rooster Teeth for review.

I came up with the same theory that Volume 4 was happening at different periods of time. I figured we were just seeing them at the same time for narrative purposes. I figured Weiss' story probably happened within the time skip. I wouldn't be surprised if she had arrived at the destination before Ruby.

  • @Mati-kun

Nice tyheory. Everything sounds plausible...But you got me thinking. We all asumed that there was a time skip of about half a year based on the character's appearance, on how they grown, Ruby is older and so on. But like I said before you got me thinking, what if there wasn't any time skip or at least not as long as we assumed. I do get your point and I also thint that the storys of Weiss and Blake happened the earliest in Volume 4, taking place a couple of weeks to two months (loocking at the world map of Remnant, Blake had the longest journey of all of team RWBY) after the events of Volume 3, but not on the timeline.I do think Ruby and team RNJR were the first to arive on Anima, because they leave a couple of days after the fall of Beacon and as to Yang we still see her getting nightmares involving Adam and her cut arm,so we can assume that she still recovers from her psychic wounds. Now the key factor in her part of her story is her new robotic arm, how long do you think it could take to build something like that and it was custom made specially for Yang.
I think its like this: the real time skip is about two months and every thing we see during Volume 4 are the events that hapened in the remaining months, based on the map of Remnant and Noras and Rens conversations about the distances between the villages. That means that if my line of thoughts is corect that that wahat we assumed to be a about half a year time skip is in truth the whole Volume 4 .

  • @Littlepup93
    @Littlepup93 6 лет назад +1

It's funny watching this video after Volume 5 has just been concluded, since we know by then what order all the characters arrive in Mistral at.
To cover Blake and get the odd one out of the way, she arrived last since she spent a lot of her time in Menagerie. I believe her story happens the earliest of the four and takes the longest time to unfold from when it starts to its conclusion. She left the group first, after being sure that the others were okay, and likely didn't take more than a month to get on that boat home. A lot of the time with her story comes from commuting, since boat is a slow means of travel, especially to some island far off the mainland. Travel time could have been anywhere from 1-2 months, which wraps the events of her story into a similarly contained 1-2 months time frame. By the time she rejoins Team RWBY, over 6 months has passed.
Ruby's is the easiest to work out after that. The events of volume 3 happened in autumn, and she leaves in winter. So it was a few months before she herself left. Let's just estimate 2-3 months just to be on the safe side. The other 3-4 months is travel time from Patch all the way to Mistral. When she's writing the letter, it's likely been a week or two as Qrow is seen doing a lot better, and more time after that when Qrow finds Oscar. The events after this point happen in a fairly open time frame, but likely also took weeks. By the end, it's been at least 7 months since the fall of Beacon.
Yang's story took place a bit before Ruby's, since she has a lot of ground to cover in order to catch up. It's spring at least by the time we see her, so it's possibly another 3 months on top of the aforementioned 1-2 that it took for Ruby to take off. She's spent a great deal of time recovering and adjusting. Now normally I would say that time wise this doesn't line up, since that would mean that it takes way too long for her to meet up with Ruby in the approx. 7 months. However, as we see, she doesn't go straight to Mistral, she seeks out Raven to save herself a lot of time and effort searching. This allows her and Weiss to arrive when they do.
Weiss's story line is the hardest to place, but it definitely took place the earliest. Since she's in an arctic climate, it's hard to place a time of year like Yang. Instead, I feel the idea that she spent a couple months before the events of her story in seclusion and then the events with her family taking place over the course of an additional two seems like a fair estimate. She leaves and has what's likely the fastest travel time, since she's going by airship. However, as we know from Volume 5, she doesn't arrive at Mistral. Her airship crashes and she's taken captive by Raven's gang. Since communication is down, word that Weiss is their hostage would take a very long time to reach her father, and even longer after that to negotiate a ransom with him. Weiss could have been captive for months working out and attempting to execute her stealthy escape plan. During that time, Raven may have sent someone to deliver the message and was waiting for a response. Since Ironwood is putting the kingdom under lock down though, word can never come. She'd be saved by Yang between months 6 and 7 and Raven would send them off to Ruby.

If the entirety of team RWBY meet up in the first episode next season it wouldn't phase me one bit. I felt all season that we were seeing characters at different times. It would make sense chonologically for them all to be in Mistral atm, hell Ruby might've been the second last to arrive, followed shortly by Yang.

  • @aphoenixneverdies2621

Thank you! Great job! I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one that was bothered by the timelines, especially since Miles & Kerry never really spoke out about them. Probably to cover up possible inconsistencies. Clever. Then again, RWBY has never had a very accurate timeline. However, I agree with you, almost completely. But we still have to wait till Vol. 5 to find out if your theory is correct. I believe that Vol. 5 will focus on one place (Mistral) while also keeping track of Blake's separated story, and the times of the arrivals of our heroes in Mistral will show us if you are correct.
For Vol. 4, we only know with certainty that RNJR took "weeks" from Shion to Kuroyuri, Yang's training took place over "weeks", and the time between Weiss's first scene and the charity concert is also "weeks". For Blake, the events in Menagerie seem to happen within a few days, as Sun and the parents are just getting to know each other.
I agree with you that RNJR and Yang's stories are pretty much in sync at the end of Vol. 4, and expect Yang's arrival in Mistral in one of the first Vol. 5 Chapters. And I really hope that Weiss is already there, because if that is not the case, we are supposed to believe that she sat in her room for half a year. I also agree that Blake's timeline takes place earlier than others, because I want to believe that Sun did not follow her around for months like a creep. Blake's story will be the last one to be connected to the others, probably stalling for that late Vol. 5 reunion with the team and especially Yang. Oscar arrives days or weeks after RNJR, because Qrow is already up and drinking. Other than that, it is not too important. The villains don't really matter as well, until they strike again.

I believe the events were actually stretched out. Weiss's starting mere weeks after the events of Volume 3, but ending around the same time as Ruby's arc, for example. She could have been locked in her room for months, as it would be ridiculous for her father to think she wouldn't try to escape at first, and that there should be no way for her to have completed the summoning literally a day after being locked up. It must've taken quite some time.
Blake's story-line is questionable, as we can assume she went directly to her home, or hid for a while to think of what she needs to do.
Yang's was clearly stretched out from the time we see her having PTSD, and actually leaving home to find Ruby/Raven. The events of the finale could have taken over a month, considering i find it ridiculous for Yang to travel from where Ruby left to Mistral in simple days.

to be fair, Miles and Kerry have sort of redacted the '6-8 months' thing at the rtx Sydney panel, and said the time skip isn't really defined and is 'not too long, but not too short.
also on the reinforces of grimm in beacon and Glinda in Vale could have happened at the same time, since beacon always seemed to be rather separated.
otherwise great theory, haven't really seen something on this before.

Thank you so much for this! I've had this theory in my mind ever since chapter 9. In chapter 9, Yang says that she and Tai have been training for weeks to see if she could still fight. If the stories really did line up then that means that when Qrow was hit by Tyrian's tail in chapter 8 he would have had to go weeks in the condition he was in without being treated. So that means that when Team RNJR FINALLY made it to Kuroyuri Qrow would have been long dead if the venom in Tyrian's stinger really was so dangerous. Either Qrow is SO much more of a badass than what is shown or the events don't line up. But at least Qrow's not dead, that's the main thing.

Im fairly certain that Yang is going to go find her mither first. Then go to mistral. Also it makes sense that yangs story happens last if weiss is taking a aircraft. When yang is channel surfing the news says that all aircraft activity has been ended except for evacuation purposes. So weiss would have needed to have left on the plane before that.

It took Ruby and the rest of RNJR at least a month or two to reach Mistral. And at the latter end of Blake’s storyline, there were a couple times her dad referenced the White Fang attack on Haven happening in a week, while RNJR, Qrow, Weiss, and Yang were all preparing for it to be in a day or two. So a lot of time did pass, and each storyline follows its own timeline, but they all converge at the attack on Haven. Rather brilliant storytelling.

  • @animefan-ji8rd

with Weiss, i think he is right about her timeline except for when she leaves. i believe, after Weiss lost he position of heiress she spent at least bit of time training in her room to get better at summoning. i would say this time is about 2 weeks to a month. Blake would be next in series with when we see her on the boat i would think it is about halfway through her trip on the boat. i feel she would have got a boat from the closest port to Menagerie, which would have taken a couple of months for her to walk including sleep and eating. as for her going to mistral, i think that is a very likely thing. she will want to confront adam, the embodiment of her demons from the past, and leave her father to deal with the white fang in Menagerie. i believe yang and RNJR's stories play out at a similar time, being towards the end of the time skip. Yang, like she said in episode 4, is just getting used to life with just one arm. she has definitely gotten over most of the shock of losing her arm and the only thing left of that is how she will feel like Adam is watching her. RNJR are closer to the end of their journey as well as, like he said in the video, their story has short gaps in between episodes. i feel like yang leaves shortly after RNJR arrives at mistral as it would take a week or two for ruby's letter to reach home.
about the Glynda working to restore beacon and Salem saying to reinforce their numbers at beacon, i think Glynda is doing well to fight off the Grimm so Salem is trying to overwhelm her with more Grimm.

I definitely see this being the case. And I certainly thought this was the case as the Ruby wrote the letter.
The story might have benefited from one story being told at a time, making for a slower pace, and at the expense of not showing fan favorites until later. That being said, if we told Ruby's story last, can you imagine the out rage people would have made if we went more than 2 episodes with out seeing the main character.
RT did a decent job telling and setting up a lot of smaller plot threads, that will probably lead to a pay off later.
The four stories were juxtaposed in to have an emotional response and still make sense/flow together with out leaving out our main girls, or the villains.
can you imagine vol 4 starting with the Blake episode, then starting with the Weiss Arc, then the RNGR episodes, cut it off to start Yangs arc, then finish with Ranger again. And this is me rearranging the rendered content. And it came off ranty... sorry.

I feel like Yang left after Ruby's letter made it to Yang and Tai. When Yang is in the garage/shed with her bike her dad says that they both read the letter and they both know Ruby is in Mistral, so I'd assume it's the most recent one since he's referencing a specific letter. Granted I'm pretty sure Ruby said she's been sending letters for a while, but I don't think she said in every letter she'll be going to Mistral. The timing for Yang leaving vs the letter seemed a bit too one-point I think :P I guess Ruby could have write it on the note she left at the end of Volume 3, but I think Tai would have called it a note instead of a letter idk

  • @AnonEcho98

Personally, I think Yang left _after_ Ruby's letter, since she seemed to be reading it on the boat. And before anyone jumps up and says something like "Well how did Yang make it to that signpost in such a short amount of time?" Well, let's see, RNJR were on foot, and even alter on were slowed down by Qrow, probably stopped at a few villages and generally didn't go the most straightforward of paths, plus, while Yang was on her motorcycle, alone, and probably went the fastest route.

Before the video, I had always had a problem with Vol 4 in the fact that it doesn't tell us when these guys are doing these things. No real definitive timeline to showcase that these stories we were seeing were from different places in different times. They could of really done a lot better if they end up showing what one of the RWBY team mates had some connection between the other and showing that some time had taken place.

I know it has been confirmed that volume 4 stories occur in different timelines. Miles said so in a German convention, Connichi. Blake's storyline started earlier.

Here's hoping we get to see SSSN in all it's glory now that we're in Mistral, at Haven. Put some character on those abs that ISN'T exclusively tied to Blake/Weiss. (And I say this as a diehard fan of Sun.)
Oh, and maybe we can get ABRN in another appearance.

"Are we supposed to believe that three members just happen to be going to the same place at the same time?" YES, it's called suppension of disbelief if you have ever watched anything before, or maybe sometime of "Team Spirit" or some other b.s. explaination

Blake said she was taking over the White Fang, before Adam can kill Khan. Khan and Adam are going to Mistral, so Blake probably isn't staying in Menagerie.

  • @MrPatate251

That is a clever analysis of the timeline, but I think you have one little detail wrong: Weiss getting to Mistral before Ruby. If it was so, we would have seen her with Ruby there at the end of vol. 4, greeting her when she arrives. I do believe you have the timeline right, just that Weiss never made it to Mistral. As she is flying in a Schnee Company ship, I think that her ship got taken down, and got captured by the White Fang and Adam in order to lure Blake out of Ménagerie. My theory is that team RWBY will be separated in 2 in vol. 5: Ruby and Yang in Mistral and Blake will in a sense be with Weiss, trying to rescue her from the White Fang.

      @MrPatate251 7 лет назад

Zack Rose I know, this theory also contains wishfull thinking of things I would like to see in vol. 5. But still, maybe Weiss will just get there after Ruby in the begining, but I think that if she was there when RNGR arrived, we would have seen her

when jaune asked ruby how many weeks she thinks the travel time is what did ruby say? i think that is the key point in all of this... also half a year? i think this story happened 2-3 months tops after the fall of beacon... a lot of things could happen in 6-8 months it's just too long of a time skip...

I thought that was pretty obvious. I mean of course they wouldn't all be happening at the same time, also I thought it was just several months, that doesn't really mean 6-8 then it could mean like 2-3 months I don't know.

I believe Rwby's story began first because earlier on in their journey Ren asks Ruby how long she thought the trip was gonna take and she replied a few weeks, but she was quite obviously, incredibly underestimating the length of the journey. Not to mention it must have taken them a while to get to the first town . This is because the blacksmith says that even before becan fell, the scroll signal was never good there. This means that it had to be a long ways away from where RNGR started.

Now the real question: was the order of storytelling done intentionally? Or did it come about due to poor writing and planning?

tbh i wouldn't be surprised if u were wrong. The writing for rwby for some aspects are quite off and i would bet u crwby didn't take most of your points into consideration while mapping out vol 4
Edit: i now think that they will never address the timeskip considering how they're very forward with the story / worldbuilding as oppose to elaborating or explaining things.
