Hi Brian and the heartbeat of the show the Camera crew, As a 48yo newbie to the hobby. I received my S2 last week, didn't need to look at the instructions because i've watched this vid so much! Had my third flight with my instructor today and got to do my first take off!! which was awesome. RF trainer edition with the dongle has been a real help for confidence in the controls(my instructor wont let me use Beginner or intermediate mode he's old school lol) Just want to say thanks for videos you both do and you really have inspired me to go out and just do it!! Buy the plane find the club learn to fly awesome times ahead.
AWESOME! So glad we could encourage you along your way toward success! It's so cool to take that first flight, and non-fliers have no clue the level of excitement with flying RC planes. I love that it's NOT easy ;) If it were easy, anyone could do it, but the process necessary means that the nature of things sorts out those who aren't really into it - LOL ;) Congratulations, and so glad for your success! Now go find 3 more people and bring them along for the ride!!!
Seriously, I don't know where to begin. I'm currently awaiting this beauty to come out of backorder status so it can ship to me and I found this video to tide me over. Hands down the best thing out there. Informative and clear while the humor you share with your wife (the camera crew) is priceless. Thank you, sir!! Now I've subbed and have already received a new video notification so I don't know just yet how this newfound friendship will affect my wallet. 😂
Happy Anniversary, Y’all. Ours is Wednesday... 31 years. The model, flights, review, technicals, and video is a slam dunk as always. Y’all are the best.
Once again, SUPER VIDEO. Here are some tricks I know of: 1. Use a MISTING spray bottle w/rubbing alcohol in it. Depending on how sticky a surface is mist one side or both and it will give you adjustment time when sticking something to something else. If only one side sprayed do it in the sticky side. When alcohol evaporates then there is a full hold of the item. I have done this so many times I can't tell you. 2. Put index finger in mouth to get wet all around. Then hold up in the air. EZ and accurate way to determine wind direction. 3. Get stick, dowel or something 1.5' long or more. Tie on a very narrow and light piece of ribbon or string on it. Hold it out and it will give you an idea if it is too windy or not to fly. This one below I have NOT tried. --- Spray or paint on a water-based acrylic coat(s) on Styrofoam parts. They claim this "shell" prevents dings and depressions in foam model airplanes. Tnx for the video info, again. It was great. I ordered this b4 I first saw this video (last Sunday) . I also bt alligator clip plug-in wires so I can charge from my car battery. I will be able to use this same charger (Spectrum S1200 DC) at the local school grounds I am going to fly at.
First RC Airplane, 75 years old and bought the Carbon Cub S2 and going to install flaps before I attempt first flight! I won't have any assistance but have watched a bunch of how to fly videos. Will fly it at my sod farm. What is maximum size Spectrum LiPo battery that I can use in this plane. Want to have at least two batteries. Love your Unbox, Build and Maiden flight videos. Have watched a number of ones that are way over my head but still enjoy the process. You and your wife make a great team! Don't change - I like the fact that you show us how to work through unexpected problems. Thanks again The Sodfather
I'd use 2200mAh 3S 30C as the MAX, but if you want the BEST flight performance, I'd get the 1300mAh 3S 30C... SMART Chargers bit.ly/32qiuBD Bats bit.ly/39bWmwk Thanks for the question. You can do it, and will! It's not easy flying RC planes, but it's a LOT easier than it's ever been to learn to fly RC planes. I want to encourage you to keep at it!!! Buy some glue and don't be afraid to use it when you crash (you will...just like every other RC pilot including me), and fly till you're sick of the plane you have now. You will be ready for the next plane when you can switch out of SAFE some of the time without issue. When you're COMFORTABLE out of SAFE, you will know that you can fly another more complex or harder to fly plane. There's a few other really good "trainers" out there now and they too can help you bolster your experience as you "move through the ranks". We'll be here to help as you work to where you're aiming for, so please ask away and we'll try our best to help you along. Sod farm would be a GREAT place to fly this plane!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC I just ordered it and the S2100 dual Smart Charger. Was going to order the Maule M-7 1.5m as my next plane but everyone is out and some say it has been discontinued. What do you recommend and have you, or will you, do a build and fly. I asked the same question on the Maule video comments. Thank you
Your RC videos are not only fun to watch but very enlightening. I have learned so much and can only hope that the day will come when I can fly like you. I just got the Carbon Cub S2 with DXS transmitter and have been able to fly it once in calm wind. I just mounted a GoPro on the battery compartment door and hopefully won't have any problem getting it off the ground. I have done a lot of modifications with regard to the hardware and fasteners that came with the plane so when it crashes it will be pilot error and not a mechanical failure. Thanks again for your great videos.
My old red and white standard Carbon Cub has clocked up over 800 flights and is still flying, the wheel fairings were discarded long ago,my airplane flies from a dirt field and never lets me down,I love this model, great video Brian.
I bought this as my first plane about a month ago. I just started not using safe. It started as short moment where I would shut it off just to do loops and immediately turn it back on and now it’s fully flown with safe off. After about 20 flights with safe off, I can confidently say it is 400x more fun when you get to that level of experience. Only bummer is now I’m really sad I banged it up so much learning.
This is great to hear, and banging it up learning is WHY you get this and not the Draco :) You and everyone else is still annoyed they nearly killed their first and most beloved trainer ;) I too have a fixed-more-times-than-I-can-count-trainer, and she still lives :) She's half glue, but she lives!!!
Enjoy it while you can because one distant day in the future, when youre done for the day throwing that Extra 300 around, its your early days you will remember - and miss - the most.
@@jjs3287 that’s why you do things that bring you joy, rather fly an rc for a year or 2 then watch $300 sit in my bank for a couple years. gotta enjoy life man , that’s all we can do! there’s never a right time to start doing what you love, you just gotta dive in and things will start happening!
As an experienced pilot, let me tell you that you never stop banging up planes. As your confidence grows, you take more risks and things happen. Minor damage adds character to the planes anyway. I love all my wrinkled-nose planes.
Wait till you get flaps on that, Brian. You are going to be amazed how slow you can go, especially with a 1800ma battery. With the right flare on landing, you will grease them every time.I have the S+ version one, and also have a very well used Sport Cub S with flaps, which I learned to fly on. Same airframe, and a real winner from Horizon. Oh, and I feel you on the pants. I've lost mine more times than I can remember! Thanks for the entertaining videos, as always
Got round to building mine today ! After 10 minutes of trying to make sense of the building manual it went in the bin ! I have built the whole kit with your tutorial , Thanks Brian this certainly made it so much easier .
I took your advice to not over think it all and just ordered the rtf version and I'll get a transmitter eventually. This way I get the battery, charger etc. Since I am starting over. Thanks again for the advice while you are flying. Just flew today, two batteries. No problems for an out of practice flyer. So much fun. Just like to say, you make it look easy!
Thank you for your videos. I’m a old rookie Rc helicopter pilot that been in and out of hobby because life just takes over. Always missing it when not doing it. Well bit the bullet and purchased a rtf Carbon cub and a Dx6e with 620 receiver for more airplanes in future.
Found your channel after buying and assembly this plane. Good to know I manage to not screw anything up. Can't wait to get it airborne. Thanks for all the information on the videos!
I’ve recently been watching plane videos and you always pop up with the plane I’m looking at. You do a fantastic job demonstrating and even better flying. Thanks to you and your wife for making thorough videos:
Thanks for the video. A couple of comments. The vortex generator strips are easy to put on if you peel the paper off of one side of the foam tape and then stick the tape strip in the groove. Then peel the other side of the paper off and stick the generators in. Also on the tail assembly, there is a 3rd screw (2x8mm) that screws in from the bottom into the rudder. Note to Horizon, I wish the screws were larger. I know everything is about saving weight, but you could double the weight of all of the screws and it wouldn't be noticeable.
My Wife wanted a plane for her Bday. I chose this because it’s easy to fly and I’ve been out of flying for 4 years. Of course she’ll never fly it, but if it’s for her… she knows I’ll buy it. I’ll do flaps from the beginning and zip ties too. Thanks, just ordered it yesterday.
The Carbon Cub is a superb plane, I have mounted wingtop and front cameras on it and it still flies beautifully. Would love to meet your camera crew LOL!. Superb videos. Many thanks.
Thanks Martin! She's featured in the occasional video - look up the Aeroscout 1.1m unbox, build, radio setup, and she's in that video, also in the Airbus A380 video, and a bunch of others intermixed throughout our channel's history ;)
BEWARE! first time beginner buyers..... If you want this model, no matter who you buy from, then make VERY sure you order the "CARBON Cub S 2" and nothing else. I got rooked into buying the runt of the litter, the "SPORT Cub S2" It's only about half the size of the one shown here, suitable for flying in your bedroom. Beginners luck I guess but not what I thought I was getting, and to ad insult to injury, it costs MORE than the big brother. :o( Because I am a nice guy, I won't name the company, just beware.
you all prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..? I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
I just got back into flying after about 10 years of being out of it. I bought a aeroscout just so I could kind of get my groove back lol. I just ordered this plane and it will be here today. I came across your channel while I was trying to relearn everything. You are awsome and thank you for your videos they really helped me get back into it without worrying. Keep up the good work! I'm subscribed with notifications on my friend!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Heck yeah it has! I'm loving the safe flight feature. It makes it alot less stressful. Technology has really advanced for the better. And I'm loving it!
Hi Brian, I've come down with "airplane fever." I now own this plane and I want to thank you and your camera crew for this great video showing the complete build, setup and the flying for the Carbon. Due to your input, my build and setup was a success and I look forward to doing a maiden flight soon, just waiting on the weather. I'm also thinking about flaps and also viewed your video for adding flaps to the Carbon. I have both the stock radio and the NX8. If I go with flaps I probably will use the NX radio which will auto mix in the ruder with flaps. I think in your Flaps video, you found that although the stock radio worked, it lacked a ruder mix, so you had to compensate when deploying the flaps. I love your attention to detail, descriptions and videography. I also recently purchased the PA-18 1300 and received a nice discount using your channel, a real plus. Thanks again, I'll be back for more.
Hey Brian....awesome videos as many have commented, so so helpful for me, an RC newbie as green as green can get... I sit here after a few days getting things together: Carbon Cub S2 w/flaps..✔ Extra Spektrum batteries (hard to find in stock)... ✔ S2200 charger (LOVE it)...✔ XBC100...✔ AMA and local club membership...✔ FAA cert and registration (why is it always that to do anything legal in aviation it has to be "except as..."???)✔ So the only thing I don't have is something you can't give me nor can I buy.... confidence... I am a former commercial pilot and have more than 1000 hours of dual given... but I can't seem to get the courage to get out there and just get that maiden under my belt!!! It's such a great plane right now... Anyway.... great job doing what you're doing.... and I don't mean your videos... I mean being a great dad and husband for your family! Keep it up...
James... If you can fly a REAL plane, you can do this! Here's another way of looking at it... You can wait 2 months to put in your maiden, or 5 months, or a year... In 2 years, you'll be 22 month deep/ 19 months deep / 24 months deep...putting you behind where you could be if you had flown it TODAY. You just need time at the sticks. Get the plane in the air, and thank me later ;) Don't pick a bad day for weather, but beyond that, just get out there and do it. You'll be fine, and if you're not, and it crashes into 100 pieces (which it won't) you'll be well on your way to working through the hard lessons of flying RC. There are no shortcuts. There is no "right" time, except NOW. Just make sure there's decent weather "NOW". You can do it. You're heart will be pumping hard, like the day you first soloed, but you CAN and will do it. Confidence or not, you need to do it. Good luck (but you won't need it - you have SAFE - LOL)!
I got the valiant as my second plane, i ended up ordering a new s2. It'll be here today. Just watching to refresh memory on the build process. Thanks Brian Phillips!
@@BrianPhillipsRC i had the carbon cub last year, i do love it. Had to replace it. Built it in no time flat today. Where i will have most trouble is when i get a descent tx. The programing the mixes etc. I'll probably dtruggle with that a touch.
Looked this up after being utterly confused at the screws and labeling, let out a big sigh when you realised a screw must have been wrong somewhere as I had been copying you. Doesn't matter in the end really, it'll stick, thanks for your video on the build, was very helpful!
Lol 2 yrs later after this video. My Carbon Cub S2 will be delivered here today 😂 I'm so glad & so nervous at the same time. I've never flown a RC plane before. So wish me luck lol. Thanks for your videos, it definitely helps me figure some of this out.
Good advice. I was always told by the first person that taught me to fly, “radio controlled aircraft are attracted to telephone poles, barns, stationary objects, cars, other radio controlled aircraft, and pretty much anything that you would not think you would ever hit like a magnet to steel”. I believe it’s the same principle as why cops get hit all the time on the side of the road. When something other than your aircraft is attracting your attention then you’re going to plow it. It’s just what happens. It’s hard to follow the plane enough, it’s even harder to relate it to where stationary objects are on the ground. I take a good amount of time walking around and surveying the area where I’m going to fly before I ever even think about taking off.
I'm in the process of rebuilding my Carbon Cub S2 after a particularly bad crash (new pilot), and all the various views of the outside and inside of the plane are really helping me out. One of the wings looks like a cow (yes, a cow) may have partially put some weight on it, so I've ended up with what I guess you could call a negative dihedral. Hoping it doesn't end up mattering too much. I know that the entire plane can be rebuilt buying parts from Horizon Hobby, but putting it back together is fun :D
Welcome to the addiction Bruce!!! Don't worry too much about anhedral you've picked up...when you're in the air, SAFE will help keep you level, but if it really bothers you, you can try to hang the plane with a large book, or books to weight it overnight, and see if that helps....but I wouldn't worry too much about it, as it'll fly okay. After crashes, there's a lot less pressure on you as a new pilot, so take advantage, and do learn something from every crash...soon enough you'll be an expert!!!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Here I am 10 months later. Thanks for the tips Brian! The Carbon Cub S2 is history. Long story short, seemed to lose control, not sure if it was mechanical or what. At any rate, straight down, prop first into the asphalt. Gave me an excuse to get the UMX Turbo Timber Evo, which I'm having lots of fun with. Also got an NX8, which I'm really enjoying.
You really do an outstanding job on the Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m RTF. I'm a long time drone guy that has become bored with drones. This video has convinced me to purchase the Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m RTF as it looks like the best RTF out of the box for a beginner getting into planes that I can learn on. Thanks for the great work.
Thanks John! You can fly fixed wing, and will do just fine with this. Drones are so similar, you will probably freak out when you get in the air and realize you can't stop, but it's all good when you get the hang of it! Good luck and thanks for being here with us! Please know we have thousands of other videos as you progress into fixed wing and hope you'll enjoy more as you have time :)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hey Brian, I have a Carbon Cub S 2 1.3m RTF with 2 extra batteries and upgraded charger arriving Friday. I am going GPS ( Call me a p-ssy ) lol. The GPS option just gives me some comfort of not flying out of range and landing in the State of Vermont to never be found again as I have no clue what range I should fly at. I'm blessed to live in a rural area with expansive flight space of many acres but there are no flying clubs here. So it's only me to teach me. Heading out to mow a take off and landing strip.. I predict a very interesting weekend filled with excitement and fear. :) :)
@@BrianPhillipsRC I must obey! Lol. To be honest I am still trying to find that perfect little scale plane that looks great yet can fly like a UMX Timber. I sometimes curse Matt for designing the little T. I may have to start building my own again.
Great video..just purchased this plane and you made it very easy to assemble watching this each step of the way..Thanks for posting this..Very helpful..!
You can and should fly without either of those mods, but if you've already got them, please be super patient. It's hard to setup the GPS, and pretty frustrating too. The LAS will be pretty easy to get setup, but I don't think you'll need it. Glad you're here with us, and good luck!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the reply, Brian. From what I have been told over the last day or so, and your comment as well we may just hook up the LAS and start there. I saw your little dance for the GPS, lol. Seems like it could be frustrating for my son with that when he takes it out on his own. Thanks for the info again and we continue to watch your channel for all the great info and content.
This is the plane I fly almost daily ( not in heavy wind) except most of my flights are in the green (rookie) mode and very slow compared to this so I can extend flight time per battery. Ok so now you know where I am coming from … I can’t believe how well you fly it in advanced mode and how precise the aerobatics are. I think my foam would crack in half if an experienced flyer tried this on mine. This is the RC analog of the old master playing the beat up old violin which then sells for a huge price at the auction. I think I need to save up for the simulator😊 Thanks for showing me what this plane is able to do!
FANTASTIC video to say the least. I am going to purchase this in the next week or so and had planned to. I am just awaiting a return email from Horizon regarding ac/dc chargers. I want one that I can also charge batteries, from my car, at a local school ground. I'm glad I came across this video first as it really helps clear up some things. Interesting that the trans can take a rechargeable battery too. Thanks again, Rich
DC Smart Chargers - bit.ly/406bGTW (I like the S1200, but would normally not go for it, since I almost ALWAYS charge at home, so this DC option might be a great choice for you.)
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thanks for the reply. Well, I am looking to go to my local school to fly it. I would need a DC charger so I can fly for awhile even if I buy 5 or so batteries fully charged when I arrive. I guess I would be able to connect this to my car battery. Any ideas for me? Your RUclips videos are great. I really enjoyed them. Thanks again, Rich
You can do it! Practice on a simulator will help, but you can reinforce bad habits too, so please get a cheap plane and crash it hundreds of times. You WILL love it. AND you'll be surprised how fast you learn to fly, if you fly in decent conditions.
Happy Anniversary! She has put up with you for quite a while. 😀 Tell your kids how lucky they are to have such great parents. I'm new to this hobby, since Covid 19, but already have about 10 planes. The Carbon Cub S+ was my third I think. It hasn't been in the air yet but I did install flaps after watching you do it on other planes. My confidence level is up now since I flew the UMX Aero Commander which has NO safe, so my next flight will probably be the CCS+. Great video as always, I had to laugh when the camera crew was trying to focus on you and the plane unsuccessfully. Your preflight GPS dance was quite humorous too.
Hey Brian great video! I have the Carbon Cub S+ and love this plane. I did add flaps and it does make for great slow flight and presentation. Just a side note that I wanted to say to other viewers is that I Never engaged the GPS or virtual fence just because I heard so many negative reviews about the plane flying off or doing things on its own and I like to be in total control of my planes. Enjoy your videos and look forward to many more. Thanks.
I unplugged the GPS right after I did the binding before the first flight on my carbon cub s+. I didn’t want to do the dance or remember to disable anything before every flight. And it made programming the flaps a lot easier.
Love the channel guys. This was my first plane and still get it out from time to time. Loves 4S. Will fit a 3200 mah 4S but is a a lot of fun on a 2200 mah 4S.
Did I hear you correctly, you said you put a 4S 3200 in the cub and it fit?, I couldn't get a 3S 5000 to fit in the Cub S. How was the engine temp after running the 4s 3200?
Thanks for the great video! This Carbon Cub S2 is my first plane and the knowledge you share made my experience much easier, but also added definition to concepts I experienced. I appreciate this plane more because of what you showed and experimented with.
Oh my, the value added innuendos are priceless. "Dad what are you watching?" "Never you mind there junior, go play with your Lincoln Logs, this is for adults!" Pretty excited about the flap modification video too. :)
Sadness. Hi Brian after watching this video several times and taking your advice (as well as from TheRcSaylors and Horizon Hobby) I purchased the Carbon Cub S2, having received it and assembled it, I took the plane to my local rc flying club. Having never flown before I approached the senior instructor and ask for some lessons.. He examined the plane and notice it had a gyro We don’t fly planes with gyros he said he will give a test flight, afterwards he said the plane was not suitable for lessons and refused to teach me. He and some other older members said I should by a bigger plane and transmitter and I had wasted my money. I was so excited going there and these guys left me disappointed
Screw those guys!!! They are the PROBLEM, not you. I'm not into the club scene, and they can pound sand as far as I'm concerned, and this is one of the reasons. Let me preface my comments by saying, there are some very good clubs too, so maybe check around, but if you can't find another one to help get you up in the air, just do it yourself. Admittedly, it would be very helpful to have a more experienced pilot to help you start flying, but if you EVER get "help" like this - RUN - They aren't worth your time! Sorry for your bad experience. We're here to help you along. Don't let these FOOLS ruin it for you.
Also what do you mean by it didn’t come with flaps that you will install (I haven’t had time to watch whole video if it in there) I ordered this one should it come with flaps or will I need get some for better performance?
Please check out this video, then watch the FLAP MOD VIDEO, and you'll get it better. Sorry for my slow reply....just getting caught up...well, trying to get caught up.
This plane is a BEAST,,, love it, It wants to fly . I have put it into the ground nose first replaced the prop, glued the crack in the nose and coul flew like new... sept my pants landed in the swamp.
After seeing everything else you've flown I Can definately tell you're a sport cub s pilot. I have two of the little guys! Not sure if this cub is what I'll do next but I can tell, man.
I love my Carbon Z Cub ;) This plane is very good as a beginner plane, but I think HH squeezed in some features that weren't totally necessary, and they might have save a few features and held down the price a few bucks...that being said, I LOVE the looks and way this plane flies, just wish I could get one BNF without the extra, unnecessary goodies...like LAS, and GPS Ready...I just want AS3X and SAFE, and flaps and LED's ;) That being said, she's gorgeous!!!
Thanks Brian hope you do a video with flaps and lights added, I have the first one with gps that I never use and already added the flaps to mine. Unfortunately I haven't figured out to set up flap mix cause the gps is in aux1 and horizon hobby video has the flaps in aux2, enjoy your video's always informative, thank you and your camera crew!!! Happy Anniversary!!!
I still have the first S1 version. I've added my own receiver and fly it off my DX 9 radio. I've added pontoons. I bought metal wing struts for it, but haven't got around to installing them yet. Good review, thanks Brain!
This is the plane I use for training new pilots. They can't get too far away with the fence. I also put an FPV camera on the horizonal stabilizer. I do use a 1300mAh.
The fence is great if you know how to set it up, and actually understand what you're doing (like you a trainer) but for a beginner, I just don't think the GPS is a great tool. Glad you're finding some great use for the tech!
Salutations Sir Phillips. Awesome videos, you both do a fantastic job! I literally just had my successful maiden with my Carbon Cub S2, factory settings on Experienced/Hi-Rates mode only. I've never flown before but reviews like yours has really helped me out. Cheers!!
Hey Brian, Got it all working. I think the Flight Controller is a little wonkie. I think what I should have done is get it all working without the flaps (one less channel to fool with) and THEN add in the flaps. But, now, I do have the FMode switch (switch B) driving Green, Blue, and Red; and dual rates. Also I do have the Flap switch (switch D) driving the flaps. Whew, glad that's over! Bob
Good luck Bob! Glad you got everything setup. P.S. This is a trainer, but it's not the easiest plane to setup, which is very counter-intuitive, but you'll believe me when you get another plane, and it takes about 1/3 the time to set it up ;)
I have the CCS+ got it Christmas 2019 - built it and never flown it... flown a load of other aircraft but for some reason not this one - she is a hanger queen.... but your video has inspired me to get her into the sky... just for the fun....
I just put in my order for this package, now its the waiting game and reading the manuals, etc. This is my first rc plane or anything else for that matter.
You're in for a ton of fun, and a lot of learning, so get ready! Hope you'll be back as you continue learning...it's a VERY steep learning curve, but if you stay committed, you'll have it in no time at all!
I bought the Carbon Cub S+ as my first plane. Crashed it a couple of times so it's not looking as good as it once did but it flies so nice. Never regreted the buy until now when I see the new version a month later. The small battery and no real way to see how much is left is the only things I'm wish it never had. My first crash was due I made the wrong input on the GPS and the fence got placed outside the landingstrip. :D
I believe your rudder and tail wheel came off because you did not install the screw just above the tail wheel. Time stamp 1:12:09 shows you installing the two larger screws to secure the tail assembly but the small screw above the wheel has not been installed. I only realized that because I had the version one with GPS.
I found this plane easier to fly than the AeroScout2... and that plane so easy. I love how quiet the Carbon Cub is at half and lower throttle with the stock propeller. Advice to any new people to flying like me, order 2 or 3 spare props when you order this plane. It's VERY durable, but the props eat it hard. Very fun plane!
Great video! Just received mine today (For my grandson and myself) and will be re-watching video while building. I noticed your screwdrivers- might want to look into buying a set of JIS (Japanese industrial std. I think) screwdrivers. They fit non sae screws much better.
Hey brian. ordered my carbon cub and battery and charger from Amazon being delivered tomorrow yes. I ll be watching your put together build we shall do that together. Thanks for that video
So, it's your anniversary and only you get the present? Happy anniversary! If you don't want the Real Flight, I can take it from your hands with pleasure. Yes, we want to see the flaps video. No, I'm not getting this plane ($$ reasons), but I did buy 2 sunglasses from your link.
LOL - My camera crew got "a present" ;) As for the Real Flight...I don't have it, but would like to play with it. Thanks for supporting us by buying the sunglasses. I'm really liking them so far!!!
Great great video from beginning to end, Thank you for posting. I’m waiting for my model to arrive and this was extremely informative especially when putting it together, I’m sure I will return for reference...lol....Thank you again, also hope you and your camera crew had a great wedding anniversary 😊
@@BrianPhillipsRC I finally got my Cub yesterday evening and guess what, instead of reading the manual I followed your video part by part and build it no problems!! Thank you again for the great video, this was my first build ever! I’m now thinking of adding the flaps, I watched that video twice already , but i only have the stock Transmitter so not 💯 decided.
I just put my carbon cub s 2 together,.I had questions about the transmitter switches that the manuel did not cover, but you did..I could not find any info on what the D switch was for..I do thank you so much for the video..also I do thank your lady for doing such a great job on the camera
My dad has said he will get this plane i can't wait to fly this im pretty young i always wanted to fly that plane now i can so im happy. Thank u for the vids they are mostly my inspiration.
Nice plane and electronics Nice flying to Brian Nice camera work to camera crew cant leave you out 😁👍✌️ Happy Anniversary 16yrs AWESOME Ive been married 21yrs got married when we were 24 our birthdays are 2 days apart Dec 4th mine Dec 2nd hers both born in the same hospital in 74 ✌️
Another important thing the manual fails to mention that beginners should be aware of, if you install the flaps you will definitely want to use a flap/elevator mix. This plane suffers from some of the worst ballooning I've ever seen when flaps are deployed and needs some down elevator to counter. Once you get it set up well it makes slow flying quite a bit more fun.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Sorry, to be honest I didn't watch the entire vid before I posted (still haven't) I just thought it was important info for newbies to know and I wasn't sure if it was addressed or not as it's a very, very long vid. I've been flying planes and helis for almost 25 years so I really don't need to watch these type of vids but I still enjoy them, usually when I'm lying in bed with my phone... just didn't have the time to finish this one yet. I bought the S+ to teach my daughters how to fly as they've both shown some interest and it's been great for that purpose. I pulled the GPS module out before I ever assembled it, as you said "I don't like it" and it's completely unnecessary.
Thanks Hell_Cat -= My videos are much cheaper, and less addictive than Ambien - LOL :) :) :) I appreciate you may not watch the whole thing, and totally get it!!! Now that we're in the country, and paying $180+ per month for crappy internet, I can't watch all the videos I want too...plus busy with my own RUclips channel like never before ;)
Hello Brian and Mrs Megan aka camera crew, anniversary time. Congratulations. I have the carbon cub s+ it is a good trainer and an everyday flyer. Its the version 1 its got gps, holding pattern, auto land and virtual fence. Its a all around awesome plane. The second one seems to be just as awesome. Thank you for your video keep flying you guys. Oh still thinking on a first helicopter on your recommendations. Again as always well done. Thank you for your video. Just having fun RC'n with friends and family members

I found a easier way to put in the double sides tape for the vortex generators. Peel back the backing 1/2" and place the tape in the groove. Slowly pull the backing as you line up the tape.
I'm a wheelchair user and have never flown an RC plane do you recommend this as the best complete beginner plane that will allow me to enjoy the freedom these beautiful planes give.
I know of many people who are wheelchair bound that enjoy RC. This plane or the list of other beginner planes would be a great place to start. Keep in mind, depending on your level of mobility, you might need a hand to get the plane when you run it off the runway, or when the plane needs to be set on it's wheels, for example. It happens a lot when you're new, so just keep that in mind when planning, but as you get to being a better and better pilot, you'll need less help for when the plane ends up in a bush, or tree...since it will happen with reduced frequency. These are my most common beginner list. One other idea, if you would be interested, consider this simulator for practice before you get out on the tarmac. RC Sim bit.ly/3q5rSUF It's not cheap, but it will put in your hands, the same type of controller you'll be using, and this will help you get the necessary muscle memory built. It will help you shave many repairs off your future endeavor, but if you're like me, you'll want to fly and crash to do it FOR REAL...REAL has value, even if it's harder, more expensive, more tedious. Good luck!
OMG...can you do the GPS dance again? I couldn't stop laughing. I had to rewind and watch it a few times. At first, I thought it was just me. Then, I heard the camera crew laughing. Love it!!
EXPERIENCE UPDATE: Not only is this model fun and relaxing to fly, it is tough. My first fubar was into some tree branches. This model is large, and so can appear closer than it is. That was a contributor to the crash. Some clear tape and epoxy repaired the various blemishes and cracking of the wing mount, but it all went together. My second crash was straight down from about 20’. Turning downwind I got gusted and the wing stalled right out. This model is not easy to induce a stall, so I don’t blame the model at all. It was just freak wind. A new prop (thanks for suggesting I order spares Brian, as I had them) and spinner and all was good. Fourth crash was a stall from a very tight turn at 3ft AGL, and the repairs were minimal and easy. The most dramatic, and recent was into the very top of a tall white pine. I let the LARGE model get further away from me than I should have. When it disappeared behind some trees I knew bad things would happen. Full power and up elevator didn’t “pull it out of the woods” and I heard a crash. Well there it was stuck and there it sat for 5 days until I got ahold of an arborists line launcher. Vigorous branch shaking released it, falling, hitting, falling more hitting, and down. No damage other than blemishes and one servo arm. Wow. Now, about these Smart G2 batteries and charger. I’m flying a 2200 3S 20C in the Cub and it had been connected to the ESC for 5 days. The total voltage was down to 4.2V. All the cells were below 2V at about the same voltage. What the hell I thought, let’s use the Smart charger and see what happens, outside, on a rock! Well, the charger displayed the same data as the Smart checker and went to work at 0.5A charge. And... a while later it was at full charge. There was no puffing at all, no indication of damage, no hot spots, nuthin! So this morning the Carbon Cub S 1.2 flew again with its badly abused and resurected from the dead battery. A nice 10min flight to 40%, then back in the charger. For real? I just cannot get over the quality of Horizon Hobby and Spektrum gear. Not only are the directions wrong with regard to those screws, they are also wrong on the installation of the GPS. The cub manual says there is a “pocket” with a “lid” and there is not. There is a place you can sit the GPS module on top of the receiver, but nothing to secure it in place, so I guess you have to tape it. In order to find the GPS plug in the receiver you have to wrench the receiver out of the plane cause its mounted with double sided tape, not velcro or a strap. Forget trying to reach technical support... *deleted*. UPDATE: I was totally wrong about tech support. It is there but the website makes you work to find the number, and there is no direct email address. You have to fill in a little form, and then you get an email back with a case number. From there it can take a while for responses, but responses to come in time. When they come, they are very helpful. That said, I was able to get it all together (opted not to install the GPS) including the programming on an NX8. This has to be the easiest plane to fly. I started with a Wingo years ago, and loved that slow flying, stable little craft. This airplane with the Beginner, Intermediate and Expert modes is super safe and easy to fly. Landings on the B & I modes take a bit of getting used to because when the throttle is moved to zero on approach, all down elevator authority is eliminated. You have to set up well back on the glide slope and power off to touch down. I was a bit concerned that it would slow so much that it would stall on short final, but it did not. Holds a nice controllable airspeed all the way to touch down. I did find a lot of pull to the left on takeoff. Have to hold full right rudder (in B or I mode) in order to get the plane moving down the runway, but then release it once the elevator achieves more authority with speed. Not really a good attribute for a beginner. It’s great that RealFlight 9.5 has this exact model available, and its pretty true to the real model. Definitely worth coming up to speed on that. Thanks for this review Brian. I should have watched this before attempting to complete the model. Oh yeah, I also did your tie wrap on the wheel fairings from the start and have no problems with them popping off. Any chance you’ll get one o the larger versions!??
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience! I've called Horizon Hobby many, many times and always been able to talk to a person (eventually). They almost ALWAYS have you on hold forever, or you can request a call back...then they call back while you're sitting on the toilet, or in front of your boss (both have happened to me). As for chat and email support - nope - NOT for me!!! I don't have time for that mess. Here's the number I call, and I've always used. 1-888-959-2305 ...I called to test it myself just NOW. Just call and then request a CALL BACK. You have to call during business hours, M-F in Central Time Zone, FYI. Sometimes they open up the hours to include Sat AND SUN! Horizon Hobby has by far, the BEST customer support I've experienced from an manufacturers I work with. I've had good luck from MotonRC, and Aloft Hobbies as well, but they are NOT manufacturers...they're distributors. As for the GPS... I do NOT recommend the GPS, and for that reason, I won't waste my time supporting it. It is complex, and "Clunky" to install and later to setup for use (EACH TIME), but if installed and setup correctly, it CAN work. I don't understand why they market this item to new RC pilots, especially since it's so technically challenging to get 100% right...and if it's not 100% right, catastrophic failure may be the result. I think it a false sense of security, and far too complex to be used in this environment. That being said, if you have experience as an RC pilot, it could be a neat tool, but it will scare the heck out of you when you first hit the "Geo-Fence" as the plane is no longer be under your control, while it turns around and climbs...regardless of surroundings wind, etc - you'll be scared to death for a few seconds before you realize what's happening! I can only imagine the plight of a new, or lesser experienced RC pilot experiencing this for the first time.
@@BrianPhillipsRC Hey Brian, thank you for the phone number. I’ll try it on Monday. I could not find a number anywhere on their website, nor could I find an email address for tech support. Only the chat window which would provide no response (during weekdays business hours), and then tell me to try later... On to the GPS. I’ve used that option in Real Flight and yes, it can be unnerving at first experience. I found that when in the far setting (default is near) the control command and return is more manageable. I never thought about it flying the airplane into obstacles, but sure, it could do that. I thought it would be handy to prevent me from flying the plane out of sight, but perhaps not. I’ll take your advice and remove it from the plane before I fly it the first time. Yes, the preflight setup does look like a PITA, for each flight. Thanks again for the help.
Thanks for sharing with your as always entertaining videos! I found a great deal on the Carbon Cub S2 just to good to ignore. The flight time on the 2200mah looks really long so I got two Spektrum smart packs as well! I will absolutely put flaps on mine. Keep it going!
I love that it's NOT easy ;) If it were easy, anyone could do it, but the process necessary means that the nature of things sorts out those who aren't really into it - LOL ;)
Congratulations, and so glad for your success!
LOL - Fold out those crisp greens, and kiss them goodbye ;)
Same it's soooo annoying I just got the turbo timber
Happy Anniversary, Y’all. Ours is Wednesday... 31 years. The model, flights, review, technicals, and video is a slam dunk as always. Y’all are the best.
Thanks!!! Congrats ;)
Once again, SUPER VIDEO. Here are some tricks I know of:
NICE! Thanks Richard!
Just wanted to update you. Flew the Carbon Cub several times today. You walked me thru the build and the modes. Went very well. Thank you
Great to hear! It's a fun plane, and very glad you have it!!!

Thanks for the question.
Thanks so much Phil! sorry for my super slow reply - been crazy around here!!!!!!
My old red and white standard Carbon Cub has clocked up over 800 flights and is still flying, the wheel fairings were discarded long ago,my airplane flies from a dirt field and never lets me down,I love this model, great video Brian.
Awesome! That's a lot of flights!!!
LOL - "lost your pants more times that you can remember!" - LOL Best comment!
Got round to building mine today !
After 10 minutes of trying to make sense of the building manual it went in the bin ! I have built the whole kit with your tutorial , Thanks Brian this certainly made it so much easier .
NICE!!! Thanks Martin!
So glad you did, William!!! When you're ready, you will like having this one as a backup, or even for another small plane ;)
Happy Anniversary. I used the mucilage for the first time. I love it. I hope you are enjoying yours!!!
I am, and have been ;) It's awesome glue, right?!!?
Brian Is the Poet of Rc flying. Its why i love watching ur videos no matter how boring the porduct is. Wisdom. Wisdom flows!!😅
Thank you!
16 years is wonderful not many couples can say this Happy Anniversary
oops 17 years now!
Thanks - Good catch ;)
I like the way you put the plane to the fullest and do many tricks and high speed passes to show the potential
Thanks Carter! Glad you're here with us!
Thank you for your videos. I’m a old rookie Rc helicopter pilot that been in and out of hobby because life just takes over. Always missing it when not doing it. Well bit the bullet and purchased a rtf Carbon cub and a Dx6e with 620 receiver for more airplanes in future.
Glad you're back with us in the air!!!
there is no way my wife would be that patient being my camera crew u are such a lucky guy
She sure is patient!!! Super blessed to have her with me ;)
Found your channel after buying and assembly this plane. Good to know I manage to not screw anything up. Can't wait to get it airborne. Thanks for all the information on the videos!
You're welcome, and so much more as you progress deeper into this wonderful hobby! Good luck and WELCOME!
I’ve recently been watching plane videos and you always pop up with the plane I’m looking at. You do a fantastic job demonstrating and even better flying.
Thanks to you and your wife for making thorough videos:
Thanks!!! We're glad you enjoy the content. We work hard to put it together, and we're very glad you're here with us Anybody's Guess!
True, and thanks!
brilliant brian watched the whole thing for 2.5 hours ,loved it
AWESOME! Thanks Kelvin! I hope you're learning some good stuff. There's so much to share, and even at 2.5 hours, I feel like it's rushed!
Sweet!
Thank you for the most detailed, honest review of this plane! I am definitely going to pick this up soon!
Hope you do! Great plane, and it'll help you get from beginner to intermediate, and in style too!!! Good luck!
you all prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account..?
I stupidly lost my password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@Korbin Kylo Instablaster =)
Nice! Glad you relapsed ;) LOL This hobby has changed so much in 10 years, hasn't it?!?!
It’s amazing to see you fly in an environment with this much danger, especially that close to the ground. Skillz
Thanks!
Hey Brian....awesome videos as many have commented, so so helpful for me, an RC newbie as green as green can get...
I sit here after a few days getting things together:
Carbon Cub S2 w/flaps..✔
Extra Spektrum batteries (hard to find in stock)... ✔
S2200 charger (LOVE it)...✔
XBC100...✔
AMA and local club membership...✔
FAA cert and registration (why is it always that to do anything legal in aviation it has to be "except as..."???)✔
So the only thing I don't have is something you can't give me nor can I buy.... confidence...
Awesome! Glad you got them! You'll love this plane!!!
Thanks Ross! Sorry about my confusion ;) I forgot a screw to hold the RUDDER on at the base of the rudder...sorry about that!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Oh you did? Good job I haven't flown yet I'll have to check that haha
Lol 2 yrs later after this video. My Carbon Cub S2 will be delivered here today 😂 I'm so glad & so nervous at the same time. I've never flown a RC plane before. So wish me luck lol. Thanks for your videos, it definitely helps me figure some of this out.
I came here to just to watch Brian dancing with an airplane (26:20). Now, my R/C aviation experience is complete! Keep up the great work sir!
Happy Anniversary ! This video has perfect timing as mine is set to be delivered tomorrow !
Perfect!
I take a good amount of time walking around and surveying the area where I’m going to fly before I ever even think about taking off.
yes
Just built my carbon cub with you thanks Brian
Every time I watch your videos I come away convinced I have to have one. I have to say though this Cub does look awesome.
Right on! It's good, maybe you need it ;)
Carbon Cub S2 bit.ly/3bS2r3O
@@BrianPhillipsRC I must obey! Lol. To be honest I am still trying to find that perfect little scale plane that looks great yet can fly like a UMX Timber. I sometimes curse Matt for designing the little T. I may have to start building my own again.
Great video..just purchased this plane and you made it very easy to assemble watching this each step of the way..Thanks for posting this..Very helpful..!
Glad it helped & Glad you got one!!! Good luck!
Just got this for my son, first two upgrades before our maiden flight are the LAS and the GPS Safe.
I think I need to save up for the simulator😊
Thanks for showing me what this plane is able to do!
I aspire to fly this good one day. I bought RF9.5 first instead of buying this plane so that I can get the muscle memory down. Great job!
Awesome! 10 plans in just a few months!!! You're going to be needing a dog house very soon!!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy yours too! The GPS can be kinda scary!!! BUT it could be nice, I just think it's too dang complicated for a beginner.
Awesome Ed!
Just what I was waiting for. I love this plane. I unplugged the GPS on it didn’t need it but it’s still in the plane.
yes, I heard that from a bunch of folks!!!
Love the channel guys. This was my first plane and still get it out from time to time. Loves 4S. Will fit a 3200 mah 4S but is a a lot of fun on a 2200 mah 4S.
Sure - you can cram a lot of weight into one of these, but it'll crush your landing gear if you're not careful when you're learning ;)
Did I hear you correctly, you said you put a 4S 3200 in the cub and it fit?, I couldn't get a 3S 5000 to fit in the Cub S. How was the engine temp after running the 4s 3200?
Yea a 3200 4S will just fit. With a mix of sport and scale flying it would get up to around 160-165F
Thanks for the great video! This Carbon Cub S2 is my first plane and the knowledge you share made my experience much easier, but also added definition to concepts I experienced. I appreciate this plane more because of what you showed and experimented with.
Great to hear - Thanks JustinConsistent!
Oh my, the value added innuendos are priceless.
"Dad what are you watching?"
"Never you mind there junior, go play with your Lincoln Logs, this is for adults!"
Pretty excited about the flap modification video too. :)
LOL!!! I'm glad you get it :)
“I’m not gonna have to get full penetration with my shaft” I’m weak
Thanks Brian, I take note of your recomendations
Great!
I’m definitely buying one of these when my COVID check gets here.
It's a blast!
Just getting into this hobby and I think this will be my first plane, looks awesome thanks for the video
This plane is a BEAST,,, love it,
It wants to fly . I have put it into the ground nose first replaced the prop, glued the crack in the nose and coul flew like new... sept my pants landed in the swamp.
LOL! Bring a clean pair with you when you feel a crash coming!!!
After seeing everything else you've flown I Can definately tell you're a sport cub s pilot. I have two of the little guys! Not sure if this cub is what I'll do next but I can tell, man.
I love my Carbon Z Cub ;) This plane is very good as a beginner plane, but I think HH squeezed in some features that weren't totally necessary, and they might have save a few features and held down the price a few bucks...that being said, I LOVE the looks and way this plane flies, just wish I could get one BNF without the extra, unnecessary goodies...like LAS, and GPS Ready...I just want AS3X and SAFE, and flaps and LED's ;)
That being said, she's gorgeous!!!
We will work through that together then ;)
The trimming of the rudder is actually produced by left turning tendencies, including p(propeller” factor, descending side of blade is moving faster
.
I still have the first S1 version. I've added my own receiver and fly it off my DX 9 radio. I've added pontoons. I bought metal wing struts for it, but haven't got around to installing them yet. Good review, thanks Brain!
Thanks Nick!
Glad you're finding some great use for the tech!
dude thank you so much, I have built many rc cars and trucks but this is my first plane. Great video.
Tip Stall = Accelerated Stall Your wheel pants = My landing gear fairing
Great video, loved the acro.
Happy Anniversary!
Salutations Sir Phillips. Awesome videos, you both do a fantastic job! I literally just had my successful maiden with my Carbon Cub S2, factory settings on Experienced/Hi-Rates mode only. I've never flown before but reviews like yours has really helped me out. Cheers!!
So glad to hear! Congratulations!!! Many more to come!
Hey Brian,
Got it all working.
You will LOVE it, get her outta there!!!
That's a huge bummer!!!
I have 2 carbon cubs and also the Extra 300. Both fantastic planes. They are Top notch
True - they are great! Why two?
Brian Phillips I crashed one and got another new one. And then fixed the broken plane as well. Lol
I believe your rudder and tail wheel came off because you did not install the screw just above the tail wheel. Time stamp 1:12:09 shows you installing the two larger screws to secure the tail assembly but the small screw above the wheel has not been installed. I only realized that because I had the version one with GPS.
You are correct ;) I've heard from a few people since then, and you're right Michael!
Thanks for your review. Just purchased this plane with your link. Looking forward to flying!
I love flying slow like that. Good price. Love the smell of cut grass.
Me too!
Happy anniversary guys !Great video 👌
Thanks! New picture!??!!
@Brian Phillips ya I build models sometimes too.✈️
I found this plane easier to fly than the AeroScout2... and that plane so easy. I love how quiet the Carbon Cub is at half and lower throttle with the stock propeller. Advice to any new people to flying like me, order 2 or 3 spare props when you order this plane. It's VERY durable, but the props eat it hard. Very fun plane!
Happy anniversary, I just celebrated my 40th in May
Wow! 40 Years Congrats Charles!!!
Nice!
I love watching your videos so informative and helpful. You’ve gotten me better at flying my planes I thank you for that.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the feedback Jake, and hope we can both learn to be better pilots together!
Very nice! Hoping to get my maiden in this weekend! Pleasantly surprised its capable of doing some "back yard" flying, looks nice and smooth.
If you have a big back yard, for sure ;)
That white thing with two black dots is a landing assist sensor. It helps u flare on landing.
Sure is ;) I need to give it a try
Great video! Just received mine today (For my grandson and myself) and will be re-watching video while building. I noticed your screwdrivers- might want to look into buying a set of JIS (Japanese industrial std. I think) screwdrivers. They fit non sae screws much better.
I've heard this before, and this is a great idea!
Hey brian. ordered my carbon cub and battery and charger from Amazon being delivered tomorrow yes.
LOL - My camera crew got "a present" ;)
As for the Real Flight...I don't have it, but would like to play with it.
Glad it was helpful! I forgot we did that on our anniversary weekend, or around it!

WOW - cool story! Like you were meant for each other!
@@BrianPhillipsRC Yep 👍✌️
Another important thing the manual fails to mention that beginners should be aware of, if you install the flaps you will definitely want to use a flap/elevator mix. This plane suffers from some of the worst ballooning I've ever seen when flaps are deployed and needs some down elevator to counter. Once you get it set up well it makes slow flying quite a bit more fun.
I talk about that for a good 10 minutes of the video...did you mis that part?
Thanks Hell_Cat -= My videos are much cheaper, and less addictive than Ambien - LOL :) :) :)
I appreciate you may not watch the whole thing, and totally get it!!! Now that we're in the country, and paying $180+ per month for crappy internet, I can't watch all the videos I want too...plus busy with my own RUclips channel like never before ;)
I bought a E-flite EFLP09060 prop for this plane and love it. It's perfectly balanced and incredibly quiet. Fits the Cub prop hub perfectly.
Yes, I guess I thought that was the prop that's included for when you fly from floats??
I'm gana say happy birthday old fella.... Now to watch the VID

Nice little plane, some good flying👍🏻
Thanks!!! This plane is a blast to fly, and a real beauty!!!

It's not cheap, but it will put in your hands, the same type of controller you'll be using, and this will help you get the necessary muscle memory built. It will help you shave many repairs off your future endeavor, but if you're like me, you'll want to fly and crash to do it FOR REAL...REAL has value, even if it's harder, more expensive, more tedious.
Good luck!
Thank you very much for the detailed and helpful reply I really appreciate you taking the time to do so.
OMG...can you do the GPS dance again? I couldn't stop laughing. I had to rewind and watch it a few times. At first, I thought it was just me. Then, I heard the camera crew laughing. Love it!!
I need someone to make one of those techno dance videos with all my shenanigans - it would be awesome!!!
Over the moon was legendary
100% - love when that works out ;)
EXPERIENCE UPDATE: Not only is this model fun and relaxing to fly, it is tough.
Really enjoyed the tutorial. Just ordered mine 👍🛩️
Hope you enjoy it! It's a fun plane, and super encouraging for a new pilot.
@@BrianPhillipsRC thanks. fingers crossed as only flown Helicopters
Thanks for sharing with your as always entertaining videos! I found a great deal on the Carbon Cub S2 just to good to ignore. The flight time on the 2200mah looks really long so I got two Spektrum smart packs as well! I will absolutely put flaps on mine. Keep it going!
Very nice! Good luck! you'll really enjoy it, for sure!
@@BrianPhillipsRC It was fun to fly but I have to fly some more to get to know it more.
