I bought my S2 Oct 15th 2020 and my Landing Assist Module arrived yesterday. It's a 3- 4 month wait for the LAS. I have waited to fly my plane until I had this part. I'm new to the hobby and bought the Carbon cub S2 as my first plane to ensure a successful maiden flight. Now we all know that things happen but thanks to RC sailors I'm feeling confident getting started in the hobby
At 61 years old I got this as my first airplane. From the first flight take off and landing went smoothly with no LAS. My only “oops” was that tall tree that was way closer than it appeared. I even enjoyed the repair experience.
That is really awesome Ralph! Sounds like you are experiencing the hobby the way it was meant to be enjoyed! Sorry to hear about that tree, but welcome to the "club" 😁 We've all had those pesky trees jump to life and grab our planes out of nowhere! Happy Flying 👍😎⚓
Abby: "but I walked away.." Thanks Nate for the awesome, honest real world flying review and assessment. That was great! And Abby, you are SO charming, nice, and a skilled camera person. Thank you much! Time to do some right handed turns tho Abby.. we're waiting not so patiently! :)
I'd say it's good for the hobby. It's a lower threshold for beginners. I can say from personal experience, wrecking your first plane on the maiden flight is extremely discouraging. So anything that helps keep the plane from wrecking long enough to actually get experience with it is a good thing.
I’ve had all sorts of off road trucks and on road cars (drifting, trophy trucks, crawlers, and monster trucks) my whole life. This safe tech is makin me want to get into planes too now
I have been watching your channel for about 8 months now. Based on everything you have said and shown, I asked for a Sport Cub S2 for my 50th bday. I bought a few extra batteries and have been loving it. This plane is what I want to get for my next one. Thank you for the fun, informative and relaxing videos!
I have to say I learned how to fly a Cessna 152 when I was 13 years old and always wanted to become a pilot!!! You two are the reason my wife and I are building flitetest swappables. We are both brand new to the hobby and we are in Prince Edward Island Canada!! We love your videos and have been binge watching you guys and the flitetest channel... thank you so much , we are happy we found you on here just by chance. You two make a wonderful team: Intelligent, talkative, and capable! I am sure your audience loves your constant commentary. It is frustrating when a RUclipsr just shows a plane flying. Thank you for your reviews. They have definitely increased my enjoyment of the hobby. I've been flying RC since about 1970 but your reviews have helped me with evaluating the benefit of the new technology and the amazing new foam airplanes. I bought the Carbon Cub S+ for my 6 year old grandson in Australia and he could handle the controls in beginner mode beside taking off and landing. I think an inexperienced person should use an experienced one to set up the plane. You must have put the landing gear fairing on upside down to tease the audience.
I just maiden mine with flaps installed. It's a nice gentle plane and both takeoffs and landings went well. Landing sensor appears to work great (I don't have one) but it's better to practise landings instead. Anyway thanks for sharing your as always entertaining videos.
I’m in the “I wouldn’t have gotten into the hobby if not for the technology.” camp. I love my Carbon Cub S2. Installed the optional flaps today hope to try them tomorrow. Might make a good video for your channel. :)
Good to see this. Ordered for my Habu a couple weeks ago. The LAS is on back order, but due sometime in November. You guys gave me a little insight on how it works. Thanks.
The wheel pants add rigidity to the landing gear to reduce bending of the landing gear. You can help keep them on by using mini tie wraps but eventually they break. I made a pair from some aluminum off of an old CPU cooling fan, tie wrapped them on and they work great. Just added landing lights to help visibility in the fall weather. Thanks for all you two do!
Thank GOD for safe mode. I like flying after a few adult beverages and safe mode has saved me multiple times. I got my Aeroscout stuck in a huge tree last week and had to use a chainsaw to get my plane back.
AWESOME beginner plane!! I would like to have the choice of whether or not to use landing assist. NOW, speaking as an OLD-TIMER, I can use ALL of the ASSIST I can get!! GREAT SHOW SAYLORS and thanks for the honest sharing!! 💟👍😘
I first tried my hand at model aircraft flying back when you had planes on two wires 50 years ago! It was disaster on the first flight! I now have this Carbon Cub and I bought ALL the options (LAS, GPS,etc.) I would have NOT been enticed to purchase it if had didn't have these options. I'm hoping my second attempt at model aircraft works better than my first! (I have managed to accumulate 10,000+ hours at the controls of real airplanes between my two model aircraft attempts!)
As a total noob, I got this plane partially because of the "training wheels" / Safe mode (I don't have landing assist though). For me, it reduces the chance of spending a lot of $$ (to me), then breaking it before enjoying it. I only have a few flights, but love it. Landing w/o landing assist has been easy, even for a noob like me.
It is a good beginner plane. I'm glad they have removed the GPS that the S+ version had. A wrong command to the GPS made me crash into a tree where the plane lived for three days. :D Now test the assist on water. :)
My suggestion is to purchase the Carbon Cub 2 with gps and landing assist first. Then the Habu BNF. You can bind it to the same transmitter and if you want, swap the landing Assist over.
I have the S+ and love it. I fly with the GPS turned off as it takes forever to figure out where it is so I can fly. I also like the beginner mode as if you let go of the sticks, the plane goes level and flys on (no crash). So, if I am in mode 2 or 3 and have a problem, I just click it to mode 1 and the plane saves itself. I never could get the auto landing function to work - may be a GPS or compass problem. Still afraid to try loops or rolls but will someday. Nice first plane though. I get 6 minutes of flight time on a battery.
Hey that’s awesome Jim! Glad you like your S+! Yeah the GPS does take more time to set up than without, so we understand wanting to just get up in the air to fly quicker! That’s why we like electric over gas and glow! Happy Flying Jim! 👍😀⚓️
Like you I need this information and video! I have been scouring RUclips for someone to demonstrate how the heck the GPS and airfield fence work, BUT no such luck? Very frrustrating.
"And you can instantly return to steady flight using Panic Recovery with the push of a button in any flight mode." That is in the descrpition on the HobbyZone page for the Carbon Cub S2. "Panic Recovery mode at the push of a button to prevent loss of control and crashes" is on the Horizon Hobby page for this plane. The PDF manual says "Button I operates PANIC mode when pressed" on page 7 but you have to assign AUX1 to button I. Later on it says "At any time release both sticks to activate panic recovery mode for self-leveling."
Great review again. I really have been enjoying everything you have reviewed. Very honest, and you do a great job explaining things. Wish you much success in the future.
The elevator down issue is because you need to set it up with the plane level, not sitting on the landing wheels. Otherwise it will have no down elevator except for advanced mode/only as3x mode. That way the flight controller is set at its regular level flight, as opposed to a tail dragger that has the motor pointing to the sky when sitting on a table. You put a pile of books under the rear wheels to level it and then Bind it and do all that stuff again..
I'm old and I like the new technology It makes it easier for people to get into the hobby and a lot less expensive for newcomers. I don't fly with it but I think it's a great progression for the hobby, it also makes the hobby more attractive to people that are interested in getting started.
The panic recovery is simple flipping the top left toggle (flight modes) to beginner and the plane recovers. This obviously only works when you are in intermediate or advanced mode to start with. I've used that action several times to save myself from crashing while practicing in intermediate mode flight. And the landing gear skirts issue, I used 2 extra small clear zip ties after drilling small wholes in the skirt and securing to the wire gear. (Learned that from another experienced RC U-tuber online).
I dug a little and realized there is an additional "recovery" that will "auto land" the plane if it loses signal. It basically spirals down to the ground till it hits the ground. Better than just flying away! Thats what I was trying to get it to do in this video.
I see a lot of people asking if this is a good first plane. yes it is. It was my first plane about 5 years ago. It's slow and floaty. With safe, it's very hard to crash. The GPS is kind of a gimmick though in my opinion. I always disabled it. But the plane is a great flyer. I still have mine. Get this or the apprentice.
I went ahead and got this one w gps. I got a aeroscout s2 1.1m and the 1280 mm easy trainer. Love me some pushers. I don’t have the ground sensor but I have a dx6e. Will it work w this 6 channel?
Great vid guys! I absolutely love your enthusiasm for the sport! Question: Will the LAS be easy to install on my brand new AreoScout 1.1 meter? I'm a complete newbie knowing next to nothing about electronics. Thank you once again for your much needed information...Happy Flying!
I have got to quit watching this channel. I am so close to pulling a trigger on something like this one. It looks like a great first plane for me. As Always, May God Bless you and yours!
Morning Nate & Amy, I just got my CC S2, on the first power up of the Tx and plane, the elevator went to full down, the rudder went to full right and the ailerons went to full left roll,,,,,,,, the front LED started flashing red & blue,,,,,,,, the Tx wouldn't control anything, I looked in the owners manual, no mention of the front LED pattern other than flight mode colors, went online and found nothing,,,,,,,, I had nothing to go by and nothing to lose so I tried rebinding I did that and all's well now, these are supposed to be bound at the factory, Still looking forward to first flight, kinda waiting for the other two module's to show up, thought they came with the PNP kit, you should mention some of this about the kit in your unboxing and assembly video, also mention that if you follow the instructions rather than trying to guess how it goes together the project will go along better. Did you do an unboxing and assembly review?
Thank you that video helped a lot. The technology is the reason I am trying to get back into the hobby tried it years ago and just got frustrated but I think the technology will help me out a lot along with your videos. Thanks👍
Really like your video on this plane, I've always been into cars and trucks which my wife has no interest in but she's showing a lot of interest in flying after watching some of your video's with me, so it looks like we're going to invest in one of these.
I have never flown an RC plane and would love to get one but I am scared to cos I don’t no what I am doing 😕. I am always watching RCsaylors on RUclips. You are so honest on what to buy and not what to buy. Thanks for all your videos 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️
I have a carbon cub s+ and the wheel pants would pop off. Ended up drilling a few holes in them and fastening them with zip ties. They stay on well now.
I have the first version with GPS. It had a bad flight controller in it and was a total nightmare at first. HH sent a replacement controller, and it hasn’t had a single issue since! Great plane with or without the GPS! You should ALWAYS just go ahead and fly the Cub with your pants OFF!!! T-shirt? Land assist is an option on the Habu STS. (vortex generators)
Hi Nate and Abby I had the first version of this with GPS and it worked great, virtual fence, auto land etc. But one day while flying nicely it just turned and went straight ahead across the river never to be seen again. It is somewhere in the Palm Oil Plantation here in Malaysia... HH did stand behind it and sold me a new one for 1/2 price.
It took two new planes before I figured the GPS was defective. I have flown a lot and have two other planes which I have never crashed. My first Carbon Cub took off, made a gentle right turn (in SAFE) and nosed straight down. I bought another, moved the GPS from the first to the new plane and the same thing happened. Since I own several other planes (4 channel) and have never came close to crashing either, the only thing I can figure is the gps somehow took over and cause the crash. I have been flying for years and was going to use this to help others learn to fly. Now I am out around $550.
@@TheRcSaylors I rebuilt the Cub and discovered the left wing aileron was stripped. So either the GPS was bad or the servo was bad. Either way I'm out a brand new airplane. I have glued it up and hope it will fly again as soon as I replace the aileron.
@@TheRcSaylors We have solved the mystery. I upgraded from the RTF transmitter to the new NX6. You know, download the BNF templet from Horizon and bind you plane and you are ready to go! That worked on all my planes except the Cub. It seems there was a programing error in the templet. While on phone support we found the error and changing one simple setting and the rebuilt plane flies fine. I did remove the GPS as the wrong setting combined with the GPS likely caused the crash.
wow that Plane is awesome even I could fly it and I'm hopeless try as i might I've never enjoyed a flight yet but i really think even I could fly that plane thank you
Bought this little jewel a couple months ago. Probably 35 to 40 flights in to it now. Ripped all the ''technology'' out of it as soon as I got it home. Not real happy in high winds but flies beautifully overall.
Carl Fulton. Appreciate your posts. They’re accurate info. I have a question on CC S2. I have GPS, LAS & Flap upgrades. Have 3 positions working on the Flaps, Not sure LSI is working. Plugged into Channel 7 on Flight Controller. And it is facing the right direction. The light on the windscreen seems wrong. It flashes green and red (not purple). Is this an error in setup? Any idea what is the correct install? If flap setup is of interest I’ll share what I did. It is not obvious and HS instructions are pathetic. At least to a novice.
I'm a old guy that build planes many years ago with no luck. A few months ago I bought the Arrma Granite and last week the typhon. Love them both, but my heart lies with airplanes! What is the best trainer for me to buy?
This plane by far. This was my first about 5 years ago. I crashed it and it just took it. It's so slow and floaty and easy to fly. And in safe mode you can't really crash hard.
when i was in to the hobby they did not even have buddy box. foam planes were not even a thing. we did a lot of whar they call putting them back into kit form.
I have been enjoying rc scale model wooden boats for awhile but I have always wanted an airplane. I've never flown an rc plane, so I have been looking at trainers. I think I've found my first plane.
The technology is ridiculous for the beginner but the best possible tool to save you money and absolutely understand what you are doing is buying real flight simulator, I swear it works, I can fly anything now and it's super fun
For the record, we have the gps. It worked fine a few times then woudn’t boot up one day and wouldn’t allow the plane to fly. So it wasn’t the setup in our case, it was a problem that developed after a few succesful flights on the same setup. Once we removed the gps the plane has been flawless and we never missed having a gps.
That seems like a nice airplane. If someone asked me which fixed-wing RC plane they should start with, I'd tell them to get the Sport Cub S from Hobbyzone. I have nearly 20 airplanes, but I have to say that little thing helped me learn how to do stuff. I'm still working on it, and I still love that little dude. I'm not very good at it even now, but I enjoy flying the Sport Cub S. I can even get it around my back yard under the canopy of oaks. :)
do you recommend the gps module? have you ever lost the radio signal with the stock transmitter? I would only install the module in case of signal loss
I started the RC hobby last December and now have 2 RC vehicles. Redcat Everest 10 (Crawler) Losi Rock Rey (Rock Racer). Now I would like to try airplanes. I like everything I'm seeing about the Carbon Cub S2 so this may be my first RC plane. What is the largest battery that will fit?
I have this plane. Version one of course. It was my second plane. Many crashes and many repairs later it still flies. The thing is, if you use landing assist, you never learn how to land and then when you do try to land by yourself, you may crash.
The GPS just stopped it from going past a certain distance called a geo-fence it could be set to automatically come back or stay within a certain distance but you still have to fly the plane I think there is also a button to remember where it took off it will land at that point automatically also that’s pretty cool
Yes, there is a plane that can do that and it is awesome! However, this plane, as is, does not have the GPS unit installed. It can be added later if you wish. Happy Flying 😁👍😎⚓
I've only been flying successfully for about 6 years. Finally learned building FT scratch builds. I still scratch build a little but now prefer store bought planes in the pnf version. My budget is usually under $200. When you start adding all the extra safe electronics the price really goes up fast. I don't mind the help but can't really justify the price. I guess I prefer dumb planes unless someone wants to donate free parts...
Efliye has some AMAZING BNF planes under $200, and they are even cheaper if you use your own RX. We feel the same way. FT planes are fun for a week or two but if they get wet or you crash them, just build a new one. Planes like this can fly 1,000 times with a dab or two of hot glue 👍😎⚓
An interesting video. One aircraft I own and fly the Echine Mustang and find the technology on that is a very useful too and has got me out of trouble several times.
Those are called vortex generators. They don't slow the plane down, they increase the speed of the air going over the wing, thus increasing lift and decreasing stall speed.
All good to help reduce crashing generally, but manual landing should still be practiced and ready to be done in case it fails. Pretty impressive for a tail dragger in any case. It may help beginners well but doesn't seem very useful for those who know how to fly and ride wind gusts.
No one seems to do a video (not even Horizon) on setting the virtual fence! Can you do a detailed video on a total set up even going through the compass calibration?
I owned an earlier generation SAFE technology airplane as my first and I would say yes. The little computer thing makes these excellent beginner planes.
I just got this today and I found out it’s a really good plane. But some wind will push it a bit but with the features for beginner mode limits the banking.
Ok I am a micro copter guy, got some large stuff but do have preference for WL toys V911 size, xeidas 9958, E119,E129 As far as tech in the hobby goes I have been in last 6 years or so, it has leaps and bounds from 2013 I like it, however for the new pilots it is awesome.
Nate, I have a serious question if you don't mind. If for some reason thee carbon s lost signal, will the virtual fence still work? I lost my little blue sport cub because my transmitter batteries died. The cub went full throttle n flew to egypt or turkey idk. I ordered the carbon cub s And it WI be here tomorrow hopefully. Thanks in advance.
Good question! If you have the GPS module installed, YES it will save the plane and return if the transmitter signal is lost. Ill have to test it to see what happens if you do not have the GPS module installed. Best advice though, is to plan on putting in fresh AA batteries about twice a year, minimum. Hope that never happens to you again!
@@TheRcSaylors I think the batteries they sent for it were crap then I only flew it a few times. What battery brand do you recommend for the transmitter?
@@roadkill5838 Buy some Panasonic Eneloop rechargeables. Save you 💰 in the long run and they last longer. Just charge every time you're done and no worries again.
I am looking to buy my 1st plane soon but I don't have a huge budget for RC so I will only be able to buy 1 for the next few years probably. Looking for recommendations so far between Carbon Cub S2 and E-Flite Valiant.

Now put the floats on and see if the landing assistant works on the water?
Awesome video guy's!
It is a good beginner plane. I'm glad they have removed the GPS that the S+ version had. A wrong command to the GPS made me crash into a tree where the plane lived for three days. :D Now test the assist on water. :)
awesome plane and great flying guys
Thanks Island!!
So cool where this hobby is headed
This is gonna bring so many more people into a great hobby!
That’s good and a little scary. Not everyone can be trusted to fly responsibly...
@@bleckybob but they learn
My suggestion is to purchase the Carbon Cub 2 with gps and landing assist first. Then the Habu BNF. You can bind it to the same transmitter and if you want, swap the landing Assist over.
The Cub is great for the disabled, as I am. The panic button use to be the bind button. A Nam vet
It looks like the wheel pants are on upside down, unless you like bell bottoms.
Ha! I noticed that too
I have the S+ and love it.
How bout the virtual fence, autoland, and circling home? That’s what newbies like me want to see.
Like you I need this information and video! I have been scouring RUclips for someone to demonstrate how the heck the GPS and airfield fence work, BUT no such luck? Very frrustrating.
I just ordered this from your link. First RC plane. No experience, hope I made a good choice. ✊🏽
Great first RC plane with no experience! You got this 👍 And thanks for the support 😎⚓
Wow it lands by it self
Great review again. I really have been enjoying everything you have reviewed. Very honest, and you do a great job explaining things. Wish you much success in the future.
The elevator down issue is because you need to set it up with the plane level, not sitting on the landing wheels. Otherwise it will have no down elevator except for advanced mode/only as3x mode. That way the flight controller is set at its regular level flight, as opposed to a tail dragger that has the motor pointing to the sky when sitting on a table.
You put a pile of books under the rear wheels to level it and then Bind it and do all that stuff again..
You have to install the optional GPS module to get Failsafe, Geofence, Holding Pattern, and Returnto homewith automatic landing.
That's some really cool technology! I'm going to teach my wife to fly RC and I think this is going to help her initially.
Looking at ad for this, it says it does have a panic button, it is shared with the bind button. I'd like to know how it works as well.
I'm old and I like the new technology It makes it easier for people to get into the hobby and a lot less expensive for newcomers. I don't fly with it but I think it's a great progression for the hobby, it also makes the hobby more attractive to people that are interested in getting started.
Yeah, I found it interesting to watch a video dedicated to one feature.
When all else fails, read the manual p.23, 'press to release' :-) ...just messin' with 'ya ...have a great week, nice flight...
I’m buying this plane now ; because of you ❤
Happy Flying!! 👍💯😎⚓️
Panic mode is the bind button. Only works in expert mode. Rights the plane and gives you time to switch back to beginner.
Morning Nate & Amy, I just got my CC S2, on the first power up of the Tx and plane, the elevator went to full down, the rudder went to full right and the ailerons went to full left roll,,,,,,,, the front LED started flashing red & blue,,,,,,,, the Tx wouldn't control anything, I looked in the owners manual, no mention of the front LED pattern other than flight mode colors, went online and found nothing,,,,,,,,
I had nothing to go by and nothing to lose so I tried rebinding I did that and all's well now, these are supposed to be bound at the factory,
Still looking forward to first flight, kinda waiting for the other two module's to show up, thought they came with the PNP kit, you should mention some of this about the kit in your unboxing and assembly video, also mention that if you follow the instructions rather than trying to guess how it goes together the project will go along better.
Did you do an unboxing and assembly review?
Thank you that video helped a lot. The technology is the reason I am trying to get back into the hobby tried it years ago and just got frustrated but I think the technology will help me out a lot along with your videos. Thanks👍
Really glad to hear you are giving it another shot Rob 😀👍⚓😎
Really like your video on this plane, I've always been into cars and trucks which my wife has no interest in but she's showing a lot of interest in flying after watching some of your video's with me, so it looks like we're going to invest in one of these.
I have never flown an RC plane and would love to get one but I am scared to cos I don’t no what I am doing 😕. I am always watching RCsaylors on RUclips. You are so honest on what to buy and not what to buy. Thanks for all your videos 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧❤️
The landing gear covers are on upside down. Your welcome
I have a carbon cub s+ and the wheel pants would pop off. Ended up drilling a few holes in them and fastening them with zip ties. They stay on well now.
This plane will do some really nice snap rolls too!
New to RC (kinda) I have a Goosky S2 and a flywing FW450 V3 that I never crash thanks to new tech so yes its a good thing.
I’m coming from a blade 230S. Are planes hard to get a hang of?
@@brianwood4170 not really.
Would this be a better beginner plane, or would you recommend the apprentice?
I to like to know
I have the first version with GPS.
How is the DXS transmitter? Can you bind it with most other BNF aircraft? Is it a true 7-channel radio?
Hi Nate and Abby
I had the first version of this with GPS and it worked great, virtual fence, auto land etc.
Did you calibrate the GPS like we demonstrate in our first video of this airplane, exactly?
As a relatively new pilot I can't imagine flying a wooden plane with no gyro as my first flight. That would be terrible!
:-) wow, never thought I would see auto landing in my life. Great job you guys.
:-) Thank you!! :-)
Is it just me or are your wheel pants upside down if so have done that to prevent damage to the fuselage?
Would you recommend to install the flaps before installing the LAS? What range of batteries have to tested in this plane?
Awesome Nate like the plane and enjoying your videos and looking great in the air 👍😎❤️ awesome thanks for the great video 👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎 video
Vortex generators on top of the wing
when i was in to the hobby they did not even have buddy box. foam planes were not even a thing. we did a lot of whar they call putting them back into kit form.
I have been enjoying rc scale model wooden boats for awhile but I have always wanted an airplane. I've never flown an rc plane, so I have been looking at trainers. I think I've found my first plane.
i just bought this plane today, from horizon hobbies, total was $370 , can’t wait and i hope it’s worth it:) my first plane too
The technology is ridiculous for the beginner but the best possible tool to save you money and absolutely understand what you are doing is buying real flight simulator, I swear it works, I can fly anything now and it's super fun
Hey cool sounds like a winner for me I just need tons of practice 😮will be investing this unit 👍🏻🙈
This is so cool!
The technology in this thing is amazing 😀👍⚓😎
Great video as always guys. But you're (pants) landing gear trim is upside down, lol.
Also, vortex generators are cool!
We actually prefer the Bell Bottom look 😉🤣😂⚓😎
Does anyone know if you can use the Las on other planes or is it only recommend for the 3 planes. Can you install it on let's say a EDF f18, or a6.
Inspirational.
You had the wheel pants on upside down.....might have been an issue with breaking...
We did this is sort of an Easter Egg to see who would notice 😉 Just trying to bring back the 60s and 70s Bell Bottoms! 😂🤣🕺
Those aren't actually called wheel pants... wheel pants cover the wheels, not the landing gear struts.
do you recommend the gps module? have you ever lost the radio signal with the stock transmitter? I would only install the module in case of signal loss
You guys are so cute together! You are so lucky to have a wife that likes to do this kind of stuff with you and have fun! Rare find!
Is was thinking the same. My wife couldn't care less... Abby is quite cute - her enthusiasm is great.
Hello friend, how much range does the dxs radio have with the receiver?
Another awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Love you both
You've still got the landing gear fairings on upside-down... the wide end goes next to the fuselage! 🙄
Thank you, wondered if anyone else noticed that too.
They’re still living in the 70’s, when everyone pants were flared.😁
Nobody asked you
I have this plane.
Would you recommend this plane or like a sport cub to someone who never flown a plane before.
