  • Happy new year!! I'm back with a video on the Carbon Cub S+. I go over the features of this plane and take it out for my first flight of 2019! I've only been flying for about 5 months, so this is a beginner rc pilot's perspective.
This plane comes with SAFE+ technology. So along with the 3 flight modes (beginner/intermediate/experienced) it also has a GPS module that can perform a self land, holding pattern, and virtual fence. I've seen mixed reviews of the GPS on RUclips so I decided to try it with the GPS turned OFF, especially since it requires a lot of open space (which I don't have at my flying field).

This is definitely a great looking cub! After flying it a few times, I'd say this plane is probably not the best for someone's first plane - maybe 2nd or 3rd. It's a tail dragger so it's a bit squirrely on the runway during taxi and takeoffs, it is not the best lander (bounces around a bit, even with the big wheels), and also has a tendency to stall during slow flight and requires good throttle control. The plane has optional flaps, but requires a 7ch transmitter and an extra servo (which I ended up installing).
Hope this beginner's perspective review was helpful! Happy flying.

I just got one of these yesterday. I'm brand new to flying as of 2 weeks ago with a Sport Cub. Today, my second day of owning the Carbon Cub, a spectator asked me how many *years* I've been flying. "Maybe 1.5 hours." I was just happy to not crash the thing. Beginner mode is amazing.

It's really great to see a young lady take to the air in this fantastic hobby of, RC.
Your cute little plane flys well, however it is subject to the wind, due to it's light weight.
I'm a long time RCer, going back 20 years plus. I fly Pattern planes, and extreme aerobatic types. My pattern is Focus Sport, with the fuse at 72", and the wings at 65". Weight at 12.5 lbs. I built it 8 years ago, and it flys like it's on a rail. For aerobatics, I have come down to a German foam plane, the Hottrigger 1400. Flys great as well.
I have my FAA Private license as well, and have owned full sized. My last was a Grumman Yankee. Look them up. I do so love aviation. I'm also a retired Medical Engineer.
Best to you in you pursuit of flying, but watch out. This could lead to you wanting to get your own FAA license, then next comes your own Cessna 152, or such.
Need any advice, or questions, just ask.

You had plenty of space for GPS mode. I fiy in a field 100 ft wide, 200 ft long surrounded by trees and loaded with hawks. Makes for very challenging flying and I'm far from a pro. Good video.

Isn’t that one that can self-take- off and self-land ,I think with GPS it has a geo- fence

Yes it has self-take- off, self-land, and GPS it has a geofence with 3 flight patterns, also dual rates.

@john harris Hi John, yes this would make a good 1st plane it's just the set up each time at the field with GPS I found it is so easy to get it wrong a lot of steps and you don't know you have set it wrong. The landing and take-off is spot on just apply right rudder on take-off to offset the torque of the motor which you can see in this video. I hope this helps

That plane is made for off road. Take a few steps and use the grass for take off and landing. The tires want to bounce and your landing it on a hard surface. Please do it, the plane deserves a second chance.

Nice cub, good landings, I have the gps on my birds, im thinking of disconnecting them. If you crunch a foamy, or crack one, you can usually glue em back together using toothpics, and foam cure glue. Acrylic paint hides a multiple of sins. Great Job RC Girl!

Than re built it and gave it away at a indoor fly that we where having, Some 11 year boy wanted to learn how to fly , but didnt have the finances to get involved , So me and my buddy gave him the plane and a older spektrum radio and battery. He parents got a little teary eyed . Its all about getting the younger generation into the hobby. Keep on flying your doing an excellent job. Stay safe

Its a lovely plane. However, I disagree with you about turning off the GPS for a learner or novice pilot. The geo-fencing is an important safety option. Having had a fly-away myself I leave the geo-fencing on maximum which allows me a large area to fly in while ensuring that if I do get too far away I can't lose the plane. I haven't found issues with take off and landing, but I have not activated the flaps as I only have the DX6 transmitter. Altogether a lovely, easy plane to fly and apart from the complexity of the initial programming, an ideal second plane (though my fifth plane lol).

@@FalconWing1813 Auto land should not do that, unless you do not allow it to lock onto the GPS location before flying. I have many quads that have this feature, in the early days fly-off was attributing to a lack of knowledge and being impatient.

Happy New Year to you, and thank you for a nice video as always!
Are the bush-pilot tires made of hard plastic? Maybe softer rubber tires will make the landings softer, but maybe softer rubber tires in the same size come with a higher weight penalty? Nice acrobatic capacities at slow speed, just what I want in a plane of this type.
Good it is lightweight and have a strong motor, it makes it easier to get airborne fast on a rough runway, this is a plane for me I think, your video convinced me, thank you!
    Cheers.

    • @RCGirl
      @RCGirl  5 лет назад +1

They are not hard plastic but they aren't super squishy either. I'd say like one of those hand exercise ball type foams (does that make sense!? haha). I think the Timber has better landing gear/tires for sure, and is easier to land/take off. Holds a line better. But this plane is still super fun.

That's all it takes. I think this video recomendation falls way short of the plane's potential with beginners and experienced. Calibrate the compass FIRST. Then, just wait for it to initialize, home lock with the bind button, and you're off! I think the GPS function is fantastic for beginners. The geofence feature is great to keep planes from getting too far out and beginners losing orientation and then the plane. You've always got the "Hold Pattern" PANIC option in case SHTF. I just started back in after decades. I'm flying the CC S+ everyday for the last 3 weeks. It's a GREAT beginner plane and full of fun on 'experienced' mode, too. Now, on to build the big brother Hangar 9 Carbon Cub 15cc in Electric.

Not only are the directions wrong with regard to those screws, they are also wrong on the installation of the GPS. The cub manual says there is a “pocket” with a “lid” and there is not. There is a place you can sit the GPS module on top of the receiver, but nothing to secure it in place, so I guess you have to tape it. In order to find the GPS plug in the receiver you have to wrench the receiver out of the plane cause its mounted with double sided tape, not velcro or a strap. Forget trying to reach technical support. They claim on the website to have a phone support but... no number to call anywhere. If you try to chat, you’ll never get through, but you will get told to try again later after waiting for 15 minutes. If you want to email support you cannot because they don’t have an email address. They do have a form but it is limited in characters to very few so there is not enough space to explain what your problem is. There is no manual either at Horizon or Spektrum for either the GPS module or the receiver. I did buy this model, GPS and a transmitter but I’ll never buy from them again. With ZERO customer support, incorrect manuals and no online support, no RUclips videos this company has no respect for customers. Just the worst post sale support and documentation I’ve every experienced. It’s truly a fraud to accept people’s money and then provide inaccurate documentation, no documentation and no access to support.

The Apprentice is much simpler than this plane. The GPS is totally unnessary. Once you learn to fly, its about as useless as SAFE. I havent used SAFE in my Apprentice in 3 years. Its just for beginners. Once you learn to fly, all those extras do not make the extra cost worth it.

This comment is coming in late (2+ years after your post) so I don't know if you will see it. I really love your videos but was sorry that you didn't report more on the GPS features. I bought this model for my 6 year old grandson because of those amazing features. I am surprised that you didn't use the GPS features, although they are definitely tricky to set up. Set up properly the geofence feature is a great boon to beginners: you have three different options, based on the size and type of field you are flying at. If the plane flies beyond the programmed boundary it takes over control, turns the plane around and rocks the wings when it returns control to you. That solves the problem of loosing the plane by having it fly out of sight. It also has an auto land feature which makes the plane fly downwind and make a landing approach into the wind, landing very close to where it took off from (assuming you took it off into the wind). The trick is that there should not be any trees in the pattern that it returns by (I found I had to quickly switch it into advanced mode to make it over trees it was going to fly into. After that it landed perfectly, hands off!). My grandson lives in Australia so I left the instructions with his Grandpa down under to help him with the set-up. In Australia a cricket field is large enough to fly with no concern for trees with the small geofence if you take off from the bowling strip in the center. Even though Darcy had never flown I could hand the controls to him in beginner mode and he flew it successfully! I do recommend that a beginner fly it with an experienced pilot, however, to make sure the GPS is set up and working properly. I understand that they have come out with a new version where the GPS is optional but it includes a landing sensor that in beginner and intermediate mode, makes it impossible to slam into the ground.

Horizon Hobby was so cool when I told them that my cub went haywire and flew away. they had me send a photo of my receipt and what I had left and then they sent me a completely new plane. and it was in my hands in only like 2 weeks. I was very pleased with their customer service. and this plane is very fun and pretty simple if you can pass the exam for the manual. some of the commands are like impossible fatality codes. nevertheless, this is, or was an excellent beginner RC plane.
Im certain my plane flew away into federally restricted no fly zone right towards Hanford Nuclear Plant. I was sure I was going to have the feds at my door( i had all my info on it). captured it all on my gopro too. Tried to chase it for about 5 mins and then lost sight of it.

It's the pilot, not the plane. Just got mine 3 weeks ago and I put 4 2200mah thru it every.single.day doing take-off/landing pattern work. I just bought a used but brand new second one, too! I did the flap mod and added a new DX9 Black Edition for more complex stuff down the road...like the Hangar 9 Carbon Cub I'm about to buy, the big brother to our little CC S+. This is my first R/C plane in 35 years but I'm current in real full size aircraft. Same thing applies in real full size aircraft, don't chop the throttle on short approach and/or dive for the runway threshold or you'll bounce every time and if your fast, you'll go back in the air and risk stall. Always remember and LEARN THIS...You're on the backside of the power curve when landing. Throttle no longer controls speed, the elevator does. The elevator does not control altitude anymore...the THROTTLE does. Keep wings level with ailerons (AS3X does that for you in Beginner/Intermediate). On downwind, just before turning base leg, reduce power to about 15-25% give or take (depends on wind and variables). Control your speed by using the elevator by lowering or raising the nose ever so slightly and control your altitude with throttle. Once on final approach, keep a level to slightly nose up attitude with elevator and oscillate your throttle gently up and down to control your rate of descent on the glide slope. Once within a wing's length of the ground (in ground effect), add a tiny bit of power and relax your up elevator a bit and roll out on the ground. You MUST continue to fly the plane all the way onto the ground. Do not give up flying it once there...especially a taildragger. You may need to apply downward elevator at this point. You must dance with the rudder (and ailerons in X-wind) to keep it from ground looping as she did in this video when the wing tip dragged and the plane spun around. That same thing happens with full size tail draggers....it's just a more expensive mistake! That happens because the center of gravity is behind the main gear as opposed to in front of the mains on a tricycle geared aircraft.

This is a cool ride ! I also taught myself with it . However , LOL.. it’s now time for the 70mm viper it’s a nice stable ride and I’ve never flown a EDF ever !!! I went from this Carbon to the viper. SAFE is a must with first couple flights & I’m now switching it off.

Soooo turn off the GPS which also means that the geo fence is disabled, kinda makes the whole point of the tech in the aircraft redundant, also the only time auto land will come in is if you manually activate it or you lose tx signal completely and it will circle about the take off location at about 70 feet and if the connection is not reestablished within a few minutes then it will try to land.

Supposedly if you run the newest firmware and an ar630 reciever you can run flaps because it has an auxiliary channel and technically is 7 not y channels and you can use a dx or ñx6

  • @danlewis7183

The reason it turns hard left is because of torque steer. If you ease into the throttle while applying rudder as you throttle up you'll maintain a straight take-off. Don't worry, this also happens on normal General aviatio. Planes like the J-3 cub or the Piper PA-18 Super Cub.
Also, on landing, your flaps should be fully applied and you should maintain enough throttle to stay in the air while you hover the runway. Once you are hovering, slowly decrease power and tge plane will kiss the ground gently instead of bouncing.

Emmanuel Butmankiewicz Apprentice STS is much bigger (1.5m wingspan), heavier and more stable. But the battery of Apprentice is 3c 3300 mAh, which is bigger and more expensive than Carbon Cub’s 3c 2200 mAh battery.

I own this plane and use it with my DX8G2 and everything works fine. only one remark. If you switch between the flight modes sometimes it takes some seconds until the flight mode is active. This can in some cases lead to a crash.
The gear is by far to weak. I have made it stronger and the plastic parts on the gear a flipping very easily away, hot glue helps to solve that.

Great advice about not making a GPS airplane your first plane. (unless you enjoy a techy challenge)Yes they can for the most part land themselves but they can't see trees and powerlines when they are trying to line themselves up for final. Pay close attention to the flightpath the plane chooses for itself. You may have to intervene! Like you alluded to there is much more to comprehend when using the GPS features. Keep those instructions! The Apprentice has been around for many years for a very good reason.
I have the old Parkzone Sport Cub S2 version of this plane. It did not come with Safe but it did come with AS3x. A few years back I removed the AR636 Rx and replaced it with a FrSky Rx with telemetry since I hate using timers, and added an Eagletree Guardian. The Guardian works similar to safe but it also allows you to be in a sort of "Safe" mode that auto levels the plane whenever you release the sticks. Even with this mode enabled on the Guardian you can still do Rolls and Loops unlike safe where you have to switch between modes to get the same sort of safety net. I work in a hobby shop and highly recommend the Eagletree Guardian especially for planes without Safe. There are other features as well that will help make 3 D flying easier if that's your cup of tea. You can install one of these in a plane that is not suitable for a beginner and make it much more beginner friendly. (Do not install in a plane that already has Gyro stabilization like AS3x without first replacing the AS3x Receiver I can only imagine that bad things will happen when the AS3x trys to fight the Guardian for Auto leveling and overcoming wind.)
