She is not giving advice she is showing what she loves and enjoys doing. She is creative and doing it her way. If you don't like that she paints it, keep strolling. Use wallpaper that isn’t pre-pasted (doesn’t have glue), and use a mixture of corn starch and water to glue it to the wall. It’s completely removable and very strong. Sometimes peel and stick can still remove your paint, so I’d test a small square and try taking it down after a few weeks before doing an entire wall.

Please please please check your local leasing laws and check thoroughly how your deposit is protected by law but one thing I can say is - do not give them any excuse what so ever. A deposit tribunal will look at that wall with that paper and then after shots when the tenant has moved out! You can kiss your deposit goodbye.

It would be better and cheaper to just paint the damn wall and repaint if you’re using matte black wallpaper. If you were doing a patterned wallpaper, affix sheets of MDF with easily removable screws on the wall to protect the drywall surface first, then add whatever you want for wallpaper. Then unscrew the boards when you leave and patch the holes. Never use sticky stuff.

i am so confused by american renter situations. in germany, we can do everything and anything to rental property. i could paint my walls black. only if i want something bigger done like new tiles or electric work in the walls, i need approval.
if the next renter likes what i did to the flat, i don’t have to change things back. if they need to renovate/modernize the flat after i move out (because i lived there for 20 years and work is due), i don’t need to change anything. if no one likes what i did to the flat, i need to paint over it in a light neutral color like white or beige. no big deal 🤷🏼‍♀️

Contact paper adhesive sticks harder to the paint the older it gets. Peels paint off when you try to remove it. And for sure if the renter or landlord [before you moved in] didn't bother to prep the wall properly before repainting so they could turn the rental around sooner. Short cuts you don't find out until the paint starts chipping when you go to pull off the command strips. Painting is easier, costs the same and if you lightly sand and clean the wall before applying new paint, will last. Plus you have to contend with the texture on the wall when smoothing out the paper. For an accent wall the cost of 7 rolls of contact paper is the same as a gallon of paint.

Another option is using very thin foam board held on walls with command strips and seams between foam boards filled in with caulk or dry wall putty then put peel and stick over that.
Saves u from the sticky residue upon removal from using cheap or off brand peel and stick wallpaper.
