I love the wall slat idea! I am very confused by the decision to cover the backsplash though. They aren't a colour I would pick but they are so beautiful and unique!
...The bad thing about the " Real Backsplash " is ALL THE TEXTURE. I'm not sure why anyone would use that much of a Textured Splashback ,in a Kitchen, because it's not a good idea; you actually w a n t a smoother surface, to keep it clean... This Tile they used is NOT " Kitchen friendly. " so they must have bought it for really cheap. ...; That's the problem with some Companies ( owners of Rentals) and some Landlords.....They just want to do things " cheaply " instead of doing them " Properly" ....Because in the long run, a lot of it doesn't make sense...This backsplash does not make sense.,it is MUCH TOO textured to be in a Kitchen. And the colour is horrible. It makes the Kitchen feel dark ,especially with the paint on the Cabinets. Yes, I have ' first hard experience " ,with picking Tile, cutting Tile, matching a pattern, etc. ,As well as choosing Paint Colours for a Clients Home. So she was desiring to have that " Smooth, Bright Surface " as opposed to the JUNK that was used for this Kitchen Application; I can say , whoever decided to use this HORRIBLE Tile probably figured/ said to themselves..." Oh, it will make the Kitchen look more 'High End : .." ... UHHHMM. NO, it does not.
Tina, so excited for the first video of the year from you. I also appreciate you being real with us. It’s nice to know that everyone has the same issues. It’s also really helpful to see how you pivot and find new options. As a diy newbie, I am really appreciative, so thank you! Can’t wait to see your finished kitchen. I absolutely love what you did with the island. Thank you!!
Ahhhh, I really appreciate this so much. I used to go into videos thinking a had to make everything perfect, but that just isn’t realistic especially when you are trying something out for the first time 👏🏼
I saw a gray kitchen and you saw an empty canvas 💛 so proud of your resilience and changes that you made to our home, love! I know that the final makeover is going to be 🔥
I love the green color on the bottom cabinets and I love the mini frames for the fridge. The brass knobs on the cabinets are definitely an improvement but I think you will still catch on the bottom ones. What I did on my kitchen is to put knobs on the top cabinets and handles on the bottom cabinets (the kind of handle that has no parts that are sticking out and can be caught on anything). The two different kinds of hardware are in the same style/color/material so they coordinate. I love it this way!
Gloss is a lot more forgiving than matt. I used gloss peel and stick white vinyl on my kitchen tiles, and used a hairdryer to soften it into the grooves between the tiles and it looks great! Great makeover x
I think the new slats look incredible! I think they look amazing w/the original cabinet color which actually look like they have a greenish hue on camera - looks like the slats were meant for that kitchen! Not a huge fan of the bright white backsplash or the bright green cabinets & brass knowbs (sorry!) I just think a more sagey green would flow a bit better & a bigger handle at least on the bottom cabinets - but I know renter friendly is often limited...&...you always make it come together Tina...so...can't wait to see part 2~~
You got this girl. My projects literally never go right 😂 I’ve sat on the floor and cried more times than not. But the ending is so worth it and what I’ve learned the most out of anything is not to take any shortcuts, no matter how frustrated or impatient I’m getting, because the project turning out the best is what matters most! You’re doing great. It’s beautiful.
I actually like the original backsplash, I wouldn't change them but let's see what the tiles look like when you finally get them. Love the wall paper on the bottom cabinets and the island panels you placed by the stools. I especially love the gold knobs, it makes it look high end actually and the frames on the fridge are gorgeous, up my alley. Great job, can't wait to see the next video with everything else finished. Great job Tina, so loving your work. You inspire me.
The wooden slates I love love. I have seen this before but always inside someone's house so now I'm going to do this. I was afraid to get this apartment bc the kitchen was so grey and that was the only thing wrong with it. Now that I see how different I can make it I'm going to definitely do this idea. Also I did like the previous tile print better but I understand why you chose the white bc I'm not really a modern style person either. Thank you.
Cool! the makeover appreciate the creativity in turning a seemingly bland kitchen into a visually stunning and renter-friendly environment, making the video both inspiring and practical for anyone looking to spruce up their living space.
You can command strip 16th inch plywood to the walls where the black splashes and mortar and tile right over it and just caulk around the edges. Or use tiny nails in the grout lines. that’s the best option and take it with you when you leave and fill in the blanks.
I did this in my old house and I had shaker style cabinets. I ended up doing the inset part of the shaker cabinet doors and it turned out really good. I also used auto wrap vinyl. I love watching your videos and finding inspiration for our house we just had built ❤
I live in a 1950-60's era 1 bed apartment. The 4" square ⬜ pink tile at 40" from the floor,as well as the surround of the shower. Couldn't handle all that pink. Took white plastic peel n stick /contact paper around the interior of the shower. Still see tile shapes, vaguely the color but a whole lot more relaxing to my eyes. Great job so far on the makeover.🥶🖤🔔👍
14:41 Contact paper: I would cut a pattern first before peelinig the backing & sticking it on the tiled backsplash - bottom first, moving up. Just a theory as I have no experience in this. Brushed brasson green 🤩
I just watched your video from two years ago doing a kitchen update so I had to look at your channel and see if you kept the kitchen and looks like you have moved and now giving your new kitchen some charm.I am a new sub and look forward to seeing more of your videos!
WOW! WOW! WOW! The slat paneling just is VA-VA-VOOM! Amazes me how one little change can just elevate a room! Couldn't you have placed a tiny trim around at least at the top on the paper just underneath the cabinets to hide the unevenness? Painted white-ish it would have corrected the unevenness and blended into the contact paper. The teeny pic frames too cute and great idea! I should do that with my magnets so they more classy than just a magnet - more of a picture! Love the green!! Enjoy your day and have a fab week!! xxoo
Omgosh, I can't even fathom how much work taking off the contact paper is going to take when removing it😅 Looks stunning thus far, so absolutely worth the work for future Tina😊
Tina I think if you spray a water/Dawn combination on the tiles, you give yourself the ability to adjust the contact paper. I can’t remember if it is a 50/50 split but I am certain you can research.
How easily the island cover up went with command strips shook, the green contact paper on the cabinets SHOOK, the little frames?? on the fridge??? SHOOOOK. Also whoever left the bottom of the island like that and installed those knobs.... jail immediately. Also also I think we can all agree that even tho the kitchens not finished we're just happy you posted (':
Tina you are so awesome you are like a professional designer who teaches a lot of different decors, your color choices and great I can keep on watching more and more videos to get some great ideas from you thanks for sharing this important video with us subscribers ❤❤❤it
I love the panel on the front of the island. It really adds some texture and interest to that area. I'm wondering if the "tile" will melt in the heat behind the stove. Maybe you could leave that area alone and add a simple trim around the real tile that covers the transition to the white "tile" on either side.
Love the green contact paper on the cabinets. My cabinets are from the 80’s and are in bad shape. I can’t afford to have them painted. This contact paper might be an option for me. There is a groove cut into the doors. I don’t know how that will affect the contact paper. Your kitchen is looking great.
I did the contract paper over tile in my last apartment and loved how it looked. It really just looked like tile. You just have to go really slow and be meticulous. It took me a while but it totally works and is definitely the cheapest option. It's easier to use the bottom as a guide and then use a blade to clean up the top.
Can I ask… was it easier to remove the contact paper and tile when you left your apartment? Did you have to use a heat gun to pull everything up? I was thinking to do this so I don’t mess up the wall
@@asiadivine4010 it depends what you put it over. If it's over existing tile then your might not even need a heat gun (I didn't use one and it came off easily). That being said a heat gun can make it faster if you have one lying around
That panelling is amazing. I would love to see you paint some plants onto the odd tile on the splash backs, think it will really tie in with the green. I also think the light fitting looks nice but doesn't put out enough light and doesn't seem like your style. I'm with you on the grey, all these people rave over it on decorating pages but I find it so blah. You will put your flair on it Tina and make it lovely.
I’m both a landlord and a renter. As a landlord, I would be very leery of allowing stick-on tiles and contact paper because I personally have not found either that actually come off cleanly. Using command hooks is good, however. As a renter, I swapped out the hardware (I brought one of my old pulls to the store to check width of holes). This quickly and inexpensively changed the look from painful (thin) dark brass to comfortable (thicker and rounded) brushed nickel. I also added color through hand towels, accessories, and a framed painting on one wall (it greets me whenever I walk into the kitchen).
Tina, I love the green and the brass knobs! It brings such warmth into that sterile feeling kitchen. Did you ever consider putting paintable contact paper on the insets of the upper cabinets and doing the linen paint treatment. I think that would be gorgeous with the green❤
Yay for the first video of 2024 😍 Those old knobs would drive me insane! The new ones look much nicer anyway so a fantastic swap ☺️ Excited to see the final reveal and the DIYs but it’s looking so good already 😍👏🏻
The green contact paper looks great on those cupboards, it's too bad you can't do the top ones in something too. The brass knobs look so much better than the black but I'm going to tell you, I have that kind of knob and I get caught on them all the time. I would have gone for a C-shape or a cup pull on the bottom. Looking forward to seeing the whole makeover. Happy New Year!
I love the paneling! The green peel and stick tiles would have looked so nice with the grey cabinets and wood paneling. I think the white is just too white IMO. But it’s all trial and error. Love your channel you give great inspo!!
I was wondering if you could use the wood slats on the upper cabinets too, I feel there is a lot going on now in colours, styles and materials. Also, the grey backplash might look great when the cabinets have a different colour/style. The white peel and stick tiles give a very stark contrast.
Happy New Year, Tina and Brian! I’m in love with the two-tone kitchen! The decorative slat wall panel looks amazing. Can't wait to see the final look. 😊
Love your gray kitchen. It's so zen. Those wood panels have been used by DIYers since last year. Lone Fox made a rounded bookcase, he used the Billy bookcase, the year before last. It came out beautifully. Also, in 2024, stress less. It's just DIY and we're here for it!
Love the island! I think it's all going to turn out nice. And a tip regarding the knobs & pulls: keep them in the room where you took them out from (in your case kitchen). Otherwise you are running a risk of not remembering which storage box or location you put them in. Don't ask how I know this... 😔
new subbed!!!! you are amazing with the DIYing!!!! Me and my family will be moving soon and you are just giving me ideas and just giving me life as to how I can customize and truly make the new place a home we truly love! I've been binging since I came across your channel!
The kitchen looks so good so far! I think the peel and stick would've worked great. I would have suggested making sure it's slightly larger than you need it and trim the excess from the top and bottom. Also, to use a blowdryer to help it set into the texture of the grout lines and tiles. Either way, using the blow dryer will help a ton with the upper cabinets. I find that it does great sealing the corners, too.
I personally loved the kitchen just the way it was. But that’s my style. I really liked the slats on the island With command strips. Great hack that looks amazing!
Hey Tina! Love the "insta-panel" on the island! Would have loved to see you try a painting technique on the paintable contact paper backsplash before covering it up w/ the peel-n-stick.
Is the tile paintable? Maybe paint a design or mural to incorporate the green more into the main parts of the kitchen. You did a great job adding the contact paper to the lower cabinets and brass knobs/pulls are always a good move. Looking forward to part 2 to see how you pull everything together.
You can spray contact paper and tiles with water to keep from sticking too fast. It will not remove stickiness and you'll have more time to put exactly in the right spot. 😉
The wood is remarkably beautiful! I’m going to take your inspiration and use it on a wall in my bedroom. I was going to paint the wall black and then attack store bought strips of wood, but this is such a better idea. ❤
I love it!!!! But I also really liked the green backsplash option 😍😍😍😍 But I agree that for your space white was a better choice 🥰🕺🏻🕺🏻🕺🏻 cant wait for the next part!
it does look much brighter, well done. I use my fridge and magnets for my birthday and Christmas or other cards easy to display and remove.the gold knobs are pretty but you can get stuck on them too ;-) sticking and smoothing contact paper or plastic works best if you spray the surface with water and with a squidgy you can push excess out, not sure if contact paper is actual paper, but it looks like plastic and a friend of mine even soaks the whole roll in a tub of water. I like the green and maybe your landlord will say you can leave it when you move as it looks so much nicer?
It's so funny to me that you haven't seen the wood slats done before. In the Netherlands they have been popular for years now, half the houses in my neighborhood has them somewhere in the house. Still love them though, I'm actually still looking for a place in my own home to put them 😛Just feels like USA is behind on interior design trends ;-)
I have a concern with your plastic backslash behind the stovetop. I agree with @virginiatolles idea of the slated panels for the backslash. Regarding the knobs. Your choice is nice. Yet at the same time it won't eliminate your problem. It will lessen the issue.
I actually love the original tiles, it looks even better with the green of the down cabinets.
agree!
The paneling on the island looks so good!
I love the wall slat idea! I am very confused by the decision to cover the backsplash though. They aren't a colour I would pick but they are so beautiful and unique!
Haha same I would killll to have those tiles! Oh well, everything else I loved!
Yes, the existing tiles were unique & gorgeous! Such a downgrade.
I think the real backsplash tile is SO much better than the “stickers” …
Same I really thought the change was a downgrade…
...The bad thing about the " Real Backsplash " is ALL THE TEXTURE. I'm not sure why anyone would use that much of a Textured Splashback ,in a Kitchen, because it's not a good idea; you actually

I'd have done the backsplash in the same paneling, again held on with Command Strips. The brass pulls look terrific! All quite affordable, too!
Oh that could look could! I don’t think it would be very easy to clean though with cooking messes?
I really like your tiles! So much nicer than most tiles in rentals:)
The paneling looks so good!! Are you going to wrap the other side of the island with the green contact paper! That’d look so good!

That green is gorgeous

Love it! FYI, beware those round knobs…I STILL get caught on the knobs! I think it’s a height thing…
The tiles are so lovely, it's the cabinet colors that need to be changed.
I own my home, but I'm trying to budget friendly update my kitchen. I might just try wrapping my lower cabinets! Great ideas in this video!

Sooooo fun! I super appreciate how real you are with sharing trying DIYs that didn’t quite work out. 😂❤️
Already looks so much more homey and warm. Love it...especially the lowers. The color is amazing.
I love how you show your whole process. I feel so much more encouraged to try when I see that even pros make happy accidents 😊

I think you should take the contact paper over to your last pantry cabinet and have it go all the way up. Possibly wrap island too :).
I'm always so happy when I see that you uploaded a new video. It makes my day way better. ❤️✨
🎉Happy New Year!!🥳 💗💗 love, love how the kitchen is going, and great job loving the color green n the new cabinet knobs, those old ones are a hazard
Happy blessed New Year, team TB!❣️
Thank you so much!! 💛
You are brilliant, thank you for sharing.
Wow love it
Dang! Lovin those wooden panels
Happy New Year Tina and Brian. I really enjoy your Sunday videos it completely make a difference on my weekend 😊
it does look much brighter, well done. I like the green and maybe your landlord will say you can leave it when you move as it looks so much nicer?
so fun you bring us to places like Home Depot to get the wood!
I’m not a renter but I change my mind so damn much that these tips work great for me. ❤
Looks great will you be adding the green paper to the fridge cabinets too?
It's so funny to me that you haven't seen the wood slats done before. In the Netherlands they have been popular for years now, half the houses in my neighborhood has them somewhere in the house. Still love them though, I'm actually still looking for a place in my own home to put them 😛Just feels like USA is behind on interior design trends ;-)
Your talent and projects are terrific. I am curious when you move how long it will take to re-boringize your apt.
Great creativity! My only question mark is around having contact paper behind the hob as im not sure how fire resistant it would be
I have a concern with your plastic backslash behind the stovetop.
I agree with @virginiatolles idea of the slated panels for the backslash.
Regarding the knobs. Your choice is nice. Yet at the same time it won't eliminate your problem. It will lessen the issue.
