    The MT03 is a huge motorcycle compared to a Grom. That extra weight is equal to another person. The thing that makes the Mini-moto bikes so much fun is the diminutive size. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WEIGHT! So the MT03 is not the same as a Grom experience.
    The Mini-moto bikes are perfect for learning to ride a motorcycle. Their light weight makes moving the machine around easier. The low power helps the rider remain in control if they make a mistake.
    For wanting a regular motorcycle experience, the MT03 is a better buy if that is what you want. For FUN, the mini-moto experience can't be beat!

    • @MrMoneyHelper
      @MrMoneyHelper 6 месяцев назад

      @@avizeno3481 I sat on an MT03 and found the pegs a bit higher than on an older Grom. I haven't sat on a 2024 Grom. An MT03 will go on any highway with its top speed over 90 mph. A Grom won't reach 60 without lots of modifications. Even with more go fast parts, it will struggle in headwinds and uphill roads.
      If you own a car and use it for commuting on highways, get a Grom for fun. If you don't own a car and need to travel on highways buy the MT03. It won't have the fun factor of light weight and ease of movement but it will take you anywhere you need to go. The MT03 will be fun. I'm sure you will enjoy it very much.

    You cant compare this to a grom. A grom is a mini moto, the MT is not.

    • @JonesBrosGarage
      @JonesBrosGarage  2 года назад +4

      Only a 7” difference in wheel base, and a 0.7” difference in seat height solely due to the MTs larger wheels. 140lb weight difference but the grom would also gain some weight with double the motor size. If you’re somebody who has experience riding the MT feels pretty small. If you don’t have experience I think the MT is a better choice for a first bike 🤷‍♂️

    • @fatrobdouble
      @fatrobdouble 2 года назад +21

      I disagree. Don't buy a MT-03; buy a CBR1000RR. Price, displacement, configuration, class....none of that matters, right? (I'm guessing this video is based on the premise that ppl buy Groms b/c they want a beginner bike, not bc they want a minimoto....)
      In all seriousness, Kawasaki has (had?) the z125, it seems to have just a fraction of the Grom's market share, but I'd love to see Yamaha and Suzuki throw their hats into the ring, with 125cc bikes with 12" wheels... that would be awesome

    • @JonesBrosGarage
      @JonesBrosGarage  2 года назад +1

      @@fatrobdouble yeah except for the fact the mt03 is still extremely light and the seat height is less than an inch higher. It’s $1000 more brand new. You can completely pin first gear from 0mph and be completely fine just like a grom. You sit upright like a grom. But you’re right, they’re both pretty similar to a $17,000 superbike. 😂 The video is based on the premise the Mt03 still has a mini moto feel but is more capable with some similar specs

    • @fatrobdouble
      @fatrobdouble 2 года назад +11

      @@JonesBrosGarage The bikes are in entirely different classes. Both small and cheap, but one has more than double the displacement, it's a twin vs a thumper, one has 12s vs 17s for the other...You can argue that the MT03 is the more capable bike (and it had better be), you can argue that it's a better bike for beginners (which is probably true), but if you want a Grom for legit reasons, you won't see the mt03 as a viable substitute.
      I mean, honestly, the mt03 stacks up more closely to the cb300r, where the main difference will be the thumper vs the twin...that's a comparison worth making. Watching this video, it seems mostly like you're just not "getting" the minimoto thing...seems like you're just kinda hating.

  • @inseasonandoutofseason
    @inseasonandoutofseason Год назад +17

    Bro, you CANNOT compare the two. A Grom is a miniBIKE. They made them in 1970s & then 2014 Honda pumped out the Grom. The MT-03 is almost 300 ccs motorcycle -that is 100% what they call a "starter bike". Honda Groms are NOT to be "starter" bikes, however, not everyone learns this, nothing can change that. But the steering & breaking are not comparable to a larger motorcycle. The Grom is similar to a bicycle the way it turns & breaks . Its just that the small displacement on the Mt-03 keeps you safe to learn how to ride. there is zero comparison to be made between the two. Minibike is just that....a goof around camping type minibike. My grandma used to ride an american minibike to go feed the cows in the pasture. Its a tiny motorcycle not meant for interstate and regular motorcycle riding. I def can see why you like the MT-03/07/09 types, unique kinda bike, buts not a minibike.

  • @jack8162

    The limitations of the grom is the reason it's so good. People overestimate their abilities constantly and the grom won't let you get too crazy. Someone who just got comfortable going 50mph and hasn't practiced evasive maneuvering or anything is better served not having the ability to go 100, cause everyone gets that itch to push it a little more if they can.

    You are very correct about a Grom not being a good first bike. Point is, it and the Kawasaki Z125 are pocket bikes designed for a very specific purpose: To save on gas and maintenance costs for a rider who has experience, but also owns a car or pickup truck.

    I agree with you largely. I don't own either bike but prefer motorcycles that are lower power having owned a range of high powered motorcycles.
    I would likely have a Grom if it was in the 250cc range. I prefer at least the power of the MT-03 which is fun because you can still wring its neck and not get in much trouble. Try that on a 600cc sport bike and you can end up in jail or worse.
    Finding Goldilocks. Different for everybody. I really like both bikes. A guy like me with my background could do an engine swap or big bore kit on a Grom but I don't feel like it. :-) I believe in buying the motorcycle with the target power you prefer versus building it and I have done both.

      I agree. So many people are mad about this video because this thing “isn’t a grom.” But I’ve ridden tons of bikes in this class and this is the only one that gives me the same feeling as the grom. It feels very small and light and like you can go do anything on it. The only difference is the little boost in power and suspension makes it better in any situation you’d use the grom for. The only thing I hands down can understand for preferring the grom is the weight difference.

I ride a 650 naked bike and the Grom is so much fun I can ring it out with out breaking any laws if I do that on the 650 I'm defiantly getting pulled over. Just riding the Grom and it giving me all it's got from stoplight to stoplight is satisfying. Smiles per gallon are insane on a Grom don't listen to this guy if you are thinking about buying one do it.
    Edit ~ missive
    You can get a Grom on market place for crazy cheap assuming you check it regularly
    Insurance is 10 a month for me and my brother
    Number one people don't by a Grom to ride on the highway
    I agree there the Grom should defiantly be a second or third bike pleas don't make it your first
    Not better for hooning bigger CC's means louder exhaust notes so the Grom wins in this segment smaller CC's so you can get away with more for longer
    If do stupid things that a bike isn't meant to do, They buy a Grom
    Aftermarket support MT03 00.02% Grom 100%
    The SF Grom seat does the exact same thing
    There is no way a stunt tank like the one on the 636 exists for the MT03 now I haven't googled it just going off of how small and unused this bike is
    Buy a Grom because its fun to ride and better for hooning and stunting then a MT03
    Yes you have a little less market support on the MT, Yeah I'd say about 1000% less. The Grom is amazing for modding and making it your own unlike the MT03
    You can do more to this then you can the Grom I highly doubt that. Buy a tank and regear the Grom the power point is moot in my pov because reasons
    You've ridden both but not owned both.
    I don't know if I'm the only person that hoped on a MT03 and jumping some curbs, na pretty sure your the only one everyone else rides theirs like a 1000cc bike which I resect
    Lies I'm 5' 11'' and have zero issues riding my SF Grom around for hours having a blast
    Does eVeRyThIng A gRom CaN dO BuT iT DoEs It BeTteR, Sir you sit on a thorn of lies
    0.07 of an inch isn't going to matter just buy the Grom
    Again people don't buy a Grom to ride the freeway
    You can take it to a track, you can take the Grom to go a kart track most go kart tracks have mini bike nights and a Grom has 4-5 gears not 6
    Back roads on a Grom are crazy fun taking corners a max power is amazing, and you can't do that on a MT03 you'll just be in second gear my bad first the entire time

    Its the same with a CBR300R. In my opinion, the best all round bike would be a ptwin 500cc. Even the cbr300 would do 107mph, its still not enough for highway. Yeah, sure it can go fast enough, but you really have little to no overtaking power, and the 300 you're running attests to the fact that you are above comfortable cruising rpm.
    To get rid of the habdlebar vibrations, i used to own an FZ07, and it had the same issue, all you need to do is swap out sprockets, for lower highway rpm.
    By default you choose a +1t sprocket from stock on the front, AND a -3t on the rear. It will lower your rpm by between 10-20%, and makes it ideal for highway riding, but your speedo will be off by the percentage your sprockets are off. Your mpg in final gear will roughly climb by 10-15%, so with the new setup, you can add 10-15% on range per tank.
    The honda grom has only like 1.1-1.2 gal useable i believe and the rest is reserve. It also doesn't even come close to 125mpg, definitely not 150mpg. With a sprocket change, the grom can reach 125-130mpg at best.
    Anyway, if you want a hooligan bike for town, the grom 150, kawazaki Z125, or a grom clone, like the X-Pro 150, are your best buys. They all are below 235lbs.
    If you want a decent highway capable bike, you go for a 500cc bike, which often is only 50lbs more than the 300cc bikes, and you can drive highway easily (with relaxed riding).
    A friend of me took a 300cc sports bike from miami to Daytona and back, and his bike broke down, because of going wide open throttle for too long.

    As an 'only' bike, yeah this is better than a Grom. But you'd be better served with a Njnja 300 or 400 as an 'only' bike. As a 'second' bike, something super tiny and tossable, economical on fuel AND initial cost, something to 'hoon', the Grom is better. I love my Ninja 300 as an 'only' bike, but if I wanted a second bike, I can't think of any scenario where I'd ride the MT-03 over the faster, more economical Ninja. I'd never get my $$worth. 71MPG, top speed 120mph, 0-60 4.5seconds with my mods. I am considering a Grom as a 'second' bike, and I would get my use out of it! Triple the fuel economy of an MT-03 is a no-brainer for me, my main reason for being interested in Grom.

    • @JonesBrosGarage
      @JonesBrosGarage  2 года назад +1

      The fuel economy is a pretty nice plus on the grom. I rode a ninja 400 for awhile and actually prefer the MT03 a lot more but that’s more personal preference. Id say MOST riders with a 300/400 class bike aren’t looking for a second bike, and if they are it’s usually something bigger. At least in the United States, most people I talk to refuse to even start on a 300/400 because they think it’s too small. So this video was more geared toward somebody who already has a “big” bike such as a r6 or mt09 for example. It makes a lot more sense from the perspective of somebody who owns a big bike already. If you already own a 300/400 class and want something even smaller the grom is definitely a way better option than the MT03

    • @jeladsnikpoh1289
      @jeladsnikpoh1289 2 года назад +1

      @@JonesBrosGarage I agree, it's a matter of preference. I prefer the better aero and riding dynamics of a 'sportbike' over the more laid back comfort of a naked, or whatever the MT-03 is classed. I do like your good ol Yamaha, no shade here! I find my Ninja 300 to have better seating (more roomy and able to tuck better, and slightly lower handlebars for aero) compared to the Ninja 400, with better mpg. So, yes my priorities are 'unique'. It is plenty quick for me, but I would like at least a 3-bike garage -tiny Grom, small Ninja 300, light but quick Yamaha R7, and Fast Honda CBR-1000rr (when the ship comes in). Each one serving a different purpose, fun in different ways, all lightweight comparable to their classes, and Japanese! I don't, however, subscribe to the notion that your d1ck size has any relation to your bike's engine size. A 'slow' baby Ninja with mods still performs 0-60 like a C4 Corvette ZR-1, or C5 Corvette, and with ample power to send my 136lb a$$ to jail even on steepest hills. That's sufficient for me, for what it is! I've owned 3 Corvettes, a Hayabusa, and several other very powerful vehicles, with no noticeable increase in my 'manliness'. I'm confident enough that I've no need to prove anything to anyone! Just ride what I like! You do likewise, and enjoy those smiles per gallons!

      Small 125 cc motorcycles and even 49 cc scooters can be one's only transportation and be perfectly fine. It just depends on what one needs for transportation. Many people don't even own motor vehicles. They use bicycles. I was that way for years. Now I only own a 125 cc scooter. It has a top speed of 50 mph. That is plenty for town. Though now that I live in a big city, it would be more convenient to have a 300-500 cc motorcycle to be able to ride across town faster at 70 mph to save time. Yes actually. This is due to the cb500 having a much larger motor but the same or less horsepower than the mt03. The mt03 is much more aggressively tuned than the cb500! That is one draw back to trying to suck power out of a small motor.

    Not wrong but I think the GROM falls in a special category of its own and once you start to look at full-size 300cc to be specific there are a lot of options that fit the same category and some that do more than the MT then it becomes the MT vs all other budget 300cc bikes for me I think they're not meant to be cross-shopped even with the kinda close MSRP they are just two different types of motorcycles made for two very different things and owning either would not exclude possibly getting or wanting the other in my opinion. Still, I very much appreciate your opinion and enjoy the content!

    You are comparing apples to pears, I'm sure any 300 would have these benefits you say, and although you are obviously right about extra power etc, most people get a grom, A) because they are limited to a 125cc as a learner bike, and B) because the grom is not only a small bike, but a dinky little machine that is about as small and easy to get on and ride as you can possibly get without going to silly sizes. I've gone full circle from 125 to 600 to 1000 to 900 and now am going to retire to a 125 Monkey, yes ideally I should consider the 300 market (I tried a Duke 390, loved it) but I barely bike anymore as too much faff getting it out and its feeling heavier each time, and because I rarely ride it like a sport bike anyway and need a change after 14 year ownership, I will probably regret, but Monkeys just make me smile even though I've never actually ridden one! 😅

      I’ve ridden most new 300cc bikes on the market and the mt03 is the only one I’d recommend people who are looking into groms. It just feels drastically lighter and smaller than the other 300cc bikes. My point isn’t that riders who already own bikes should pick this over a grom. My point is people who buy groms as their first and only bike would often be better suited with the MT03.

    So recently just came across your video the mto3 is a good beginner bike but a Honda Grom is something completely different people use them for stunting people put Big Bore kits and do all kinds of crazy stuff on them retune them some people put bigger Motors in them but at the end of the day it's a small tiny little bike that doesn't take up any space but you can literally pick up and put in the back of your pickup truck and it doesn't feel like a normal motorcycle feels like you're just having fun racing stop lights and if you ever driven in a group 5 to 10 people all of them riding groms it's all fun a cheap cost next to nothing I'm talkin brand new if you walk into a dealership with 4,500 bucks you're probably walking out with a Grom you could probably walk out with a Grom at least I can that's a brand new motorcycle paid off that you can just have fun on and you never have to sell it eventually most people get tired of what they're riding still have my 2015 I live in Colorado I can just pull off the side of the road somewhere a relaxed and it's tiny and easy to get in and out of places especially with some off-road tires

    The honda gron is an excellent first bike. Power doesn't save you more than swirving around an obstacle. This bike is about 50% more weight than a grom, and for that reason, and because its more powerful than a 200cc, i would NEVER recommend this bike over a grom as a first bike! 100-200cc category is a much better first starter bike because of weight, cost, nimbleness, after market support, forums, and power handling (cant get you in too much trouble) Your bike is less safe than a Honda grom. I think i have more experience than you to testify that your advice is totally wrong. A lot of guys saying 'out manoeuvering traffic with a bigger bike' end up in a wreck or dead.
    You shouldnt think of out manoeuvring traffic. You should think of safety first. Not forcing your way in traffic.
    There is another reason the 300cc category is sold so cheap on the 2nd hand market, because its not as nimble as a grom, and its not as relaxed on the highway as say a cb500 or similar bike.
    I guess most bikers would agree that:
    - a 125-150cc around town scooter/bike,
    - a 500 cc for highway commuting,
    - and a 1 liter+ for speed demon hooligans, or cruisers.
    Is all you need.
    You can't wheelie, because you never had a grom! Had you have a grom or clone, you wouldnt worry about dropping the bike.

    I rode a Grom and a Monkey. They were the slowest bikes I have ever ridden! It is the only motorcycle I have ridden where you turn the throttle and NOTHING happens! They remind me of those go carts that you rent and race on the track. They are governed I think for about 10mph and when you push the gas pedal it takes them about 5 minutes to think about moving. IMO, the Grom and Monkey are ok around the neighborhood or on country rural roads, but I wouldn't feel comfortable taking them on any highways or major roads where the speed limit is over 40mph. If you tried to merge in front of a car or a truck, you are going to be road kill! Forget highways! Why buy a 9hp motorcycle and soup it up to 15hp when you can just get a 300cc and have 35hp for a little bit more? They are are for pussies and kids that are afraid of a real motorcycle. I had a Honda 300 CBRR that I sold because it was too slow to stay with traffic, and it was over stressed on the highway because you are running near redline all the time. They are unsafe IMO in most situations because you can't avoid accidents because of insufficient acceleration.
