Jason and Derek stumbled across what must be Jason's harshest car review ever - his first drive of the R35 Nissan GT-R. While he recognizes that he doesn't actually hate it that much, it's a flashback to our first glimpse into modern, turbocharged, dual-clutch, all-wheel-drive "Sports Cars." Jason hated it.
But he didn't hate everything - as always, Derek and Jason found plenty of fun cars to review!

😂 a few years ago there was 2009 for sale in Vaughan with only 70,000km since new, clean car fax, and no mods for like $38,000. Either something was horribly wrong with it or someone got a sick deal and saved themselves $100,000.

@@TML34 People import a lot of cars that already exist here. Why import a German market Mercedes? Sometimes it's how other markets differentiate their products, sometimes it's a matter of preference... But as for why someone would import a GTR out of Japan and into Canada boils down to cost. They can be significantly cheaper than our domestic examples. The same was true for JDM vs USDM Mk4 Supras for years.

My wife had a Fiat 500 Sport when we met. She did springs, sway bars, short shifter, very light 15" wheels (1/2 the weight of the stock units!), and nice tires. She used to autocross it with me when we were in college and it was hilarious to watch all 101 horsepower working at all times to try and make the thing lose grip on the good tires. She spun it once with lift off oversteer on a big loop that was always a facet of that course.

I always enjoy Jason's opinions and I have never known what he thought about the GTR until I saw this pop up in my feed. I have driven my GTR with a huge smile on my face since early 2009. I modified it slowly over the years up to about 620 crank hp. In stock form, back in 2009 some of the commentary about this car was valid. It did not sound special then but that was easily rectified. It certainly does NOT drive for you but perhaps back in 2009 it did more for you than most cars of its day. You can however feel everything it does through your finger tips and the seat of your pants in a way that is incredibly hard to replicate in the cars of today. Most journalists why drive it these days have come to appreciate its very much analog feel that "seemed" all too digital in 2009. Watch Throttle House drive GTRs from different eras recently to see them appreciate this car more than they once did. It makes all kinds of noises(some good, some not so good) but absolutely oozes character and presence from every pore. This is the most amazingly incorrect old view of the GTR... "soulless". What a crock of crap that makes me realize a reviewer is clueless. I can tell you from 120,000 miles at a GTR wheel... It transports you mind, body and soul to another world where everything feels possible. It's always an emotional experience when you push it hard. You can feel it talking it you and you can talk back with your hands and your feet. You can become one with your car and it feels like putting on a suit of armor. A real world power suit. Everyone I have let drive my car over the years or ride shotgun ever forgets the experience. Sure, it does not feel like driving my 987 Cayman S at 2950 pounds vs 3800. But the thing is, I KNOW I will be "moved" no matter what I drive that day. They are different but both ooze character and soul. I would never sell either, ever. I don't keep driving my 15 year old GTR because I can't afford some modern 850hp super car. I sure can. I keep driving it because of how it makes me feel every single day and every single moment. I keep driving it because I love the smiles and memories I can give people for free who I just met at a car meet. Its just awesome to own one and always will be.

He mentioned in the episode that he was overly harsh when reviewing it because it represented everything he disliked with where the industry was going.
I like what throttle house has done on the GTR, but also looking at other reviewers who drove it early on and then later on. It seems to me that the GTR was overly ridiculed because it was a precursor of things to come, and compared to other contemporary and newer cars it's super engaging but if you are comparing it to a 90s or earlier car it is less engaging.
A lot of the reviewers who were reviewing GTRs when they came out had a lot of experience with pre 2000 cars, and so that was the frame of reference they were unfairly comparing the GTR to.
To conclude I don't think this review shows he was clueless but rather that all people including journalists are highly influenced by the context that they are exposed to.

Last year, I had the opportunity to drive a 2021 GT-R for a day. I was super excited, but it wound up being a let down. Yes it was fast as hell, but aside from enjoying the sound of the turbos spooling (which reminded me of jet engines spinning up), I felt absolutely no emotion whatsoever while driving it. There was certainly nothing bad about it or that I disliked. It just didn't stir me at all.

Nissan tried! It never saw the light of production but they made a concept car called the Infiniti Eau Rouge. It was a Q50 4 door body with an R35 GTR underneath. They eventually abandoned the idea because the GTR has a rear trans axle that compromised rear seating room and I imagine that caused some safety complications as well. Unfortunately the compromise was building the Q50 Red Sport which is far from what the Eau Rouge would've been.

I'm not surprised Jason hated the GT-R, he sounded much too charitable in the old Motortrend vid he made of all the generations.
It's the Carmudgeon anti-christ. But that's part of why I like it.
I'd love to own one. Everyone who's driven one recently actually appreciated the fact it felt so analog while putting down insane numbers but it's everything he doesn't want in a sports car.
GT-Rs are not sports cars. The R35 was a supercar, end of.
To me, that's missing the forest for the trees for the cultural impact it had and how much it affected me (and a generation of mes) liking cars.
I still get excited everytime I see one. If I ever had a poster car, that'd be it. I hope I meet my hero and don't end up in Jason's NA1 NSX situation, with a check to buy one and leaving hating the thing,... Yeah for younger enthusiasts that was the car growing, it was so popular, so dominant… It hit shores right as influencers started to become a thing in the early days of RUclips and was everywhere… I also like how it’s a bit brutish, it’s not pretty, it’s not fun (at least not in the way a Miata or GR86 is fun), it had one goal and that was to be ridiculously fast point to point or around a track, and even today it still is… It’s not a sports car, it’s a supercar killer, it’s an exotic without the flamboyance and sound… It took all the supercars of that era that were loud and flamboyant, punched them in the face and took their lunch money… It might not be “fun” but it’s a car that doesn’t really care about “fun”, that wasn’t on the menu when the GTR was built. Like Jason said, in the zombie apocalypse where there isn’t any fun to be had, the GTR is the car Im picking hands down…

WoW ... That is a lot of hate pointed towards the 1.8t. Having said that, I sort of agree. As long as you have the dual mass flywheel on it, it is a sad engine. A lightweight flywheel transform it to a revvy fun one.
Now the Passat ... My daily has been a 1.8t FWD B5.5 wagon since 2019 and I can't let it go ever since. It is great in EVERYTHING I though at it; I moved 4 times with it and bullied a GT350 out of my way on waterford hills. Before you get any ideas, all I did to the vehicle is H&R springs, Bilstein B4s, and RE71Rs.
The B5 1.8t is especially weak at the low end, but later engines solved/masked that with the small port head, throttle by wire, a primitive VVT on the intake cam, and better electronics in general. I get full boost @ 2000RPM. Lastly, the 1.8t is designed for boost and the passat got only 7psi of the 22psi others vehicles were running. In short, you drove that engine at its worst form.

If you watch the videos with Mizuno San and understand it's unique driving technique I found it quite rewarding to drive. The gearbox in auto mode is genuinely shockingly bad but as Jason says that's so the gtr can pass the noise test.

@@memememine1 yep the GT-R does not like to be driven slowly. You’re always reminded you’re in a GT-R. Once youre really moving and especially if you’re using the paddles yourself the DCT is fast.

    • @rainsilent

Remember that the GT-R represents everything that he hates about the direction that the car industry went post 2000. Auto, turbo, AWD. That alone is why he hates it. In the video he admitted it is great performance wise. Sound is also subjective but I think all post 2000 turbos sound horrible. I don't think turbo engines sound good in general though so. Personally I am with Jason in that I don't like it. I think it is ugly but looks are entirely subjective. Personally I think darn near everything post 2000ish is bad looking or worse. I don't want a car to look like it might try to kill you with how aggressive its styling is. I want a car to look seductively beautiful. This is why I think the most modern beautiful car is a 2017 Aston Martin Vantage.
To counter what the other person said, "Maybe we're just inexperienced." You aren't a smuck either. It entirely has to do with preference, with maybe a little inexperience thrown in. Case in point. Jason, DTS and I have one thing in common. We learned to drive with analogue cars. We know what real steering feedback feels like. All GT-Rs have either full hydraulic steering or electric steering. In comparison the GT-R's steering is just devoid of feel. Virtually all 2000 and later cars are like this. Some are completely dead while others are actually decent. Nissan's steering has never been widely praised whereas virtually every recognizable person in the car world will name either Porsche (in only specific 911 GTs. Every other one is meh at best.) or McLaren as having the best modern hydraulic or electric steering. And even the best from those two pale in comparison to analogue steering in terms of feedback and road feel.
If you are a car person that is more interested in raw performance then the GT-R is one of the best cars in the world full stop. There is no arguing that fact. However if you are the car person that wants an analogue driving experience where you properly feel everything that the car is doing the GT-R is pretty much completely dead. It is "soulless video game" by virtue that everything is completely digital or hydraulic. Nothing on that car is analogue. Not even the suspension. The GT-R is a full tilt technology demonstrator that demonstrates what technology can allow car companies to do performance wise. That was the entire point of it being made. In doing that it sacrificed any and all analogue feel. This is what is meant when Jason says soulless video game while talking about a car. Virtually every modern performance car has this problem too, to varying degrees. The 911S/T is the closest any modern performance car comes to what Jason, DTS and I look for and there isn't anything outside of McLaren that can come vaguely close to competing with it. Again. Not inexperience. Just preference. And you aren't a smuck. Well, you might be but I can't say at the moment.

@@rainsilent Lol there’s a lot I like about your response but, that last line made me laugh. Jason has access to cars that virtually no one has. Smuck being that I am a nobody. I’ve driven many cool cars but nothing compared to him.
Anyways, I’ll just say that all R35s have hydraulic steering. Theres so much vibration, feedback, and noises. Getting in the car, starting it up, and going to into drive offer more analog sensations than any car I’ve driven that’s come after the GT-R. The steering talks to you, it follows the road, it makes you think it needs an alignment compared to EPS. So I can’t get behind the video game or numb comments. But we will agree to disagree.
My favorite point you made was preference. I think that’s the part that made so much sense. I love a manual gearbox. I daily drive a Veloster N. But the GT-R is way more fun to me. I’d love to drive the cars in Jason’s garage but, if it were my garage I’d yearn for something with some torque.
