Road Rage in slow cars - The Carmudgeon Show featuring Jason Cammisa and Derek from ISSIMI - Ep. 52

- If Eight is Enough, Ten is too many: Jason just bought his tenth car, and it’s a problem. It’s also slow. Japanese Kei cars are limited to 660 cc and 64 horsepower - but the Honda Beat is an 8500-rpm 3-cylinder with ITBs and sounds like a Porsche 911’s flat-six. Just without any chance of a speeding ticket.
Jason also just drove an Autozam AZ-1, which has Gullwing doors and is surprisingly fast - so the boys wonder if a Suzuki Cappuccino is just as good?
This leads a discussion of slow cars, which invariably means diesels. And a Fiat Cinquecento. Its 2-cylinder, 11-hp just gave Derek some anxiety this past weekend. More so than the underpowered Land Rover Defender 110 diesel that actually managed 70 mph - after miles of full-throttle motoring.
Jason once had a W123 300TD Turbo wagon that started, but didn’t run. How is that possible? Starting fluid. But the OM617 diesel’s loping idle is among the best sounds in the world. And some later Mercedes diesels - like the W124 1995 E300 diesel and OM606 24-valve straight-six. Which is smooth, but slow.
Somehow the conversation then turned to Derek’s hatred of the Ferrari F355 and 550 Maranello. It’s always fun to see Derek miserable, at least for Jason.
We suspect the same will be true for you.
The Carmudgeon Show is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network.
Watching 6 Carmudgeon episodes in about a month's time feels highly illegal for some reason.
Feels naughty as hell!
Almost counters all the BS from the past few years
I'm pretty sure it is illegal.
I just found out about the Carmudgeon show and binged all the previous ones on this episode and a few on the ISSMI channel. When I first discovered Jason Camissa's content I thought I could just listen to him talk endlessly and this proves that I was right lol
Don't let them know that
So...I had an '87 928S4, which often seemed down on power. The local expert diagnosed a disintegrated engine mount, which I could not connect with loss of power - but it was cheap enough so he replaced them both. BINGO! Back to full beans. Turns out that the knock sensors from that era (the S4 was LH-Jetronic, plus separate electronic sparks) were unable to distinguish genuine knock from mount-induced vibration so the ignition ECU just pulled ALL of the advance out of it...I think those early E30s used the same basic Bosch kit.
I hope you guys enjoy making these as much as we do listening
Totally! It's just like hanging out with my friend... except with better lighting and weird microphones.
The S🅱in king is here
I live in Japan. Nobody comes to measure your parking spot but you DO have to measure on a map of your residence a space for the car. Kei-cars are exempt from the parking space measurement. The tax liability is around 70% less than a regular car.
Do they have modern kei-cars or was it just a 90’s thing?
@@joeracer302 plenty of kei cars still on the market. One of the most beautiful around now being the Honda S660, which is the modern reinterpretation of the Beat.
@@aprtur Is/going out of production, darn it.
@@qtrfoil true, the S660 is already out ..but there's still stuff like the Jimny and Copen 🙂
@@aprtur Oooh, never knew about the Copen. Now, want! Reminds me of my old 1275 Midget, but I also fear that both just aren't survivable on most US roads, which are littered with...larger...vehicles, driven poorly.
God this show makes the my Mondays now!
That drag race between the 500 and the Defender might be the most live-action Lupin III has ever been.
"Can you use stating fluid on a diesel?"- Laughs in Caterpillar, Cummins
Detroit owners be like "Yeah, how many gallons do YOU use?"
Poly mount stiffness might have caused a harmonic, making one or more sensors (or intermittent connections or resistances) to send incorrect data to the ECU, triggering a "safe" mode (pull timing, richen mixture) far from optimal spark/fuel programs. That resonance could have spooked any number of sensors or possibly weak electrical connections. Congrats on fixing it.
And thanks for continuing to do Carmudgeons, Icons, Revelations, and BTS with DTS - your unique attention-to-detail brings special joy to those of us who cherish "driving therapy time" with alphanumerics that only true car types "get" like 987.2-CS, AP2, and 5Z28BA. Keep up the great work, gents. Would love to cross paths with you if you start touring Cars & Coffee events across the US & build another great show out of that...
Ether (starting fluid) sprayers were often optioned on diesel vehicles sold in cold weather markets. Totally an acceptable practice.
I used to work on snowcats. “Does that work on a diesel!?!” Made me laugh
This the only thing that keeps me sane Mondays.
Bourbon.
God this show is absolute perfection. Thank you to everyone who is involved in making these
omg is that a GT3 Touring in your profile picture or "just" a regular GT3?
57:07 Cammisa's engine sound effects are uncanny
Watching this show every episode gives me some laugh out loud moments!! So geeky, so detailed, and relatable for everyone
My mom had a VW Golf Diesel in the 80's. I remember the unique smell it had. We also often had to stop at truck stops to fuel it, so it would be these huge 18 wheelers and our little Golf.
3 cylinders are awesome! I’m not a Ford fan but I want to try to get a 3 cylinder eco boost to run in a longitudinal application. It would make an amazing restomod swap for old British sports cars or early Jeep’s with their tiny engine bays.
Can’t make this shit up
I was binge watching old episodes currently on episode 21… where they are talking about the Honda Beat when I got the notification that a new episode was available.
Get out! I can't remember what we've talked about n the past - who knew we mentioned the Beat?!
Starting fluid is a pending disaster. In poverty days, I owned a sketchy 1973 240Z that was a daily driver in Minneapolis. Street parked, including in the winter. Car hated starting when the temp was cold, so I used starting fluid to start it. On one particularly cold say, that started a fire in the intake. Fire went out quickly and the Z continued to run in the same sporadic way it had before the fire.
"You can only burn so much fuel with 650cc."
Well... I did manage to get 11mpg out of a 400cc engine once. Picture this. 3-cylinder carbureted piston-port 2-stroke from the 70s. 2 of the cylinders are not running at all, the other one is troubled. 100 miles from home, engine's coming apart no matter what, let's just hold it wide open and see how far it goes before we have to get the truck. Full throttle, 3rd gear, 7000rpm, full tuck position, 45 miles per hour. Billowing blue smoke and blowing sticky icky black goo out of the exhausts. I deplete 3 whole tanks of fuel and drain the oil injector tank (~1.5qts) to zero. I later discovered that the fuel valve was undersized, so the bike was fuel starving and running lean, if you can dig it. Regardless, running lean and with no oil left, the bike makes it all the way home, because Kawasaki. Eventually I tear the engine down and discover no fewer than 3 catastrophic problems which should mean instant death by seizure for a 2-stroke. Nope.
The only vehicle I've gotten worse highway mileage with was a V10 powered Econoline party bus. That did about 10 or so mpg with the 6.8 2-valver turning 2,800rpms dragging a parachute of a truck.
I think you should at one point drive underpowered European cars like old VW Polos. It's incredible fun to have a car you need to speed shift to hit 70mph but don't have to brake at all to get in to a bend
... Or a 1.4 8v astra with 60ps (c14nz engine), or a Peugeot expert van with the XUD 70hp engine... Exactly 30 seconds to 60mph, unloaded ...😭
what an adorable introduction - awesome stuff guys
The car that got faster fixing mounts... is there a knock sensor? Horrendous vibrations could cause that to neuter the motor.
No knock sensor.
@@JasonCammisa roger that. I am in the east bay area. I assume you have not had any seat time in a Noble? If I ever see you at one of the car shows, I can remedy that for you. =p it is as close to stock as you can find.
You won't break my heart, I know the front end is too light/squishy. I do find the laggy turbos entertaining though. I am in the east bay as well
Thank you and that 1h should ease the Monday pain 😂🍻
I know ‘we’ shouldn’t really swear on Carmudgeon, but another fckg brill episode from a Brit living in Hungary.
So, hyphen, my mother thinks you are hot , but she is 96 now. Can you say hi to Mildred, her name does start with an Mi.
I wish I was Derek so I could sit across the table from Jason.
Listening to the 335d part in my 2011 M Sport 335d 🥰🥰
This is wonderful content. So happy there is now some consistency
DT-S is SO bad at selling out for sponsors.
And that’s why Pennzoil loves him.
So, they were wrong last week. The answer is not miata, it is Honda Beat.
Amen!
I saw the wipers cycle during the Beat driving video. Did someone try to signal a lane change and hit the wipers by accident?
NO OF COURSE NOT!
@@JasonCammisa Sure.
great show !! Loved it!
Keep making them please, because I love watching them :)
Jason's engine noises are the best
The most fun I've had with a car was in a 4WD Subaru wagon I bought for a case of beer and a battery. That thing was great on gravel roads through the woods.
Today I learned the show has a transcript available in the description, cool addition!!
44:48 - that is also the procedure to extinguish a fire in an aeroplane piston engine especially if it happens when cranking because of over-priming!
love the Beat! i have an MR2 Spyder, the next slowest car to the Beat, but horrendous fun to drive.
I need Jason immitation of a Diesel as my ringtone. Also will you guys please for the love of god finally do the Piech episode.
That indirect injection 5 cyl diesel sound is spot on!
The OM606 turbo diesel was the most powerful passenger car diesel at the point, even in the W210 tank it went very well
I used to start my Renault Modus 1.5 dci with starting fluid when it's injectors weren't injecting very well. Ran great as soon as it spluttered into life though.
"I'm never objective. Fuck."
Peak Hyphen.
Fuckin love diesel cars. The cops in Australia are now driving 530D BMWs.
Beamer diesels are insane. Mate of mine bought a used E91 325D that had a 300PS tune done @120.000km. He bought it with 250.000 km already on the clock and he then sold that absolute monster to another guy with over 320.000km on the clock. That piece of shit just would not die.
Try smelling your own exhaust. Diesels are yuck.
Every show turns into an e90 show at some point. Is the 328i still the one you would buy yourself?
Definitely a bucket list car for me, the Beat. Sounds like a high-pitched baby NSX.
Yes, another one!
Fun fact, the AZ-1 and the early cappuccinos share the same F6A 657cc motor.
WTF NEVER SEEN A BOND FILM!?!?!?!
in the early 80s, i had a series old beaters, alfas etc...I always carried starting fluid those winters.... minus 15F...etc.
The w116 300sd is surprisingly good around the corners and the chassis is a pleasure to drive at 70mph. I wish it had a 5 speed auto.
In my militaty days we used to use starting fluid on our busses. The problem with it is that the diesels become addicted... they need more and more of it to start.
Wow. This video just made me feel a whole lot better about the 'slowness' of my 2002 Cabrio.
banger content as always
Something about that ending makes me think there won't be a new episode next week lol
I remember seeing my first R129 on the back of a delivery flatbed. Year One. Sitting at my bus stop.
It was like a space ship has landed. Incredible at the time.
Which would you own?
When is the Carmudgeon merch coming. I want a coffee mug.
I know exactly how you feel in the Defender! I drove my 1990 Diesel Delica from BC down to California and back. Barely crested 60mph, what looked flat turned into hills, driving into death valley was 2nd gear 4 ways on foot to the floor smoking the whole valley! Was great but was certainly not fast!
I love driving old shitbox cars and pushing them cause you are never at risk it's hard to break the speed limit. My drag car 70 dart ran 9.1 seconds @162mph as my faster 1/4 mile. I sold that car cause I could only use it at the dragstrip and couldn't afford to make it do low 8's at the time. Now I run a 944 Lemons car and have a reliable daily and a Truck for towing.
Can you please add episode numbers to the thumbnails lads?
Driving my E30 spiritedly I broke a motor mount. I would have sworn I'd broken the internals from the sound and loss of power, replaced it and nothing else had gone wrong, the car was very much faster. Unless they're designed to work that way, engines don't like vibration, I haven't done a before/after dyno test but cars with bad motor mounts always feel slower.
I had a very similar experience spiritedly driving my focus ST of course the motor mounts broke because these cars eat motor mounts you can tell when you downshift and you could just feel the transmission mount shake The exhaust mount breaks because it's hot garbage Good thing I have four of them and I blew a $50 RockAuto strut which I purchased because it was the only thing in stock at the time
30:37 Can't get enough of Jason's big "F*CK YOUuuu!!!"
Love the random winder wiper swipe during the Beat acceleration vid. Aerodynamically induced?
Idiot-driver induced. :)
A couple of episodes ago you mentioned discussing advanced driving schools. Is that something you may still cover? I’d love to learn about what type of schools you’d recommend. Other than some of the big rally schools I can’t afford, I don’t know much of what’s out there.
0:08 lol 😆 it was in sink before the clap? I do this method helping my friend shoot music videos... 😅 rough intro hilarious! Don't worry "-" Jason, I'm learning to hate everyone! 🏁
Clapping cheeks? :V
New episodes on time still feels bizarre. Very nice!
Edit: BEAT-ing CHEEKS! Damn!
Edit 2: The Beat beat my eardrums with delight. I like.
Edit 3: My sh*tty 316i E36 feels like the engine is about to explode so
vibration definitely adds to the sensations of speed, can confirm. that's so weird tho, on a 6 cylinder
Edit 4: Jason seems to be experiencing the same joy motorcyclists did with the CBR250RR that revved to 20k RPM and felt like a mini Moto GP race just going to the supermarket.
That's what the Fortnine vid said anyway, well worth checking out, thing sounds just as insane. Did I mention 20000 RPM!??!
Edit 5: Future me, F355: 53:00
HOW THE FUCK has Jason not watched a Bond movie! F355 v DB5 is legendary! GoldenEye is great, get on it man!
But yeah..will admit...60s Bond is something. On Her Majesty's is the best "movie" out of that bunch despite the love for the Connery stuff.
Edit 6 :
@@kenta469 Edit 7 :
Actually get off my case man lol, but yeah I've had one too many coffees today.
Edit 8:
Damnnnn the Beat sounds great!
I woud argue that the carbon buildup is not only based on emissions, but on "poor handling" of the issue by manufacturers. There's a 1.6L Renault Diesel engine that Mercedes changed a little bit and put(s) into the W205 chassis as the smallest engine available in europe. It won't ever have carbon buildup, as the gasses that get recycled back are taken after the particulate filter, so the bad stuff is already filtered out. No clue of they do that with the other newer engines too, i only read it about this one, as one of my coworkers bought one, and i had a quick glace on infos about the engine.
What if the vibrations were triggering the knock sensors so it was pulling power? Not even sure if they had knock sensors back then.
That garage parking worked perfectly with one RDH car
Wow this is the first time I felt an urge to punch hyphen, as soon as he mentioned the 550
John Wayne reference from "The Cowboys." Strong.
Audio nerd here - the pop screens really aren't necessary with these mics. Also Jason's is angled away from him here, and... really the headphones aren't super necessary either unless you need to listen to stuff together. Love the great car enthusiast education btw
Maybe the motor mount vibrations were setting off the knock sensors? It is a thing that happens on cars, I'm just not sure if your PoS has knock sensors
Also, gasoline quality can make a big difference -- especially in cali where all the gas is garbage
My mom has 10 kids; it’s okay.
Jason Camisa needs to say "super adorable" more
If a portion of the energy generated by the engine is used to shake the car, it’s not being used to accelerate. Conservation of energy, we cannot escape the rules of thermodynamics
No, no, no... you have committed to weekly episodes! No turning back now by sneakily introducing a new clause in the last minute of this episode :)
Runaway diesels are running on engine oil. Cutting off air instead of fuel is the way to go. Seen a guy rip his shirt off and cram it in the turbo once. New turbo certainly cheaper than a new engine
I've run industrial forklifts that have an emergency stop that is just a cable that runs to a big flapper valve that blocks the intake in the airbox. Never had to use it, fortunately. If we trip it, auto shop has to come out and reset it, which will subject the operator to a stream of epitaphs. Not a good way to start your day.
I need one of the AZ-1's in my life. A micro supercar.
Not the same league but last fall I changed the original timing belt in my sister's 2001 Beetle 2.0L. Slow car that has lived its whole 70K mile life in NYC.
I had one of those in the golf god it was slow I remember merging and being happy when it hit 70 and it was work to hold it at 70
Derek doesn't know jack sh$t about F355s. I've owned 2 for a total of 10 years and still have both. Once sorted, they're perfectly reliable.
You clearly need a VW Up in your life or a Mini Cooper 1.5T, sweet 3cil noises
Those vs a suzuki alto works
Please do an episode on the R129
my god my old geo metro goes that fast too
I feel like everyone hates “poor left lane etiquette.”
Lots of episodes, one think I hope for is that algorith will promote this channel more.
Hey, this is actually a thing, every Monday 😁😁😁
A 2000GT Revelations episode marked for release? And God saw the light, and said the light was good, but it was halogen so he went out to shop for LEDs
And now i want honda beat
10:07 gaijin wave warning
No mention of Toyota sera?
Is that The Stigs helmet?
No wonder this episode was an hour long… 2 inserts took 49 minutes!
I really want to own one of the ABC cars at some point in my life
I appreciate DT-S shitting on the F550 & F355 & being a Mercedes snob. I've love to fit into a 246 Dino, if I could afford one.
Yea, Dino is a $350-450k car these days. F355 is waaaaaaay less expensive and always has been. Kind of an absurd comparison. Would make more sense to compare a 308/328 to an F355 as they’re a lot closer in price, but the 308/328 will have lower running costs and still give a fun Ferrari driving experience.
Jason’s mic is pointed at the ceiling.
'57 Cinquecento can hold about 5 1/2 gallons of gas.
First Beatrice, then Beat Rice amirite
What the hell was that first 5 minutes?
Why not consider buying a Toyota Corona? It is such a great name for a car that has gained a new meaning over the last two years.
We need a show about the how bad is a 355. You guys are going against the internet trend: MX5 NC is the greatest MX5, F355 and F550 are bad... you need to provide more info on this...
The microphone technique needs work, but overall fab podcast!
