  • Like it or not, we all form opinions about the drivers of car brands. In this episode, the Carmudgeons discuss how they perceive drivers of different cars.

Your car is an avatar, and you're being judged on it. Jason and Derek laugh their way through their own offensiveness, giving honest reactions to how they consider drivers of different brands of cars. This is episode #1, covering Subaru at first, and then alphabetically going through the list of manufacturers from Acura to Jeep.
    It includes stereotypes of:
    Acura drivers,
    Alfa Romeo drivers,
    Aston Martin drivers,
    Audi drivers,
    Bentley drivers,
    BMW drivers,
    Buick drivers,
    Cadillac drivers,
    Chevrolet drivers,
    Chrysler drivers,
    Dodge drivers,
    Ferrari drivers,
    Fiat drivers,
    Ford drivers,
    Genesis drivers,
    Honda drivers,
    Hyundai drivers,
    Infiniti drivers,
    Jaguar drivers, and
    Jeep drivers.
This might be the most curmudgeonly episode of the Carmudgeon Show yet, because it sure seems like Jason and Derek hate everyone else on the road. At least they hate everyone equally?

idea for a show. I would love to hear you to go through an alphabetical list of car manufacturers and choose the one model you would have in your garage for each one. See which ones are emotional connections that defy logic, fun, historical, which ones you agree on, etc. Should be worth a couple of episodes. Maybe selections by designers as well?
EDIT: Hmmm, maybe you can get it done soon, make a selection of 64 cars from the discussion, and tie it into the upcoming March Madness and put out a bracket pitting Jason's selection of picks from his list versus Hyphen's selections from his list and then have the fans pick and see who wins? Could be fun and garner some attention you guys, Hagerty, and the like...

@@nicopaoletti3501 Not allowed. One car from one manufacturer. The interesting thing would be to see Hyphen's historical knowledge come into play. I thought for him we might need to introduce a Jay Leno rule where he, or even Jason, get to sub a couple of modern makers for older ones that are now defunct. For example, Derek might throw out Buick and replace it with a Hispano Suiza or something of that nature.

Last week there was a light rain round my way for the first time in quite a while.. there was also a Mustang partially in someone's front yard.. it had gone off the road at a regular old slow speed corner and somehow squeezed between a tree and a power pole and taken out the limestone wall. It seemes to have understeered rather than oversteered, which I considered something of an achievement

Two time Jaguar owner here. Brought my (new) XE because I liked it to drive more than the equivalent 3 Series (and it was a lot cheaper) and I was bored with BMW's having had four. That was in the UK. Moved to the US and brought a (used) F Type. Partly because I wanted to represent my home country and partly because it represented far better value than a Cayman. In my mind obviously I think the Jag gives me the avatar of an English rogue, when in reality I'm an accountant with a rapidly thinning hair line.

People projecting an image of themselves through a consumer good is the outcome of successful marketing.
What’s interesting to me is when people think they’re projecting a certain image but it’s widely being perceived differently by everyone else (eg. enormous lifted trucks to project masculinity, but everyone perceives it as insecurity).

I have a Subaru Outback, and I understand that I am an outlier. I've chased motorcycles up Angeles Crest. I use the AWD for 4-wheel drifts. I go fast in the left lane, slow in the right, I pay attention to the traffic patterns around me. (It's worth noting here that mine is both completely stock, and has a manual transmission.) I've also road tripped it, driven in the snow (beautiful drifts), loaded up with bikes and/or dogs, gone camping, and gotten myself into and back out of trouble off road. I like to think that I actually use what my car can do.

No one asked but in WA at least, all law enforcement Ford Explorers- including the unmarked cars used by detectives, have yellow front running lights whereas the consumer version uses traditional white LEDs. This applies to local LEOs and State Patrol as well. It's easiest to tell with 2020- model years which are the most common now. They all have no roof rails or roof rack, marked or unmarked.

The big issue is that the front swaybars on Subarus are weak sauce = people driving so slow around corners…
Worse: they go 10-20mph slower around corners and then 10-20 mph too fast on straightaways…
They just cannot grasp the concept of choosing ONE speed and sticking with it on mountain or coastal drives
Finally- Subaru drivers love to go 35-40mph in 20-25mph zones….
Yet - as noted above- wimp out if any fun corners arrive
I put THOUSANDS into my wrx and it never handled even remotely close to my completely stock 370z…

A '79 WS6 Trans AM was a 'guido disco car' at the time -- cool, last of the breed car now. Saab 900 turbos were a professional's ride (tweet professors and archtechs) then but you need to be a pretty deep cut car person now to own one. So -- reputations change over time.

In Houston, your typical Dodge Challenger or Charger driver is the guy who maxed out his budget, thinks he's Lewis Hamilton, and probably has recently graduated from Big Altima Energy. When you see one coming up behind you on the freeway, you should immediately assume he (although sometimes it is she) is going to pass to your left at the last possible moment without a signal, cut over 2 more lanes to the left, and then cut over all the way to the right for the next exit, narrowly avoiding flying through his windshield into the heavy duty truck nearly stopped on the ramp. A lowered truck with loud or no exhaust is going to help the officer make his quota and probably doesn't have insurance or even a valid license; when he hits you, he will sue you for injuries if you appear to have insurance and an income over 30K. The truck driver is proud of his driving abilities when he spins his truck with 3 patrol cars trailing him and wonders why the officers have him on the ground. (Literally actually something I've seen.) A young guy with an earring in a Corolla in morning traffic with dents thinks he is Max Verstappen and drives like it, and knows his 4 banger is twice the car you have, regardless of the badge on or age of your car; rest assured he is going to get to the next traffic jam before you. A Chrysler 300 needs to have fancy rims by law and almost certainly will be burning oil once it gets to 5 years; the driver is proud of his Bentley and talks to you incessantly about his engine as you notice the oil refinery smell.

I don’t understand those cars at all. They’re simply too heavy so any power they make is wasted once you hit a technical mountain road…

That Mitsubishi Mirage is the Space Star in other markets, isn't it? I know someone here in Germany that actually bought that thing brand new for like 15.000€+ and continued to put these 1980s door protector + reflector things on it :D Mitsubishi should send a medal to him as the most loyal customer or something.

Don't remember where I heard or read it, but supposedly the old Hondas with highbeams issue is actually that they put the wrong projector bulbs into their headlight housings so they spew bright light everywhere AND are impossible to see the road with since there is no focus... Don't quote me though since I don't remember the source

I find it interesting how much the image of certain cars differs between the UK and US. A regular Golf in the UK says literally nothing about you, positive or negative. A GTI might illicit a raised eyebrow of mild approval and a Golf R is either stolen, about to be stolen or being used in the process of unlawfully acquiring goods without payment

The channel you are talking about with the Aussies is YeahMad. I love them as well. Also I may be slow but I don’t find the Elantra N nearly as revolting as you guys. I almost bought one, but I am still scared of their motors. I have a ticking Hyundai in my body shop once a week. So I went with a BRZ instead. Much better. Idk what a head gasket even is.

Great episode! In Toronto the Toyota driver holds the crown and is always in your way! Most Subaru drivers in Canada are people who can't afford a good quality SUV (Prices continue to rise) and buy the Subaru's for there 4wd system. There also better on gas that the big SUV's. I have a Wrangler for daily driving and trips to the cottage. I like it because to me it's Classless.

We have 3 cars in our household.
    18 Honda Odyssey
    23 Tesla Model Y
    14 Porsche Cayman S
I am not sure how these are perceived.
I think some brands are so large, it is hard to generalize. For example Ford Mustang vs Ford Escape are two different stereotypes IMO.

Y'all know that the best selling vehicle line in the US is the wide variety of C/K trucks from GM right (and before you say F150, Ford includes 250 350 450 550..... in that number, so I am including Silverado and the GMC variant)... you say Chevy you you should be thinking truck.

10:18 The problem with this is that Hellcats are insanely expensive in the Netherlands. Firstly, they don't sell them here so you'd have to grey market import one. And second, we have vehicle purchase taxes based on emissions... I think that says enough :P
The cheapest Hellcat here is about €150,000 (US$160,000)

For me... CRVs take first place (since no one seems to drive Suburas here). Nearly always in the left lane going slow, blocking traffic while pacing a semi in the right lane, they hate life, hate driving, completely checked out. On our typical travel for the holidays back to the IA from NC (2,000+ miles round trip) these things stand out beyond all other vehicles. When we see the left lane backed up the car at the front of the lane holding everyone up is 80% of the time a CRV.

I don't normally go 90 mph on the highway, but when I do it's because someone is left lane hogging for a long time and I don't want to miss my chance. So here I go, dropping my Miata into 2nd gear rev match we need too acceleration! Zoom, gear change! Going past!

I recall your IG post on this car and being remiss that you couldn't drive the stick-- if I lived in the CA section of the country (or you end up in NJ at some point by chance) I'd be happy to let you drive mine!
I know, I know-- it's just an offer you CAN'T refuse lmao
