    Your car is an avatar, and you're being judged on it. Jason and Derek laugh their way through their own offensiveness, giving honest reactions to how they consider drivers of different brands of cars. This is episode #2, going reverse-alphabetically through the list of manufacturers from Volvo to Kia.

    The Chrysler van thing is accurate. We had a 2006 town and country as a company car that, on the day we were moving, decided that it should both have the transmission and the door latch go out simultaneously. Loaded the van up with stuff, made 1 trip from the old house to the new house. On the way back, the door latch decided enough was enough. Parked back at the old place, and couldn't get it out of park after that. It left on a flatbed, and Chrysler took it back.

      My wife's 2013 T&C has only needed an oil filter housing leak repaired, an alternator and battery, the usual suspension stuff like sway bar links and struts, and obviously brakes. Original transmission, and I towed a 12 foot snowmobile trailer with it. It currently has 180,000 miles. The only thing that truly stinks about it is the rust issue, which is beyond egregious. I wouldn't recommend one to anyone who drives in the rust belt. Other than that, it's been great.

    A couple of inputs from a non butt hurt viewer:
    1. Porsche Cayman S 6MT- I bought it (European Delivery-what a great adventure!) after years of relentless media proclimations of its driving goodness. I drive the snot out of it on a regular basis out in the country, and really wind it out on several annual trips to the Smokies and West Virginia boonies. I care not one whit of what others may or may think of me driving a Porsche. In fact, I wish it was invisible so I could drive with impunity.
    2. For daily use in our household, we have three Lexus hybrids: an ES and two NXs. Nothing exciting, but they just plain work! Over nearly 30 years of Lexus ownership, have NEVER had to get anything repaired. Regular maintenance only. We tend to keep them for over a decade. Softly suspended sure, but nicely appointed inside and when you twist the knob from Eco to Sport, they jet off from the stoplight. A very rational purchase.
    I love your youtube videocast (as I do all of the Commisa Hagerty videos), making it a part of my every Monday. I am frankly astounded that you only have 23.8K subscribers. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    @Jason we actually had this conversation at a mutual friend's house a number of years ago regarding my 2 vehicles. After years of multiple German wagons, several GTIs (including a Mk4 R32) and a couple sedans, in 2019/2020 I bought a (gasp!) 2 liter Macan, and a MX-5 RF. I get the shade that's thrown at both - the 2.0 Macan isn't a 'real' Porsche and the RF isn't as pure as the roadster, but here's the deal: I need one vehicle that can regularly haul a dog, a drum kit, bags of mulch etc. and I live in Michigan. The options for new euro wagons at the time was essentially limited to the A4 allroad and The Macan is so much better to drive it was no contest, despite my reluctance to buy an SUV. In terms of the engine, handling is WAY more important to me than acceleration and I just couldn't justify the additional $ for the S when I drove it. In terms of the RF vs. the roadster - one word: Michigan. I put Blizzaks on it and drive it all year.

    Amongst Americans and Canadians with a net worth over $1 million the 2 most popular vehicles are F-150 and Camry. I'd imagine the Camry has been supplanted by Highlander, I read that statistic several years ago. I'd imagine the popularity of the Golf amongst the wealthy in Europe is similar. Popular cars are popular regardless of socioeconomic status.
    I like Lincoln, it's the only luxury brand not pretending to do sporty. The Nautilus has the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in, they're better than La-Z-Boy.

    • @LeoKull
      @LeoKull 2 месяца назад

      I live in Germany and the Golf is more middle class. Richer people drive BMW/Audi/Mercedes, because as Jason said before, those brands are pretty normal here and not necessarily a luxury product. At least that is my observation.

    • @lairdinho
      @lairdinho 2 месяца назад

      You're setting your net worth barrier far too low. Net worth in the $1million and a little more range generally involves people with one house worth 50%-plus of that net worth, a few other assets and not necessarily a terribly large income. They're the meat of the fairly normal middle class. So, yeah, they drive Camrys, but they're not wealthy and provide no insight in what the wealthy buy. And of course there are lots (and lots!) more of them than there are genuinely wealthy with $100 million or whatever. So a survey of people with a net worth "over $1 million" will mainly tell you what people at the bottom end of that scale buy. Wealthy people in the US don't buy Camrys. Popular cars are not popular regardless of socioeconomic status.

    Pole here - VW in here is synonymus with typical poorer guy 'from the village' who bought old and used Golf and thinks he has the best car in the world. They are overpriced to what they seem to be, but actually probably worth the money. Also, you can say they are poor man's BMW, which has reputation of being a criminal's car in all price class (old and used driven by young shoplifers and hooligans, newer by mafia). BMW drivers never use indicators (that's a fact). Mustangs are also common here now, and they were bought by every even remotely more successful person who always wanted something loud and american - I already hate those guys, they are revving those engines in city centres at night. They are also regularly crashing them, just like in the US. Porsche 911 is a wet dream of almost every person even remotly interested in cars, so not much difference here as well, but Cayenne's are also common as a fleet car which is ridiculous, because they are so expensive. I think this milking of a brand might bite them in the ass, just like it starts to bite Mercedes, that's a different story tho. But I think german cars are generally much more common here and even though they are still upmarket, they are definetly not in such high regard as they are in US (especially Audis). It's similar to Lincoln or Cadillac in here, which are legendary and synonymous with luxury, because of American movies and the fact that they are just so huge (and also because people don't know they are poorly made - we just didn't have those cars until now). Japanese cars - very similar i would say. Only Mazda has reputation of being a rust bucket, and equivalent to Ford, which is also true xD.
    In Poland people think high of former british cars, but maybe because we mostly have more upmarket brands from them, and to be fair, only those survived, so that's understandable. But yeah, cars like Jaguars have reputation for being beautiful, luxorious bunch of problems which are worthless after few years. Similar to Italian brands, but replace 'luxury' with 'sportiness' and add some less upmarket brands like Fiat, but perception stays the same. ....And of course I started ranting about brands perception, not drivers, just like you :D so - italian cars are driven by fashion contious people, and british by older guys who think they can afford them, but they really can't, but they realise that only after 3rd failure in 1st month of ownership. Volvo is very similar to US, Saabs have reputation of being driven by doctors and architects.
    Ok, if you want some specific brand I didn't mention, just comment here, I will try to write something about it. Also as a disclamer - this is one person's opinion and It might differ within people even in the same country, so be respectful if you are also from mid-eastern Europe and you don't really agree with me ;) Let's have a conversation.

    • @pdcichosz

      People think highly of former British cars? Never heard that. Jags are nonexistent, LR/RR as popular as anywhere, the same goes for Bentleys. I'd say we just love opulence and formerly British brands happen to cater to this preference.

      @@deXXXXter2 What I meant by that was there doesn't seem to be any difference between the way people look at LR/RR (='ex-British brand') here compared to anywhere else on the planet.
      American cars *I think* have an appeal for a certain demographic that grew up with the American Dream, younger people don't really care for them and the only American cars I can think of that are on sale today are trucks & Mustangs. The latter being the only affordable obnoxious RWD that makes you look richer than you really are and the former a very niche product.

    My mom is the core Volvo buyer: Bostonian with a $70k car who doesn't want people to know she drives a $70k car. She hates pretentiousness, she hates showy. She values quality, and craftsmanship and safety. She has friends with a Bently or Rolls and she makes fun of them for trying too hard. Her car is beautiful, but it won't get me laid.

    Well, I’m within 10 days or so of being the same age as Cammisa, but from ages 6-36 lived in Texas. And maybe it was having the port of Houston as a center for vehicle importation, but there were a fair number of foreign cars in the state when I was growing up. Peugeot 505s were, maybe not common, but certainly there were enough of them around that I recognized them. Renault Fuegos weren’t terribly uncommon either.
    And for what it’s worth, perceptions of those who chose certain vehicles seem to have been pretty similar to what they would have been on the coasts.
    When we moved to Dallas in the mid-‘80s, the absolute must-have, it-car for the yuppie crowd was a red Porsche 944. They were everywhere for two years, then disappeared once the leases were up.
    Lots of Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans as everyday cars. There wasn’t much of a stigma about buying a car from “not America.” E30s took over from the 944 later in the ‘80s, but people with real money bought Mercedes W124s and W126s until Lexus came along in the ‘90s. You started to see more of a mix after that, with E34s, E39s, and E38s also getting popular as the decade progressed.
    Saabs and Volvos were owned by exactly the kind of people you would expect to own them. Water-cooled VWs weren’t terribly popular there, seemed like more of an East Coast thing, at least among the tuner crowd. But Cal-look bugs and Ghias were pretty big into about the mid-‘90s, and Jettas and Cabrios were, again, driven by exactly who you think they were.
    Overall, Texas felt a lot more similar to California than middle America when it came to car culture. At least it did back then. It’s been a while now since I’ve spent much time there.

    I am surprised the B13 SE-R has not started to ascend to the desirability we now see for the Hondas of the same era. It is amazing how good they are with simple modifications.

      It's probably because they're insanely hard to find in good shape. The mothballed black one on BaT recently seemed to garner some good hype behind it...but the B13 in general is pretty legendary, especially in Mexico where it was made up until 2017 (unfortunately no SR powered ones that recent).

    I bought an '09 Altima in '15 for $10k. I beat the crap out of that thing for almost 9 years, running it up to 200k with no issues. In the end a drunk driver wrecked it while it as parked on the street, but the car was so reliable I decided Nissan earned another go around, so I bought a Frontier. I'm not a car person, I just want something that does the job reliably and affordably and I imagine its the same for the majority of car owners.

    When you got to VW, I was hoping you were going to mention the Arteon. They're one of two European built models sold in the U.S.A., with its GolfR engine, enough space to replace an SUV and it's a clandestine hatchback. I picture a driver that doesn't want the pretentiousness of an Audi (A5SB, A7), hates douchy BMW drivers, maybe outgrew a GTI/R, but wants something very distinctive, clean and beautiful. I think that would be me:) I still drive my Euro built CC that my daughter will inherit. (You nailed the daughter/Jetta thing but it's a CC and she loves it.) Great job guys.

    In Korea, Kia is regarded as a more conventionally designed Hyundai. For example, Sonata often has a polarizing design while the K5 has a more safe design. On top of that, Kia also has Genesis equivalents for those who doesn't even want the prestige of Genesis. (Genesis is more highly regarded and thus rather flashy in the Korean corporate world.)
    Simply put, Kia has Toyota Century, while Hyundai has Lexus

    The " people that have no other option" moniker does not apply to Nissan.
    There's a very particular person buying a 10-year-old Altima, Don't get me wrong, but the rogue is regarded as being competitive for its segment.
    I hesitate to call the versa a good car by any measure of the word, but Nissan made leaps and bounds and improving it. It's sad to see the current z just be a part spin special of an infiniti engine with a 10-year-old platform, but the entire brand is not big Altima energy. By the way, the current Altima is easily the most attractive of the Japanese family Sedans
