Mike Makes a CUSTOM Apple Watch Charging Stand

  • Ryan Parker just bought an Apple Watch and wanted to make a charging station to hold it next to his iPhone. We designed this stand together and made it from layered wood (black walnut) and UMHW plastic.
    It uses the magnet from the Watch charger to hold it horizontally next to his phone and will be able to display the time ( Watch OS 2). Next week we plan on adding LED lights to the base so that the white plastic illuminates when it's plugged in!
    Overall this project came out WAY more professional than my expectations. The finished product looks and feels solid.

    Very nice. I got some extra cord so i might try one for mine and wife's phone.
    One thing i would have suggested is use flush mount screws to bottom so if have to get a new cord.

    Always respect your power tools kids, not saying he didn’t, just a sober reminder even small pieces can cause a lot of damage.

    Pro tip:
    NEVER use the fence when making crosscuts - always use a miter gauge when cutting across the grain of wood to avoid kickback on a table saw. Good luck and safe travels for anyone who might attempt this 👍🏻

    The first thought I had when I saw you use the table saw was "use a riving knife" I've been woodworking for years. Table saw injuries are horrible. I'm glad your injuries were minimal.

    +Mike and Lauren Curious where you guys went with splicing the wires to only use 1 plug later on. If I am not mistaken the iPhone 6 and forward support fast charge allowing you to charge your iPhone at 2 amps vs the regular 1amp or 500ma. Add that to whatever current the apple watch draws (I would guess between 500ma and 1amp) and you'll find yourself wanting a USB power block capable of producing 3amps through a single port if you want the fastest charge the phone is capable of.
    Look forward to hearing what you guys did! Cheers, and great video! also subscribed ;)

    • @MikeAndLaurenTV

      Felix Blaquiere The plastic was 1/2 inch. And we just cut the wood underneath and put the LED next to the plastic.

    Would be much better if you hide the cabels for the iWatch charging unit ...

  • @MikeDold
    @MikeDold 8 лет назад

    Pretty awesome, only a couple small suggestions, you should have future-proofed it because now it's limited to only an iPhone that size, you can't get a bigger iPhone in the future or one that is thicker or possibly even thinner, also I think you should have hidden the watch cable to give it a clean front look, but that's just my opinion, still very nice

  • @CeciDJing
    @CeciDJing 7 лет назад

    That weird plastic is HDPE (High-density polyethylene) I believe it's the same thing that milk jugs are made of. Recycle number 2.

    • @theprofessionalkid
      @theprofessionalkid 9 лет назад

      What We Made Ultra-High Molecular Weight is a polyethylene, little different then High-Density, but pretty close. I would have preferred to use King StarBoard (a HDPE) instead of the UHMW. Cleaner look. I'll be doing mine totally out of StarBoard I think, probably sandwich two different colors. You can't clue HDPE well so I'll probably screw from the bottom.

    nice work Mike👌 why don't you use a riving nife?

    • @mb3581
      @mb3581 9 лет назад +1

      Martijn Fransen While a riving knife is a good safety feature for preventing kickback, I don't think it would have helped with something that small. They are used to keep a board that you're ripping from pinching the blade on the back side of the cut.

    • @glenf4115
      @glenf4115 8 лет назад

      The riving knife is exactly what this is for. To prevent the work piece from slipping behind the blade and getting launched at you. As soon as I saw your first table saw cut I said out loud 'where is the riving knife?' and then I saw you again with black eyes and knew what happened immediately. Make a cross cut sled for small pieces and use the riving knife when not using the sled. I hope you are still alive to be reading this post.
