Fun fact about Scrat the sabertooth squirrel: it was supposed to be completely made up. They just created something that potentially could've existed back during the ice age.
Sure enough, come years later after the movies were made, it's discovered the sabertooth squirrel did in fact exist.

@@c5l6t4 I originally thought that too, but looking back it makes more sense Manny lost his wife and son, especially in Ice Age 2 when Diego asks why Manny won't try and court Ellie, and he replies, "... My family."

Soto knows that taking the baby would hurt the father more than just outright killing him directly. Look at Manny, his story reflects this.
Its implied that the mother drowned after using all her strength to push her baby out of the water and once she knew he was safe, she just let the current take her
I didn’t think she drowned, she was near enough to shore to keep above water. I saw it as her succumbing to the injuries she got in jumping over the falls.

Theory
it can be assumed that the death of Manny's family took place not too long before the beginning of the film. And what's the first thing we see Manny doing? Heading in the opposite direction of everyone else, towards the freezing wasteland of inevitable death.
What's more, the very next scene shows him where else but at the edge of a cliff. He was potentially considering committing sui***e [censored just in case], and had it not been for Sid's arrival, he probably would've went and done it.
He did fall off the cliff, but at least he managed to slide down the ledge with minimal harm, as opposed to tumbling down and such.
Sid saved Manny
Can we just admire the human father, he was searching EVERYWHERE FOR HIS KID. IN REVENGE OR NOT.
True that. But then the father and his tribe came to the conclusion that his wife and son were both dead right before Manny and Sid showed up with the baby
It’s a pity to think about how the Dodo’s really went extinct (over-harvesting, losing their habitat, and losing competitions with other animals). Though, it’s pretty fun to see these birds being used in Ice Age in a comedic manner.
Although Dodos aren’t stupid, they’re intelligent and yet docile animals who are unfamiliar with invasive species, like humans, and if they’re alive today, they’ll make good pets.
Dodos were actually pushed to extinction by Dogs, not just the humans. Dodos had no natural predators so they would never run or hide or anything, so when humans and their dogs showed up, it was a death sentence.

Humans were one of the big reasons they died out. Dodos werent scared of humans and couldnt fly due to eating rocks to help digest. So they were easy to capture
20:24 It's called "rock art", usually found in caves and I think they are expressions of how early humans lived, usually depicting what they did, what they ate, etc.

The German voice actor for Sid, Otto Waalkes, also voices Mushu in Mulan and the Grinch in Grinch(2018), which makes hearing him as Grinch extremely funny because of how absurd hearing the Grinch with Sids voice is

Long time I thought Sid's and Olaf's (Frozen) German voice actor are the same because of the same humor and energy. Was really surprised that Olaf's is hape Kerkeling....

Yes, when they saw the cave paintings- that WAS Manny’s actual family history. *That* is why he is alone, and why he’s so moody (and note his [non]response when Sid asks him if he has a family).
Also- there’s just something about the way Diego is so quick to notice Manny’s reaction, understand what it means, and shush Sid, that I find... touching. The mammoth’s later saving his life, and the kid’s choosing to walk to him with his first steps, also had a lot to do with Sid’s change of heart, but this, I believe, was the real _start_ of it.
And that is why he is suicidal.. 😬😬😬

Not in this film at least; I am not too familiar with the sequels.
@@StoryMing When all the animals migrate to survive, Manny follows the opposite path. His goal clearly, is not survival. But he does not intend to die of starvation. Sid finds him on the edge of a cliff. They both saved the other's life in this encounter. It is very dark and the most people don't get it.

Huh. Interesting.
I had never gotten the sense before that Manny actually wanted to end his life- just that (like Shrek) he was withdrawing to an inhospitable environment so he could be left alone.
- But if that was the aim, then I would say it was not a particularly effective plan, given that he and Sid both actually did fall over that cliff and were not even badly hurt by it.
the squirrel has the biggest plot armour, even bigger than jerry (tom and jerry), it never dies.
Actually Tom is the one who gets most of the punishment in Tom and Jerry.
To answer your question, the cave paintings are called Petroglyphs.
Always found it amusing they went from Old Faithful in Yellowstone to Stonehenge in England in under a day…
Cave paintings and petroglyphs are not the same thing. Petroplyphs are rock carvings.

I only realised when Bruno says the line "you wrecked my vision cave". That's what made me recognise the actor was Sid's voice.
Manny is the mammoth that lost his family to hunters😭😭 but he saved the hunter’s child which is soooo beautiful 😂😘 loved the video Tim ❤️
Totally agree, Scratt the Squirrel and Sid are the best characters of this saga. I think also you’ll like an another character from Ice Age 3, which is also my favourite, but 🤫🤫 NO SPOILERS

Honestly this movie is so much better than its sequels. It has so much heart and such a timeless sense of humour. Def one of my faves!
That's with just about first movie in a franchise; it's always the best. However, I have to say, the third one is my favorite, and the second one has my favorite scene in the entire franchise.

I totally agree! For me it's the best one. I just love the character development of Diego and the big heart of Manni. Humans killed his family but he brings back a human child to the father. This is so amazing and that fact alone is the reason why Manni is my favorite character
@@loisthehedgehog7658 2+ kind of rely on less timeless humour, write out a lot between each other, and overall just give a far less fully rounded movie compared to the first one. Not that the sequels are bad necessarily, just that the first is just better.

The whole beginning of this movie with Scrat and the Ice was what we used to show off our surround system back in the day. The sound effects and cracking were done really well and came across perfectly all around you
If the opening scene w/ Scrat wasn’t there, the first snow wouldn’t be until like halfway through the movie. Which is funny for a film called “ice” age.

Admittedly, Diego was originally going to die at the end...but test viewings with kids made it known that his death devastated the kids too much and they brought him back for the final cut.
The squirrel is basically immortal
When I watched the moment of the death of Manny's family, I cried when I watched the moment of death (albeit later than the survivor) Diego I cried when I watched the moment of the separation of the baby and dad with animals I cried, Damn it is the most touching cartoon in my life!
I remember seeing this in the cinema with a friend. I wanted to see something else but she chose this one. It was still the early stages in animation for these types of films with Disney and Dreamworks being the standouts, and I remember thinking it was going to be too kiddie, but I loved it. The humour, writing and performances were so good. I knew John Leguizamo from Baz Luhrmanns Romeo and Juliet (great film if you haven't seen it), so to see/hear him playing Sid was pretty interesting. Sid is the best thing about these movies but the rest of the characters are great too, including Scrat.
The family on the painting was Manfred's family, that's what happened to them. They were killed by hunters, that's why he was so moody in the beginning.
Lol when Sid says “they do this every year” he’s referring to his family abandoning him, not the ice age
I absolutely love this franchise. I used to binge the movies as a kid non-stop. That said, people don't like the sequels as they tend to compare them to the first. In my opinion, they are still rather enjoyable, and do their job as a kids movie. Now, I will say that the first, while not my favorite, is definitely the best in the franchise. However, that's nothing new, as just about every first movie is the best in any given franchise.
Also, I love the soundtrack of this movie, it reminds me of Thomas Newman, my favorite composer of all time, but then again, this soundtrack is composed by his brother, David Newman

Fun fact about Scrat : He was voiced by Chris Wedge, the director. You should check out the recording sessions, Chris Wedge even mentioned how hard on the throat it was.
Also, seems to me like you didn't quite get the part about Manny's family right : He apparently had a female and a child but they got killed. That's what makes him so distant and unwilling to befriend anyone.
Man this movie got an Oscar nomination, and only lost to spirited away (which is a must watch by the way actually every gibli movie is a must watch) , and the animation is pretty impressive for its time , maybe is the character design and the environment that make it look kinda greety, but it's definitely a solid 3d animation for the period

Those weren't hieroglyphs, they were just cave paintings, also known as pictographs.
I love the first Ice Age. Its nostalgic and though the animation isn't up to par with today, I think its pretty good. It was the first animated feature film from Blue Sky Studios, which has since been closed down because Disney bought Fox. Scrat the squirrel is of course my favorite character. He's basically a Looney Tunes character in a CGI movie. You will see him a lot :)
So to answer your question, Manny is grumpy because he lost his wife and lost his kid. Meaning hunters killed them both

Agreed. SCRAT is the best characters for the little time he’s actually in the movies he does make the biggest impacts. I remember roaring with laughter in the movies the first time he came on as I’d never seen anything like him.

Scrat, the squirrel, has his own movie and several video games. Hes a fan favorite.
Whats funny is Dodos were never as stupid as media portrays them. They just were very friendly and unafraid, often walking right up to human explorers. Which we thought was stupid cause it made it easier to kill them, which led to their extinction. In reality we could of had dodos as friendly, social pets if we didnt kill them off.

Ah, the crown jewel of Blue Sky Studios. There're no bad Ice Age movies as long as there's Scrat(who's about the journey with acorns not the destination, destination being his tummy). 😉 Can't wait till you finish the franchise(you'll meet Sid's family in movie no. 4). 🙂
The voice actor for Sid, John Leguizamo, had no idea at first what kind of voice he was gonna do for Sid, at first he thought maybe an indian voice (actual indian, not native american). But then he heard the voice of a vegetable stand salesman's voice & he knew immediately that he has found the voice for Sid.
Awwwww Ice Age is amazing and hilarious! I absolutely love Manny, Diego and Sid (weirdest herd ever! 😂) but that squirrel… kills me.. I get that same twitch in my eye when I know I screwed up hahahaha this was a very nice surprise! 👍🏼
Fun fact: I recently found out that Ice Age was originally gonna be traditionally animated before becoming computer animated. Knowing that, I sometimes can’t help but wonder how it would look in 2D animation

The family is Manfred family, they got killed by the hunters, the reason Manfred was walking the opposite way of the Migrations was to die from the cold, but Sid saved him

This movie is so amazing, especially two things I like the most:
First: Manny is such an incredible character: humans killed his wife and his child and he still brings a human child back to the father, just fantastic!
And second: when the father gives the necklace of his wife to Manny. He gives the only thing that reminds him of his wife to the one who has brought him the most important.
I don't know, but even as a kid I always found these two facts magical and just wonderful!
But one thing makes me really sad, everytime I'm thinking about it (little SPOILER for the next movies):
Manny won't wear the necklace in the other movies :( If he would, that would make my second favourite scene much more heartwarming!!
Scrat (the sabor tooth rat squirrel mix) is always funny and probably mainly comedic relief but still good

The cave painting was of Manny‘s first wife and first child
The writing was on the wall... literally! Those cave paintings revealed why Manny has been acting jerk-like for a while, because he's traumatized by the death of his wife and son. But, with everything with the infant, he now realizes that not all humans are bad - hopefully the ones that killed his family were not part of the baby's tribe.

Lol, Scrat is one of my favourite things about the franchise. Even in the worst of them("Collision Course", which I don't recommend), I enjoy watching his neverending chase for the acorn.
Sid is voiced by John Leguizamo(Bruno from "Encanto"). The long scene of him trying to get comfy is definitely me trying to get to sleep, XD!
Ironically, each of the frozen creatures set up for some of the sequels(fish for "The Meltdown", T-Rex for "Dawn of the Dinosaurs", UFO for "Collision Course").
There are some theories Manny is going north because he has a death wish after his wife and child died. This movie is also about him finding forgiveness for the humans, who were responsible(though most likely not the same tribe.)

Great Reaction! Ice Age is also one of my all time favorite animated movie from Blue Sky Studio as I enjoyed every moments within this movie and I would put Ice Age with Shrek along with Toy Story.

Ice Age came out when I was 2 years old so it was one of the first movies I had ever seen in my life. Ever since then, I’ve gone to the theaters to see every new installment until the series finally ended.

When i First saw Ice Age, it was a time to be alive, like i immediately adored this ENTIRE Film franchise in My Heart and i really loved it, i rewatched all 4 of the films but i just needed to finish the 5th movie, when i first watched the 5th Ice Age film, i had finished the ENTIRE Ice Age franchise with all my beloved childhood finally on the shelf of completion i still Love this film to this day :>

I Like The Ice Slide Scene When I Was A Little Kid
He’s not trying to eat it because he’s trying to start for the winter either that or he’s in love with it and doesn’t want to eat it
Damn Ice Age 1 is iconic classic, second comes Ice Age 3. These 2 movies are really great in the franchise. The rest doesn't have that charm but they're still entertaining. Unlike others I don't think the 5th movie was bad. I think it did a fine job at getting all 3 characters their happy endings. The story was about the 3 unexpected friends who found a herd and found each of their own happiness respectively. I'm looking forward for your reaction on the sequels and trust me as long as Scrat is there in each movie, you'll enjoy it.
