      @@gopolanglekoto2019 world cup we beat them 19 - 16 in the semis and we were lucky there. So why not? They don't lose by 50..they lose by a bounce of the ball. That changes with momentum and believe

      @@dn822 And we beat them by an even bigger margin over the weekend. 2019 is 5 years ago now. How long are they “rebuilding”? They had 2 World Cups to rebuild already. SA rebuilds every 2 years ready for next World Cup. I don’t think Wales is getting better, my friend. I think things are stale there because of Warren Gatland and it’s a shame. They should release him and truly start rebuilding.

    An honest and well informed comment on the Wales performance against South Africa. You highlight our key problem - there is no sign of any clear structure or consistent pattern of play emerging. Against the Springboks we just played damage limitation rugby. The Australia tour is now hugely important. We need to see a marked improvement in quality and two victories from the three tour matches.

    I'm South African with a rather diluted drop of 1820 Welsh in my veins. Don't punish yourselves so, it's not necessary. These are vastly inexperienced players and they will grow and become a world class factor again! I mean, Etzebeth for instance has more test matches under his belt than the whole of your scrum together. Give your guys a break, give them a couple of seasons to develop. ... and let rugby in Wales win!

    A few things to note: Wales missed an absolute sitter of a try, Winnett should have scored in the corner, and South Africa were handed a try that was clearly forward - and this try in my mind was what began to unravel the Welsh team. The gap should have been 34-20 to South Africa, which is a realistic representation of how the teams performed on the day.
    The soft tries given by Wales through a simple lack of defensive structure needs fixing, and realistically this will be a lot better if players are played in position, and when Wales have a full squad to select from, as unlike SA, we don't have anywhere near the amount of options to select from.
    The scrum is an issue for Wales, but then again it is for most teams against SA. I don't think there is an answer to this problem without expanding our population from 3 million to around 10x that number, or by bringing in foreign players under residency rules, like Ireland and Scotland have do. This is probably one of the leading causes of the recent changes to the scrum, and is an issue that World Rugby needs to find solutions to, as scrums are overly determinant of the end result, especially in crunch games like World Cup knock-out games.
    Is Gatland losing the changing room? I don't personally think so, but his choice of players is peculiar to say the least. He needs to select more in-form club players for sure.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  17 дней назад

      Yeah, I think your point is fair. South Africa certainly had the rub of the green with the officials. Having said that they also made a lot of mistakes and they discipline was poor and realistically the only chances we created were off South Africa mistakes not anything we made ourselves.
      I really hope Scotland can pull it back because I do really love him as a fan of Welsh rugby and of course I want to see him succeed and I’ve always been a big defender of him. It’s just recently he’s been making very strange decisions and it’s hard to see , what the end goal is? I just hope the players can see it better than I can
      Cheers for your comment. Really interesting to read.👍🏼

    As a South African and Springbok supporter I have no liking for Warren Gatland, HOWEVER, don't judge him too harshly. His records speak for itself. He has a keen eye for talent, and he is rebuilding now. Just remember that it is not going to be an overnight fix. The players are VERY INEXPERIENCED at international level. They will need time to play together, to build trust and to create that bonds that will make them gel. Wales will become a force again. Give him the time to build that. Judge him by the next world cup. As despondent as the Wales supporters feel now, they will rejoice again. There is a lot of problems in WRU, the best players is mostly not available. WRU needs to change the eligibility rules so that all Wales players qualify. Warren Gatland's hands are tied, and should he fail, it wouldn't be his fault.

    Great vid as usual mate. You definitely know welsh rugby. As others have said i think Gatland and Wales could definitely listen to you for some different insight into welsh rugby. They, and we, would really benefit from it IMO.
    I was at Twickenham yesterday and really enjoyed the rugby. I was very happy with the half time score line. Seeing the line out actually function was a good improvement. I thought Dewi Lake (the moisest man in rugby 😉) had a good game and was a great skipper. That said...
    As you said Wales looked very disjointed, defense was semi-pouros, kicking was not good to put it politely, the scrum got dominated but tbf that was to be expected and there didnt seem to be an actual game plan on the attack. I like to positive and I'm sure there are things going on behind the scenes I have no idea about. I hope those things are positive instead of negative. The situation with Sam and not even being given full kit is very worrying though. That should not be happening. And I as civilian should never know about. Publicly known camp drama is never a good sign of things.

      @TheWelshSportsPodcast it very much felt like an away game. It seemed like there were probably 10 to 1 people supporting SA vs. Wales. At least around me, like 30% of the people supporting SA, actually English, haha to be expected. But the Welsh fans were very loud and very proud.
      The saffa fans were awesome. Really good Craig. After the game two different groups of South Africanns came up to us and said basically the exact same thing "tons of respect to Wales they never quit, they never surrender and the never go away. They aren't like Scotland or England. When you play Wales you are in fight for the full 80." That put a smile on my face.

  • @samothemano
    @samothemano 17 дней назад +1

    Hey bro! Fantastic review as always!
    The shoreline was actually more flattering towards us than I expected but the performance was absolute hoop. Only 1 clean line break, basic handling errors, horrendous decision making in attack and numerous other facets of the game made us look like a tier 2 team.
    Costelow is NOT the guy for us. He does naff all. Give him the boot and let Beetham have a go.
    I think people saw in this game what I’ve said about Winnet from the start. He offers zero in attack. He’s very much like halfpenny in that he is fairly solid under the high ball but that is literally it. In attack we play with 14 men.
    Grady is probably the best winger in Wales. PLAY HIM ON THE WING. Get Eddie James in the centre. He looked alright when he came on in my opinion.
    One thing that’s a positive is Dewi lake. He proved that he is a quality player. The drop off from him to our 2nd choice hooker (whoever the hell that is) is massive.
    Our props are garbage. They got lucky that the ref didn’t penalise them at every scrum. I don’t think they took a forward step at all.
    Gareth Davies has totally lost it. Fumbling the ball at the base of rucks, EVERY box kick was way too long and that little chip
    Into the in goal area when we were on their 5m line was poo. I was screaming at him through my tv for that.
    Gatland has lost the confidence and respect from his players IMO. He has to go because it seems like the boys just don’t want to be involved. Feyi-Waboso choosing England over wales. LRZ leaving for the NFL. Players retiring when they are still the first choice pick in their position. Playing having “breaks” from playing (Elias, Rowlands). And now this thing with Sam Parry. Players should want to drop everything to get another cap and represent Wales. But it seems like the atmosphere is poor in the camp and guys just want to leave.
    I have no idea what to expect from the Aus tour but I know that if we somehow win all 3 games, that’s probably the worst outcome for us in the long run as it further papers over the gaping cracks in the WRU.

      I have to still defend winnet. We didn’t go more than two or three phases max all game. So he’s never gonna get involved in that type of attack. For Cardiff ihe comes into the attack and breaks the line and he’s pretty good at it to be fair.
      I don’t know what the answers are mate. I really wish he brought Dan Edwards into the squad because I don’t think Beetham is the answer at 10 although his kicking looked okay
      Until we get a clear game plan and a platform to playoff I think you could put Dan Carter at 10 and he would look average at the moment , we just don’t create anything or any deception
      Hard to see the road ahead, but we have to just hope that Gatlin pulls out something and we get a couple of wins 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Felt like we did better than expected. After 15 minutes with 2 yellows i thought it could get seriously messy but the team did well to keep it respectful. That being said felt like SA were barely out of 2nd gear and on another day would of really put us to the sword. Thought Liam williams really justified him being back involved his experience alone shone a bit yesterday. Thought Rio dyer had an awful game and didnt even notice Winnent on the pitch.
    Australia are in a real bad mess themselves with the state of rugby union in the country. If we go there and suffer 2 heavy defeats I think alarm bells really need to start ringing. Think we just have to get used to being a very good tier 2 rugby nation for the next few years.

    Nice one Christian, good video for debating! Read one comment 'no coaching in the world will ever make an average player into an international class player' got to disagree with that oneok players need to be able to play but a coach can build that player into a great player! Just need the coaches! Yesterdays result was a lot better than i thought it would be! Thought the players showed immense character and apart from scrum time were ok! Kicking aside!! Felt a lot of decisions went against us when they should of gone our way! Like the deliberate knock on 10m out from SA line when they were a man down by their no8 i think it was! Yellow card all day long was the wprse for me! Bongi's head on head challange no arms was shocking!! Really think Rassie would of made an hour long video after the refs performance yesterday! I certainly feel more upbeat than i did before the match! What we need to realise is that was the strongest SA 23 available for that match and there is no way rassie would of allowed them to be rusty!!

      Yeah, I thought a few of the rest decisions were a bit strange like the ones you highlighted. Also, the studs straight to the head that was red for me too. OK well how do you explain Portugal? Have they got better players than us as well? Because they look like a well-coached team who have worked on skills and yes good players will always beat average players but we weren't just beaten, we were pitiful to watch. That doesn't even happen to tier 2 teams like Portugal. The result is one thing but what Gatland has or rather hasn't done with this team is ridiculous. He can't even be professional and constructive enough to pick his best players. You're not a sage, Warren, you're not a saviour. What’s the deal with the hate on Mathias? The only times I’ve heard you speak about him is just “he’s rubbish”, and with other players if it’s criticism then it sounds measured and fair but with Mathias it just sounds like hate. Give me a reason why he’s rubbish and you want nothing to do with him.
    He’s only 24 so that’s young for a prop and still quite a few years before he reaches his peak, Gats has seemed to bring him in to teach him the ropes, give him some experience and let him learn. If it’s fair then I’m with you but I’m not hearing anything fair so far.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  17 дней назад +1

      If Gats is just brining him to teach him then he shouldn’t be getting as much game time for Wales as he has.
      I have mentioned he’s young before and it takes time, I’ve just seen nothing from him and I think this season he was the most penalised prop at scrum time in the URC. That’s not a great stat🤷🏻‍♂️
      I don’t hate anyone, I’m sure he’s giving 100% all the time I just don’t think he’s good enough and certainly not better than Carre or Nicky smith?

    • @evanmillership6219
      @evanmillership6219 17 дней назад +1

      Yeah I see your point, you just haven’t explained that until now from what I’ve heard.
      I wouldn’t agree that he’s not at this level tho, he looks like he could be a solid player so I’m all for Gats giving him time, but it does really come down to his squad selection. Having Mathias as a 3rd option behind Nicky smith and Domachowski I think would balance the team out more while also giving him some valuable experience. Gats sees something in Mathias, I just hope we get to see him really break through soon.

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  17 дней назад

      In fairness I take your point. I have been very critical of him and maybe I should be a bit more understanding of his age. I looked it up after and he was actually the most penalised player in the whole of the URC so not a good look
      I agree we need to develop young players like him though and thanks for pointing out me not backing up my opinions. I’ll bare that in mind going forward 👍🏼

    To be honest if you'd showed me that scoreline before the game I'd probably have taken it but we were only spared further punishment because of a weak Bok performance.
    The disparity between our team throughout the 2010's and now is evident - throughout the game you could see even in what're surely his last 2 or so years as an international player that Liam Williams is a cut above the rest of the team in attack - he was probably our only player in attack who tried to do anything dynamic even if it didn't always come off. The excuse of "it's a young team" is fine for close loses such as England or Scotland in the Six Nations or even ones where we give it a good go and get a bit unlucky on the scoresheet like we did against Ireland, but not the embarrassing performances like we've had in our last 3 games against France, Italy and now South Africa.

We’re lacking a game plan coz at the moment it’s 2 or 3 carries, barely over the gain line, then scrum half box kick or back to Costelow, 20 yds down field and we lose possession. If Rhys Carre was French or South African he'd have 50 caps by now. And you have to look at where wales stands in the rankings compared to these two teams. The type of NZ coaches we get over here seem to be obsessed with a certain type of robotic "athelete" rather than rugby players. Anyone who seems to not completely fit into the machine is being discarded.
    Gatland did not pick the best players available for the six nations because he was "building for the world cup". Well The world cup is a grand ambition.......but, realistically........not very likely. In the meantime Welsh fans paid a lot of money to watch their country get whitewashed in a competion that holds ancient rivalries that are quite frankly more important to them than the world cup.
    The Ospreys have the only decent pack in Wales yet the likes of Ratti and Sutton were overlooked for the likes of Screech and Hill? The selection of Hill screams cronieism, something Howley and Gatland are kinda renowned for. Just ask Dwayne Peel, Lee Byrne, James Hook, Adam Jones etc. Gatland also has a tendency to heap pressure on players when things aren't going well for them.....for Sam Costelow read Rhys Priestland.
    Why is Nicky Smith ignored? Why is Morgan Morriss' domestic form not rewarded with the opportunity to show if he can add something at this level? What's Alex Kings' role now that Howley has slithered back in?
    Personally I thought we needed something new when Gatlands tenure initially ended. I thought he was poor with the Lions inSouth Africa, he was poor for the Chiefs. But I thought as a short term fix for the world cup he was the best bet. But the fact he was given another 4 years can only be reflected on the complete idiots at the WRU.
    Regardless of the development programne, if we need a stable scrum now......why not call up Tom Botha?

    • @TheWelshSportsPodcast
      @TheWelshSportsPodcast  17 дней назад

      Yeah, agree with everything you said. It’s hard to see what the plan is at the moment. The only thing it seems like he’s doing is pushing in his youngsters to find out who can swim which obviously you have to do when you’re in the position we are but it almost seems like he’s willing to sacrifice a year or two of losses to meet his grand ambition
      The problem is is on the pitch it’s a shambles and there’s no direction. I really hope I’m overreacting but I guess only time will tell we just have totry and back The Boys

    Where do you start, same old problems lack off a tight head lack of creativity, a woeful outside half, lack of leadership, losing is becoming a habit with Wales, you get one or two good performances from individuals but they are not coming together or functioning as a team, its the age old problem we lack quality in depth, Costello is just not international class and had Anscombe or Sheedy been available he would not be playing, and that highlights the problem the quality in out first choice may be good, beneath that the drop off in standards in shocking, Its going to be tough in Australia, then a tough Autumn internationals and to be honest I cannot see us wining any of those games, its case of Wales need to go through the mill till we get to the point where some seeds of hope grow, but its really hard to see where its coming from, I hate being negative and down on my country but on the rugby field there is nowhere to hide, Australia have a point to prove and so have Fiji, and they won't be sympathetic to our demise.

Good to see Liam Williams I thought he played well apart from that we were not at our best but to me it was one sided. I've all ways liked Warren Gatland he is dealing with a new team , the best have gone retired, and has to start all over again this will take a year or two, I'm will Wales all the way in winning and losing they are my team.
