I totally agree, depression definitely needs to be spoken about more and taken more serious then it is. People shouldn't be scared or criticised for not feeling well and it's unfortunate that many people in society expect us to be happy all the time when that's not reality!! We should all be more empathetic towards people if they are struggling because life isn't always easy and one day you might end up depressed about something and feel like you can't speak about it to someone because your afraid of being judged. Unfortunately humans can be very cruel and we need to think more before we act because our behaviour can cause major scars.

My brother was severely depressed and was heavily bullied at school He would take his anger out on me when he got home by physically abusing me and also teasing me mercilessly. As we grew and he acquired guns in his security job he would routinely threaten me with them until I finally had to call the police at 18. When he left our home and married he also beat his wife. I have seen so many more in my 58 years, but I am not going to write a volume here on this message board.

Awesome! Wonderful of you! We need more of that in our schools so that all our young people feel loved and supported. My daughter was especially sensitive to bullying in school and luckily I got her in a high school where it was not tolerated. The whole school faculty at this school in Peoria, AZ is on the same page with regard to their bullying policy and even education on the effects of being bullied is provided so that kids understand what happens to their piers when they are the targets of such abuse. . Schools need to put mental health of students right up there at number 1 with all their academic needs. A child cannot reach her/his full potential in this world without a strong self-esteem.

I have a story to tell.
My favorite uncle self deleted. ( So sad we can’t even use the actual word) He helped raise me and my brothers after our parents were killed by a drunk driver. When my uncle took his own life the first thing everyone said was “They wanted to put him in the nut house.” I replied well if they had, maybe he’d be alive right now. I’ve had depression all my life and I feel it runs in my family, way too much. I actually was so scared by the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, that I was terrified at even the thought of seeking help. But I finally broke down and went. I got help and now I’m so glad I did. There’s 2 more generations of my family that would’ve never been born.
It is so awful that there’s so much stigma worldwide about any kind of mental health.

So I had poor relationship role models, which affected my ability to sustain a lasting relationship. I’m also hyper-vigilant, which means I can read facial expressions and body language like a magician. I believe depression plays a role in many of the true crimes we learn about. I didn’t start talking about it until I was 40 years old. My dad had depression for years too. He developed depression induced psychosis in his late 80s. It’s such a numbness that covers like a blanket, in between real feelings and detached observation.

I think those who are not paying attention could easily get irritated with an instructor if they're not completely engaged. Having dealt with major depression for years myself, I welcome any discussion on it.
I don't know what qualifies as being qualified, but I think being human carries a lot of weight.
The pressure on today's young males is intense. We have a large chuck of the population trying to convince them that being male is toxic, so they have to deny and suppress their nature. Some are even being convinced that they were born into the wrong body, if you can believe it. Nothing good is going to result in that. We're not raising boys to be men anymore; we're teaching them to fear their own masculinity, never realizing that a truly masculine man is NOT toxic. Have a wonderful day, Nick.

His parents specialized in helping people with mental problems, yet they missed it.
Instead of teaching people to notice it, we also need to encourage kids/people who are feeling aline or depressed to open up and talk. We also need to teach people HOW TO GET HELP if they want to talk privately.
Every school should be REQUIRED to post exhaustion/depression/sadness/life's to complicated/I'm lonely hotline.
Most people with depression at that age don't know what "depression " is or they simply think it's not something that would be happening to them.
SCHOOL COUNSELORS need to go back to HELPING kids instead of criticizing them. They need to LISTEN and ABSOLUTELY DONT JUDGE OR DIAGNOSE. If there is ANY concern the counselors should be required to give kids the phone number of a counseling center.
EVERY KID should be required to talk to a counselor at least every 2 months, more often if a problem is a concern.
    Causes
    1. HORMONAL CHANGES
    2. Social media
    3. Lack of knowing hoe to interact in person
    4. Lack of fun conversation with parents.
He was obviously to shy to want to be in school photos. He was bullied so he likely thought he was ugly so avoided photos. I'm guessing his Facebook etc had very few if any selfies.

There are so many reasons for unhappiness, emptiness, powerlessness in our society and if we don't have this discussion that leads to true action, nothing will ever get better. It will only continue to get worse with all the insufficient band-aids being utilized that do nothing to address the causes.

I think those teenage years are quite tough ones and a big change for a lot of young people. Its not surprising that young people get depressed. Social media doesn't help because it can increase anxiety in people who use it, and a lot of young people have an innocent attitude, which can trip them up.
I generally like the benefits of the internet but there are a lot of trolls out there which can abuse people.
I personally think there should be a deep dive into American schools, because this is where these mass murderers are coming from. This isn't the first shooting we've seen and when you look into it there seems to be unchallanged bullying going on, and of course there is a big gun culture, drugs, depression, and who knows what else in the USA. You may have already covered this in your books Nick (which I've not read yet, but I do plan to check them out :)).

I think he'd be a great psychologist/psychiatrist. The youngsters in this country are suffering and the things I've heard while playing an online game ( for nine years) in which youngsters played with people of all ages was horrific and resulted in me calling The Metropolitan Police in London and reporting to their on-line crime dept and spoke with a detective who took all the particulars and it seemed something was done. People's behavior toward children was shocking and I don't think parents understand or know what their kids are up against while playing "a game"on-line. They wouldn't have given it a second thought. I actually really got addicted to this game( the only one I was able to play) and I also got an education. Depression should be talked about. I'm in.

Not just hostile but… one where traits that have been selected for over a very long time are now all of a sudden deemed unnecessary, and our nature deemed taboo and unacceptable. How do you change the animal parts inside of you? It’s not like we asked for them; they’re just there.
With all these things together, I can tell you the ever present ideation that accompanies my MDD is a real treat.
I can completely understand why an outcast, exiled young man like this will go ahead and take actions consistent with believing his life is empty, valueless, and that he will not be missed.

Yes, therein lies the process, Nick. People don't want to talk about depression, let alone do something about it. Young men in particular are not "allowed" to be depressed in our society. It's not "cool" because it's real. More and more, we try to avoid reality. It will be our downfall.

48,000 per year (three quarters men, one quarter women) carry out S every year in USA. Thomas won't appear in next year's stats because he was shot by someone else, but it was effectively S when he took his gun to the rally wasnt it. The most common method is guns. One person dies of S every 11 minutes. If a jumbo jet carries on average 300-500 people, that equates to @160 plane crashes each year. 58,000 soldiers died in the Vietnam War all years, so imagine the collateral of that but happening almost every year. No country's S data is good. Ours isn't in the UK, but what is particularly concerning about USA data is that the rates keep increasing by about 2% year on year, and have done for some time. UK rates are fairly static.

Interesting topic. My 25 yo daughter told me she was taking prozac, or similar... I hit the roof, then I wondered how many of these drugs were being prescribed. The Office of National Statistics (UK) doesn't keep that data?! How shady is that? Just be grateful my daughter can't access a gun. We all hate Mondays.

People have been talking openly about Depression in America since the 1980s. I think it's been covered by health insurance since then also based on diagnosis. Usually treatment includes medication, talk therapy (counseling), diet, sleep, and exercise, and no alcohol. Most people experience a bout of anhedonic depression at some time in their lives. Clinical depression is a very serious condition and can almost incapcitate the person.

I believe it stems from the angst most of us go thru during our adolescent period but then big pharma jumped in and started prescribing drugs to the youngsters. I am not on any drugs but I remember clearly those feelings of angst getting thru the puberty years. Big pharma has intensified the problem. I've watched it so many times.

Good video. The statisitics you mentioned show just how many people must be suffering / hiding it. Also, another important point is finance. We'll all currently living in a high inflationary period with living costs skyrocketing which is really hurting the middle class. Depression is time consuming to fix and most of us haven't got the time or resources to help ourselves let alone others. That goes for doctor's too.

The other big issues are 1) health poverty - people literally unable to access the healthcare they need because of cost; 2) quality - any idiot can book themselves on a crappy CBT or similar training course, get a certificate and wank around calling themselves a counsellor or psychologist. As services get more overwhelmed and the needs of the population grow, these end up being a handy referring (dumping) choice for hard pressed health services; specialist services for children and young people with properly trained practitioners is a particular shortage; and 3) the need for long term support because 6 sessions with a random (underqualified) CBT counsellor often won't cut it. Many people with entrenched depression need good psychological support for years. We should acknowledge these issues, demand better and stop with the 'if only they'd said something' as if saying something was the magic cure for these suffering people. Those noises are just to assuage our own feelings.

I’m not a psych nurse, but a women’s health nurse and I’d say 80-90% of my patients suffer from some sort of mental illness. From depression, to anxiety, PTSD, bipolar, schizophrenia, psychosis, the list seems endless. The statistic saying 29% of Americans have been diagnosed with depression some time in their life seems really low in my experience.

Nick, you could have M.D., Psy.D. etc., etc. after your name and there will still be trolls who will disagree just for the sake of disagreeing.
OF COURSE we should talk about depression. I don’t know what effect growing up with the internet has had on young people. The happiest times of my life were when I was younger. Yes, I had to work very hard but I felt satisfaction from excelling at a demanding job. Maybe I didn’t know any better but it was very rewarding. Now, at age 58 I only work part-time, inflation is outrageous. I’m not depressed but I can see how having one’s time filled with a job you like, being part of that community (working at a large airport) and having things to look forward to keep depression at bay. I had left a hick town to give myself more options. When I left Florida at age 15 and came to Los Angeles it felt like anything was possible. I had grown up in a beautiful, wealthy beach town in South NJ. We were poor but rented year-round. Great people, great schools. When I was 12 my stepdad moved my mom and I to inland Fla where there were little, if any, opportunities for a low income family. My parents barely kept up a running car. There was hardly any public transportation. Moving isn’t always the answer but I believe it’s important to give yourself the best chance at success, whatever success means to you. Washing movie stars dogs in Santa Monica at age 15 was success for me lol. I came to LA with an older friend who had a little girl so being roomates I babysat while she worked at night. Then working at LAX was wonderful. I eventually moved, got a one room apartment close to the beach and close to LAX. After 7 years I got married and went back to school. And bought a house, husband’s dream. I could have lived in an apt my whole life. The choice to buy brought with it a commute. That was depressing! Thats enough of my goofy life. Please keep discussing depression. IMO having things to look forward to is a big help. There are a lot of situations that block that. Getting around negative obstacles seems to be a key part of avoiding depression. 🙏🫶

It’s very sad to see this amongst young people. People didn’t feel so bad when I was younger . Mental health has deteriorated when young people should be in their happiest times.
But can we point out that women suffer more anxiety and depression statistically but don’t lash out and use guns to deal with it. Men suffering is far more dangerous for communities.

When you're younger, the less help for depression you've received, the less techniques you know to help yourself, and the more likely family isn't taking your despair seriously. Those who don't like you to talk about it as a serious contributing factor are ignoring depression and what it can do to a person at their own peril.

The pace of modernity has us all up against it. The reasons are myriad, and the solutions few and insufficient. Some people have more resources, both material and emotional to deal with them. We're screwed, without some widespread shift in human behavior. How's that going to happen. It's depressing.

I sense that the majority will not want to humanize this guy or will like to focus only the the powers allegedly behind because it fits with their narrative and perspectives, and will categorize every emphatic perspective as left and woke…
