When you get bullied a lot in order to handle it sometimes you think to yourself that your better then other to help protect yourself from hating yourself which can easily happen when people are saying terrible things about you.
That’s why this cycle of bullying is so bad.

    • @suezmac3803

I agree. There has to be a defense mechanism to tolerate it. How could his parents not see that?
It's interesting we never hear about the bullies. We never hear the mass murderer was a bully in school & terrorized his/her classmates. I don't believe bullies ever stop bullying. Also, we never hear from the successful individual-"I owe my success to bullying, making ppl cower & give in to MY threats & beliefs." I have met many adult bullies throughout my life.

Can't it be both? It's totally reasonable that people who are mocked and teased can also take that frustration out on anyone they perceive as weaker or more vulnerable. They are just continuing the cycle and trying to vent their own experience in a way that brings the power back to them. Unhealthy, not helpful, but also not surprising.

Not much different from the cycle of abuse. I have 2 cousins who were terrorized and beater by their father, as was their mother, my aunt. One is such a d*ck that it’s almost impossible being around him. The other is as sweet as the day is long. The mean one is the older brother, not sure that matters but 2 boys, abused. Some days I do feel society is more fractured than ever in my lifetime. I've felt a huge shift in many aspects of society, seemingly accelerated by the pandemic. The anger, hate and violence, over even trivial things seems like a new pandemic! Forgiveness, understanding and civility seem like unfathomable concepts. The race to the bottom seems well underway more days than not 😔.

I would actually date it back to the financial crash (2009 was it?). Resources for the masses got smaller, public resources shrunk, the gig economy came, and life got harder for a lot of folk. Brutal even for some. Of course, those at the pointy end of the pyramid managed to do quite, well out of it by asset stripping the rest of us. Covid compounded it, but the big stuff was there earlier.

The other kid claims he was disqualified from the rifle team for bad aim. Yet the school has no record of it. Yet, the shooter was wearing a shirt from a popular gun-tuber. In most schools there are nerds who get bullied. The nerds often form their own inner group. They get their own back by getting high marks. Most grow out of this when they leave high school. High school is one of those places that can be really tough since that is where adolescence takes place. Once in Collage or University people are freed from that and start to develop and make new friends and start to form the kind of people they will become. But how does someone who is a math/science whiz/engineer reconcile being a gun enthusiast whose identity seems heavily intertwined with camo clothes, long hair and hand guns/long guns, marksmanship. I wonder what he valued more: his mind for math & numbers or his pistol & long gun marksmanship? My brother- in-law is a mechanical engineer who hangs out with cops and wins awards for his target competitions at the gun range, esp long guns/distance. But his agency is accomplished. He was in the army, his work as an engineer required security clearances. I’m just rambling here. I keep coming back to identity and contempt where Crooks is concerned. Contempt likely came from being misunderstood, bullied, shunned.

The only boys, whom the female, feminist teachers gave good grades to were the boys who were large enough to be on the football and basketball programs in college; 90% females / 10% males on current college campuses in America.
That has always left me out of it, always destroyed by any female teacher, unanimously. I tried to visit a student law office on a campus, and every male was over 7 feet tall, and I was almost assaulted, just walking down a hallway, where a giant was walking towards me and swerved into my path. He looked at me like, "what COULD you do?"
This barbaric bottleneck effect has gone on in societies before, like Scandinavia, where everyone is now 8 feet tall. We are witnessing the short lines die off, every woman wants a man over 6'2", so there won't even be short women anymore. The prettiest women I see at the store are all over 6'4".
In the meantime, we are going to see short men act out in misery, until there are no more left in society.

Occasionally, I observe school-age students who do not feel they are recognized by their peers as superior at some skill or subject. These students are usually very smart, but their self-assessment of superiority is rarely accurate. They often arrogantly argue with their peers for not acknowledging their superiority. When a peer performs better, the arrogant student accuses them of cheating. Their peers get tired of their attitude, and it usually leads to rude comments on both sides. Eventually, the peers try to avoid the student. They are exhausting to be around. The arrogant students do not understand how their behaviors are a problem, and they claim they are bullied. Many adults try to help them, but they feel the adults aren't listening or support their bullies. I can see how these students become more frustrated as they grow up.

Love your work but I'm not buying it. The whole thing seems staged to me. I'll chime in on this to support your analysis / investigation, not discredit it as what I'm saying may seem offensive or disrespectful.
Sounds to me like Crooks was still finding his way in life and struggling socially hence the nursing home job . Only speculation here but maybe the job was advice from the parents (counsellors weren't they? ) to build social skills? Additionally, there aren't many entry level jobs for Engineering students as it is a narrow field. Like someone said in the comments below, we've all had crap jobs at a young age. Overall, it seems to me his behaviour was normal for a 20yr old, not a killer with no options left in life.
Basically, I think he was trying to be useful and 'fit in' to society like all young men but had trouble being respected. Remember life is a popularity contest after all. Imagine being competant in Engineering and nobody giving a crap? That surely would have a negative effect on pyschology. Yes, agree on the social death concept, but shooting the potential president?? I don't think so.
Being smart at a young age these days is hard. Particurlaly if you are a "know it all" with glasses, the nerdy look and haven't made it yet. i.e made big money. Personally, I've been called the "know it all" a many times (42 yrs old) and it cuts deep because you're simply doing what you're good at, trying give value to society and often the average person can take it the wrong way. i.e they take offence when you're simply trying to help them. Very frustrating.
We also have to rememeber there's been a technological shift in the last 20 years, with information being available for free almost instantly to the average person with a mobile phone. One can now 'Google it' instead of engaging you, effectively 'cheapening' your brain, which I'll admit can make you feel worthless at times. For example, Imagine calling Macgyver a "know it all" back in the 80's.
Anyway, that's my take on it.

The guidance counselor who claimed Crooks was not bullied was not credible, because kids who bully rarely do it with adults present, and the kids rarely report these incidents. Some bullies like an audience of students, but some bullies don't. Plus, some bully in mostly one place, like the school bus, in front of hall lockers in the morning, or the gym locker room or gym class. Of course it can take place in the cafeteria, the halls or anywhere in a school. So, no one student sees all the bullying of a person like Crooks, unless they are following him around everywhere.
Vincent Toarmina tells one good story, about Crooks confronting him on being Hispanic but liking Trump, and then he was specific how Crooks hated Bernie Sanders. However, he says Crooks spoke a lot about politics but he fails to say what was said specifically, especially the most important, what did Crooks say about Trump. He may not remember exactly what was said because like most high school students, he's not that interested in politics and not following everything Trump says closely. Instead, he's just going with a general feeling, something which is probably heavily influenced by his parents.
Even so, don't get me wrong, I think Toarmina said something revealing few other witnesses have hinted at, that Crooks didn't like any political figures, which isn't exactly psychotic, because there are a lot of people who don't like the any of the choices we have as voters. So, it's possible Crooks registered as a Republican just for the guns.

Yes, I definitely think we are becoming a meaner, more selfish, less caring society from the one I grew up in and I was bullied at a couple of schools I went to even in kinder days. Social death is devastating to live through and I firmly believe Thomas is just the kind of kid who would have died a social death long before his sad, short life ended physically. Schools never own up to the vile bullying that goes on right in front of their eyes and sensitive young people are always a target of bullying in my experience. I've seen it so many times. Unfortunately, I believe the horse has bolted in terms of trying to reign in this abhorrent behaviour which is rife now. You only have to look at RUclips comments, chat rooms and no doubt social media for example after example of this sort of thing. It often seems like the nastier and more cutting your comments are, the more popular and higher up in the pecking order you become. It makes me very sad for the gentle souls out there and who are yet to come. Thanks for your insightful perceptions.

  • @DonBueller
    @DonBueller 3 месяца назад +7

The kid was a narcissistic psychopath, I'm saying that from a clinical perspective, not a name calling perspective.
Lack of ability to interpret social clues (low empathy is connected with inability to connect socially and hence read social cues, leading to not fitting in) ... low or no emotional empathy for others ... slightly higher than normal cognitive function allowing him to believe he was better than or superior to others (grandiosity). Victim world-view, lack of accountability, predisposition to criminal or destructive behavior fueled by his victim fantasy ("they deserve it" is what his narcissism tells him.)
The wound was likely before the age of 9, likely an insidious pattern occurring over time, not necessarily dramatic and acute.
This kid was turned 'evil' long before middle school and high school.
He was once a victim of abuse, as a younger child, the organism responded to the trauma by forming the clinical narcissism, a common self defense mechanism, and he was likely predisposed genetically to a psychopathic/sociopathic flavor.
Do not blame his school friends. By then intervention by anyone other than a really really insightful psychologist was useless.
Narcissism is like concrete that cures, it cannot be un-cured into a peanutbuttery consistency, or a baked cookie that can not be unbaked back into malleable batter.
Do not blame society, do not blame his schoolmates.
What happened to him - the early abuse, and the organism' s adaptive and rigid response to that trauma, happened long before. Rejection by schoolmates and bullying, if IN FACT it happened, and it wasn't just a one way street of smug arrogance from the kid towards others, would be a natural immune system reaction by the normal mostly-healthy social system around him, that is, the group picked up that something was dark in this one, and that darkness was evidenced by the smug superiority and the disconnectedness emanating FROM the kid to the group. The social system therefore was more keeping its distance like one would from a rabid raccoon, as opposed to explicitly 'othering' that rabid raccoon.
It's just more complex than a refrigerator magnet bromide about being kind to others. Yes be kind to other, yes, try to understand that people are not inherently evil, but DO avoid copperheads, rattlesnakes and rabid raccoons in the wild, in your family, and in school.
And for his schoolmates and 'society in general'? THIS IS NOT YOUR FAULT. This process was at work with the cavemen, and in this case the cake was baked LONG before you ever met him.
If there is something to blame here, look towards parenting, well intentioned or otherwise ... and if you want to look for the root of THAT problem, well you have to go back to the original 'missing of the mark' in the Bible, or the dust-in-their-eyes spoken of in early Buddhism.
