- MARCH IS MOTHRA MADNESS MONTH!! Let's kick this month off with the original 1961 classic, Mothra.
Special Thanks to Hewy Toonmore for noticing a huge error on my part regarding the composer.
Mothra, is kinda unique amongst Toho's monsters, in that she's the only Kaiju I'd want to hug. She's just so fuzzy looking
+weldonwin lol
+Kaiju no Kami how's that funny?
Because he wants to hug her for fuzziness.
Always loved this movie, and I can remember three distinct times that I saw it. The first was in July of 1981 when it aired on the "4:30 Movie" on ABC during "Monster Week". I was almost five years old, and I think this was the first time I saw it. I didn't see it again until it aired on "Super Scary Saturday" on TBS in December, 1987. I was *deathly* ill with pneumonia, and I just remember lying on the couch in the living room watching it. Then in October, 1988 I bought the VHS. It never gets old :)
I rented it from Video Factory back in like 89. I always found it odd how nobody ever seemed to air it on TV.
As usual, this is the first time I've ever seen this film. I just finished watching it and oh my God, did I love this movie. It was beautiful beginning to end, the story moved along briskly, you couldn't help but feel for all the characters, the epic vibe of the movie was wonderful and the soundtrack was very good. On top of that Frankie Sankai as Senchiro is now my single favorite human character in any giant monster film ever. He was terrific. If only all Kaiju movies could be this good. Wow.
Agreed on pretty much everything.
Actually according to the square cube law, mothra is millions of times bigger than a moth. Assuming the average moth probably has a body length of 2 inches, this mothra has a body length of 80 meters. When we calculate mothras height, width, and length, she is 7.5 million times bigger than an average moth.
Therefore, it would take up to 300,000 years for mothra to transform into her imago form.
This is really good news.
This movie's without a doubt one of the best kaiju movies ever made considering that it was the first appearance of Mothra! Add to the fact that this movie's got memorable scenes (i.e. Mothra hatching out of her egg and the scene where she comes out of her cocoon) makes this movie even more iconic and unforgettable! No mothra movie can top this one! Not even Mothra vs Godzilla or even the Rebirth of Mothra movies!
I can't stand the Rebirth movies.
The tiny twins in the movie were played by real life twin sisters Emi Ito and Yumi Ito. Who together formed the very popular singing duo The Peanuts. That catchy Mothra song was recorded by them .. Mossee RAA !
Yep.
7:21 NOBODY SAID THERE'D BE MATH!!!!!!!!!!
Hay kaiju no kami what's your top favorite mothra design forms?
The original 61 followed by the Tokyo SOS one.
Ok mines is all of them but if i choose my top 5 it will be 1961,mothra Leo, aqua mothra, armored mothra, and tokyo sos.
+Kaiju no Kami My favorite Mothra design is TokyoMosu from "Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.", my favorite Godzilla movie!
@@dazumahrtv6181
My favorite movie as well=)
Godzilla 2003 is my favorite Kaiju from that film^^
It's very hard for me to try to choose between this and Rodan on what my second favorite Toho kaiju movie that only focuses on one monster in a major role after Gojira is, but as of right now I think I may have to give it here to Mothra. It might even be objectively the better movie of the two as well. Again, it is really hard for me to say that though because I do really love Rodan as well.
Agreed, but I also agree on Mothra being the better movie.
Agreed. Rodan and Mothra are both very good movies and it’s hard to choose between the two. I like Rodan better as a Kaiju though.
Soooooo good! Loves it. Such a cool film, and it's still kind of astonishing what a unique film it really is, even if it hadn't launched Mothra as an icon, it's just damn good fun. Some smart evolution as well for Honda's film style/philosophy. I'm sorry, you're now in the opposite death spiral, opposite of the Gamera series. There is no light at the end of this tunnel...just Aqua Mothra...
+The Kaijuologist Yeah, I watched Rebirth today so I can start working on the review. Spoiler warning: Expect me to be banging my head against a wall in one of the next reviews I do. :-D
During my time in 6th grade, our science class brought a bunch of Silkworm eggs and during each visit, we got to see them grow into caterpillars, and during our final 2 weeks of school we saw them forming there Silk Cocoons, and I even got 2 of them into a cup and put them in a butterfly cage.
And after a week the first one came out and I named her Lora and a few days later the second one came out and he was a male that I named him Leo.
They even matted at one point and had a lot of eggs though sadly none of them survived.
Still, Mothra is a cool movie especially due to how great the characters are written and I even like seeing a city outside of Japan like New York.
It's honestly surprising that most Kaiju movies aren't like this.
I never did that in school, but I have done it here in CO as a teacher. It's an interesting experience. Though, we are required to let them go, not let students keep them.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork That's cool to know.
I LOVE THIS MUSIC WHEN HE STARTED
Which, my Mothra Month opening?
What's your favorite mothra design? Mine's the showa design considering that one came first but the others look good too.
64.
Noticed this is currently your most popular review, so I went in and gave it a watch. Sounds like a good movie overall, and I know Mill Creek has a Bluray of it, but I'm unsure if that's a good release with subs/features and whatnot. Thinking about getting that release. Was that what the review was sourced from, or was it a DVD?
The Mothra BD is fantastic, but yes, this review is taken from the DVD as it wa a couple of years ago.
Watching this vid, I haven't felt this geeky since I went to a Star Trek convention in 1976.
lol I hope you enjoyed the review.
This is the one I haven't seen. I've never really seen the DVD anywhere so I've just not seen it.
Mill Creek did release it on BD last year, so that should be easier to find.
Thanks for this review Kaiju no Kami! The original Mothra is indeed a classic and was one of her two best appearances (the other being Mothra vs Godzilla). I wish the Heisei Mothra vs Godzilla and the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy were even half as good as those movies. They had some nice ideas but rather lackluster execution.
Something I want to ask you though since you're going to be reviewing Rebirth of Mothra next is which name do you think is better: DesGhidorah or Death Ghidorah?
I think Death Ghidorah is a better name since "Des" is an approximation of an English word that the Japanese character system was incapable of incorporating with greater accuracy. "Death Ghidorah" does reflect the filmmakers' intent, and it is not an exercise in pointless tracing back an etymology.
The name's meaning is somewhat lost in translation and could also be confusing to those who don't realize that "Des" was an approximation for death. This happened to me when I was younger since every other Ghidorah variation had some other name that made sense (Mecha-King, Cretaceous, Grand King, and Keizer (the Dutch variation)), and I kept wondering what "Des" meant. When I finally found out, I face-palmed in frustration and wondered why Toho didn't just stick with the Death Ghidorah name.
+Dragon Tiger Sword I'm probably going to be bringing that up in my review, but Death Ghidorah all that way.
Are you going to buy the mothra blu ray steel book on July 9th?
I hope so.
For more on Mothra, be sure to buy my book "Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters"! Cheers!
:-) It's a great book.
I like the look of Mothra in this movie as in sum of the others she wanders into plush toy looks. Everyone does a great job and I think the bad guys death is the classic movie gangster death. You can see why this became the hit it was and when a version of the theme played during Godzilla -King of the monsters I had a huge grin on my face.
You might want to check your maths I think you've got your decimal place in the wrong place.:)
lol
Who caused the most destruction Godzilla in the 54 film , mothra , or rodan in there solo films
Godzilla.
7:36 that's some good humor and commentary!
8:25 your reaction when they do something stupid.
8:37 that's also hilarious when you throw the calculator and say "or not".
10:32 also hilarious.
lol Glad you enjoyed it. :-) I probably should rewatch some of my older reviews but I'm so busy working on new ones that I just don't always have the time.
I've heard Mothra's were the inspiration for the eyes for the 1st kamen rider
It's always possible.
I don’t get how when flying Kaiju go past buildings, the buildings get destroyed afterwards. How does that work?
Wind speed.
Then flying Kaiju are faster than they look...
Yes.
Hey kaiju no kami what's your favorite mothra moment?
+David Brown Hmmmmm, there are so many, but probably when Mothra started to drag Godzilla away by his tail in the 64 movie.
+Kaiju no Kami nice an awesome moment and iconic
+Kaiju no Kami I like that moment too
David Brown my favorite moments are when Mothra hatches, and when she cocoons herself. also when she emerges from the cocoon in her adult form.
That is a pretty cool scene. The miniature work for New Kirk is awesome so damn good that I love that entire sequence.
What do you think is better godZilla 1954 or mothra 1961
Godzilla.
Would do you like better mothra 1961 or mothra vs Godzilla
Probably Mothra vs Godzilla. I love Mothra, but MvsG is an improvement.
Um, hey guys. This might be a little weird to say/ask. But I have to tell you something. I don't know if anyone else knows about this. But Mothra(1961 variety) is actually based on a book. The book being called The Luminous Fairies and Mothra. I'm looking to be a writer, and I also collect books. I really want to add Mothra to my collection. Even if it's all in japanese, I still want to have it. Anyone know of a store or a link to buy it? Also it amazes me that Mothra(to my knowledge )is the only Kaiju from the toho films to be a literary character.
I don't know, sadly. I think someone brought it up before in the comments last year.
Did they say anything about where one could find it?
I don't believe so.
Alrighty. I'll keep looking. Someone is bound to be selling them somewhere.
Nevermind. I just copied the japanese lettering of the book's title, searched on amazon, and i found it. now I just gotta wait for payday to get it.
hahahaha OMG I laughed my butt of and I love mothra 😊
So do I. :-D
I’m not a huge fan of Mothra the kaiju but this movie is very very good. One of the best Toho movies in my opinion.
It's so good.
Rocky's Gonna Fly Theme For Mothra
I lost it at the Cadbury commercial. XD
:-D
7:07 oh no she destroyed the damn dam!
awesome what theme
I have some issues with the Mothra puppet in this movie: the head looks kinda weird, the legs are too small and look like pipes, and Mothra's thorax looks kinda too big.
Given she's a giant made up monster, I don't see how those are wrong.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork The wings look good thou.
Mothra Is So Cute
😛
モスラ 綺麗で神秘で地球の守り神モスラ
Mothra Armor
Pretty much.
I was wondering when you'd get to this movie. I agree. Mothra (61) is one of the BEST made kaiju films ever. Yuji Koseki's score worked perfectly in this movie, and I am glad they went with him instead of Akira Ifukube.
Akira Ifukube is great composer who knows how to make a rousing march or a dreadful monster's attack. But Mothra was probably not suitable for his style. Part fairy tale, part Epic (the genre where big budgets, big sets, and big casts are the norm), and monster movie.
This movie did really well in Japan and in the USA when it was released here by Columbia Pictures.
Beautiful movie indeed. It was on Turner Classic Movies a few months ago, with such a nice pristine print.
+MiniraShine lol You would have had a heart attack with my original cut of this review as I completely spaced on Ifukube not doing the score and credited him for it. Thankfully, the user Hewylewis above noticed this within the first 20 minutes of this review being up so I was able to take it down and correct it before too many people saw it. :-)
Ohh! I see. Btw, If you liked Frankie Sakai (Sen-chan/Bulldog) here, you might like him in another Toho film from that same year, The Last War. Cold War Drama movie, with lots of wonderful sfx from Eiji Tsuburaya.
+MiniraShine Interesting. Has it ever been released in the states on DVD legally and subbed?
No, never. There's a public domain dub out there? And probably the American dub. But its cropped and it cuts out a good 40 minutes of the movie. You can find a trailer for it on RUclips for sure, which uses the International Dub. Don't think I've ever seen a Japanese trailer for it. "YOU MUST SEE: THE LAST WAR" as the trailer says.
+MiniraShine I know which movie you are talking about now. Yeah, that and Half Human are on my "Wish someone would release this in the US" list. Actually, I don't even think Toho has released them on DVD in Japan either.
Homer Simpson: Trying is The First Step Towards Failure
Yep. Love that line.
Is Mothra your second favorite kaiju next to Godzilla?
For good guys, yes.
Yeah, but keep in mind not everyone is a fan of her though.
Um... okay, what does that have to do with anything? You asked if she was my second favorite, not what I thought about other people thinking about her.
Not everybody likes everybody!
One last thing, I think Onodera from Gamera vs Barugon is a bigger more despicable asshole than Nelson. But I think Nelson is much more fun to watch.
I agree that his death was anticlimatic (he was supposed to be killed by Mothra in a direct confrontation, but Columbia poured more money and asked for a bigger bang of an ending), but I think it suits him.
He goes down like a chump.
+MiniraShine Hahaha, bang, I get it. :-D
+Kaiju no Kami Oh yeah, Onodera doesn't beat up children.
where did you get your copy of "MOTHRA"?
Best Buy back when the Toho Classics Collection came out (it has Mothra, Battle for Outer Space, and H-Man).
The one distributed by Sony Pictures? With both the Japanese and English languages?
Yep.
Well, did you know that in one scene of the Japanese version of MOSURA (MOTHRA) had a scene where the girls were singing again? Because in the American print shortened that scene. And why did Columbia depict the larva as green? that is just weird!
Hey Kaiju No Kami, who are your favorite kaiju from Toho's gallery ?
The Godzilla vs Kong leak looked amazing I’m on team Godzilla
You mean the poor image on the airship carrier?
Kaiju no Kami yeah but are you excited for it
I don't know. The director hasn't made a good movie before, so I'm worried. ON the other hand, I'm hoping the delay will do it good.
Kaiju no Kami maybe it was for the best of the film even if I did still love 2014 and KOTM
woooooooooooooow with the Barbie girl!😏
:-)
But i love godzilla movies this one i like godzilla movie (GODZILLA 2000) (1999)
Is 2000 your favorite?
It's Toonmore, not Lewis.
+Hewylewis ?
Kaiju no Kami My reviewer name is Hewy Toonmore. Check out my show.
+Kaiju no Kami actually about Nelson's death it was supposed to be a whole lot different than the one we got in the finished film originally Nelson was to be killed by Mothra herself
+Matkaizer08 that would have been much more satisfying
This is the best mothra design not my favorite that would be 2003/2004
Both are great. Same goes for the 64 design.
Kaiju no Kami I kinda want a team up between king Caesar and mothra
I just want a movie dealing with KIng Caesar in general.
Katsumi Tesuka was excellent as Mothra. and Koizumi is excellent as shinchi chujo.
sorry, shinichi is what I meant.
Definitely.
The Pokemon volcarno is based off of Kaiju Mothra
Cool, I did not know that.
Why does it feel like King Kong
I thought the country was supposed to represent both America and Russia
+Pete X I believe you are right.
How is she unique she is just a giant bug
That's what made her unique compared to giant lizards you would see in giant monster movies of the time.
I was quite disappointed by that film everyone liked it but I didn't
What did you not like about it?
A skit from MadTV kind of ruined Mothra for me...
How so?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Random mention and cameo in Deer Zapper.
Um that song is not right
Which song?
Ahem the mothra song XD
Yeah, but what do you mean by it isn't right?
