I do love Kiryu, with the exception of shoulder and wrist armaments. They contrast too much with the design in this movie. Tokyo SOS thankfully fixed that. Great overall review. This is one of the best entries of the series.
This movie is without a doubt my favorite in the Millinal series as well as being my 2nd favorite Godzilla movie for all of the exact reasons you just stated. The main cast is great along with other characters, the effects, miniatures, music, and the final battle is just spectacular. And i really like the look on Godzilla and Mechagodzilla. There's hardly anything that I have against this film and I'm just glad this film has continuity.

The monsters seem rather badass in this movie. Godzilla looks badass but his design is not my favorite. He looks kinda wolfy and very jock-like. Kiryu is also pretty badass but it still feels a bit human like. Overall, what i really like about this movie is that it is actually taking itself more seriously and is more like a professionally good action movie rather than a cheesy b-movie.
What I love about this film is that Mechagodzilla isn't treated like the villian like the heisei godzilla vs Mechagodzilla that and no Miki I like her and all but she can be a Lisa Simpson at times especially during godzilla vs space Godzilla try defending Godzilla when dealing with the families of his victims
Fun fact: Titanosaurus and Angurius were both gonna be in this movie Titano role was to team up with kiryu as the hero for the first time while Angurius was gonna fight kiryu.
I heard that Toho is planning to make the new Godzilla series after 2020 as a form of a reboot of the franchise and new shared universe between kaiju movies. If that ever comes true, I would love it if they bring back Masaaki Tezuka as a director, Michiru Oshima as a composer, older actors such as Kenji Sahara, Kumi Mizuno, Akira Nakao, Akira Takarada, etc. The few more things that would make the new series great is adding some new kaijus that have never been made (such as Gigamoth, Ghost Godzilla, etc.), bringing back Shinji Nishikawa for drawing concept art, bringing back suitmation and miniature sets, taking film making inspirations from older movies and helding contests for fans to write the movie scripts. That would be so awesome!
GAMG & T.SOS are two of my all time favorite G-movies! Fun stories, strong characters, lots of shout-outs/easter eggs, cool FX, great music, epic battles...what's not to love?
That's tough as he's got so many great pieces spread throughout the films. Some of my favorites include the redone Mekanikong theme from Heisei MechaGodzilla, the version of the Godzilla March that is at the beginning of Destoroyah, and of course, the Ghidorah theme music.
Kaiju no Kami my favorite is the destroy all monster theme is love a lot of his others scores. My second favorite is the invasion of the Astro monster the but all of his scores are all so memorable.

If Luffy lands a punch to Godzilla, Godzilla wouldn’t even flinch. Also yeah Evangelion was the inspiration for this films plot. And as for Godzilla just standing there taking the hit and not flinching? You do realize missiles and military weapons have no effect on him. I mean that’s common knowledge of Godzilla. Sure it looks weird but I guess it was to show they have no effect on him.
It's not him standing there that annoys me, it is how lifeless he looks when doing so. It's just not a great shot in what is a near perfect Godzilla film.
Look I completely agree and I think this is hands down the best MechaGodzilla and the best of the millennium stories. I always wondered if the scene with Godzilla just standing there and taking the hits was a case of we're about to set a lot of pyrotechnics off on the suit and it might be too dangerous to have the suit actor inside just in case.

This was an okay movie but at the same time it should've had more screentime for the monsters but oh well. Add to the fact that they call Mechagodzilla Kiryu instead of Mechagodzilla makes this one somewhat polarizing but that's just me.
See, that I can't agree with. The movie is only 80 something minutes long, so the fights were no different than they were in the Showa era. It was very fast paced and yet still had time to develop the characters. As for the name, Kiryu was the project name.

She might be a copy and paste character, but unlike Tsujimori from Megaguirus, she's actually likable and grows up. Tsujimori was a soulless bitch from start to finish.
Now, this may be because I grew up with it, and the nostalgia factor is high, but I disagree about this being the best Mechagodzilla. In my mind, the 1974/1975 incarnation is favourite. I like the alien invasion plots (I know it was done a lot, but hey, I'm a sap for it), and I like especially the idea of McG being cyborg-linked to Katsura. That was kinda cool. Although, I saw the edited version and didn't realise she died. I thought McG "died" when Katsura's human side took over her robot side. I like that explanation better
I never knew for years either that Katsura had died until I got the Region 2 DVD of Terror and then I was all, "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that makes more sense now."

This is one of my preferred Godzilla films; one that I often go back to. Going off your other reviews (I waited to see this review), I figured you'd dig Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla, and it was pleasing how it was handled. I really like kiryus design it's a nice blend of the slick metallic look of the 1993 mechagodzilla and the angry face of the 70s mechagodzilla plus the drill hand in Tokyo sos reminds me of Moguera kiryus design all around is great I really like how kiryu has teeth not sure about the blue battle pack though the silver Tokyo sos battle pack looks a lot better on him
This film really was great, Kiryu was so much better than the last Mechagodzilla and can now understand why you ranked it so high in the top ten video.

I always loved Godzilla in this and I thought that kiryu was Godzilla father and that's the reason he Godzilla stood there in his encounter with kiryu he was shocked and also explains why he just shows up after kiryu is built he senses his father but then again this could just be me
I think the obvious reason Godzilla stood there tanking the hits from those missiles is because he's dealt with explosives before, they don't effect him in the slightest and he knows it, so why bother moving?
It's a Godzilla movie, so of course the dialog is atrocious. Though, that could also be the terrible translations. The melodramatics though are awesome.
I just watched it and so am freshly annoyed by the dialogue...It has a nice scene where the old guy with the daughter is hitting on Akane, and the 'you killed my bruddah' guy pushes the old guy and Akane whips his ass with an arm bar. I guess it woulda messed up the tone for her to sacrifice the 'bruddah' guy clogging up the big fella's mouth, plus it would be hard to justify Godzilla's escape if Akane iced them both..it's actually one of my fav Godzilla movies...saw it at least twice. there are actually many effective human scenes in it. I guess if you put the human scenes on a scale, there's more effective scenes than the ones I found annoying
Kiryu just got "hacked by Godzilla" virus and goes berserk. Apart from his lifeless look, I love the design of Kiryugoji. Comparing to the others in the entire franchise, he seems to be the most slender incarnation. I'd love to see this design combine with the one in G2000. BTW, why didn't Godzilla finish Kiryu up at the end when he's running out of power, he had a perfect chance. Even with the horribly wounded chest, I don't think it'll affect him that much.
Well we don't really know how battered Godzilla was at the end of the movie. He also might not have known how damaged Kiryu really was. We'll just have to leave it up to his instincts telling him to flee. I do agree with the design. I want Bandai to get over the Heisei repaints and make a MonsterArts version already of this one.
As I've seen, for the millenium series, most people love the Final Wars and GMK design. Seems like people prefer that are closest to the Heisei as much as possible.

Agreed. The only thing I will say Tokyo SOS was superior on was not having Godzilla just stand there like a lifeless toy when he got shot.

I always loved Godzilla in this and I thought that kiryu was Godzilla father and that's the reason he Godzilla stood there in his encounter with kiryu he was shocked and also explains why he just shows up after kiryu is built he senses his father but then again this could just be me
I can understand the being shocked part, it's more of just how lifeless he looks.

I think the obvious reason Godzilla stood there tanking the hits from those missiles is because he's dealt with explosives before, they don't effect him in the slightest and he knows it, so why bother moving?
Except this is a brand new Godzilla, so he really hasn't dealt with many explosions.

Godzilla design good, Mecha excellent, Akane excellent, dialogue atrocious, fight scenes good, redemption plot tired, heavy-handed melodramatics annoying...overall, Mecha and Akane only reason to watch...both are awesome
It's a Godzilla movie, so of course the dialog is atrocious. Though, that could also be the terrible translations. The melodramatics though are awesome.
I just watched it and so am freshly annoyed by the dialogue...It has a nice scene where the old guy with the daughter is hitting on Akane, and the 'you killed my bruddah' guy pushes the old guy and Akane whips his ass with an arm bar. I guess it woulda messed up the tone for her to sacrifice the 'bruddah' guy clogging up the big fella's mouth, plus it would be hard to justify Godzilla's escape if Akane iced them both..it's actually one of my fav Godzilla movies...saw it at least twice. there are actually many effective human scenes in it. I guess if you put the human scenes on a scale, there's more effective scenes than the ones I found annoying
Kiryu just got "hacked by Godzilla" virus and goes berserk.
Apart from his lifeless look, I love the design of Kiryugoji. Comparing to the others in the entire franchise, he seems to be the most slender incarnation. I'd love to see this design combine with the one in G2000.
BTW, why didn't Godzilla finish Kiryu up at the end when he's running out of power, he had a perfect chance. Even with the horribly wounded chest, I don't think it'll affect him that much.
Well we don't really know how battered Godzilla was at the end of the movie. He also might not have known how damaged Kiryu really was. We'll just have to leave it up to his instincts telling him to flee. I do agree with the design. I want Bandai to get over the Heisei repaints and make a MonsterArts version already of this one.
As I've seen, for the millenium series, most people love the Final Wars and GMK design. Seems like people prefer that are closest to the Heisei as much as possible.
I can understand loving the evil Godzilla design of GMK, as I love it too. Not so much for the Final Wars one though.
I don't know how to explain about the Finalgoji design, but I would say that I'm not OK with it. Let's say, a little bit unusual.
