    This movie was my childhood. The cinematography for the night scenes were so damn beautiful with the red skies. Though I do wish the kept the original score from the scene where Orga was absorbing Godzilla. None the less, without a doubt one of my personal favorite films.

      I'm cool with it either way as both have their positives and negatives, but I do think Sony's cut is the stronger version from a narrative sense. I just wish I could watch their version with the Japanese audio track.

    my favorite film of the mill series.
    Seeing it in the theater in 2000 was the best. Also with the internet getting more involved I would spend so much time looking up stuff and finding out there were Godzilla movies I never seen or even heard of.
    And you were pretty spot on with the review too. Characters were mostly enjoyable, special effects were hit and miss, the suits being unique, the fights, etc. Probably my favorite Godzilla design over all.

      Getting to see this movie in the theater was awesome. It was the first real Godzilla movie I ever saw in theaters, and would be the only one until I got to see the original on the big screen last year. I've yet to see any of the other 26 movies in the franchise on the big screen. Well, unless you count the 2014 movie.
      Like you, I was amazed when I learned about Megaguirus and GMK. As such, I immediately bought VCDs of the two movies and then the Region 3 DVD of GMK, followed by getting the Region 2 of a ton of the movies that were out in Japan at the time.
      I've actually seen the Japanese version to 2000 far more than I have the English version since I own the Region 2 DVD, but I still have to give the edge to Sony on this one. I can watch either version, but I find myself getting more enjoyment out of Sony's cut despite not liking some of the voices or changed dialog.
      The Godzilla design is a favorite of mine, but I don't think it was perfect until the Kiryu movies. But that is for another review. :-)

      As much as I want to, I just can't go through with buying imported movies (still under another format unless it's youtube now these days) no matter how much I want to see it. As well as finding a vcr or dvd player that is the according region to play the thing. Only time I bought something over seas was Fatal Frame 4 for the Wii because my little brother is such a die hard fan of that series and he knew his way around programing the thing to play imports.
      But yeah, seeing the movie. It was good even if the people around you are confused wondering if the movie was really a sequel to the 98 film. I didn't care, just sat there and picked up on everything while eating probably 2 large tubs of popcorn and a large soda.

      I hated the ones with Kiryu. Now I love Kiryu but Godzilla in those movies was weaker than all his incarnations. They were going for a realistic approach. That's stupid. Godzilla is not supposed to be realistic. It ruins his character. Tanaka is spinning in his grave. Godzilla 2000 how ever kept it right. The Japanese version is longer and makes more sense. Who cares about the sound effects there decent in the Japanese version. I like Godzilla's roar it makes him sound bigger and more threatening.

    You know this is one of my favorite Godzilla movies for the reasons that it sheds some light on how Godzilla's soo tough and also I think orga is awesome.

      Being able to regenerate within seconds is insane. But you do realize the Heisei era established Godzilla can regenerate in seconds. In fact Godzilla vs Biollante proves this. Though most of Heisei Godzilla’s regeneration facts were given through Toho’s supplimental materials. Like sources books and such.

    When I was a child, I did like this movie; one of my main favorites in my childhood. I mainly like the movie because of the Godzilla suit, that was my all time favorite Godzilla suit as a child. But today, my opinions have changed over the years, but that suit holds a special place in my heart. Also while I think of your review, how would that Godzilla look if it was the Grey skin and white dorsal spines?

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  8 лет назад

    • @deadaccount6554
      @deadaccount6554 8 лет назад

      Kaiju no Kami Well if you do compare the face designs of the two suits, you can see a major difference between the two, mainly with the detail of teeth. The teeth of the suit from this movie looks more crooked and the teeth of the suit from the Kiryu films are more straightened out.

      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  8 лет назад +1

      Kaiju no Kami Good point. Just looking at and think about the suit from this movie, I still dig it like I used to. Also I want to point out what I think I really loved about the suit when I was a child. I think I loved it back in my youth because the head design had scary looking teeth in it's jaws, and it had a ferocious expression, and the body design is pretty cool for my taste, and I love the detail of those dorsal spines, concluding the fact that the suit is just so badass for my taste.

    "Regenerator G-1" definitely sounds like a better name. But from what I heard, the main reason it was called "Organizer G-1" because the villain Kaiju was going to be named Orga. Also, the OST in the English version is FAR better than the Japanese version (the Japanese filmmakers and reviewers have even said so themselves!). I mean, just LISTEN to that theme song that plays when Orga first appears after Godzilla destroys his UFO. That track is fucking EPIC!!!!!!

  • @thekaijuologist5642
    @thekaijuologist5642 9 лет назад +3

    Super sweet. I forgot that awesome Ivan Ooze transformation. I feel like the japanese composer had such a different interpretation. I'll admit I do kind of like the subtly he uses, it adds a slightly creepy uneasy feel. But I too much prefer the energized and classic feel the U.S. cut settles on. I've always have thought this film is acknowledging how much potential there was with Biollante. A monster with G-cells who wildly oversizes Goji and actually tries to swallow him? Yes sir. I really liked how many comparison shots you showed us. I've only been able to track down a few of them on youtube, and it was too much work to cue them back to back lol. I spend a good chunk in my review ranting about how weird it is that it took 40 some years for the U.S. to produce a superior edit. I think we it to Toho after Zill '98.

      Yeah, I like doing comparison shots, but I can't do too much or Toho might come after me. :-)
      I don't know what Hattori was thinking. I might have given him a little more slack had I not found his SpaceG score so unbefitting of a Godzilla movie. I do like his theme, but it is the weakest theme of the Millennium era and was over used in the Japanese version.

    I saw this in the theater back in 2000.That said this movie could've been better considering that it was rather generic and slow-paced but despite that not a bad start to the milliennum series. Add to the fact that it's got one of my favorite Godzilla designs in it makes it not half-bad.

    Without a doubt the most iconic movie in the millennium series considering that it was released in america in 2000. Add to the fact that it's the first Godzilla movie to use the iconic 2000 design makes this movie even more iconic and unforgettable. That being said the movie could've been better considering that it was rather generic and slow-paced for a Godzilla movie. I mean there were some scenes in the movie that weren't needed in my opinion and while Godzilla's design looks very cool Orga on the other hand looks generic and lackluster but that's just me.

    Godzilla 2000 is a hard one for me to say.
    I do like the spines on Godzilla and that he's scaled down so the miniatures look good, but I'm kinda disappointed that there Purple instead of Blue since Blue is my favorite color.
    Then there's Orga who's honestly among my least favorite Godzilla monsters since he barely has that much screen time nor do I really find his design that interesting.
    The alien subplot I didn't think was really that interesting except for Godzilla's cells. and the pacing didn't felt right to be honest.
    But I do like the cast for this movie.
    And it was interesting to hear the differences between the different versions since this is the first time I've heard the 2.
    Honestly, this film was kinda forgettable outside of the characters and it's probably my 2nd least favorite out of the Millennium series. and it is very in the middle if I rank all 33 Godzilla movies that I've watched.

      The one thing that people never realize is that Godzilla can heal within a split second as shown in the film. And when we have debates on Godzilla they find it hard to believe but it's right there in the film. Idk how they missed it you know. Unlike most people I myself always have the sense to pay attention to the details. And always point them out. To me that's important. Sort of a habit really.

    This is it. The film that kickstarted Toho's unhealthy obsession for pressing the reboot button almost consecutively every time a new Godzilla film is made. I yearn for the day the decide go back to the good old days where they would establish a singular continuity that lasts an extended period of time as with the Showa and Heisei. I know we have the Monsterverse and *gawk* the anime trilogy, but those weren't technically done by Toho themselves.
    What is your stance on Toho doing another longstanding continuity as they did in the past? Do you support it? Or did the Heisei series' handling of it leave too much of a bad taste in your mouth?

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  3 года назад

      Given it allowed for experimentation and gave us three of the best films in the franchise, I had no problem with what they were doing. It was nice to see them try something new.
      As for Toho doing a shared universe, I don't really have an opinion. As long as they don't rush it like WB did, then cool.

    • @Guyverman01
      @Guyverman01 3 года назад

      I understand why one would feel that no continuity allows room for more creative freedom. It is tolerable doing it once in a while, but virtually every goddamn time just gets redundant. Sometimes you have to go back to the basics.
      For your information, I have some pretty unpopular opinions regarding the "best films" in the franchise that you mentioned. Would you get angry and judgemental with me if I told you how I exactly I feel about them?

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I was never a fan of GMK and the more time goes by, the more I don't appreciate Shin either. Allow me to explain why.
      As for GMK, I'm in the crowd who would've liked it much better if they'd gone with the original plan featuring Anguirus and Varan. But sadly, Toho hijacked director Kaneko's plans and shoehorned Mothra and Ghidorah for the sake of getting more buts in seats. Part of the reason why Godzilla Vs Biollante (one of my all-time favorites) tanked at Japan's box-office is because Biollante is not a more classic and recognized monster. It's a testament to just how inflexible audiences can be with what kaiju are given.
      Also, a purely and outright evil Godzilla does not resonate with me, plain and simple. In addition, I am not a fan of the whole "lost souls" concept, because I like my Godzilla science-based. Part of my issues just might be that the film came out immediately following a chain of films in which you were meant to root for him (including the later Heisei films), so suddenly making him antagonistic again does not put me at ease. I might have gone easier on the idea had GMK been the first Godzilla film in over a decade.
      Now on to Shin. First of all, admit that it does have good things going for it, especially in the special effects department, and the the original tracks are (mostly) solid themes in their own right. Sadly, like GMK before it, the creative choices with Godzilla really hinder it for me. I appreciate the desire to make a scarier and uglier Godzilla, but the physical design is not without its faults. The two main things that bother me are the ludicrously long tail and the pointed sternum, which makes it looks like a boat is sticking out of his chest.
      Just so you know, I prefer my Godzilla plain and conventional without too weird or outlandish attributes and/or origins as to what he is. This version of Godzilla mostly feels like Hedorah in Godzilla's clothing. I also find the fact he can shoot lasers from everywhere around his body just a little to far fetched. Think of the character like a pizza, where you can have pepperoni, pineapple, and any other topping imaginable, or just plain cheese.
      I am also not keen on the implementation of outdated stock music and sound effects as it comes across as jarring and takes you out of the picture. It's laziness disguised as style. The way GvB implemented stock-Ifukube tracks was near perfect if you asked me. Why? Because they went to what was then-contemporary remixes of classic themes and used them sparingly at appropriate times in the film. If I were in charge of a Godzilla film and wanted classic themes, I'd go to whatever modern-sounding remixes I can come across.
      Then we get to the character of Kayoko, oh god. The character is supposed to be a native-born American, yet she clearly speaks English as if it were a second language. You don't need to get an A-list actor/actress, but would've it bankrupted Toho to simply get one who speaks English as a first language? They were able to get Nick Adams and Russ Tamblyn back in the day, so would it hurt to do something similar in modern times?
      Lastly, we have Godzilla's roar. Like the film's stock music, it sounds outdated and takes you out. Plus, the 60's-70's Showa roar is among the least intimidating of all Godzilla's roars? Why not go the extra mile and create a new scary roar fitting for this version of Godzilla?
      Anyways, that Is my effort into making honest and constructive criticism. I hope I made good points.

      While I really enjoy Shin, I can't blame anyone who has issues with it because it is not like your traditional Kaiju film, it's an Anno film. However, I do think Shin is far superior to the MonsterVerse films.

    They gave up on the idea once they learned it had a 20 million dollar budget but they did consider giving this a sequel at one point in time
    With Bruce fucking Campbell

      They considered putting Bruce Campbell in a Godzilla movie and didn’t follow through

    Personally I like the Japanese version better. I like the sound and music score better, as it has a nice fantasy feel in some scenes. I also like that its simply not an English dub, as the English dub made the film more comical. No wonder it only got a 57% on rotten tomatoes. The English dub made the film "laughable and cheesy" which honestly just feels like the film was disrespected in a way.

      I definitely agree about the lines of the dub. I wish I could watch the US cut of the film with the Japanese voices.

    I feel the cinematography and overall better looking one was the Japanese version and I loved the sound effects better in the Japanese version and I also preferred the Japanese score better but The American version had a better and everything else but they're both equally close in my opinion

      Interesting. You're the only person I know that prefers the Japanese cut. Even I, who prefer the original versions, thinks Sony's cut is better. I just wish I could watch it with the actor's actual voices.

    Roland Emmerich Godzilla's was simply trash and deserves to be thrown into the sea of the lost forever. Til it is forgotten and never brought up again.
    What do you think Kajiu no kami?

      For what it's worth, the movie can be made fun of for how bad it is. I really can't do that with Space Godzilla.

      Yeah, but I guess Toho decided since there was no competition in the 90s they didn't need to put effort into their movies.
