- Learn how to replace your rear brakes. This video will show you how to replace brake pads on rear disc brakes. It takes 30 min to do both disc brakes and is really easy. Brake pads cost $30 and all you need are some wrenches, c-clamps, and a jack to lift the car. ANYONE CAN DO THIS!!!
This procedure will be similar on most dodge and Chrysler cars such as the dodge neon, dodge caliber, Chrysler intrepid, etc.
Here is how to change drum brakes: here: • How to Change Drum Bra...

before HEY GUYS CHRIS FIX HERE was a thing
Ikr
Chris is killing it out there
and seemingly before he had a torque wrench and anti seize.
yesss lol
im just rewatching the old videos and i already miss the "out with the old and in with the new"
Dear Chris, shop quoted me $600 for fronts and rears all around, even thought I don't NEED rotors, they say it voids the pad warranty....apparently, they are nuts, or they think I am. Anyway, this video guided me thru the process, and rear pads are on....the fronts are still thick, and I owe you big time !! THANKS !!
The old vids are still useful to this day keep killing it Chris !
I am literally going from your oldest videos through all of it. I enjoy your videos and look forward to learning all sorts of stuff!
Great! Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I have learned a lot from ChrisFix videos so far. I searched videos replacing brake pads and I had no idea about his old videos until now. Recent his videos looks nice, fancy, maintain focus and voice stably, and equip nice tools but I really like this video even he couldn't take apart the pad at once and even didn't wear gloves. Maybe that's exactly how I look like and, mayby, many people who need help from his video look like. Of course I love his recent videos as well but this old video makes me feel better. Thanks Chris!
That is awesome! I wish they had more diesel options here in the USA. Glad the video is helpful!!!
@flottagraphics I am really happy this has helped you!!! It is nice to know I could help someone change their brakes!!!!
Anyone here knows when he started starting his videos with “hey guys chrisfix here”
Awe, you are so consistent with your methods of teaching and with being sure that you pay attention to detail in doing so! I hope you help many individuals and continue to do the good work that you do. Love what you do.
I came to this video in 2023 just to see where Chris started and am inspired that I can start where I am. I don't have to be perfect.
The key for me, being a novice was to get the simple $5 (priceless to me) brake tool. I did not have this for the first side I tried. Do yourself a favor and get this. Also remember to grease the back side of the where the clip that goes into the piston is. This will make this project much easier. This is the best video out there. Best mechanic and lighting. Watch first install after. I really appreciate the people who made this.
Cool to see old comments
2019 chrisfix would've had this done in 3 minutes with some ENERGY.
Heck yeah
2019 Chris Fix would have nothing to apologize for either. Brake line not "fuel line". Did you catch that? He also got grease on the pads.
videos 12 years old and still coming in clutch!
I'm glad the video is still helpful!
Omg you're such a good boy at teaching. I hope you have many kids and only let them watch educational videos (like yours) without profanity, so they can be enlightened and educate their youngsters in the future.
I'm changing the back brakes on my 2016 Kia Soul tomorrow and couldn't be happier I found this video. I thought I had everything I need, but it looks like I'll have to run out and pick up some grease.
Actually I do brakes all the time... I like how I call it a fuel line by mistake (I think I even correct myself) and you think this is my first time... How did I use the piston compressor wrong?
@Tyfben Awesome!!! Im glad I could help!
Thanks to this guy's videos I learned how to replace my brakes on my own car! Going to save me a ton of money in the long run, plus learned how to do my own oil changes. It's actually pretty easy if you're willing to put in the effort.
just did my pts rear pads thanks for the easy to follow video bro greatly appriciated!
No prob! Glad it was useful!!!
Many thanks. I can't count how many times I've changed brake pads on various cars, including the fronts on this one. Got stuck twice, watched your video both times and confirmed I was doing the 'right thing' and just kept at it and all eventually worked fine. 60 mins for lefts, 20 mins for rights ;-)
No prob! Glad it was a good reference! It is always faster on the second side hahaha (unless something goes wrong)....
...very funny ChrisFix in the past had an assistant but ChrisFix 2021 cannot afford an assistant 🤣😂 Great stuff Chris, you totally made RUclips history and I love your videos! Keep on rocking it! ...and I wont call you, I promise 😁
Thanks man this video is so helpful and quite extraordinary......my uncle taught me how to replace front brake pads but it’s best to watch your videos just to be safe😎
I'm glad you find the video helpful!
Many thanks,. I live in th UK and have a diesel PT and this video has been invaluable !
With this car (pt cruiser) you have to compress the piston a little in order to slide the calipers off... I originally tried to just slide the calipers off like I do on all of my other cars but for some reason the PT Cruiser has to have the piston compressed... No matter what you will have to compress the piston when you put the new pads on though... Give it a shot without initially compressing it and if it doesnt come off, compress it... Let me know what happens!
Typical Chrysler product things. Hahaha
I wish I had seen this back in 2012... Thanks Chris!
yes, high temp grease... most pads come with it in the box
And a good thing to do is make sure that you have clean hands when handling the new pads because you'll get crap all over the new surface.
Or wear gloves and change them out after greasing
Would you have ever thought this is the same guy who has almost 7 million subscribers & 200+ million views ? Very impressive Chris👏🏽
You have come a long way! As smart as u were you are a genius now with all your special tips and tricks..u were even using a scissor jack lol
Hey Chris, Love your videos - learnt how to change disc and brake pads on my Audi a1 through your video's. I am thinking of changing the rear pads and my question is ' Do I need to take the handbrake cable off the calipaer to change or should i leave it on?' Obviously I will disingage the hand brake to keep the brakes loose. Thanks again ChrisFix
Every subscriber needs to watch this :-)))))))😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
came back to watch an old video and see where you started, you've came a long way mate!
Thanks a lot man! Yea, it is amazing looking back haha.
After watching channels like yours I'm going to buy a scrapper and see if i can clean it up, thanks for the inspiration man
Wow, it doesn't feel like a Chris fix video if you don't say HAAAYYY GUUUYS! Or soupy wordor lol. Thanks for the help
You are life saver bro!!!!!you are the best.
Thanks Chris you saved me $$$
Nice early day video. U sure have come a long way!
Mmm okay 16:35 all I can think about is South Park 😂 nothing but love Mr.Fix
Lmao 😂
The old video that made me press the sub button, rewatching old bid
The rear disc brakes are an option... The higher end pt cruisers have them (this is a touring)...
How i can get also 4 Hands?
BENCHSTAR become Alien
Should be the same thing... This will work on most cars because most disc brakes are similar!!!
Going down the street to make a quick $50. If only it wasn't raining out....
Thanks for the walkthrough man.
You help me out a lot .. I save a lot of money
good work bro
You came a long way. Man
Great video Chris. I have a 2001 PT Cruiser and it only has 63000 miles on it. It's in great condition, but when the rear breaks get wet it makes a very loud grinding noise. It only does it when I'm backing out and it only last for a short period of time. It feels as if the rear breaks are activating without me pushing on the break pedal. Any idea what the problem might be?
Great content man😀😀😀😀
Hey Chris, Thanks for all these helpful videos. Keep it up. Apparently my 2008 Citroen C5 has either Teves or Lucas brake system... How would I check which one is my brake system to order right brake pads.?
Good job
You have come a long way since this video
Haha right?! This was one of my firsts.
Thanks for this!
No problem!
Ah, 2012. Vintage ChrisFix
+johnnysymphony lol #throwback
Chris; Please make a video that explains how rear disc brakes with
wind-back pistons work. There is plenty on how to fix them but nothing about how they work. Thanks.
Thanks chris
hey chris, love your videos, you've helped us out a ton with tons of knowledge. can i ask a question? im about to do my back disc brakes (pads only) on 04 chevy malibu v6 and am not sure how to handle the piston. can you tell me why others brake the bleeder valve to compress the piston but you didnt in your PT cruiser rear brake video? its my understanding the bleeder is broken so that the brake fluid isnt pushed back into the master cylinder.... just looking for some advice/knowledge to attach to what im seeing and to do correct procedure. thanks a ton ChrisFix, you RoCK
Useful thanks :)
thanks for the great videos
Tony Gomez No problem! I am glad the videos are helpful! Definitely consider subscribing! New automotive "how to" videos every Thursday and most Mondays!
Dang Chris. I thought you had 3 hands for a second 8:40
Not really... just dont hit the sensor... This PT Cruiser has ABS as well and you never see it in the video because it is behind the caliper... You say "shoes" so do you mean pads or do you have rear drums?
I don't get how clamping the opposite of the piston compresses the piston. How does moving the pad compress the piston on the other side of the rotor? I am not a mechanic. Love the videos.
One other trick you may consider, is to avoid pushing nasty old brake fluid back up into the lines/master cylinder, you can (as you start to compress the piston) release the bleeder valve and let the brake fluid escape the back of the caliper. Make sure you don't release pressure before closing the bleeder valve, as that will introduce air into a closed system (bad)...
It's also a good idea to flush the brake fluid, but that's another vid now isn't it? :-) Good work man! Keep payin it forward!
PS. other vehicle manufacturers rear disks operate MUCH differently, and to compress the cylinder you have to "screw" in as you push. Very tough without the right tools, but it can be done.
That is a good tip thanks! It def is another video. I try to keep simple stuff simple so anyone can learn to change their brakes, but if you are more advanced and want to do it this way, more power to ya!
Chris fix just take the bottom screw out flip caliper up take pads out then put caliper back down saves time and faster
Yes and you have to have the right tools some turns left hand and some turns right hand
Sometimes you have to torch the rotor or drum brake I was wondering why? I also wanted to see if it clips onto the rotor when putting back the caliper or does it click?
I wish I had seen this video when it first came out, This was Almost 10 years ago! what year did you get the pt crusier and why did you get rid of the car
During this process, Is any consideration given to the operation of the "Emergency Brake"? I don't know, that is what I am looking for.
18:26 I see a mustache! Re-watching old videos, keep it up.
Taylor Bozarth think that's an eye brow.
He's got three hands. No wonder he is good at this!
I think this is your first time doing brakes. I'm exhausted just by watching. Improper used of the piston compresor and calling fuel line to a brake fluid one. Good luck on the next one.
I have a question, I was driving with the handbrake up for less than 0.8 miles and I was parking/reversing. Will my brakes be damaged? I could hear some noise and sounds
i almost threw my phone away when i heard the line "we are gonna oil the brakes"
Chris you need to redo this video and bring it up to crispix standards
heyy thnx it is very useful Vid , but i have 2 questions
1. is it okay if we did not bleed the fluid when squeezing the calliper back .
2, is the anti-seaze okay
As long as you do not open the system, you do not need to bleed it.
You do not need to open and bleed the system. Simply Pol off the master cylinder reservoir lid like mentioned @ 14:25.
Hi Chris you don’t have to change the Rotors ?
How do you do the e breaks on a 1995 Ford Explorer 4x4
can you restore a brake rotor the same way you do with a break drum?
Chris I didn’t see you change the rotors is that ok ?
Hey guys i have a problem... i forgot which way hole the 2 slide pins go in (top or bottom for rear left and right) on a honda odyssey 2005
i have a rear brake with a parking brake on it. The master cilinder should be rotate inwards. but how should i do it?
What year did you get your PT cruiser and why did you get rid of it
I changed the both rear brake and when is finished I test drive and want to chnage the both front and I see the fron disk was very hot , I don't know hot to fix that any quick answer will be wonderful
That’s probably because it is new. How hot does it get?
@@chrisfix I cut the bolt 🔩 when I open the front tire and It was so hot , do I need to reduce the oil brake or
hi Im a bit confused, eric the carguy does a 2002 cruiser rear wheel brake job, but its not disc/pads, its drum and shoe brakes, I have a 2002 2ltr and the rear brakes are same has yours, so my question is I guess did chrysler do two types of rear brakes on some cruisers,
you did a great job on your vid graham
Two types of PT Cruiser brakes in the rear. Full drum and disc with e-brake shoes in the hat. The disc brakes have a piston with self adjusting cable and a connection to the e-brake. Rear discs have pads but also an inner brake shoe for just the e-brake.
Good video, I have a question. How do I know the amount of pounds that each screw carries?
jonathan toribio usually your cars Manual will have all of the cars specs in it
can these tips work on pt cruiser 2003?
You seemed to really struggle with this setup compared to the Fords/Mazda you worked on. Are Chryslers generally like that?
Yes! With everything!
I just changed a ball joint and had to remove the caliper. when put it back on it makes a screeching noise when the car is moving. like something metal on metal. any ideas that could help me address the problem and fix?
Dust shield is bent straighten so not touching rotor
fuel line or brake line, it's all good, I know what you meant, lol
If the caliper wont come off because of the notches on the pads you just pull it toward you by hand and then itll come right off!!
2012 Changing the Rear Brake Pads...
2020: HEY GUYS CHRIS FIX HERE
Why would you need to releave pressure in the brake line, unless you added fluid since your last break job? Don't you want the pressure to return to its original level?
oh men those kind of car is a pain to fix them i dont like at all thanks chris for the video i hop you gonna make another new videos
How can I do this on a squarebody S10
o how you have grown with your skill set lol all that oil greace you got on the break pad killed me a little inside lol
+rocketrambo20 haha yea this old video is def the very start of it all
ChrisFix I just want to thank you for how much money you have saved me and giving me the confidence to take on a lot of these projects
You can just unbolt the caliper then prize it off the disc with a screw driver then push the piston back with water pump pliers
Do i u put the car in neutral to make the rotors turn
haha, which step do you pump the brakes?
I need your thoughts what would cause the brakes to sease up and not work properly?
You have a couple things that could cause that, first thing is the piston itself that wil get some rust spots on it so it wil get stuck, second thins are the guide pins also same thing they wel get some rust on them and not move properly, third one are the pads itself they can get stuck also because of rust
Hello. Can you help me with replacing my front right stereo speaker on my 08 Honda Civic 2 door coupe. Thanks.
Rj Blue Unfortunately I do not have a honda civic to work on. If I get a Civic to work on I will make a video for you!
My PT emergency brake got stuck. The handle wont go down at all, it is stuck even if I try to push the button to release it. Any ideas? the car had been sitting for months. Drove it around for a bit, parked it at an incline I put the ebrake all the way up and now I can't get the handle to go down. Any ideas? please help. thank you. ;(
Go to the rear brakes and use a pry bar on the brake itself to force it (when the handle is in the down position).
Emergency cable is frozen in the steel jacket at the rear wheel. You can hit the brake shoes in rear sharply with a hammer to jar it free. If that dont work replace the cable. A old mechanic quick trick is disconnect cable at rear brake. You just wont have use of emergency brake.
