Great videos Chris...very helpful to the home mechanic...i recently bought a 98 k3500 4x4 dually, and used your video as a guide to do the rear shoes / drums work. Thanks for your simple yet thorough and accurate explanations.
Very helpful. Camera is stable, lighting is good, sound is good, everything is good. You should train other youtubers on how to make REAL 'how to' videos. Thank you for taking the time to do it right - it's so refreshing.

Just making a point Chris, @ 6:30, when your using brake cleaner & a wire brush you should use a face mask and not breathe in those chemicals & brake dust. Any particulate that gets into your lungs can cause irritation and illness, but some are more dangerous than others. Brake dust can be particularly harmful and should be handled with caution! One common ingredient in brake pads is asbestos, which is harmful if inhaled. Just a heads up.

I don't give praise easily. A lot of You Tube content on "How To" has omissions or hyped up tutors, or both. This video was like being in the classroom with a tutor who inspires confidence, and displays obvious understanding of the task. Calm narrative, plenty of detail, and encouragement with additional detail (slave cylinder replacement) if that was also required. There is no rating system for You Tube video's I'm aware of. If there was, I'd give this one the full 5 Star rating.
Thanks for the awesome videos Chris, they have saved me a ton of cash, your camera angles and lighting along with close ups are the best!! Keep up the great work and the verbal directions while filming.
This video is a perfect example of why Chrisfix is so popular. I watched another video and thought there was no way I would even attempt changing my rear brakes. I watched this video and have much more confidence. Thanks so much, Chrisfix!!!!
Other guys made this look difficult and the thought of paying someone to do my rear drums entered my mind. Your video inspired me to do it myself. Great descriptions and detail. Keep them coming!

That's what I used. Replacing those pins was the second hardest thing for me on this job. The hardest one by far was unseizing the nut of the brake line to change the cylinder. I had to use a propane torch and a vise grip to undo it and it took a looong time!
Excellent Video. Thank you, thank you, Thank you! My 15 year old Ranger has only 85k but recently a brake shop had to replace a rusted out brake line in the back. Ripped me off $$$$ but that's another story. They also claimed that I needed new rear brakes but I declined their further rip-off. I've done lots of disk brakes but not many drums. Got one drum off but not the other. It was stuck to the plate behind it (no movement between the drum and the studs). I pounded on it to no avail and then followed your heating instructions. As I heated it up it made a loud "pop" so I continued all the way around and it made another "pop". It's key you don't heat up the center where the axel comes through. Grabbed it with my thick gloves and slid it right off. The brakes were barely warn but there was a lot of rust etc. I cleaned it up a little and put anti seize compound on the surfaces that were stuck on both wheels and we are good to go for another 100k. Thanks again.
I haven't done drum brakes since I was ~12. Chris explains all this so well that I don't have any worries about passing the shade-tree mechanic gene along to my son (good mother-son bonding :D ). Thanks, man!
This was very helpful and well done. I have one tip though, if it is a 25+ year old car, which many cars with drum brakes are, you have to be careful when cleaning out the backing plate etc. Old brake shoes often contained asbestos fibers and the dust that has been collecting inside the drums is therefore potentially hazardous to your health. So I always wear a respirator during the cleaning.
Hi Chris . . . I watched this video a couple of years ago and it helped me. Just re-watched it for review since I'm going to change the brakes on a different car this weekend. Thanks, again.
I've done a lot of brake jobs over the years. Watched your video 'just because' & wanted to compliment you on it. Maybe should address topic of machining the drums, but it's still very nicely done and a good length for viewers, I think.
DIY Videos are in abundance, but organized, articulate presentations are few and far apart. The ChrisFix videos are among the best I have seen on RUclips.
After 7 years later I am watching this v/clip from yours. Thank you so much bro. You explained step by step very clear. Now I understand how is the automatic tension for brake shoes. Love your video. 🤓 May 26/2021 watching from Houston-TX.
Gotta replace the rear drum brakes on my corolla, my uncle is scared to do the drum brakes since hes never done it before, this video is really informative! Gonna try it out this weekend.

robert loffredo Thanks a lot Robert! That is the idea with my videos! I am glad they are teaching you a lot and they want to make you work on your own cars!
This is a great video. Thought I would watch it to "remember" how to do this since it has been so long. I really like the safety reminders. The brake spring adjuster tool is very helpful and it would be great if in a future video (if you are still doing this) contains suggestions on how to use. We knew a guy growing up who poked one of his eyes out doing a drum brake job. Back then, no one wore safety glasses. Thanks again!
Chris you really have the knack to explain the way to do jobs at hand with out getting all technical! Very helpful video! thanks a lot! you saved me a lot of $$$ and headaches!
Ok Chrisfix ur video tutorial about drum brake is very knowledgeable to me,specially that I am a automotive student, tnx Chrisfix for sharing ur knowledge, for me ur a very good mechanic instructor.😀
after many years of setting brakes shoes myself i bought a tool to set them. just set to the inside of the drum then place it on the shoes adjust adjuster up to gauge and your done. there set correct first time, it was on special offer £10 bargain time saver, only bought it because it was cheap and i wanted to try it . it's brilliant
I've been a subscriber for a while, and most times i just watch the videos for fun. I enjoy mechanic work, and its interesting to learn from someone elses perslective.

Your excellent video reminded me to check the drum brakes on my 2001 Taurus since it has been 120K and 7 years. The Taurus drum brakes are identical to this video which made it extra helpful. As a DIYer I have done many drum and disk brake jobs on family cars over the years but with disk brakes being more common now, it's been 10 yrs. since I worked on drum brakes. I almost forgot how they can be a PITA. ( I had a 1971 Cutlass with front and rear drum brakes for 20 yrs.) I discovered that the Taurus needed shoes and both sides had leaking wheel cylinders. The most difficult part to replace was the big spring that connects the shoes at the bottom. I tried for over 15 minutes to manhandle stretch and connect it using pliers like you did but to no avail. My grip strength is not as good as it once was in my youth. I finally figured out a way to connect the spring using minimal effort with a small screwdriver as a lever. I ran a skinny Craftsman screwdriver through the end spring loop and put screwdriver tip in the shoe hole and levered it in using another screwdriver to push spring into hole. It took about 10 seconds on the first try on both sides of the car. After the two sides were completed, I bled all four wheel brakes in the correct order using a "one person brake bleeder" that I made after watching your "How to Video" on the bleeder. Thankyou for making your high quality videos as I can't imagine the amount of effort and time it must take. Since I am retired now, I am always looking for new things to learn and get more use out of my mostly Craftsman tools. Sorry for the long comments but I wanted you to know I appreciate and benefited from your fine videos.
ChrisFix Me and my dad was able to replace the wheel cylinders and fix the handbrake which hasnt worked for a while in a 96 accord. Now with the spring that was dangling in the drum fixed and the handbrake lever adjusted, it works better, but needs new bands that allow the drum to function (I was stupid to remove the whole center console where there was a access panel to access the adjustment screws in the center compartment) Luckily i had a cordless drill
Check out the pics on my post showing the results cleaning headlights using toothpaste and an electric toothbrush. And i did not mask it off and toothpaste got on the paint. Luckily no visible scratches
Awesome video! Trying to show my teenager how to work on his own car. This video will be very helpful next week when we change his brakes... Thanks for sharing.
elias R. Awesome! I am glad the video was helpful! I have a lot of easy to follow videos like this which will help teach your son how to fix cars so check them out!
Good clean instructions. I also use locking vice grips so it does not slip off while stretching the springs. It also helps to bang around on the pads with your hands to make sure all is set in place.
Thank you Mr. Fix, you have done a masterful job with demonstrating how to service these drum brakes not to mention the finer points of adjustment such as the star wheel and the adjuster lever, I learned a lot, once more thank you.
Quick tip once both set are done press the brakes and set the e brake a few times then go back and recheck your adjustment. They will usually need a slight bit of adjustment again. Great video!!

Thanks a lot! I am glad the videos are helpful!
I give this video my highest score.
It's clear, concise,safe,and thorough,
After watching this video you know it's time to do the brakes and stop watching videos. this video covers it all
I watched this video a couple of years ago and it helped me.
Well done, thorough yet simple presentation, with closeup video so that a novice can see exactly how it's done without guessing. Thank you.
May 26/2021 watching from Houston-TX.
dude, thank you so much for these videos...i hope you are making a fortune out of them because you deserve it
This is sooo helpful and explained so thoroughly. Am about to take on my own rear brake overhaul and your videos have helped immensely
Gotta replace the rear drum brakes on my corolla, my uncle is scared to do the drum brakes since hes never done it before, this video is really informative! Gonna try it out this weekend.
This is the best auto repair video I've ever watched; quality video with good explanation. well done buddy, keep it up.
+Chuck Obiora Thanks Chuck! Glad the video was helpful!
It's a real gift that there is someone like you to teach people how to save money doing their own brakes
+mtadriverdave1 Thanks!
Chris, you are THE BEST GUY EVER man! I have a Honda Civic, and I just can't wait to get these how-to's and start working on my car.
Best regards from Argentina!
Esteban Szittyay Awesome Esteban! Glad the videos are helpful!
I did my drum brakes long time ago. No camera help, but draw pictures. Used two basic tools like yours. Very difficult work. Enjoy your video
Awesome video. I have no automotive repair skills but after watching your videos, I wanna jump in and do my brakes on my Honda Civic & Jeep Tj ( even though they're fine). I just wanna try it!!
Your videos are great, especially for guys like myself.
robert loffredo Thanks a lot Robert!
Thanks! Glad the video was helpful and helped you save money!!!
Most descriptive vids on RUclips, I'm not bad on the tools, but I find yours are really east to follow, great job
+maxgiovanna1966 Thanks a lot! Glad they are helpful!
I love that one thing left, you made this easy to follow and look easy, thanks man
I've been a subscriber for a while, and most times i just watch the videos for fun. I enjoy mechanic work, and its interesting to learn from someone elses perslective.
of all the videos I have watched this one and the one on the Toyota were THE MOST helpful, esp the springs. Thank you, great job on the step by step!
Im glad the videos are helpful!
Dude I love how u explain everything, u really know how to show us viewers how to take apart n put back parts in da simplest way.. I love watching any of ur video's Chris Fix.. keep posting n I'll keep watching brother.. 👍💪👌
Awesome job! Despite working on cars for years I’ve never had to deal with brake drums. This will make my job a whole lot easier.
Sorry for the long comments but I wanted you to know I appreciate and benefited from your fine videos.
smith wesson This is what I love to hear! I am glad you used a bunch of my videos to help you with your brake job! That is awesome!
Peter Kapica Good work!
I have watched this multiple times and don't even have a car with drum brakes. Your videos are addicting.
I'm glad you find the videos addicting! That means you're learning a lot :p
ChrisFix haha true. Some of the stuff I already know how to do and I watch anyway. Keep killing it!
Your video gave me courage to go buy rear brakes, drums and hardware and was done in two hrs. Great video.
Good clean instructions.
I also use locking vice grips so it does not slip off while stretching the springs.
It also helps to bang around on the pads with your hands to make sure all is set in place.
This is one of the best repair videos I have seen on RUclips. EXCELLENT
By far the best on RUclips! You just can't beat a ChrisFix video.
This is the Best drum brake video in RUclips! Thank you Chris!!!!
Glad the video was helpful!
This is what I call a Very helpful video, High quality, without garbage!.........Neat!
🙏
Thank you Mr. Fix, you have done a masterful job with demonstrating how to service these drum brakes not to mention the finer points of adjustment such as the star wheel and the adjuster lever, I learned a lot, once more thank you.
+Ivor Reynolds Awesome! I am glad you learned a lot!
I am doing this tomorrow! This is the best video I have found you gave me confidence!
So far you make the easiest DIY videos. Keep up the great work! It helps amateurs like me a ton!
Best teaching video in RUclips, I like it. Thank you, Chris.
Thanks a lot!
Quick tip once both set are done press the brakes and set the e brake a few times then go back and recheck your adjustment. They will usually need a slight bit of adjustment again. Great video!!
Chris I learn more from your videos than I do from my instructors at school - thank you very much!!
+Cj capp That is great! Glad to hear it!
