Dad taught me how these are done over 50 years ago. He taught me to only do one side at a time and use the other as a reference if needed. Today with cell phone cameras, it's not as necessary, but sometimes seeing the physical brake parts installed is better than a photo. Very well explained. 👍

Don't use the screwdriver and pliers method, you might end up like my scarred eyebrow; I hit myself with pliers while trying to pull the spring on. I nearly went blind in one eye, but I only hit myself in the eyebrow. It's best to use the right tool. That said, I goofed like this because to get close enough to attempt putting the spring on, I _really_ had to tug on the pliers hard. Maybe other springs aren't as tough?

He's great in a lot of ways but his critical addition to his DIY vids is the use of POV shots, it adds so much in terms of being able to see everything he is doing and giving you a better sense of positioning and confidence. It's such a no brained to shoot videos in this manner but so few people bother with it. A POV shot makes all the difference imo

Depends. If it's rear wheel drive (assuming the drums are on the rear) and put in drive, hubs will spin at an increasingly faster rate until max rotational speed is reached. At that point, either catastrophic failure or heat builds up in the diff and it fails after x amount of time. Only way to stop it is to turn off the vehicle or place it in neutral until the rotation stops. If it's front wheel drive, the brakes will grab the rotors and stop the wheels/hubs.
Hey Hank's Adventure, could I ask you...I recently got my rear drum brakes replaced as the shoes were worn down. Since the break job I have been getting like a chirping noise when braking (gentle braking like approaching a red light, not forceful braking). It sounds like a rubbing or catching, and the "chirp" is faster or slower relative to yr speed of the car. The mechanic tried to fob me off saying it was maybe wheel bearing or shocks/struts, but it only happens when breaking and I only noticed it since the brake job. Could it be something as simple as the shoe rubbing on the backing plate or needing some lubrication? Thank you for reading this! 🙏
@@tonygibbons5Maybe your rear drum brakes shoes need to be adjusted with the star wheel adjuster that usually located at the bottom or sometimes the top on some makes. Did you ever service the front brakes? Maybe you need to replace the pads and rotors for your front disc brakes?
I've been needing my drums brakes changed for a couple months now. I was super nervous about doing it myself given how many little parts there are. as an OLD man I never had a camera to take photos of the brake ...I just take the other drum off and look at the other brake as reference...by the way,you provide a superb service, I'm sure folks are very appreciative...thank you!!!
The best explanation of drum brakes I have heard. I've been working on stuff for 25+ years and drum brakes were still intimidating. I was regearing my rear end, and was more worried about the drums than setting up the R&P 🤷♂️. I have successfully installed drum brakes a few times, but it has always been a struggle. The explanation of what exactly everything does took the misery out of it. I still believe these were invented by Rube Goldberg, but at least I have a basic understanding of why these are assembled the way they are. Thanks for yet another excellent tutorial.
Excellent video. I really like Chris' positive attitude and am so thankful for the time he puts into these. I just did my Ranger rear drums and set the self adjuster just a bit too tight. It was hard to separate the friction from the brake shoes from the usual friction of moving the rear end and driveshaft, so I thought it was correct, but obviously wasn't. So went for a test drive and smelled burning brakes. Put my hand on the rim and drum and it was smoking hot. So backed off the self adjuster a few turns and now all is well. Anyway, thought others could learn from my misstep. So doesn't hurt to take it for a test drive and put your hand (carefully) on the rims and drums afterwards, just to be sure there's no friction.
Been doing brakes for many years, about over a decade. Never knew about the wrench trick for the springs. Very nice video, and everything is 100% spot on. I've seen some shops do a lot worse, and cut corners, but not all shops do though.

I've put this off forever,paying through the nose to have a mechanic do them for me. One of the best how-to videos I've seen ( there's one guy who fixes lawnmowers that's as concise as you) !!! You make videos that explain the whole process so well. I've been working on my own stuff since I was a kid, but there were some parts I'd never had to replace. My wife only knew what she could figure out on her own. With your help, we've done tie rod ends, a MAF sensor, struts, and this weekend we're tackling drum brakes. This is probably the best tip for drum brakes, and I used the hell out of it. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like no matter how many reference pictures I take I always end up missing an angle I need.
hey Chris, a new feature I think some people might like is in the end of your vid you say how much it cost to do the job at home and how much it might cost at the mechanic. so we can see how much were actually saving
It would be nice, he did have some kind of cost sheet at some point if memory serves me well, but, there's no doubt that you're saving money (and if you do it right, safety) by doing it yourself. I'm not advocating everyone do it, if you're not certain about it, by all means, spring for the top quality shop to do it, but for any person that knows how to hold a screwdriver right, this is much more economic.
Ive gone from watching this channel in 4th grade to actually working on my first car in 11th grade, pulling out and working on a 1993 Cadillac Deville (gold key!) And thank god it isnt a northstar! I just think its surreal ive been watching these and now im actually doing it, thanks Chris

I just got a 1989 Pontiac Firebird and they come with drum brakes which I find quite ridiculous so I’ve been waiting for a ChrisFix video on how to do a disc conversion.

You rock bruv. Your vids have helped me do disk brakes on 3 cars, drum brakes on my Ranger, major annual servicing on 3 different vehicles, and a timing belt and water pump. Appreciate the time you've taken and wanted to say thank you.
He did a very nice job on this video. I have always reused the old hardware and never had any problems with them. When possible I like to remove the drum and use a regular water hose and just hose off everything inside the brakes. It saves on using chemicals and works for me. Last, when installing or uninstalling the top springs I clamp the vise grips on to the top of the spring and pull the spring over the top post. You can also have a machine shop turn your drums if they aren't to bad in order to save some money.
Bought a 2003 Ranger for work. Found out both drums were seized up. Have never worked on drum brakes before. As usual I watched a ChrisFix video and had no issues removing drums that were stuck, replaced the shoes, hardware and wheel cylinders. Had a leaky brake line fitting, took care of that as well (not sure if you have a brake line bending video). You're the man. Thank You

I did it!!!! Without the proper tools too. Thank you again. I have ordered the tools. The set I did we were swapping an axel on a 2001 dodge pickup. My friend said to just cut off the E-brake, but I wanted to keep them. They had been cut off the replacement axel but it had new brakes on it. I changed the wheel cylinders since I had to take everything off anyway and we have to run new brake lines. The differential vent goes through the splitter for the rear brakes and it was stuck. While running for parts, the brakes started going bad on my GMC pickup, at least I have had some training. Thank you so much.

I worked as a service mechanic apprentice for about one and a half year.. not once during the time I got this many good advices. I'm actually a bit shocked as to how many times we just reused all the old parts. Just replaced the shoes and the drums and called it a day. If only I had known of this. Thank you so very very much for this detailed step by step video on how to change the drums! Here in the last month I've been having to do repair work on my own Toyota sienna. Gas prices are so high and repair costs have gone up. I am 60 years old and just a couple days ago, I replaced the two complete replacement headlights and front brake pads. Now I have to change the drums and I'm going to get a whole kit so that way the back side will be completely new. And your video has shown me excellent details on how to repair this!

!!!! The self adjusters only work when the car is in reverse and you apply the brakes, hard !!!! They are designed so the adjusting arm wont be able to engage another tooth and over tighten, so no worries. Good video, thanks Chris.

After I did the rear brakes, I usually start to back up slowly and apply the brakes. This helps the self-adjusters to adjust. I am an old man and that was how I was taught back in 1969 which has worked for me all these years.

1. Consider wearing a dust mask. Brake dust is not very good for human bodies. 2. A (superior?) alternative to a flare nut wrench is the Vise Grips Locking Wrench. I wouldn't of used those drums, The one's that was on it was probably okay and the one's he put on don't look safe. If I really need a new drum I would try to pull a OEM one from the junkyard before using that one. I wouldn't of used so much anti seize. I wouldn't of replaced the cylinder with that cheap auto parts store one that's made by a mistry brand probably equal to the cheapest one you can get on the internet and if buying from a auto parts store ends up costing as much as a better brand would of on rock auto or some place like that, but why crack open your brake system to replace that with one that is more likely to fail then the factory one. You're going to probably be able to see it if the factory one is leaking but the new one could leak and you wont even know.

When I put the new drums on, I adjust the shoes before I slide the drums on so that the drums have a slight amount of friction. This is usually all you need for initial adjustment I also gravity bleed the brakes on the side I finished while working on the other side. Just make sure the master cylinder reservoir doesn't run dry!
Thanks Chris! I've done drum brakes before, and never like doing them, mostly because I'm not familiar with them (pics are a huge help). This video will make a great reference to keep things on track in the future. I've replaced motors, done head gaskets, and various other big jobs, but for some reason, I hate drum brakes. Ha ha. I ALWAYS (and I recommend you also watch multiple videos of the same fix.) Yet this guy has been consistently the best (to my acutual experience under the car), gives more tips, covers multiple scenarios, and the videos are consice.
I just spent 6 hours on one because I couldn’t fit the drum back on. Turns out I just needed to squeeze the shoes in while fitting the drum on. Dang it lol
This is such a helpful channel. Hadn't done drum brakes in about ten years and wanted a refresher before I jumped in. Only thing that this video doesn't mention is rusty brake lines. If you have an old rusty car, trying to change the wheel cylinder can quickly turn into a giant headache. If the nut doesn't spin freely, you'll end up twisting off the brake line. In those cases, I'd definitely leave the old cylinder on there if it's not leaking.

Most cars still use drum hardware inside the rear rotor for the parking brakes unless you have it on the caliper like on those new calipers he bought. I have seen those parking brake shoes for disc brakes wear out or the brake material gets cracked or even separate off of the shoe on older vehicles.

After watching Chris do the front wheel bearing video, I got real brave and did both of mine. Compared to that beast, doing the rear drums seems like a birthday party.
How to replace drum brakes: 1. Find aftermarket kit of disk brakes for originally axle with drum brakes 2. Remove drum brakes 3. Smash em with hammer, burn em, pour acid on em 4. Install disk brakes kit
I'm running an o2 Caravan as a delivery vehicle. I've had some mechanics replace parts on it to be able to satisfy initial inspection. But considering that I put on the vehicle in 6 months about as many kilometers as most people put on their vehicle in three to five years. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for your repair videos just like I did years ago with my 97 and 93 f150s so I can bring my repair bills back into a reasonable level. The only thing I wish I had. Was a stand of some sort so I can get underneath the dark thing and line X everything that I could. I know this is an old video chris. But thank you for taking the time to go through as much as you have over the years
Rear brakes are used about 20% of the time but also depends on how you drive such as you do a lot of hauling in a truck or towing. I love doing drum brakes they're not around much anymore. Surprised you didn't mention to back off the self adjuster through the access port in the back of the backing plate. That's another way to get the drum off

Patrick Dow they claim that the reason why they put drums in the rear is for you don't have to worry about your rotors and disc brake pads getting screwed up and they claim that sand doesn't get inside the drums well that is a big lie LOL. But anyways that's what they claim

You should do a series in an atv. Even if you don't know much about them they probably aren't that different that cars. I would love it. I live how your videos are and you never leave me with questions. And I do have an atv that I would like to work on my self but sometimes when I'm doing more complicated stuff I don't because I do t know how to. Would love to see you do that

Disc brakes offer much better stopping power than drum brakes and they don't cost much more than drums. Maintenance of disc brakes is much easier too. There's no reason in this day and age to bother with drum brakes.

He put way too much anti seize. When it gets hot it will run. Keep it super thin everywhere , except on threads. Then go thorough, but thin.

I've been needing my drums brakes changed for a couple months now. I was super nervous about doing it myself given how many little parts there are. But I finally did them today and it really wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. Words cannot express how happy I was to finally learn and replace drum brakes myself! Thanks Chris ❤
as an OLD man I never had a camera to take photos of the brake ...I just take the other drum off and look at the other brake as reference...by the way,you provide a superb service, I'm sure folks are very appreciative...thank you!!!
The best explanation of drum brakes I have heard. I've been working on stuff for 25+ years and drum brakes were still intimidating. I was regearing my rear end, and was more worried about the drums than setting up the R&P 🤷♂️. I have successfully installed drum brakes a few times, but it has always been a struggle. The explanation of what exactly everything does took the misery out of it. I still believe these were invented by Rube Goldberg, but at least I have a basic understanding of why these are assembled the way they are. Thanks for yet another excellent tutorial.
Excellent video. I really like Chris' positive attitude and am so thankful for the time he puts into these. I just did my Ranger rear drums and set the self adjuster just a bit too tight. It was hard to separate the friction from the brake shoes from the usual friction of moving the rear end and driveshaft, so I thought it was correct, but obviously wasn't. So went for a test drive and smelled burning brakes. Put my hand on the rim and drum and it was smoking hot. So backed off the self adjuster a few turns and now all is well. Anyway, thought others could learn from my misstep. So doesn't hurt to take it for a test drive and put your hand (carefully) on the rims and drums afterwards, just to be sure there's no friction.
Been doing brakes for many years, about over a decade. Never knew about the wrench trick for the springs. Very nice video, and everything is 100% spot on. I've seen some shops do a lot worse, and cut corners, but not all shops do though.

Little tip: You could do one drum at a time, to use a live reference(your other drum with the springs on) on the other side of your car :)

This is probably the best tip for drum brakes, and I used the hell out of it. I don't know about anyone else, but it seems like no matter how many reference pictures I take I always end up missing an angle I need.

It would be nice, he did have some kind of cost sheet at some point if memory serves me well, but, there's no doubt that you're saving money (and if you do it right, safety) by doing it yourself. I'm not advocating everyone do it, if you're not certain about it, by all means, spring for the top quality shop to do it, but for any person that knows how to hold a screwdriver right, this is much more economic.
You'd definitely save a lot doing it yourself. how much? I don't know. But it's worth it anyway

You rock bruv. Your vids have helped me do disk brakes on 3 cars, drum brakes on my Ranger, major annual servicing on 3 different vehicles, and a timing belt and water pump. Appreciate the time you've taken and wanted to say thank you.
He did a very nice job on this video. I have always reused the old hardware and never had any problems with them. When possible I like to remove the drum and use a regular water hose and just hose off everything inside the brakes. It saves on using chemicals and works for me. Last, when installing or uninstalling the top springs I clamp the vise grips on to the top of the spring and pull the spring over the top post. You can also have a machine shop turn your drums if they aren't to bad in order to save some money.
Bought a 2003 Ranger for work. Found out both drums were seized up. Have never worked on drum brakes before. As usual I watched a ChrisFix video and had no issues removing drums that were stuck, replaced the shoes, hardware and wheel cylinders. Had a leaky brake line fitting, took care of that as well (not sure if you have a brake line bending video). You're the man. Thank You

I did it!!!! Without the proper tools too. Thank you again. I have ordered the tools. The set I did we were swapping an axel on a 2001 dodge pickup. My friend said to just cut off the E-brake, but I wanted to keep them. They had been cut off the replacement axel but it had new brakes on it. I changed the wheel cylinders since I had to take everything off anyway and we have to run new brake lines. The differential vent goes through the splitter for the rear brakes and it was stuck. While running for parts, the brakes started going bad on my GMC pickup, at least I have had some training. Thank you so much.

I worked as a service mechanic apprentice for about one and a half year.. not once during the time I got this many good advices. I'm actually a bit shocked as to how many times we just reused all the old parts. Just replaced the shoes and the drums and called it a day. If only I had known of this. Thank you so very very much for this detailed step by step video on how to change the drums! Here in the last month I've been having to do repair work on my own Toyota sienna. Gas prices are so high and repair costs have gone up. I am 60 years old and just a couple days ago, I replaced the two complete replacement headlights and front brake pads. Now I have to change the drums and I'm going to get a whole kit so that way the back side will be completely new. And your video has shown me excellent details on how to repair this!

!!!! The self adjusters only work when the car is in reverse and you apply the brakes, hard !!!! They are designed so the adjusting arm wont be able to engage another tooth and over tighten, so no worries. Good video, thanks Chris.

After I did the rear brakes, I usually start to back up slowly and apply the brakes. This helps the self-adjusters to adjust. I am an old man and that was how I was taught back in 1969 which has worked for me all these years.

1. Consider wearing a dust mask. Brake dust is not very good for human bodies.
2. A (superior?) alternative to a flare nut wrench is the Vise Grips Locking Wrench. It's only a few dollars more and one Vise Grip adjusts to several sizes of flare nut.

I wouldn't of used those drums, The one's that was on it was probably okay and the one's he put on don't look safe. If I really need a new drum I would try to pull a OEM one from the junkyard before using that one.
I wouldn't of used so much anti seize.
I wouldn't of replaced the cylinder with that cheap auto parts store one that's made by a mistry brand probably equal to the cheapest one you can get on the internet and if buying from a auto parts store ends up costing as much as a better brand would of on rock auto or some place like that, but why crack open your brake system to replace that with one that is more likely to fail then the factory one. You're going to probably be able to see it if the factory one is leaking but the new one could leak and you wont even know.
All2skitzd He's going to be converting it all over to disc brakes so he probably just got the cheapest crap he could buy for the sake of making the video.
***** Yeah, he said in the video that advanced hooked him up with the parts, I was just saying as far as tips and suggestions go when doing a job like this.
When I put the new drums on, I adjust the shoes before I slide the drums on so that the drums have a slight amount of friction. This is usually all you need for initial adjustment I also gravity bleed the brakes on the side I finished while working on the other side. Just make sure the master cylinder reservoir doesn't run dry!
Thanks Chris! I've done drum brakes before, and never like doing them, mostly because I'm not familiar with them (pics are a huge help). This video will make a great reference to keep things on track in the future. I've replaced motors, done head gaskets, and various other big jobs, but for some reason, I hate drum brakes. Ha ha. I just spent 6 hours on one because I couldn’t fit the drum back on. Turns out I just needed to squeeze the shoes in while fitting the drum on. Dang it lol

This is such a helpful channel. Hadn't done drum brakes in about ten years and wanted a refresher before I jumped in.
Only thing that this video doesn't mention is rusty brake lines. If you have an old rusty car, trying to change the wheel cylinder can quickly turn into a giant headache. If the nut doesn't spin freely, you'll end up twisting off the brake line. In those cases, I'd definitely leave the old cylinder on there if it's not leaking.

Most cars still use drum hardware inside the rear rotor for the parking brakes unless you have it on the caliper like on those new calipers he bought. I have seen those parking brake shoes for disc brakes wear out or the brake material gets cracked or even separate off of the shoe on older vehicles.

1. Find aftermarket kit of disk brakes for originally axle with drum brakes
2. Remove drum brakes
3. Smash em with hammer, burn em, pour acid on em
4. Install disk brakes kit

How to replace back brakes on a 1994 Ford f150
I'm running an o2 Caravan as a delivery vehicle. I've had some mechanics replace parts on it to be able to satisfy initial inspection. But considering that I put on the vehicle in 6 months about as many kilometers as most people put on their vehicle in three to five years. I'm going to be keeping an eye out for your repair videos just like I did years ago with my 97 and 93 f150s so I can bring my repair bills back into a reasonable level. The only thing I wish I had. Was a stand of some sort so I can get underneath the dark thing and line X everything that I could. I know this is an old video chris. But thank you for taking the time to go through as much as you have over the years
Rear brakes are used about 20% of the time but also depends on how you drive such as you do a lot of hauling in a truck or towing. I love doing drum brakes they're not around much anymore. Surprised you didn't mention to back off the self adjuster through the access port in the back of the backing plate. That's another way to get the drum off

why would you want to do that
Disc brakes offer much better stopping power than drum brakes and they don't cost much more than drums. Maintenance of disc brakes is much easier too. There's no reason in this day and age to bother with drum brakes.
The only reason we even see drum breaks is because car companies mass produce vehicles and drum brakes are cheaper
