Great video. What he skipped over with a cut is that that adjustment screw for the brake shoes is VERY difficult to adjust. DO NOT touch it if you don't have to. Tightening the shoes is easy.......loosening them is very difficult. Took me 45 minutes to adjust one after I made the shoes way too tight by mistake. Learn from my failure.....lol.
Great video !! Not a lot of "Ummmm"s and "you knows.."s that some videos are loaded with. Great speaking voice and you clearly know what you're doing. Thanks for helping me save myself some money. I was comfortable with the disc pads in the front but the springs on the rear drum brakes I was apprehensive about. You made it a snap to get it done. Great info on the brake grease and anti-seize also. Best video I've seen on this procedure by a MILE.
Took my car to firestone the brakes were grinding. They told me they looked at them and they were fine. I asked if they took off the drums and they said they looked through "the peephole". The noise I was hearing was supposedly something rattling around in my trunk. I took off the drums and the shoes were down to bare metal. I made a video confronting the mechanic and used this video to install my own brakes.
best video. I seen probably all of the ones for this vehicle and sadly I have spent 3 hours trying to do one side.... and the difference between this and other videos is that you put in retaining spring and locking nut at the end. this helped me.

Thank you for this. Fortunately I work in a shop with all the tools I could ever need. After freaking out about the damn springs I decided to take an angle grinder to make a slot in my screwdriver so they stopped slipping off.
Thank you. This living room mechanic couldn't have done it without you. One extra trick I figured out was to take the u-shaped retaining clip off the parking brake, use a vise grip pliers with one jaw on the pried open end of the clip and the other jaw tip grabbing the stud the clip is around. Squeeze and it pushes retaining clip off . Similar technique tomout back on.
When you bleed drum brakes makes sure you have the drums on, otherwise you end up damaging the brake cylinders and have to buy new ones. It just happened to me so all the work was for nothing. Have to do it all over again tomorrow with new brake cylinders.

Thanks - this was really helpful. I can do almost any disc brake pad replacement with no instruction, but I hate drum brakes rather passionately. If the brilliance of a thousand suns were to burst forth into the sky, that would be like the intensity of my hatred for drum brakes. My only crticism is that I think most people will find it easier to attach the rear spring before pinning the shoe in place; I had no trouble with that after many failed attempts to do it in the order shown here.
Thanks for this video man, helped me get thru it today. But I failed the wheel cylinder so I’ll be working on that tomorrow bc I ran out of daylight. Got the wrong parts twice so the job didn’t go as smooth as I had hoped. But this was helpful and now I have a better understanding for the finish and next time
Excellent video tutorial, so far it has helped me immensely with one side. BUT, what is the trick to loosening the star wheel adjuster from behind the backing plate? Mine seems to be locked in place and will not turn. Also, the extraction bolt method from the front will not break the drum free from the shoes. Any suggestions? My next step is to break it all to bits and replace everything inside.
Might be helpful to mention if you are using new adjusters that there is a left and right side. Unfortunately my new hardware kit came with 2 lefts. Don't throw away your old one until you check new ones. Great video
Oh and did I mention they gave me the WRONG shoes so had to take them back after struggling for a week! Now I’m at the spring part finally …..but you make it look a lot easier than it is to get the springs on….
Amazing video. I have a 2010 Corolla will this be the same step by step I can use for year. I just did my front brakes and callipers using your parts. 100% satisfied. Thanks for any helping advice
Small but important detail: the rear shoe has to sit a certain way. The bottom part of the shoe (where it sits on a metal plate) has to sit on the first “ledge”. If you push it too far, it will sit behind this ledge, and kinda feels like it’s meant to be there, but it’s not. The drum will be difficult to put on, and you will feel vibration on your brake pedal if you install it this way, since the shoe will be at an angle.
Great channel, I appreciate the information for us DIYers. I'm a firm believer in rust prevention and "Krown" application here in Canada. I don't understand why people don't spent the $100/yr. on a quality spray application (minus the brake area) and keep your car in decent condition.
Great video… I tried it and I had difficulties removing the drum, I got stuck where I needed to loosen the break shoes to remove the drum… I will try again another day
Thanks for the great video. I finally got around to doing them last night. Shoes were only half but drums were warped. When warm they would pulse badly. Im not sure turning the drums would do anything as the problem only started after they were warmed up. I had to reuse the big spring on the adjuster the new one was too tight to fit(mines a 2014 it has a single spring on the top rather than two like yours)
great video but the adjuster and adjuster holder keeps popping out when i press the brakes . the adjuster holder keeps getting caught on the gear and it just pops off. any advice please ?
Question. Do you have to purge the system by removing the brake line nut, pump the brake padel and open and close the port. It's that something that needs to be done after replacing the brake pads and rotors?
I used this video for my rear breaks, granted it took a lot longer. After pumping the breaks to get the shoes situated I lost all brakes. The wheel cylinder on the untouched side blew out because I didn’t bleed them both. I would make sure for any1 doing this to bleed both drums at the same time before you try to use the new drums
+@courtn3949 We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Oh no...I got rotors and drums replaced in my sons' 2008 Corolla but one of the calipers is spewing out brake fluid when I press on the brake peddle. Anybody have any tips? I reseated the pads into the caliper but still doing it. Broken seal? Do I need a new caliper?
Make sure your parking brake is off of course. I had one stuck so bad, the wheel doesnt even turn with parking brakes off. Also I dont recommend a hammer because brake dust gets everywhere and you dont want to breath in that stuff., use as your last resort. And theres a special tool to detached the parking brake cable easy, but whatever way is easier for you.
So while doing this I also installed a new cylinder, issue is that new cylinder blew a seal (boot is 100% intact) all the leaking is underneath the boot. I know I made an error, I’m just at a loss at what I did wrong? Anyone have suggestions?
Brake cleaner is toxic (unless it is labeled as non-toxic) and is a whole lot worse for you than the dust. If I have to use it- I do it in a highly vented area and do not breathe it. One other thing, when the axle hub is rusty, I hit it with a wire wheel to remove as much rust as possible, Other than that great vid. Mike
Had to replace drum brakes & b4 I did THAT, I ran over a median & blew out wheel cylinder. Then broke the brake line when replacing cylinder ….sigh….nothing is ever easy is it?
Great informative video…..now if you could just do something about the 115 degree weather I have to do this job in ! And did I mention there’s no shade? Don’t know if I want to cry or shoot myself…..as usual, I’ll just grin and bear it and get it done…..sigh

This was the best video I watched for all spring locations and setting the pads in place. Thank you for doing an excellent job!

Excellent video - makes task less intimidating (wish all cars have disk brakes on front *and* rear.
Such a big help, clear directions too, thank you!
Learned this in high school shop class over30 years ago.
Kind of shocked NOTHING has changed in that time.
Thank god disc brakes were invented, they are so much easier and quicker to change pads and rotors

From watching these undercarriage vids, I am so glad I don't live in the rust belt. 😂

With parking brake ON, the wheel should not move at all. Right?
THanks for a clear and concise video!!!

Great tutorial man keep up the good work
Excellent video. One of the best for shoe replacement on Corolla.
Wow, there's absolutely no effing way I could have done that without you!!!
Are there any particular brakes & rotors you would recommend & are there any we shouldn’t buy?
great video but the adjuster and adjuster holder keeps popping out when i press the brakes . the adjuster holder keeps getting caught on the gear and it just pops off. any advice please ?

Hello,
Which size on MM for the two bolts that you used for 2007 Toyota matrix ?
Thanks
clear video shots, succinct narration, thank you!
Excellent video ! Very helpful 😊thanks
Thanks for the detail in this video, timesaver!

Doesn't that parking brake lever pawl withe cable go on the INSIDE of the brake shoe? Not on the outside ?
What happens if I DO blow out one side of the cylinder? I did push it back in and secured the rubber part back around. It looks just fine?

That sounds like a difficult job if you’ve never done one before. The front brakes are so much easier.
Do you have a part number for the parking brake lever. I really need it asap
What do you do if you pop one side of the wheel cylinders off?
el video es bueno felicitaciones pero las letras no dejan ver bien las cosas que haces..gracias saludos

You had me until not replacing the wheel cylinders at the same time, why wouldn't you ? Only half the job done and waiting for a fluid leak.
Hola todo está muy bien pero tu las letras estorbaban lo que estás explicando y no dejan ver lo que estás enseñando gracias
Thanks
Either I wasted my time watching this or I ordered the wrong brakes because I have a set of brake pads for the front and rear, not drums.
It's a hassle trying to follow the video with the translation text on the screen blocking so much of it.
You missed a stud on the double check.
Spanish translation blocks a lot of the video
Hell pls remove the subtitle, i cannot see what you are doing
