Frig yeah Chris!
ChrisFix Hi Chris, I'm a big fan of your channel! I love the videos! I wanted to ask about our 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The brakes lock up out of nowhere sometimes and I was wondering what I should do to prevent this from happening again? Any kind of cleaning or lubricating tips? Thank you!

ChrisFix burning that early morning oil again.
I think this is the best quality car repair channel on youtube.
i agree
Agreed
What about ETCG?
JimsBagels Eric is good too!
the absolute best. others may come close but none are better.
I think what I like most about your videos is that when you say "this is better than that" you actually explain why. That's gold. Another great vid.
Thanks!
I Love it when Chris Say's "Good"
The level of detail Chrisfix puts into his videos is insane.
He deserves one hundred million views.

Joshua Camarena Or more then pewdiepie subscribers.
Thanks Joshua!
If only it was more accurate detail, this is 1980's brake work.
When my mom asks ,where did I learn how to fix a car -opens my phone and shows Chris fix channel
Haha awesome!
Yeah, these videos are awesome, very useful, thanks alot chris
me too I learned everything from you
When you ask your mom, "where did you learn to fix cars?" Then she pulls up chris fix.
Well you are joking vut that’s what my mom actually said when I first fixed something on my car. She was so surprised because she always told me ,,RUclips can’t teach you anything“. Well here I am fixing my car only by lookin ChrisFix‘s videos.
"Just put a dob of grease on there that will fix the squeak" -- what my friend Mike said days before he totaled his car due to not being able to stop while pulling into a parking space.
Cody'sLab lol
Cody'sLab Holy crap, Cody'sLab, dude you're awesome!
Cody'sLab I did not know RUclipsrs watched other RUclipsrs
Love your videos, haha! (typical old fan) Ugh... I hate it when RUclips Calles me names... Time to go report RUclips for harassment!
Anyone? No... ): sad days, hehe!
Must have been driving a Yugo.
Man. This guy is good. I have been a professional educator for 32 years. ChrisFix does a superior job of educating and demonstrating. Brilliant!
give the man a job
Denny Hall this is his job
I just cant help but think he be would be more valuable to a bunch of kids growing up.
I dont know of any classrooms that can hold 2,000,000 people.
This dude should run for President. He is a national treasure. Chris Fix 2024🇺🇸
you guys really are lowering the standards for who can become president
erik bakker kinda the point dude. It’s to give anybody a fighting chance of becoming president. Not just the select few rich elites. It’s called freedom
erik bakker Yeah we even almost had Hillary Clinton. Thank god America woke up. Chris Fix sure is a better choice than her.
Chris will fix America real good. He’s already helping made in USA sell!
erik bakker Those are quite low since 2016
This video right here saved me $$$ on my new 2020 truck. Dealership was trying to charge me basically an arm and leg (since it was outside warranty). After watching this, did the work myself and so much better. I'm a forever subscriber and will teach my kid this as they grow up and one day have their own vehicle. THANK YOU CHRIS FIX!

I subscribed after your first video. Retired mechanic of 50 years. You do a great job I love watching you work.
good lord. your knowledge of cars must be one of the best in your country
damn you've been retired for 50 years? you must be damn old
He didn't say "for," he said "of," smart guy.
@@BRaggles idk. 'mechanic of 50 years' implies he's been in the profession for that long. either way dude's got decades under his belt!
@@reman3000 Pretty sure BRaggles was replying to Luke's comment (the joke about OP being retired for 50 years). Obviously OP is saying he spent 50 years as a mechanic and is now retired, which is why Luke's comment was stupidly funny 😂 (oddly, BRaggles appears to have taken Luke's comment seriously and has been wooshed).
I can't even remember how many times I have asked at the garage why my brakes were squeaking and I always got cryptic answers.
Now thanks to this video I finally know! Thanks a lot, man. You are golden!
I was told by a BMW guy that my brakes were squeaking because they lacked lubricant in the pad... thankfully I knew ChrisFix had a video about fixing this!
This is the sort of thing that allows experienced backyarders take it to pro level. The generic nature of the advice makes it all the more useful...not always the case with this type of video! Concise, yet detailed.
Also, the lack of whiners in the comments is rare, and telling.
Top marks.
My dispad is moving in the callipa can't get the dispad clips 02 Toyota van making lots of noise need some help to solve this problem
agreed... i've been working as trained and licensed mechanic ( in denmark ) for the past 10 years, and i agree, he really knows his stuff.... there are some minor things i don't agree with, but all in all i really approve of this video...
This is the best DIY video I've ever seen, top quality filming and a person that can speak English clearly, what a pleasure to watch and follow. I have recommended the videos to my friends and all agree...Well done.
Ezio Fusco I find it hard to watch other DIY videos because his are so good the others just seem awful.
You have a problem with strong accents? XD rofl
Says the guy with the foreign name. Careful not to sound like too much of a bigot.

I can't be there only person the says to themselves "hey guys, chris fix here.." as the video loads.
stcrussman I too!!! we'll wait for the T-shirt
Me too. It's got a poetic ring to it and with the specific inflection. A true work of art.
lol i say soapy wooder in addition to that! haha :D
A really good practice that not a lot of people follow, would be performing some routine preventative maintenance to your brakes at each oil change/tire rotation. When I change my oil I also rotate my tires, as well as open up each brake caliper to clean any rust that’s built up anywhere, clean the hub, and apply all fresh grease. No matter how resistant and durable grease is, it’s not durable enough to last the entire duration of the life of the brake pads, which is what can lead to premature wear caused by pads not releasing when they should. A little routine preventive maintenance saves a lot of money and maximizes the life you’ll get out of your brakes
I dunno, I just replaced my brakes at 90k miles and the caliper pens seemed to still be moving pretty much just as free before I cleaned and re-applied grease. Not saying a little preventative isn't a good idea, but EVERY tire rotation pulling the brakes apart seems a bit excessive.
Also to my great surprise the fluid still looked pretty much the same as new when I started to flush (also the first time in 90k, unless the dealer did it for free without telling me *snort), so maybe Mazda just makes some really kickass brake systems.
@@sultanofsick Mazda does make good products. It might be overkill for me to be greasing them up every 7500 miles or so, but I only started doing that after a couple back to back sets of prematurely worn pads, and a set of warped rotors. If I was paying a mechanic $89.95 per hour to service my brakes, then absolutely no way I would service them that frequently. But doing it on my own which only cost me an hour of my free time and the cost of grease, hell yeah it’s worth it for the peace of mind. I personally just try not to cheap out, take shortcuts, or skimp out on brakes, wheels and tires. Flirting with death at that point in my humble opinion
@@theodoreclay2213 You're way better than me, no way I could do it in an hour. Took me about 8 doing brakes and rotors as a first timer. Happy I did it and saved a boatload of money, but wouldn't do it again just for fun :D
@@sultanofsick lol at least you rolled up your sleeves and did it. Invest in a good jack, a $50 battery impact gun on Amazon, and set out all your tools ahead of time like Chris does in these videos, and it’ll go faster and faster each time. Having all the right tools for the job and of course not having to fight with seized up bolts and rusted rotors will speed it up as well. Some cars are designed well and the brake work goes fast, others are designed like crap and it makes everything a fight to perform any work. I did a brake job for a friend, and what was supposed to just be a brake flush ended up turning into a trip to auto zone at 7pm before they closed to get a caliper due to the bleeder screw being cross threaded from the last idiot to work on it. Once that valve is stripped out like that, your caliper is toast. No way to know it was cross threaded and just jammed up on it until you loosen it and see that it won’t retighten. The profanity coming out of my mouth was on point at that moment
that broken down brake disc disturbs me...wtf
Florinel787 same I can't believe someone could be that oblivious
+Shane Blandford-Scherr I've changed probably 3 or 4 like that. In one case the guy was trying to save money. He pushed it, and pushed it. Eventually, the rotor wore down as you see it, and the backing plate wore down so much it was able to exit the caliper bracket through the gap between it and the rotor. The caliper piston then contacted the exposed cooling vanes of the rotor. The piston got so hot and mangled from that, it melted the dust boot and square cut seal. He tried to save money on a simple pad and rotor brake job, and ended up paying for pads, rotors, 2 front calipers, and a brake fluid exchange. Some people's kids man...
it's frightening how oblivious a lot of people are to this kind of thing, and the potential consequences of it.
I actually had that happen to me in my dad's expedition. we ignored it for awhile and then while driving down my road I just heard a bunch of metal peices break off and rattle around the wheels. the disc only had one side when we took it out.
Florinel787 happened to my friend, whole thing exploded on him wail driving.
Dad my stomachs hurts. Good ole soapy wooder will take care of it son.
I've been using it for years. Fast relief formula. Not to mention bubbles shoot out of my ass when I fart.
Good stuff.

Mechanic and vlogging skills 200% great job! I will inspect my 2015 ecosport. Thank you sir!
My dad has been complaining the brakes on his truck make noise similar to this since he took it to the shop.
Time to follow these steps and see if we can fix the problem.
You rock Chris.
Update
Dude, from my point of view, u ought to get some kind of a Nobel Prize on Mechanical Engineering. Very good video
I don’t have a DAD to teach me things, so now I’ll be coming to this channel to learn new things that my dad should have taught me 💔🥺👌🏻
Glad you’re learning a lot from the videos,!

Not all dads are mechanically inclined.
ASTRONAUTKIDD why should dads be teaching you how to fix things they probably know nothing about?
chris, that's why i'm a long time subscriber, you just cover about anything, from brakes to cleaning advices. You are the man. I'm a happy subscriber and watch every video you make. thanks for the hard work. i loved ur mustang drifting btw, hope you will get a pro at it.
New car owner.....this video was concise and easy to watch....even if I cannot fix my brakes myself, I appreciate this video and I learned alot...Now when I go to the mechanic I am not completely lost when it comes to squeaky brakes and possible causes :)
You legit uploaded this the same day I noticed I need new brake pads
My ChrisFix senses were tingling!
yeah its kinda creepy like you spying on us
do you record your audio "on the fly", while recording the footage or is it dubbed afterwards ? you have such a steady flow in your speech with no "uhms", no coughing, no being "out of breath", no smacking.. only to the point well verbalized sentences. beside all the great knowledge you churn out, i think i admire that the most.
It's dubbed. When you watch some of the older ones, you can hear wind and various things. More the better, dubbing works well for him
Chris, THANK YOU for your detailed, yet concise videos; they are always full of practical information! The headlight restoration video was another amazing and helpful video. I confess that I now check your videos first for repairs even before a web search! You are much appreciated; keep up the great work! ✌🏽
Your videos are so in depth and helpful.
4819385 Agreed. Very informative
You saved my day at 10:02. I got new brakes and calipers at a workshop and it seems as if the mechanics hadn't clean the rust underneath the pad. It is sad cause I paid big money for the repair since there were major things to fix but they paid no attention to such details (didn't even bother to screw the swingarms tightly). I suppose I will be doing things by myself now with good advice such as in the video above.
Glad the videos are helpful! You can totally do the job yourself with better quality and better parts!
Mighty Boy there fucking pos humans who only care bout ur money
Brakes are one of the easiest things to do. I just put new rotors and pads on all 4 corners of my GTO yesterday, took me about 3 hours and all it cost was parts.
Everytime I watch ChrisFix videos I have to wash or repair my cair although it's already clean and everything is working fine.
+Philip “ShaRk.” Danzinger haha
^thank god im not the only one...his videos make me want to work on stuff lol
yep same here. I'm gonna fix my scooter right now.
A comprehensive explanation of why brakes squeak brilliant.
For drum brakes, noise can be cause due to hardware rubbing the drum. I had this issue with a 97 ranger. The auto adjuster was rubbing against the drum because it was improperly installed. I quickly fixed it and the brakes, hardware and drum were all perfect to use after turning the drum
Thanks for the tip!
A bad wheel bearing can also sound like drum brakes grinding. Had that happen last year on one of my cars.
My noise was from when I applied anti-squeak to the pads and reassembled everything I got some grease on the rotor which made the rotor super shiny and smooth causing a crunching chatter when applying the brakes at a slow speed. To fix- clean the rotor and pads with dish soap and sandpaper them a little.
Chris I watch a lot of these RUclips videos and learn a lot but I have to say all your videos that you made are simply the best ones available. Keep up the great work Chris!
Awesome that you mentioned about cleaning a new rotor or drum. VERY few people ever brake kleen the new drums/rotors! Awesome tip!!!
It definitely has to be mentioned whenever installing new brake parts! Thanks!
You just deserve millions of likes. Great explanation about brakes.
Another source of squeaks especially on mtn bike disc brakes is the pad type. Downhill mtn bike pads squeak until they're warmed up and then they're great. Other pads won't squeak, but will even boil silicone DOT5 brake fluid causing brake fade when they're hot doing downhill.
Thanks for the tip Brian!
Dot5 has the highest boiling point, both wet and dry, compared any other DOT certified fluid though. Around 500F dry and 360F wet.
Mineral OIl will not fade on you though. Build a 'cool can' for your downtube, removes that problem in a heartbeat.
Don't know much about mountain bikes but I do know breaks Do they make a break caliper with ceramic pistons in them? Some car brands use ceramic pistons to keep fluid temp low. Break fade happens when the surface of the pad is the same as the rotor. Reason they make slotted rotors to help cool. If you are doing a lot of downhill and you still get break fade and own a Dremel tool get creative and groove your pads then see what happens. Remember you are thinking about trying to fet surface temp down but not losing friction area also. Good Luck !
@@foreigncareater honestly not a bad idea! Remember to use a mask to make sure it won't give u covid
Amazing job there. Enjoy watching your videos and and easy to understand, and love that you move the video along and not that you sit there for three hours explaining the same thing.
Thanks a lot
2:52: thanks I WAS TO 3 SERVICES NOBODY KNOW HOW TO HELP ME WITH BRAKE NOISE..FIX IT MYSELF WITH YOUR HELP ..THANK YOYU
Turns out some of the brake hardware I had ordered on amazon was defective causing a little metal clip dig into the rotor. Don’t cheap out on brakes is what I learned
Or be careful about installing them correctly...
Yes, I've had to grind down some aftermarket brake hardware that was too wide.
this is some good stuff. I need to do my brakes soon. same with the wife's car. I'll do them myself
broooo....what a video! Amazing even watching this 6 years later. Thanks a lot! Keep doing your great work Chris.
This is my first time in this channel and I'm surprised by how elaborated this guy make his videos !! 😱 and how many cars He got...around 5 in this video !! 😅👍🏼Excellent work !!
Chris, never use copper paste on any brake parts. It acts as an electrolyte and makes the brake parts corrode like the slide pins because you are mixing metals. Allways use a ceramic paste when working on brakes.
+uberdude - uh oh, now i don't know which i should use.
JustMe I attended a brake presentation from bosch a few days ago and they said never to use metal based lubricants because of the high risk corrosion, some mixes of metal produced 2 volts when tested. I only use ceramic based lubricants
TheUberdude14 high temp grease can also work. Just don't get any on the rotor or pads.
TheUberdude14 with the amount of anti Swiss he used Idk if that wheel will ever come off cuz that wheel will be welded on there. I've had mixed metal weld together on valve stems. Had to dermal them off.
Thanks for the info.
Such an educator. Short, simple and straight to the point
such a detailed video, thank you chris :)
2:36 the wear indicator on my Versa was bent and wasn't making any noise, when it should have... Good luck with that knowledge!
Probably had it on backwards. Ask me how I know lmao.
i'm 12 and I got my first project car because of you chrisfix I look foward to your videos you are my favorite youtuber.
do the flintstones use copper anti seize on their feet?
That is how it all started!!
Why does youtube keep deleting my comments?!! I made a clever statement about the Flinstones being future humans with augmented feet and michelin foot sole treads. >:(
I like to lubricate my brakes with spit and elbow grease :) and if I hear any squeaking noise from the brakes I first rejoice that I got my hearing back and then shoot the brakes :)

August 10th 2023 you are absolutely awesome you explain this squeaky noise brake problem very very well thank you so much
Soapy Wooder
Lost it
+MrDoctorDIV lol
This and your other brake videos gave me the confidence to go looking, and I found another reason for brake noise. My parking brake wouldn't release on one side. The wire on the caliper end moved as expected, but I think the springs that are supposed to pull what I think is a cam back on release just weren't doing it. So, uh, that's where I'm at.
Alright, alright last one I'm really going to bed now.
sureeeee, just one more ;)
Anti seize is not resiste to heat none sense on hot brake parts
David Mcmillian You could use Permatex Aluminum Anti-Sieze which is resistant to temperatures up to 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit.
Soapy Wooder! Haha! Why? Bekoss.
Exactly!
I've watched a lot of your videos.. The way you explain every nut and bolt.. The does and don'ts.. You make it so easy, so people can understand you.. Have you considered teaching this at a university.. I think you would be so great at it.. I've learnt so much from your videos.. I can't thank you enough.. Keep up the excellent work... Cheers from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia..
Very educational lesson great job.
Glad the video was helpful!
Mazda stealership wanted $1,170 to replace the rear rotors, pads and one caliper. I went home and replaced the front and rear pads and rotors for less than $380. The rear driver side caliper wasn't the issue. The problem was metal inserts the pads slide on were fouled up so the pads didn't slide freely.
you forgot to add mechanic fee, company profits, and also warranty. you don't expect all those for free, do you?
@@TheAngusGao I expect an accurate and honest diagnosis when I take my vehicle to a dealership. Being lied to and being told the caliper is faulty is not what I expect. I was also illustrating how much stealership gouge you on repairs. Maybe if they read their own TSBs they would know what to inspect.
Wow you've shown me so many ways I've gone wrong in my past brake jobs..,thanks man new subscriber :)
Why the hell would you want to stop your brakes squeaking? I enjoy finding the sweet spot when rolling up to lights for maximum squeak and even try to get a tune using varied pressure.
Well.. if it's squeaking because it's worn out...
Thought I was the only one in the world that did this lol
Yeah, if piggy 'aint squealing she 'aint enjoying it!
You missed it on the graphite explanation, Chris. The pencil lead is graphite mixed with clay and fired in a kiln to make it hard. The more clay, the harder it is. The pure graphite used in never seize and other lubricants is a sooty, soft material, and feels much like grease if rubbed between your fingers. By the way, the person who invented the modern pencil lead was Henry Bessemer. He used the profits to invert the Bessemer Convertor, a process that changed steel making forever.
I really appreciate that he even used a brake rotor as a wheel chalk 😂😂
Thank you, I’ve change my breaks with my friend and now I’m going to do it alone
*Brakes...different from breaks. Just a friendly F.Y.I.

the reason copper anti-seize is better is because the griphine stuff isn't heat resistant.
Graphite is more heat resistant than copper... Graphite is a form of carbon which is the same stuff they make the heat shields out of for space ships.
ChrisFix huh, guess my level 1 instructor lied to me. Great videos though 👍
+Oliver Rantanen they also use it for crucibles when melting down metals
Graphite is used in Atomic Reactors to cool them down ;)
MKLele Can confirm. Dad works as a nuclear reactor mechanic. and I'm studying to be one
This is the best video on this subject. Clear and concise information. Excellent video
Nice video! I'm a recent subscriber and you have taught me alot man! Thanks!!!
Awesome Richard! I am glad you are learning a lot!
Excellent detailed explanation in all your videos. Great job, well done, you're a master teacher.
Chris: first off, thank you so much for your videos. They've allowed me to do more work on my car than I thought possible, and helped me realize just how much can be done on my car by myself. It's becoming a hobby of mine to keep it in shape and clean (2003 Chevy Malibu with almost 278k miles.)
Second: I just fixed some brake noise that I can remember if it was covered in this video or not: my brake hardware needed a little bending to be clear of the rotors (it was rubbing against the brake pad hardware which mounts in the caliper bracket.) Bonus points: I fought with a pair of sticky caliper pins for a half hour and now they function properly, and my steering wheel doesn't shake when I go over 50mph.
Keep up the awesome videos! You've got +1 story now to encourage you to keep going. :)
Dude you are the fucking master of the universe!
Jesus Christ, dude you just explained that better then any public school teacher could
What public school teaches how to fix brake squeak lol?
@@Techaro It was a joke! However shop class was an open high school course in many of the schools in my area in Canada including the one i attended back in 2014
Really terrific teaching video! Things you show here are memorable -- even years after first viewing. Example: You vividly demonstrate what a warped rotor's irregular contact with pads will both look and sound like! (not so much a "squeak" -- as an rhythmic rubbing sound) Have this exact problem now with an older Saturn -- and your video here is the only one I ever saw that both explained and demonstrated just what the problem is. Thank you Chris.
People always forget this tip: put a thin coat of anti seize on the rotor! You don't want your brakes to seize up, right?
can i use WD40 in place of the brake cleaner to remove the new oil on the rotor?
I almost forgot!
In case this wasn't irony. Do never do that, always use brake cleaner!
Chris, one comment I think that’s highly critical to add to these videos is the recommendation to wear a mask whenever working on brakes. The brake dust and brake material can be highly toxic to inhale. Otherwise, great video! Thank you!!
mine does the opposite mine makes a noise only when i release the break and it makes its own noise till i apply the breaks again
Maybe is a bad wheel bearing be careful
Wow, this might be the most useful youtube video I've ever watched! Nice work!!!!
Man! I love drum brakes they’re so good and maintenance free
i cant tell
do u narrate while recording or do u narrate afterwards?
900bz most likely during. unless he is really good at syncing his voice
900bz it's too clear for live commentary, particularly outside, and you don't hear changes in his voice from the time lost between cuts, but it's very well timed to the action, which makes me think he records live commentary for the timing and then redubs over it.
It sound like most of the time he narrates afterwards while is he editing and just syncs it up. Its pretty easy to tell when he is narrating while he is recording or narrating while he is editing.
I talk while I film except for parts I know I am going to speed up like sanding or wrenching. In that case, I talk to the camera first and then film and use editing software to move the audio around to make it clear and concise. I spend a ton of time on audio so I dont waste your time when you watch the video. I take out long pauses, breaths, etc.
Great tip to sand the inner and outer rust ridge
I'm just speechless
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!

yeah lube up your "break pin" and stuff it in her "dust sleeve" that should shut her up.
It depends how you do it...
Unless you put the brakes on her first, you wont know what the problem really is.
She might be a little rusty.
Just use some silicone base lubricant to make your pin go in and out easily.
