Wood furniture just looks so much nicer than all steel or modern polymers. Yes it's usually heavier and can be more expensive but for style it's unmatched
The funny thing is that that stock would be great for modern French police, who really seem to love those giant ballistic face shields you always see them wearing when in full kit.
Really fascinating to see the evolution of French submachine gun designs and how they drew influence from other iconic firearms like the Sten and M3 Grease Gun. Thank you for another informative content
Honestly think more prototypes should be like that. Helps with sales and getting funding for a project when you have something straight off the bat that works well and looks almost like the finished product.
Looks like the stock design was a bit of an afterthought. They did the pistol grip first, and then went oh crap, we need a stock as well, let's just screw it on top.
Ngl, this one looks like something you'd see in Metro series or in one of other games that allows to upgrade the guns. There is that feeling as if the parts aren't exactly meant to fit together and were cobbled in ramshackle manner.
They look like they're ready for action, not expiermental. Sure the dust cover issue certainly is a problem but as a whole there was potential. Not bad for post occupation France.
If we got to see the MAC48LS - a prototype MAT49, then that tells me we're getting closer and closer to seeing the prototype Uzi Pro (the Micro Uzi that accepts what appears to be Glock mags)! I can sense it somewhere around the bend!
More I see videos on french guns more I just wonder wxf happened that the country is gone from a very prolific, early adopter and inovator to a full void with almost no production of small arm. Nowadays we ned to kiss some german or american rear ends to even get some military rifles/carabines and handguns or even amunition. Damn politicians
It's so odd that they didn't make a simply modification to the dust cover design that would allow it to open when the gun was fired. A spring and hinge could have made it pop open outward (ala AR15) when the gun was fired. Or could have rotated out of the way either automatically OR been used as a safety to block the bolt closing. Any number of things to fix that problem would have worked.
@@defenderoftheadverb It's a problem if the soldier cocks it, then slides the cover back over the port, the tries to fire it. Sometimes things like not following the exact manual of arms happens when being shot at by someone else.
lol poor france... "we have le new gun de le machine!" Mr McCollum if you are ever in Kenya. See if the govt can let you rate our domestic M4 clones. I've seen them around and am very curious. I wonder if the machining is that exact as to keep up with the demands of a AR type carbine🤔
It would be interesting to trace the development of the understanding of "combat marksmanship" as it relates to the evolution of SMGs. The design parameters in most of them seem to be "As cheap as possible." Most are ergonomic cripples and seem solely intended to spray unaimed bullets, usually at some unrealistically long range. There seems to be little to any input from end users beyond high level reliability testing. That they had a valid tactical role in close combat is clear, but the execution was always so clumsy as to cloud the value, and the military marksmanship doctrine so schizo(precision at 1000 yards with the rifle, spray the SMG at the trench and use it to sort of peck out slow singles everywhere else) when, IMO, the real need was very rapid semi-auto AIMED fire at all realistic combat ranges-like well under 150 yards.
The LS with that top cover held on only by tension could have turned out to be very problematic in the field, a slight knock in the wrong place and that’s your recoil spring sliding out the back of the gun.
Funny how they could have simply made the dustcover go back with the bolt instead of the charging handle yet chose not to. Im sure a little spring catch in there could have it close on an open bolt and simply open with first shot respectively open when handle was pulled. As a rule theese designs arent that interesting mechanically, but ergonomics and configurations still do catch my eye. I do at times wonder like say the wooden stock model they got there.. Was ergonomics invented some time in the 90´s?? Theres no real reason you couldnt have (this is ansolutely an IE and not a choice of best gun ever) a P90 styled grip/handeling design but with a straight mag under it folding up. Infact over the shown wooden stock version, virtually every wooden stock SMG of the time (tommygun, mp41, PPSH etc) are way more ergonomic, but ok not french.
4:34 They could have went with an angled pistol grip. Then shaped the stock to where it looks traditional. Kind of like a Thordsen Stock. Except not as weird looking.
As Im watching this I wonder is there any belligerent nation of ww2 that france didnt fight ? The US in Africa The Russians on the Eastern Front The Italians The British bombed their fleet in port.
That collapsible stock looks similar to the tec 9 to me. Not exactly, but the short barrel, and the vented shroud. I call it like I see it. If you disagree, I have no problem with that whatsoever. I do not care to fight about it, this is my opinion. Viva la diferencia!
Well... they were. France at the time had to build up an army for the cold war and fight in Indochina and soon Algeria. Mp40 alone would not have been enough.
They took the time to file in a precision notch on the front sight... and then mounted the rear sight to a bent piece of sheet metal held on by tension. At least it's just the prototype.
"Hey babe! The new star wars blasters just dropped!"
Especially the LS variant, with the magazine folded up.
@@LD-Orbs yeah thats like an alternate E-11 design right there
It's always fun when you see a gun that doesn't even really need to be modified to fit into Star Wars.
Isn't it "wake up, babe"?
As goofy as the fixed stock looks, you can't not love walnut and steel
The argentine Halcón 1943 model is like a super deluxe version of that goofy configuration
Wood furniture just looks so much nicer than all steel or modern polymers. Yes it's usually heavier and can be more expensive but for style it's unmatched
That’s what she said!

You almost had me until the video started and said they were French.

Influence no, copy yes.
@@wrxs1781 What do you believe they copied ?
It actually look damn good, for a prototype
that stock, while impractical, looks lush

Like scifi looking guns

The LS would have made a great Blaster in Star Wars, esp. with the mag folded to the front.
I agree completely. Good comment! :🤖
Presumably electricity and plasma substrate could feed just fine in the horizontal position.
So you can fry poor Greedo ?😂
my first thought as well.
Exactly what I thought as well. I could also totally see the 48 as something akin to Boba Fett's blaster in Empire.
Oh wow, the Alpha and Beta version of the MAT49
Ngl, this one looks like something you'd see in Metro series or in one of other games that allows to upgrade the guns. There is that feeling as if the parts aren't exactly meant to fit together and were cobbled in ramshackle manner.
It's interesting to see the progression from MAS 38 to MAC 48 to MAT 49. Those Frenchies certainly have a way with guns.
They look like they're ready for action, not expiermental. Sure the dust cover issue certainly is a problem but as a whole there was potential. Not bad for post occupation France.
i'm a simple man , i see French weapons , i press the like button
Ian agrees! 🇫🇷
You just know filming videos on rare French SMGs is heaven for Ian.
Leave it to the French to make post-war firearms that look like they came out of Star Wars.
Have you seen their FAL?
The French sure did make a lot of Good guns

I was getting grease gun vibes when I saw that wire stock.
'Sten inspired parts'
*uncomfortable face*
Some of the design elements kinda reminds me of Erma MP-56 & MP-58.
nothing gets my welcome like a forgotten weapons video on an old french weapon no one knows about
Bagette Space Magic
the stock would be perfect on a paintball gun - you can get your masked face behind the weapon for aiming
i love how all these security forces, gun companies and museums see these odd guns and are like "we should call that jesus fella to talk of these"
The first one reminds me of the rare Spanish Republic Civil War Laborda-Fontbernat SMG, which I hope to see in this channel one day.

It fires from an open bolt so the bolt has to be cocked open before firing and that opens the dust cover. IOW it's not a problem.

Is a precision sight really any use on an SMG?

That thing is very aesthetically cool!

That stock design looks like it was made specifically with hip-firing in mind, rather than aimed fire from the shoulder.

I don't know why but when I 1st saw the cover photo I thought that the one was some old version of a tippmann 98 custom paintball marker 😅

The Mac 48 looks lot like a Crossman pellet pistol with the carbine stock accessory.

Can you do a video on the Canadian c7 variants of the American m16
Have you made a review of the Glock 46?
Why not just issue the hundreds of thousands of MP40s the allies must have captured? They were fine SMGs.
Well... they were. France at the time had to build up an army for the cold war and fight in Indochina and soon Algeria. Mp40 alone would not have been enough.
These guns are still in everyday use here in Madagascar.

They could have solved the problem with the dust cover, and probably made the weapon even cheaper by using a reciprocating cocking handle.
The fixed stock gun looks like something from Speed Racer.

couldn't a pressure fitted part right at the impacty bit of the gun just rattle loose? for the 2nd prototype
