    i think “the same” is less about like Kumbaya we need to come together, more just an overwhelming feeling of anxiety, pleading for humanity to stop tearing itself apart. Thom and the gang definitely don’t subscribe to the whole coldplay-esque ignorant unity type thing, they’re really condemnatory of the people who are actually doing the fucked up shit in the world. I think that’s why the same is followed immediately by the opposite, kinda examining that we all are human but also some people are the fucking worst

    Definitely missing the point of the same. Thom’s pleas aren’t meant to be taken at face value, instead they are to be contrasted with the horrific and intense rising instrumentation that is meant to drown him out. This quite clearly shows that these ‘centrist’ pleas of trying to bring people together are useless.

    • @ThorMNs
      @ThorMNs 2 года назад +63

      It's more of a desperation than saying it's useless. Thom isn't being cynical on the track, he's showing how his hope and hopelessness intertwine

      Thom is being serious here

    • @memetherapy
      @memetherapy 2 года назад +11

      @@TAJMofficial Realizing we are all the same is now considered naive and worth demonizing for many political extremists. Thom is speaking about this very dark side of human nature and pleading. It's kind of revealing and ironic how people want to make Thom cynical and "on their side".

    • @Torthrodhel
      @Torthrodhel 2 года назад +1

      @@memetherapy while it's a sentiment with some merit I'd still call it oversimplistic. There are definitely differences to be acknowledged, even if not in as many places as a frenzied race to the excesses might suggest. If you ask me do I comprehend why someone disagrees with me on whether or not a song is enjoyable, then yeah I'm a flawed human with an opinion looking at another flawed human with an opinion. But if you ask me do I comprehend why someone disagrees with me on whether or not masses of people should be left to die to stop the bank accounts of the rich being reduced by an amount they'd hardly even notice, then I am quite happy to be considered an 'extremist', on that topic I do not take that word to be an insult, and no, I am not the same as the opposing person. These things it's being applied to are unequal, and ignoring that is the basic flaw of centrism. You might extract the idea of an 'extremist centrist' from such trains of thought, actually. A muddling idea that wants a different word for it but you get what I mean I'm sure.

  • @rosecoloredshades508

    Actually love this album, dude, keep listening to it. There is actually a narrative throughline: pleas for change, a vision of the future, a fire starting then spreading, floodgates opening, trying to survive in the aftermath, then letting go and allowing oneself to sink below the surface of a broken, flooded world/existence. All set to some really intricate, realized music with a variety of tones and colors. It's my favorite Radiohead adjacent record and possibly even my favorite Yorke/Greenwood thing since Kid A.

    • @rosecoloredshades508
      @rosecoloredshades508 2 года назад +9

      What's great about the lyrics is how the "we're all the same" mantra is offset by the ominous music build. And Yorke's "PLEASE" sounds fraught.

    • @StyxTBuferd
      @StyxTBuferd 2 года назад +8

      @@rosecoloredshades508 Yeah I honestly think it's meant to capture the anxiety of the loss of political normality- even if the fighting is necessary, and I would argue it is inevitable in the direction we're heading, it's not exactly something to be happy about. That's what keeps Radiohead songs from being preachy- they capture the emotional reaction to the devastation, not the prescription.

    I love Free In the Knowledge. While it’s far less boundary-pushing than the songs that ultimately made Radiohead the GOAT, it’s also the ultimate proof that Thom can still write impactful anthems like he did on The Bends. It nostalgically reminds me of Fake Plastic Trees, the song that got me into Radiohead in 9th grade.
    I love this whole album because it shows Thom and Jonny’s versatility: they can be experimental AND accessible and can sound great in either mode. It feels like all eras of Radiohead put onto one disc, while still offering something new.

    Hey Brad, im really happy you are doing a reaction for this album :) But I wouldn't call it a "new Thom Yorke project", its a side-project from "Johnny greenwood"(Radiohead's guitarist) , "Thom Yorke" (Radiohead vocalist) and Tom Skinner (Drummer from Sons of Komet). I think they all are equally important to "The Smile", just saying.

    I find this album to be grower, like most Radiohead projects. The time signatures are off-kilter so the grooves can be difficult to get into at first which might make it even tougher. The drumming ends up taking a lot of the interesting space worth paying attention to. Phil Selway, on the other hand, tends to be more of a backbone for others to create over. I don't love it as much as most Radiohead albums, but it's probably the best Radiohead side project, just above The Eraser.

    I've decided that the lyrics in The Same are written from the prospective of the people in power Thom believes are actively tearing people apart. It's not an honest plea from Thom's personal perspective. While I've made that decision as a necessity - I otherwise wouldn't be able to listen to it - there are also some lines to support that. When addressing the "people," he calls them "people in the streets." They're not just some random mass of people, they're already disillusioned. This is a desperate plea from some person in power to regain control, sharing empty platitudes, but, as the music suggests, is very quickly loosing more and more control the more they talk.

    Okay, on my first listen I can say is a good one but after a realization about the apparent (at least to me) musical narrative of this album, after writing this first impression, I'm going to listen to it once more. (I'm listening again as I was in the middle of writing this. So, first and second impressions mashed together)
    I thought I kinda agreed with the idea that there wasn't any particular common ground between the songs but I differ from this now. The album is presenting and telling something, at least as I said, musically. I don't really care about the full context of whatever the lyrics mean because I think you can see a more expansive picture just catching some of the lyrics (because you can always understand some of the words without reading the lyrics) and relating them with what emotions the composition is evoking within the song. But apart from that, its obvious to me that the songs have emotions that appear to be congruent with one another.
    The Same starts with this shallow hopefulness, like someone not facing something that is happening, that also seems to be crumbling apart as the song goes on with this constant tension. This is followed up by The Opposite, that appears to be a realization, giving this feeling of something moving on, perhaps the person in the last song realizing how futile that hope (pretending it wasn't happening) was, and starts to leave it behind. You Will Never Work In Television Again sounds like a direct attack against this thing that was being denied that was there in the first song, that seems to evolve into an attempt to comprehend what was being attacked. I say this because of the more mysterious sound that Pana-Vision gives, like someone wondering confused as it wasn't easy to be done as it was thought. The Smoke shares an aura similar to The Opposite, like a path to something new being painted through the music, but this time it is not followed up by a burst of energy like last time, its followed by Speech Bubbles. Speech Bubbles sounds more like a solemn acceptance, like there's nothing else to do but let it through, but there's this strings in this song playing a melody that sounds really uneasy (like this acceptation is forced and it doesn't want to be). Then Thin Thing happen and gives this atmosphere of panic, like this person is going at 200mph in their head at the same time it starts to run away. Open the Floodgates receives the person in the last song with a huge wall (the floodgate?) and returning to the same place as in Speech Bubbles, accepting. So the Floodgates are opened, letting all in. It doesn't sound like escaping from it or going against it, it sounds like letting the huge wave hit you while standing still. Free In the Knowledge is the person floating stranded in this ocean that it is what was being ignored or attacked in the last 7 songs. It seems more hopeful as it implies this acceptance (for real this time) is going to let the person go to new places. A Hairdryer seems a logical follow-up, even the name (the person founds a shore (a new way to continue their life) and leaves the ocean (knowledge) and the hair dries as the wind blows). It sounds like someone walking into the unknown, it seems rough but the curiosity to get through it is more, and being amazed with what was there (the line " look at all the pretty lights " sounds like someone being dumbfounded at something new that it was never perceived).And then the drone at the end (I LOVE IT) that makes you zone out as the person in all this songs is now, getting lost on all this new things but in a comforting way. In all this narrative that I designed myself, Waving a White Flag sounds like images of the past. The person even now in this new place, feels scared about some things still (the lines " out of sight, out of mind " sound like a reminder of the actions taken on the first song. Maybe fearing that those same mistakes will be done in this new chapter?). The phantoms still torment but in a more optimistic note, after some reassuring chords at the end of this song, we go on to We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings. It's really high energy in the same fashion as the 3rd song but this time it comes with confidence. The unknown of the future is accepted and it serves to get through the shadows that were bothering the person in the last song, finally letting go through all this for once. Skrting On the Surface being such a peaceful ending to the album, just can tell you that whoever was the one that were in the first song, it is no more. This person doesn't fear the world that sits right in front of their eyes and it's pleased with experiencing it.
    Now... Any of this is what the album is about?? Of course not lol But to me music is about this, something that makes your imagination go places. I wouldn't say this album is phenomenal but it is really great and to be fair, it made me wrote all this BS lmao.
    This album as a whole is a +8/10.

    If you can find the very first live release film for Glastonbury it comes off so much better and watching Jonny rip into his guitar and trade bass and snyth off between him and Thom is a totally different vibe.

      I noticed that "old"songs (i mean from Glastonbury) mostly didn't affect me, but in the album i really like most of it. The "new" songs (january 2022) i like it immediately but in the album, in my opinion, they seems not finished.

    I have to disagree with a lot of your opinions about this project Brad, I definitely think it isn’t the best work Thom and Jonny have put out, but I get the sense that they’re not really trying to push boundaries in the same way and are enjoying themselves, something I think can be heard through the songs and something that makes the album feel very warm to me. I think that it is not only a grower but an album that is probably best listened to alone with a pair of good headphones. I don’t think I would’ve enjoyed this either if I’d just been pissed off by listening to the chainsmokers lol

    His takes were mind numbing. Considering the amount of time a Radiohead album usually needs to fully bloom and sink in for the listener, for him to sigh and say a track is boring 15 seconds in is laughably impulsive. And the irony that he has a future version from what, an hour later to let us know how his thinking has evolved after a second listen? I'm literally still discovering new wrinkles in songs from 20 years ago but he thinks he's figured the whole thing out this quickly? This is not an interesting way to review music. He basically finds tracks boring and moans that they aren't as good as Kid A if they don't immediately blow his mind. That's his whole process... It's not a perfect album and he's allowed to dislike it but the impulsive dismissal and lack of patience with music made by real artists who pour everything into their craft is disrespectful. Maybe it's pompous but Radiohead deserve more than a tossed-off and casual dismissal after a few listens.

    When in May Thom announced "The Smile" i've got confused, asking "when new radiohead album?" and i wasn't happy with most of the songs. But in January, when they show some new songs, i was interested. However, 6 singles were too much.
    Finally, since May 13 during 2-3 weeks i listened this album almost every day. Most of the songs is really beautiful, diverse, even boring songs aren't bad and i try to give a second chance such types of songs. And it paid off, now i like 10/13 songs. By using one site for scoring each songs, i've got - 7.9/10 and i think it's a decent result and of the best release in the year. My favourites: The Same, The Opposite, Speech Bubbles, Free in Knowledge, A Hairdryer, Waving White Flag, Skrting on the Surface.|
    And i disagree with most of your scores, about lyrics, Hairdryer and so one. I think, you should give this album second chance.

    The lyrics for "The Same" was actually written to be the side of the "corporations". Like, they saying that they are the same as us, who are fighting for our rights and for a better future (in us I mean people who actually fight for those things). So, that's not Kumbaya shit, just rich people trying to buy people with that kind of speech.
