- The Smile are an English rock band comprising Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood with Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner. They are produced by Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's longtime producer. I wasn't disappointed! Or was I? Watch to find out :)

Thin Thing is a breath of fresh air. So nice to hear Jonny freak out on guitar again. It's like a more demented version of Identikit.
The album sounds so unique and fresh, I’m loving every single song
Saw one of early early live shows, absolutely stunning and just as good as studio. Phil and Clive (the other drummer) were in the crowd, too, was amazing seeing them jamming along!
A Hairdryer is like a more organic The King Of Limbs track. Probably my favorite
Agreed!
If TKOL was organic like A Hairdryer it would easily be my favorite Radiohead album
To quote Blue Jay Way: Please don't be looong
...with part 2. The song Free In The Knowledge is something else.
And Thin Thing. And Skrting.
kudos reference Seb
10/10
The outro to Speech Bubbles is painfully beautiful.
This album has absolutely blown me away. My favorites are Open the Floodgates and Free in the Knowledge, excited for you to get to them.
Those are my two favorites too!
Didn't expect to see BionicleSaurus here
free in the knowledge and speech bubbles are my favorites
@@sgt.purp1e You better bet I'm around where ever there's Radiohead or Thom Yorke lol
@@BionicleSaurus RUclipsr I know from my childhood likes Radiohead & Thom. What a time to be alive
THANK YOU for reacting!! Cant wait for your reaction to part 2!!
Man, can't wait for part 2. Speech Bubbles is my favorite. Be sure to listen to the first ones again when you start where you left off.
Speech bubbles is beautiful indeed
@@estebanvalle715 he really disliked videotape so I dont think he will enjoy or appreciate speech bubbles. The Subtleties in both videotape and speech bubbles take a while to get used to so he might not like it but he might appreciate the care and musicality that was put into it.
Glad you loved Pana-Vision! That one is definitely my favourite on this first half. Second half has a lot more of the moodier/mellower tracks, I'm interested to see what you think!
It’s interesting you mention the art show stuff because the 4th song (pana-vision) appears in the series finale of Peaky Blinders. Good stuff!
YES so glad you are hearing this. I honestly think it just keeps getting better
Believe it or not , the second half of the album is even better. I've been a huge Radiohead fan for way over 25 years and this album is up there with some of the best. This project has more than surpassed my expectations and I can not put this album down. Speech Bubbles, Free in the knowledge, Waving a white flag , We don't know what tomorrow brings , Skrting on the surface. Prepare to be wowed.
I don't care what anyone says. This is LP10
It definitely feels like it lol
Wait until lp10 actually comes out and its like nothing we ve imagined
Found and love your SMILE reactions here. -I hope you do the new album Wall of Eyes.
I really enjoyed this. 💙👍
Thom and Jonny are on such a beyond the ultimate musical genius scale to be just like " a couple guys in a rock band" - despite which band we are talking abut - they have officially transcended - and add this badass jazz drummer and pent up COVID song ideas and - well here ya go. I anything to me this ensures LP10 even more as this was just them being bored like what else do we have to do let's trade off guitar, bass, and synth bring in a new drum vibe and make total magic because we can. The live surprise show that surfaced first - Jonny ripping into his guitar like - I am not sure if we've ever seen anything him do anything like it - was so great and then I watched one of the 3 live shows online. This final product is as great as I'd hoped.
Definitely fair and true to say that this album is better than some Radiohead albums. This isn’t just another relatively forgettable side project, this album is genuinely great, independently from its association with Radiohead.
I’d say I enjoy this album more than A moon shaped pool, and probably would say it’s a little lesser than In Rainbows but that is saying something. I love both AMSP and IR, AMSP for me has quite a few skip songs though, but this smile album despite being all over the place in sound, is so packed with songs that are just fucking great songwriting. It’s like Thom and Jonny have taken all their experience and musical evolution from Radiohead and their side projects, combined it and made it a bit more accessible, and out comes this album. Somewhere between an 8 and 9 out of 10 for me.
Great review!
I wouldn’t say it’s better than a particular Radiohead album. I’d simply say it is a Radiohead album, with all due respect to Ed, Colin, & Phil.
@@youmothershouldknow4905 for me I really like this more than the bends and pablo honey, and is on the level of radiohead albums
@@paranoidandroid9410 Yeah…it’s really good. I must say that I hesitate comparing the Bends to any other Radiohead album, since I hear it as the most anthemic album-which counts for, not just something, a lot-not an album to compare to the experimental albums this subsequent albums might be. The latest album by The Smile fits within the creative, experimental wheelhouse of the Radiohead world.
I had high expectations for this album and it's easily surpassed them.
wow love this sound, just ordered the yellow Vinyl, from my JB HiFi store in New Zealand. this should sound amazing on my new turntable. cheers.
This album just gets better with every listen for me. This was awesome to watch & I’m so excited to see you react to part 2 soon, which has most of my favorites! Aaahh
The first song, I’ve nailed the feeling:
Beginning of a movie - guy sees a UFO - can’t believe what he has seen. Camera follows him around for a few minutes showing his confusion and uncertainty about what he just saw
It's like In Rainbows and A Moon Shaped Pool had a baby.
Please dont take months with part 2, cant wait!
Update after 10 days:
I still cant wait, looking for a new upload every day
The Smile, easily the AOTY!!!! Maybe the best album of the last 6 years, arguably.
Glad you love the album. I saw The Smile in concert yesterday and they were incredible!!!
Yes, very happy with this video
I’m so glad you liked these songs like that! I love this album so much. Can’t wait to watch part 2 and see you react to Open The Floodgates.
Great video btw ♥️
The Smoke totally belongs in Better Call Saul my exact thoughts as well
Always great to watch you react to these songs dude. Thanks so much. Hope you’re doing good. All the best to you at uni.
Can't wait to see pt2, love your videos :)
This album’s better than I thought. It’s a nice change from Thom’s more esoteric electronica. It may as well be Radiohead.
Man, I want to hear more Jonny on guitar. Miss that.
Pana-Vision is my favorite from the album, it sounds so sensual and mysterious. The strings sound kinda Middle-Eastern.
16:04 you were so right because they played this song in the Tiny Desk live lounge lmao
excited for part 2!
excited for part two!
That was awesome! I really really love this album and I’m glad you like it so far!
Seeing them live in 1 week, can't wait
Loving these reactions
great stuff, always happy to listen to your unique thoughts
Thanks for the support!
Everyday at some point I’m like “what do I want to listen to today? Oops, guess it’s The Smile again.” lol I love what you’re saying about them getting a chance to go a little wild on this project. You can definitely hear them having a lot of fun on this album. I’m going to think about that next time I listen through. And yes, pana-vision is incredible!
Seeing them in 6 days. So stoked
Thin Thing and Skrting on the Surface are my favorite songs so far. Can't Wait.
The Smile and this album has totally got me hooked and inspired and feeling like I have found something good again. It's made me wanna write more different things for my band Powderedcows
Hats down. Dude you are the medium of the fiercest compassion known to animals. You aregood. Uiii
Please finish this haha. Love these videos
The Smoke is one of my favorite songs of the year tbh
I want to see more I am starting to really dig this album and I am still waiting for part 3 of the KOL from the basement I love that session.
This record *SLAPS*! How have you not done reactions to The Mars Volta or The National??
and the best 4 tracks yet to come.
I seriously can't wait to see your reaction to "Thin Thing"
Sounds like the outro to Identikit at 6:21
love this album
Part 2 coming in 8 months
Some of these sound like they do belong on "a moon shaped pool" great stuff!
This album needs build ups imo, many tracks could explode in really enjoyable direction, but still cool album with unique vibes
IMO the second half is even better than the first one. I hope you will agree.
Damn that would be impressive!
Pt2 of this one and also pt 3 of The King of Limbs from the basement.
You'll probably get a kick out of Morning Mr Magpie live.
Also the closing song of "the Smile" album is an absolute masterpiece.
Johnny, Thom, Skinner
from side B I really love 'A Hairdryer' ... looking forward to pt2
Thank God for TY’s Angst!!
Spot on review
This is one of my favourite albums of all time, probably on par with the best of Radiohead
Great!
I got big Muse vibes from the opener glad I’m not crazy lol. Might be my favorite from the album, it’s the song I keep going back to the most
Make sure you’re hearing the time meter right. The keyboard strikes are on the offbeat, that’s why the bass drum pulse is there to guide the way. Recommend starting the song :30 seconds in to catch it. A lot like the meter in Videotape. Keyboard strikes are on the & of the 1&2&3&4&.
Have you reacted to Thom Yorke's 'The Eraser' yet?
The second half may be better than the first half
listen to the same again, the kick drum actually is in time if you think of it as the one of the bar and the synths as syncopated
The first track sounds like Muse imo, like a mix of Take a Bow and Isolated System, never thought I'd be saying that about Thom Yorke music
Yeah I put in a bit of text as the song was ending that it reminded me of Isolated System, among others. Now that I see you said Take a Bow, that's the other song I was thinking of!
It sounds like muse because muse sounds like Radiohead
I think you’re hearing the time meter incorrectly my guy - the bass drum pulse is the one.
Good call on the 'Videotape' comparison for 'The Same'
part 2!
Ayyye yo, this is dope
I give the album a 7 or 8
I knew this was going to be good but it ended up exceeding my expectations by a mile.
The drummer from sos of kemet skinner.. Is the unsung hero in the making of this album.. His jazz druming is phenomenal.. Its Almost like an octopus is playing.. Hair dryer is a real gem.. Skirting on the surface is a radiohead leftover i believe but what a leftover.. And we don't know what tomorrow brings is almost indie rock masterclass.. Apparently the album came about because when tom did a call to arms for radiohead to record during the pandemic only jonny greenwood could.. So skinner was brought in.. Brilliantly... I think its as good an album as most and im going to see them. Here in the uk in June.. Manchester... Bring it on.. Theve done a few gigs and covered its different for girls.. By joe Jackson which was sneak recorded and posted on utube.. Which i watched.. Sadly it was taken down.. But it was awesome... Bring on your reaction to the rest of the album...
(also in case I get flattened by 'a ten ton truckkkk...' tomorrow, you have def GOT to do Jeff Buckley...Grace, AND Sketches, and you also HAVE to see/hear him on his Live in Chicago dvd...not a shocker this guy inspired Thom THE night he recorded his Fake Plastic Trees vocals)**
I hope this teaches you to dig deeper on a band you like. Radiohead/Thom Yorke have a rich discography
The Same gives me the feeling of being completely panicked in a city street but not being able to sufficiently interact/reach with anyone.
I’m here to represent the amazingness that is videotape.
Wait until you get to Speech Bubbles, you'll jizz yer pants man. Great stuff dude!
a bit of a mixed bag for me, but man, one song that stands out from all the others is Pana-Vision
seriously one of the best thom yorke songs period, just beautiful
Idk if you noticed this, but the main guitar riff in ‘the opposite’ is played in a round. the riff starts again before it finishes.
Glad pana vision is someone else’s favorite too
When are you doing part 2?
Nightwalk I'm glad you did a review of The Smile Album. The Smile project is Thom Yorke and Jonnygreenwood Only.
You should do a listening reaction to Thom Yorke ANIMA Album. Also off topic I was wondering If you have ever listened too
King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard ? ?
King Gizzard That is Rabbit role journey of its own from Psychodelic Rock to Garage Rock to Metal to experimental Metal progressive Rock Jazz fusion Electronic styles experimental blues Psychodelic Folk and more Sound-Scapes
2:25 Feelings of impending doom, danger, fear and anger
Pana-vision would make a sick Bond theme. Great reaction.
You have to react to Ants From Up There by BCNR
For the fans of ywnwita: listen to 'never fight a man with a perm' by IDLES
You Will Never Work In TV Again 💜🖤
In all seriousness, there is some amazing music from My Little Pony, both official and fanmade. i'd recommend "Open up your eyes" from the mlp movie and "The Moon Rises" from fanmade stuff.
thin thing tho 😳
it pops off fr o,o"
Thin Thing fuckin' rips, mate.
funny that you mentioned 2001 A Space Odyssey (it's my favourite movie lol) because their music sometimes makes me feel like that movie does
It's also Thom Yorke's favorite movie iirc.
@@reinerbraun2934 didn't know that, doesn't surprise me tho, he's based as fuck
Nope buddy. You got it wrong on “The Same.” The bass drum pulse is on the one, the keys are on the off beat!!!! I recommend starting it thirty seconds in. Follow that bass drum pulse. The vocals will fall into place when you get the meter.
I totally agree - I think shedding the weight of the Radiohead moniker let them loosen up and get wild on this one. Honestly, it’s exactly the direction I was hoping they’d do after Kid A/Amnesiac.
It's one of my favorites off the record! Great opener!!
Great album and a great reaction video! You just earned a like and subscribe from me! You need to check out (at least one of) their live performance(s) from Magazine in the UK from late January. They performed all of these songs live, plus two others (a Joe Jackson cover, "It's Different for Girls" and one of my personal favorite originals, "Just Eyes and Mouth". I can't BELIEVE it didn't make the cut!) that didn't make the album. I was lucky enough to see the performance (Show 2) live-streamed in a movie theater, and boy oh boy, was it a special experience!
I have high-quality videos of all three performances, as well as lossless FLAC auto of Show 1 (the best all-around, IMO). Please shoot me a message if you'd like me to share any of these with you, and I'll gladly shoot you a download link!
Anyway, great job! Can't wait to hear your take on the rest of the album! It's about to start getting REALLY good...
Hi Ryan, could you by any chance share the link with me. Huge Thom Yorke Fan here 😅. Thanks 🙏🏼
@@demo9732 Hey, I'd be happy to. Please just let me know what email like me to send the links to. I will let you know once I see your message so you can delete it.
Sorry Kendrick, this is the album of the year.
Panavision was created for the Peaky Blinders series.
oh yeah i love coldplay
wow
im so excited for you to see the last track of this album
@@mkdk_yay It's the one song on this album that immediately ranks among the pantheon of all-time great RH classics like Reckoner, How to Disappear Completely, and Pyramid Song for me! I feel so privileged that I got to see its debut in Dallas over 10 years ago! As great as that performance was, I never could have even begun to imagine the absolutely gorgeous and sublime classic it would eventually become... A perfect closer of a nearly perfect album! Best RH-related release since In Rainbows, IMO. I seriously freaking LOVE this album!!!
You should try Atoms For Peace. Thom Yorke and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Imo, way better than The Smile.
based on the other songs the smile are playing that didnt make the album i expect to like their second album better. unless they choose to save those for radiohead, in which case i will still enjoy it better. i like a few songs on this project, but it isnt as cohesive to me. my main issues are the production on A hairdryer, we dont know what tomorrow bring, and free in the knowledge. i heard a live version of free in the knowledge that took away the impact of the studio version for me. anyways, the new songs sound way more epic and fleshed out, these sound intentionally stripped back. anyways, weeeeeeeee
Oi!
its not radiohead 2.0 but radiohead lite
