    I wasn't expecting much of this record tbh and the first time I listened to it I was like "yeah it's alright I guess" but nothing special. As the days followed the instrumentals of every song kept popping in my head at the most random times. Decided to listen to the full thing a second time a few days ago and it clicked. Now I love it! This click ALWAYS happens in anything Radiohead related so I don't know why I still get all Pikachu face when it does. But it's always a great feeling when it happens. Speech Bubbles is my favorite song, probably up there with my favorite songs from In Rainbows and all.

      @@RustinChole this goes far back to ok computer days actually.
      Here's some text that shows skrting on the surface appearing as a lyrical link that appeared on radiohead's website during the ok computer period.
      "people aware, but not that bothered, as they skate along the shifting surfaces, parisien, huge, blue, grey, metal shine. i am sitting at a table in a destroyed room pushing cocaine around it shines like tiny diamonds. we are smuggling it in white cake
      caged birds accept each other.
      but flight is what they long for."

    • @RustinChole
      @RustinChole 2 года назад

      @@Sly34591 that’s a stretch. But ok buddy. Just cause he pulls lyric ideas from decades back, like any songwriter, doesn’t necessarily connect those lyrical scraps to the actual song conceived decades later.
      He wrote the bass line to national anthem at 16. What the song ACTUALLY became has nothing to do with the initial idea, in either case. People aren’t like “well national anthem was a song long before Kid A!”
      I don’t know if you’re a songwriter, but that’s how it works. You save ideas that serve as sparks. But the sparks in themselves are far removed, beyond any conscious actions on thom’s part, from the realized pieces. They might build a song around it later, but the quote you included barely has five words that tenuously relate, and nothing to do with the actual piece of music.
      Thom has STACKS of lyrical notebooks. It’s not surprising he’d glance through to find a cherry on top for a new song.

    The Smile create a Sci-Fi Soundtrack for modern day. Not sure if everyone is ready for it, but it’s landed regardless. Some will fully appreciate it in 2022. And many others will finally come aboard in 2042. One of the faults in some of the previous Radiohead side projects is the underwhelming use of Thom’s voice. Not so on this album. Thom certainly brought his A game, with stellar vocals throughout. And the atmospherics are just ridiculous. The way the classical instruments complement the guitars/drums/vocals is a match made in audio heaven! This is the album of the year. Whichever year you happen to be reading this in.

    This is a great album. But for me, it's not a Radiohead album if only because makes evident for me the importance of the guitar of Ed O'Brian or the bass of Colin for the sound of Radiohead. In The Smile there's not weird guitar noices or solid basslines. But we get more beautiful orchestations courtesy of Jonny and Thom strenghts are in full force. That's the identity of this album and it's very good for that, in my opinion of course.

    • @RustinChole
      @RustinChole 2 года назад +9

      Idk man. Imo the bass is pretty solid and there’s some pretty weird guitar sounds. It’s just leaner.
      Besides, thom wrote most of the most iconic bass lines anyways (like National Anthem).

    • @MM-vs2et
      @MM-vs2et 2 года назад +11

      I mean you still get weird guitar noises (see. A Hairdryer, Thin Thing, Skrting On The Surface), and solid basslines (The Opposite, The Smoke, Thin Thing, We don't Know). What Ed brings to the table is ambience, and background textures, which is replaced in The Smile by the brass and the strings and woodwinds. Ed really did all that shit by himself in Radiohead.
