- I'm back in Shropshire, with Phil, and we're exploring the lost industries of England.
Snailbeach mine and railway in Shropshire, was once the largest lead mine in the county with not only several different lead workings, but its very own narrow gauge railway system that travelled several miles to connect this remote location to the mainline railway system.
This area was mined as far back as Roman times, with evidence of Roman pig iron being discovered within the complex. and worked intensively up until 1911, when they stopped pumping water out of the mine, and allowed it to flood.
A group of local men didn't trust the assertion that the lead had been exhausted, and so continued to work the areas that remained dry, and explored other seams, all the way up until 1955 when time was called on Snailbeach.
The amount of remains left behind are incredible, and walking around the site was a great experience.
We have so much forgotten history in our nation, and it's a real pleasure to be able to bring that to your screen, phone, or laptop.
I hope you enjoy.

Great show, so much to see. Seems you found all of the working parts of a long terming mining operation. Glad to see the boots!
Haha. yeah I learned eventually!
Very picturesque. Loved the "gurt" in your definition of the wheel, very Isle of Wight! Greater spotted woodpecker l think.
Thank you!
Unbelievable scenes lol! Nice one chaps. Deffo a woodpecker your Jurassic park mystery creature of Shropshire haha! Either a great spotted, lesser spotted of green woodpecker, that’s enough ornithology for one evening. Oh and I love that opening music to. Cheers.
It was a velocraptor. Saw it out the corner of my eyes.
perfection amigo
Another cracking video, I had a look around these 30 odd years ago very interesting, keep up the good work 👍
Thanks mate. Has it charged much?
@IckeWalks Not really although it was more overgrown when I went well before the Lottery fund had tidied it up and put up notice boards, but you went to more places than I did, I didn't get up that incline would of needed oxygen to get to the top 😅
@ianbache8776 yeah i was puffing a bit!
Thats quiet a high site,if to walk from the Village Hall , all the way up to the top Chimney. Good place to visit and one could easily have a half day, there, roaming from section to section.
Really enjoyed it up there. Peaceful as you like
Fantastic video
As always hope you and gang well xx
All good. Hooe you are well!
@@IckeWalks not 2 bad thanks Gareth at least Phil’s arms recovered from all that rowing on other video 😂
Wow, what an amazing site, You seemed more out of breath than Phil.... but I know from climbing Helvellyn it was a tough climb, I'm always better going down!
Phil is a machine, but also, I don't shut up, which probably doesn't help!
@IckeWalks yeah that does come across 😄
Isle of Man is making itself present in my consciousness, never been - maybe you can give it a try & let us know?
Makes you wonder how they knew there was lead there in the first place. Putting up all those buildings and finding just enough lead to make a toy soldier would be my luck
Haha. From my experience inside lead mines, it's generally about a year before they even hit the seam, so some serious gambling.
Lesser spotted woodpecker. Black, red and white plumage if you ever catch a glimpse.
So it was a woodpecker!
The animal was the famous Shropshire Bigfoot! Shropsquatch
Thought as much!
Is it beach or beck?
