Tom - why you can get the PCIe-Gen4 drive on your X470 board is because the chipset isn't even involved. The M.2 slot is direct to the CPU. Where you will have problems is if you try to run RAID. Because there is only 1x M.2 direct to CPU. The other(s) are from the chipset. If you want RAID at Gen4 speeds, or for some reason only want to plug the drive into the slot from the chipset, you need X570
Hey Logan i bought asus crosshair 8 seems like excellent motherboard but im really cautious with that little fan, is it loud? do you think it can cause troubles in the future of its lifespan?
@@aoucelloutus3573 He already said it's virtually the same range on both X470 and X570. Even more it's also known that till 3777 you get IF multiplier 1:1 vs RAM so there is no actual point of getting higher at least regarding latency, which was the culprit of previous gen Ryzen. So I have very good feeling B450 is gonna be just fine in that regard.
@@rohanyadav9378 Hi, I'm really not too sure at the moment. I won't be purchasing my components until about September. I'm going to let the dust settle until then. @@Yellowswift3 but I am also hearing some news that Bitcoin prices are going up , buy your pc ASAP , else the prices of components will go up. Is it somewhat true?
I suspect subsequent bios updates on X470 are going to disable PCIe 4 whether its to justify the existence of X570, or whether there are genuine technical reasons why running PCIe 4 on older boards isn't safe, i think may be conflated
Only went from a 990FXA-UD3 and FX-8320, to a ASUS Prime X470 Pro and a R7 2700X last August. So I'm in no rush to upgrade at the moment. I need to see how the 3900X works with the Prime X470 Pro--and even then, I probably won't upgrade for another year.
I actually came to this review last, I considered all the ones I watched first to be homework so I could understand what would be said in this video a lot easier, as this is far more comprehensive and just better then the others as you have covered all angles and platforms.
AMD didn't give any 3800X's to any reviewers. As far as I can tell no one has one. I wanted to buy one but they are out of stock everywhere. I ended up buying a 3700X, but those are out of stock now.
Thank you for doing this, it makes Very interesting viewing! I am in the process of doing a new build for the first time in Years, man did I pick the right time!
the only thing i want to know is, how do i update the BIOS of an X470 board so it recognizes the new CPUs without having an old CPU. i heard stories about that being possible via USB, but i've never seen it done. Somebody do some YT tutorials maybe?
It's either two ways you request a CPU from AMD to help you update your bios or either you get it from USB however this way only works on certain motherboards so your going have to see if your motherboard can possibly do that
So this may be a stupid question, but what if you have an x470 setup and your motherboard dies? You aren't quite ready to do the full upgrade to an X570 upgrade, so you decide to buy just the motherboard at the moment. Will an older processor work in these newer boards? If so, would they run any better? My apologies if this has been asked already.
Thanks a lot for the detailed review, just a few wishes: 1. Please keep the graphs on the screen for a bit longer, with such amount of entries it's hard to find all interesting data in such a short amount of time. 2. Could you please check the PCI-E 4.0 SSD on Intel b360, z370, z390 motherboards and with Ryzen 1xxx, 2xxx CPUs?
thank you very much. Your work is appreciated. I wonder if new bioses will be produced for the x470 mobos in order to make 3000 series better IN THE FUTURE or make them available only for x570
Wow, information overload. Going to have to read the article to sort it all out. Curios about the NVME drive. There was talk about PCIE 4 being supported on some previous generation MB's at least for the first graphics slot and presumably the close M2 slot., but AMD nixed the whole idea because not all vendors boards could handle it. So will you see these NVME speeds on all x470/b450 boards or will it be hit and miss?
Asus B450 and X470 boards received brand new bios updates yesterday, my B450 E Gaming got bios 2406 dated June 21st. Check your motherboard support page to see if your board got an update!
Great review, and, things may change shortly regarding PCIe 4 compatibility with the x470 boards. This is from Paul Lilly at PC Gamer (June 3rd, 2019): "When final BIOSes are released for 3rd Gen Ryzen (AGESA 1000+), Gen 4 will not be an option anymore. We wish we could've enabled this backwards, but the risk is too great," Hallock added. Previously, AMD left the decision in the hands of motherboard makers, and some chose to validate certain models for the faster spec. Gigabyte, for example, enabled PCIe 4.0 support on its X470 Aorus Gaming Wi-Fi 7 motherboard. Based on what Hallock posted, support will be reversed in a later BIOS update. AMD provided a slightly expanded statement to our friends at TomsHardware. "Users today may find a PCIe 4.0 option available in their pre-X570 motherboards. However, users should expect this option to be disabled when final retail BIOSes are released to implement full performance and stability for new 3rd Gen Ryzen processors," AMD said.
I bought the x470, had some issues with bios and posting that i eventually worked through. Issues I'm having are my temp sensors are causing hwmonitor to fail and aida64 says there are none. Also noticing some sluggishness during operation. Is that possibly the board or the bios.
Since you'll be a guy that would get this, I'm wondering if for PBO overclocks especially the TR4 waterblocks will perform much better than AM4 on these chips? Due to the chiplet/io die design I'd think that especially the original AM4 contact plates may actually be too small now. Would love to see you test that.
@OC3D TV, @TTL great reviews and testing as always -- do you know if, *IF* Asus will be bringing out: X570 | (X470 Micro-ATX) and Mini-ITX versions? Their YT & website Motherboard line up doesn't appear to include these as of yet: 30/072019 (Today), any insider info you could shed? thanks in advance :-) only X470-I GAMING is listed currently :-(
The single core Cinebench graph is strange, focusing on Ryzen 3700X with X570, how does it only have 1 point between overclocked and stock? Additionally, wasn't clear to me, so the Overclock frequency are with the 200 Mhz offset only?
The cinebench results were all over the place because half of the results, (according to the graph they used), were from Cinebench R15 and half were from R20, and he didn't even seem to realise.... how incompetent!!

Where you will have problems is if you try to run RAID. Because there is only 1x M.2 direct to CPU. The other(s) are from the chipset. If you want RAID at Gen4 speeds, or for some reason only want to plug the drive into the slot from the chipset, you need X570
First time watching on your channel. Man, pretty long video but more informative than i expected.
You are one of the few to have done this on launch day. Congrats on being awesome.
thanks for all the efforts poured into this video! love your enthusiasm, very genuine. i'm making my first AMD build and this vid helped me a lot.
Thanks for the review. I'm in America, but like your unbiased reviews there in the UK. Keep up the great work!
Thank you for pulling long nights for me to watch this in-depth review
Hey Logan i bought asus crosshair 8 seems like excellent motherboard but im really cautious with that little fan, is it loud? do you think it can cause troubles in the future of its lifespan?
If you can do b450 testing, that would so AWESOME.
chipset NEVER makes any difference in performance. Same here.
That is true however, they said you can run higher frequency ram on 570 boards. @@arpakyna
Saw a video earlier using a b350 and the 3900x and it worked perfectly
4.267ghz all core out of the box
@@aoucelloutus3573 He already said it's virtually the same range on both X470 and X570. Even more it's also known that till 3777 you get IF multiplier 1:1 vs RAM so there is no actual point of getting higher at least regarding latency, which was the culprit of previous gen Ryzen.
So I have very good feeling B450 is gonna be just fine in that regard.
Love the colour/design of the background set, Tom. Great video. Looks like I'll most likely be going for an X470 + 3700X/3900X.
@yellowswift3 which x470 board will you buy, I am also going to buy a x470 , but really confused as there are so many options.
@@rohanyadav9378 Hi, I'm really not too sure at the moment. I won't be purchasing my components until about September. I'm going to let the dust settle until then. Check out as many reviews as you can and no doubt, there will be lost of upcoming tests done with motherboard comparisons in the coming weeks/months.
@@Yellowswift3 but I am also hearing some news that Bitcoin prices are going up , buy your pc ASAP , else the prices of components will go up. Is it somewhat true?
@@rohanyadav9378 I've no idea with regard to Bitcoin, it's not something I have any experience with.
I suspect subsequent bios updates on X470 are going to disable PCIe 4
whether its to justify the existence of X570, or whether there are genuine technical reasons why running PCIe 4 on older boards isn't safe, i think may be conflated
Best and first video.Glad to be one of the first one.
This is exactly what I was looking for to help me make my purchase! Thank you!
Have you tried installing a x62 kraken on the Asus ROG X570 Crosshair VIII Hero because the AMD bracket they supplied doesn’t seem to fit?
Only went from a 990FXA-UD3 and FX-8320, to a ASUS Prime X470 Pro and a R7 2700X last August. So I'm in no rush to upgrade at the moment. I need to see how the 3900X works with the Prime X470 Pro--and even then, I probably won't upgrade for another year.
So what’s the best x470 mini itx
board for my 3800x? Thanks.
I actually came to this review last, I considered all the ones I watched first to be homework so I could understand what would be said in this video a lot easier, as this is far more comprehensive and just better then the others as you have covered all angles and platforms.
I'm going to sub, just because you told me everything I wanted to hear. Thanks!
why nobody talks about the X3800 all the tests are done with the X3700 and the X3900 in EN/FR WHY ?
AMD didn't give any 3800X's to any reviewers. As far as I can tell no one has one. I wanted to buy one but they are out of stock everywhere. I ended up buying a 3700X, but those are out of stock now.
@@freefall5x Same here. 3800x didn't even go on sale, didn't see it in stock anywhere. Also bought 3700x.
Looking good for AMD. Got the ROG Crosshair hero VII, will fit a 3900X to it.
Yes
Ditto
Same
Am i in the right company here if i say i am on an i7 7700K and want to upgrade to what you have with the 3900X ??
You might need bios update though.
Its possible with some boards like MSI B450 Gaming Carbon AC. Most others need an older CPU.
It's either two ways you request a CPU from AMD to help you update your bios or either you get it from USB however this way only works on certain motherboards so your going have to see if your motherboard can possibly do that
Any chance you try the new CPUs (at least the 3600 and 3700x) on a X370 MOBO? Thanks in advance.
Excellent presentation as always Tom. I love hearing your insights, they help me decide to pull the trigger or not.
Thanks a lot for the detailed review, just a few wishes:
Press pause.
Did say I tested with a 2700x and it was normal PC IE3 speeds. You need a pcie4 cpu to get high drive speeds
My Hero! The comparison i was looking for...
thank you very much. Your work is appreciated. I wonder if new bioses will be produced for the x470 mobos in order to make 3000 series better IN THE FUTURE or make them available only for x570
Thanks for your hard work Tom - Great video, the first one I watched this Sunday afternoon. Cheers
Always the 1st reviewer I come to check out when new hardware drops.
Thanks TTL.
There is a lot of AWESOME info presented here! Thank you!
Interesting times for PC users! Thanks for all the work.
Asus B450 and X470 boards received brand new bios updates yesterday, my B450 E Gaming got bios 2406 dated June 21st.
Check your motherboard support page to see if your board got an update!
Thanks for all of your hardwork tom. Nice work.
Great review, and, things may change shortly regarding PCIe 4 compatibility with the x470 boards.
This is from Paul Lilly at PC Gamer (June 3rd, 2019):
"When final BIOSes are released for 3rd Gen Ryzen (AGESA 1000+), Gen 4 will not be an option anymore.
I really like the way u compared x470 and x570! hoping you'll be doing x570 and x670 once that happens
Would love to see you test that.
at 22:35 it´s the AMD Ryzen R9 3900X and not the AMD Ryzen R7 3900X
Very useful, thanks.
Great review! I'm so glad to hear that I don't need to switch my x470 board! All I need now, Is a 3700x vs 3800x video.
Ive asked AMD about a 3800X but they dont have any for press yet
28:23 I'm a bit dubious about those temp scores. 3700x - x570 = 44c vs 3700x - x470 = 63c ?
There's only a 2c difference not 19
Your review is highly appreciated, great job!
Great video.
Was looking for any x450 tests, got decent answers from with the vrm infro on this video.
Hero got vrm 2x2 ir3555 with 5 ir3599 can handle the ryzen 9 and som oc.
"Fixed idea of a matx build (need 1-2 pci) and save some on mb perhaps buy a ryzen 9."
B450M Mortar (well any decent matx)
RT8894A (4+2)
X470 ROG Crosshair VII Hero (WiFi/ac)
ASP1405I (5+2)
Seems like a risky vrm play will wait for some more tests.
Looks possible not gona oc anyway. and hero could handle that.
Learning about vrms now, first build in 8 years ;O
