Update: After speaking with Asus they believe the Prime X570-P ran cooler than the TUF Gaming X570-Plus because it has a better heatsink. The Prime features a slightly larger heatsink with more cut outs (fins) so it’s a little more efficient. This led me to believe adding a third power stage per phase doesn’t really improve efficiency and after speaking with Buildzoid this appears to be the case.
Basically, he said there’s little difference in terms of efficiency since the VRMs are already very efficient, we’re talking about a 1-2% difference here. He also noted that there's a pretty hard limit on how efficient a VRM can be, so the heatsink is making the difference here. So strange choice by Asus but I believe they wanted to market the TUF as a 12-powerstage board, as people take that to mean 12-phases.
Once again thanks to Buildzoid for his input, if you want to check out his channel link is in the video description.

FYI there's a small typo, the Asus Prime didn't use 'Level 1' LLC as that's not an option, I used 'Extreme' which is the highest LLC level. I actually mixed up the LLC name for the Asrock and Asus boards, anyway both used the max setting.

      @WereCatf 5 лет назад +12

Indeed! The surface-area makes or breaks a heatsink. Even a really big, fat heatsink can perform terribly if its surface-area is small, whereas a smaller, lighter heatsink can be a huge improvement just simply by increasing the surface-area with lots and lots of fins on it.
Not a lot of people seem to understand the importance of surface-area, though, or what it even means.

@stalker The failure was that two of the memory chips only got a half sized TIM and run much hotter than they had to. Gamers Nexus swapped in two full sized pads and the temperature went down radically. It's such a bonehead move no one can understand why they did it. The cost difference is so small that it's ridiculous. With any luck they've seen the reviews and changed it, but even so the damage has been done, and the only way they can get people to forgive would be by acknowledge that the made a mistake and that they've corrected it. But I wouldn't hold my breath.
Truth be told I don't expect this to cause much of a problem in normal use, but it might become a problem if you try to overclock.

@stalker As you can read from the comment below @

Yep MSI does seem to have dropped the ball on X570. Their lower end X570 boards overheat due to bad VRM cooling. Their midrange boards are meh. The X570 Creation had one of the worst boost results in recent Ruzen 3000 boost analysis and and the Godlike is both expensive and has nonsensical I/O and feature set for enthusiast board.
Oh and MSI lags behind others when providing new BIOS versions based on AGESA 1.0.0.3ABB. Others released this weeks earlier. MSI is still in Beta.
Plus they tried to save pennies with original B450 and then had to scramble and re-release thiose boards with bigger capacity BIOS chips that negated any savings from using the smaller ones before. Truth be told their BIOS is the biggest in size for some reason compared to others.

  • @boingkster
    @boingkster 5 лет назад +10

Looking at the Asus board with the at 4:56 and again at 5:30 you can see the VRM heatsinks with better cutouts, and what looks like pretty solid contact with the actual VRM - some of the others look like they leave it partially exposed. This would make a huge difference, as you saw. Possibly also the 'tough four stage' VRM may be more efficient that many more smaller stages, or at least output less raw heat for a given load.
Just saw you addressed this in your pinned comment, with input from Asus no less! Good stuff!

I pretty much blank them and for good reason. They can't make a good amd board to save thier life.
NOW you get some boards with amazing mosfets like the best you can get..but the bios suck.
Watch a buildzoid asrock video and no matter how good thier components choice there will *always* be a problem.
Even if the board is generally okay in build and refinement it'll lack features.
Like thier 990fx killer boards that pretended to be a 12 phase when actually they're just a 4 phase and people try and overclock on them (jayztwocents) and then they're surprised when the board and cpu die.
Does this look like a premium 990fx board like the crosshair5 and gigabyte UD7?
motherboarddb.com/media/images/Asrock/990FX%20Extreme3/990FX_Extreme3-1.pngUp until ryzen (so am2, amd2+, am3, am3+..) thier amd boards just sucked, MOST of thier boards they cheaped out and only had 5 sata ports and never fitted the 6th on £125 boards, If they're cheaping out on a sata port where else are they cutting corners? Bear in mind they started as a spin-off of asus, if you had money and wanted quality.....you might aswell just buy asus. if you dont then you might aswell be buying foxconn in effect.
Intel boards weren't so bad but thats because intel cpus drew sod all power and had the chipset integrated so the motherboard did nothing other than be a hub for the port to connect everything.
But for the most part the extra 5% you'd save by going asrock would come back and bit you in the ass.
Remember when rx480s were killing motherboards pcie slots? Asrock motherboards go look.
      Consider this... 2 of thier Z390 boards that you'd put a £500 9900k into have a 3 phase vrm.
They have another 3 boards running uP9521 chips 2 of which are a 4 phase and the other is a 5 phase.
Meanwhile gigabyte and asus are doing 6+ phases with doublers.
      Thats intel how about AMD?
MOST of thier 300, 400 and 500 series boards only have 3 or 4 phases, For x570 thier creator board uses an IR35201 in 6 phase and atleast it has doublers butt he rest are all intersil 4 phases with doublers, Not the end of the world but when Asus and MSI on the high end have 6+ phases with 50>60>70Amp smart mosfets, Gigabyte have upto 14 real phases, it leaves allot to be desired and when you're spending allot of money on a system and the competition (on average) does better for the same money you'd have to be nuts.

Although they have the same VRM, MSI A-Pro and X570 Gaming Plus have different Heatsinks. Gaming plus apparently has bigger sinks. Using the x570 Gaming Plus with a Noctua D15 I did some 90 minute testing on Prime 95 with a 3700X and the maximum VRM temperature was 51 degrees. In games it is maximum at 41 degrees. Using a 3900X it seems hard to reach 110 degrees in MSI gaming Plus, from 51 degrees to over 110 is too far away. Or does the 3700X to 3900X make such a difference for the extra cores?

How much Watt forces the board to get that high temperature? In my Case the temperature of the mos goes from idle 44°C to 62°C wich results in only +18°C for +(88-30)W = +58W of power. If it scales linear a 3900x with +(144-30)W = +114 should be at around 80°C. So your power input was at around 200W+?

Got the Asus THEN watched this vid. Glad I don't much like MSI, coz the board looks quite nice, and a great space heater.

Yeah unless you really need a super fast NVME SSD there are really no benefits to it, and they easily cost 2-3 times as much as the 300 and 400 boards.

Same here, so happy I bought the Prime X570-P after seeing Buildzoid's video. AMD recently said they are working on a new BIOS to fix the boost issue, but that probably only means it will hit the target boost clocks more often (or sustained at the boost clocks), probably not likely to go over the boost clock much as they have pretty much maxed it out already.

    Nice review !
Problem : I just helped a friend build a 3900x system and the motherboards options were very limited, forcing the choice on the MSI x570-A Pro ........ (lucky heh)
She has not really pushed it yet, for the 5 days she used it (I'm making her do various stress test / workload at this very moment).
This motherboard is set inside the CoolerMaster H500M (one of the best, I think ?) with a BeQuite Dark Rock Pro 4 cooling the CPU.
Should she just send it back, within the 2 weeks retraction period, or wait and see if any trouble arises ?
She's in a 20°c room all year long.
I'm feeling bad about the whole thing as I greatly helped her make the various choices ......
Thx for your hard work !
    Cheers from France :)

Steve, Gamers Nexus did a video on measuring voltage from the back of the motherboard besides measuring it in software.
As in, input 1.4v VCORE then measure the voltage with a voltage reader on the backside of the motherboard.
Steve (Burke) from GN found out that his Gigabyte x470 mothboard actually delivered more voltage to the CPU than what was instructed to it from BIOS.
So, I was thinking, could this be the issue with Asus Prime?.
Say you input 1.4v in BIOS, but the delivery to the CPU is actually 1.37v?
You could measure it from the backside of the motherboard with a voltage reader.

Watch the video more carefully, the performance of the board at peak temp was tested as well, if the board secretly uses less voltage but still provides the same performance, Asus should be worshipped for breaking physics laws

I keep harping... More FETS doesn't mean better performance... You don't want to operate more fets then required for a given power level. Usually that means more operational losses / heat. Buildzoid has had it wrong forever.
