Happy Birthday Ally! What a cute snowglobe; my cat-loving voice teacher would love this! He’s the only person who has had the privilege of seeing my larger Swiss music boxes, since I never let them leave the house save for going out for restoration, and he loved them so much that I got him his very own: An 18-note Reuge bell from 1976 that played Silent Night and a 1986 Enesco/Sankyo animated musical chest that played the theme from Haydn’s Toy Symphony as the toys danced to the music. We had been listening to a lot of Haydn last year since I play historical flutes and got a flute like in Haydn’s time last year, so I thought that tune would be darling … he loved both his music boxes, and I’m glad the movements didn’t freeze up like what generally happens with older movements with dried up lubrication …. ;).
BTW, San Francisco Music Box Company was my happy place as a tween in the 1990s (I already owned my original purple piano, a twirling carousel horse, and a pink rose in glass case that was a potty training reward) who loved music boxes. One time for my 9th birthday, Mom got me a musical carousel horse from there that played Happy Birthday, and soon several pieces from the store followed. It was there I also got exposed to Reuge pieces for the first time. When I would go window shopping with Mom there, I would look at the Reuge pieces similar to identical to what I own now behind locked glass, wishing I could own them and never thinking I would due to their high price. But dreams do come true, and a few years later after Mom and Dad bought me an 18-note Reuge for my high school graduation, I got my first big Reuge on eBay. Then my restoration technician started selling me fully restored pieces for amazing prices, and when I received my Amaryllis Reuge (4/50 movement), I was shocked that the case looked exactly like the one I had always wanted at San Francisco Music Box Company … but it had a better, older movement. That one is my best music box, and it was actually an extreme rescue abandoned by its former owner; it had a misaligned comb, and that is a super duper big pain to fix, especially for a changer movement in which the cylinder shifts for each song, but this master repairman got it right after a few months, and it was so worth the wait. And … this was the first music box I took to my voice teacher. I never take my music boxes for granted, and I thank God for them every day. Again, dreams do come true, and please keep making dreams come true for other people with your amazing work!

Hi Hillary! Thank you. We are happy that you liked the globe. We are trying to solve your emoji riddle. We have no experience solving emoji riddles but we think we have part of it figured out. We will continue looking at it and we will let you know if we figure it out.

Hey guys! Love the videos! I noticed the new snow globe water mixture include alcohol now. Did the previous globes without alcohol start showing yellowing of the water? I'm working on a project for my girlfriend now and was just wondering if I need to add alcohol to the water solution now. Thanks in advance!

Hi. We are happy that you are enjoying the videos. We have been using alcohol from the beginning, we may not have mentioned it every time. There have been no issues with any of the globes we have repaired going back over two years. The alcohol is in there to inhibit algae and bacteria growth. We are not sure but we are thinking that the glue in there would probably inhibit the growth of either, however, we use it to be on the safe side. Some manufacturers add up to 30% alcohol as a antifreeze which is good if you live in a climate that gets below freezing. When we looked for information on how much alcohol to use, every source we found said to "add a few drops of alcohol" which didn't seem like enough. We settled on 5% alcohol, about 3/4 or a cup per gallon, and it has been working fine so far. Good luck!

Is there any way to find out the date a snow globe was made of no stamps or identification tage on them? Thank you in advance.

Hi. Not that we are aware of. We do a Google search using as much information about the globe as possible. Sometimes we find the information but there is no standard way that we know of.

Hi, yesterday I was maiking a snow globe. Regretfully, while I was putting the rubber tap on the globe, when it sank completely into the water. I can't get it out. Please can you give me some clue, or do you have any video about this problem. Thanks a lot in advance

Hi. We have dealt with this issue on several occasions. You need two needle nose pliers and a long thin screwdriver. Grab the stopper with one needle nose pliers then use the other needle nose pliers to grab the stopper near the first one. Pull up toward the opening then while holding the stopper up with the first pliers slide the second pliers around the opening keeping one side of the pliers between the stopper and the glass. You can use the screwdriver like a shoehorn ahead of the second pliers and slide it around the stopper between the stopper and the glass to help pull the stopper up to where the second pliers can slide over and grab it. Hold the first needle nose pliers in place while you slide the other pair around to meet it. A second set of hands would be helpful. We have done this numerous times. It takes a little work but within a few minutes you should have it out. Good luck!
