  • In today's video we repair a Harry Potter solid base snow globe. We planned to have this one done for Halloween but we didn't make it. This one features Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, and Hedwig the owl standing around a boiling cauldron. The base is two books stacked on top of each other. One is titled History Of Magic and the other book is titled Potions.
    The figurine was detached from the stopper and sitting sideways in the globe. The water was a bit cloudy and had a lot of little white flakes flying around, most of which floated to the top. After opening the globe we believe the white flakes are from the super glue that was holding the figurine on to the stopper.
    We used the boiling water method to open the globe. It took 30 minutes and 3 kettles of boiling water to loosen the hot glue. We cleaned the figurine and globe with mild dish detergent and a soft brush and sponge. Some of the paint on the figurine was deteriorated and came off in the cleaning process. Ally repainted most of the figurine. We got the colors as close as we could. We use the Testors model paint for the figurines and so far has worked fine. We recovered the stars that were in the globe. We added fresh water, 30 percent glue and some Glitz glitter.
    The 30 percent glue works well with the stars and glitter and the overall globe looks really nice now.

    Thanks to your videos, I've been able to fix my The Snowman and Snowdog Christmas snow globe! The Snowman figurine had come loose from the base, I never thought it would be so easily repaired. This had been a gift so I'm pleased I could repair it. Thanks 😊

    I’ve just flown from the USA to my home country and I brought it over the flight and after I unpacked my stuff I realised that the base was detached/broken😭. It was so heartbreaking because I thought there might never be a solution to fix this. I was finding ways to fix when I found your video with exact same snow globe. I hope that I’m able to fix it like you did. Thank you so much for this ♥️

      @@snowgloberescue8887 are you sure the glass won’t break after I pour the boiling water? Also what type of glue should I consider to seal the globe back in and for putting the figurine on the base

      In order to prevent damage to the glass pour the boiling water up to the top of the base, keeping the glass out of the water. We have never had an issue using this method. For attaching the figurine to the stopper we use Zap-A-Gap, however, you could use Super Glue or Gorilla Glue. We have used both in the past and they appear to still be fine. We use hot glue to seal the rubber stopper.

    Thank you so much for sharing this I had repaired mines and my friends and family snow globe without solid base and this is what I need because most of my globes are solid base plus some my figurines flipped in inside even some are leaning and some of my globes end up having murky water. I collect globes. Can I find those fixer upper stuff at Hobby Lobby and Amazon?

      I'm happy that our video could help you. As far as where to find the fixer upper stuff. It depends on what you are looking for. You can find some supplies at the hobby shop and Amazon such as glue, glitter, glycerine, paint, etc. If you are looking for stoppers and globes there are links in the video description to companies that sell snow globe parts and accessories. If you need a stopper or a replacement glass globe these companies sell then as a set. You can't buy just a stopper or just a globe. You can also do what we do and find a used snow globe in good condition that has the same size globe and you can use that one for parts. Good luck!

    Thank you for making these helpful videos. My mother’s Christmas snowglobe lost all its liquid and needed repair. I was mostly successful, but have a question about the glitter. What I got at the craft store is not falling in my globe. It’s staying at the top. If I rotate the globe, it moves to stay at the top. What did I do wrong, or is there a special kind of glitter I need?

    • @snowgloberescue8887

      We have experienced that issues as well as glitter sticking to the glass. In our experience we found that after a few days and a few shakes the glitter eventually gets waterlogged and sinks but if it doesn't that may indicate that the glitter is not right for snow globes. We have used the Recollections line of glitter for almost two years and rarely have an issue. You can Recollections at Michael's or Amazon.

    Hi. I've watched most of your videos within the last week, and I LOVE them! I have a few questions for you. I'm going to repair just one water/glitter globe, not a bunch. So...
    1). For just one globe, how much isopropyl alchohol should go in the water?
    2). If there's going to be a break in time (a week or more) from taking the globe apart to putting it back together, should I keep the stopper in water during the break to keep it from drying out?
    3). I know you use Recollections brand and "larger" (not fine) glitter, but do you know what size it actually is?

      Hi and thanks for watching. We were never able to find an exact amount of alcohol to use but we decided to use one tablespoon for a single globe. Two years later they still look good. We read that some snow globe manufacturers use up to 30% alcohol as an antifreeze. The stopper will be fine out of the water. We do not see a size on the glitter bottles and we were not able to find information online, however, I believe what we use is considered medium size glitter. Good luck on the globe! I appreciate your channel so much! I decided to make a custom snow globe for my daughter for Christmas using a 3D print I made of our family cabin. I got so many tips from you guys. I actually 3D printed a stopper as well as we were concerned that we couldn’t get the rubber stopper in without destroying the cabin model/figurine. I probably wouldn’t do that again. I need to learn how to work the rubber stopper in place. Anyway, one thing I encountered was that more air bubbles appeared after the globe sat for a couple of days. Like there was some air trapped in the water that worked its way to the top. Do you ever have that issue?

      Hi. We are happy that you are enjoying the channel and thank you for letting us know. That sounds like an interesting project. We made a couple of custom globes. If you are interested, check out Episode 132 and Episode 123. The 3D printed stopper sounds interesting. Are you able to print a stopper out of soft rubber or is it hard plastic?

    • @erinjones8658
      @erinjones8658 Год назад

      @@snowgloberescue8887 I will definitely check those out. Thanks! I 3D printed the stopper with plastic filament. For the model/figurine part of the globe I used a resin 3D print as those allow finer detail. I made the stopper using the traditional filament type of 3D print. I basically modeled a hollow disc shape with a slight rim around the edge to sit on the bottom of the rim of the glass globe (when the globe is upside down). And I used silicon sealant to make it watertight. I modeled it with a hole in the center where I could insert a syringe to finish filling the globe with water. I did end up having quite a bit of difficulty with the filling though. I was left with a quarter-sized air bubble. And, I don’t think it is possible to get this one taken apart the way you guys can take apart a globe with a rubber stopper. So I’m not sure I would model the stopper again in the same way I did this one. I am planning to make more snow globes as I’ve had a couple of requests now from family members.

      @@erinjones8658 Interesting. I just realized that I did not address the air bubble question from your original comment. Yes, we sometimes get air bubbles after the repair. In some cases it is air that was either trapped in or under the figurine but in other cases it appears that there are sometimes tiny air bubbles floating around in the water that haven't gathered up, especially if we shake it up before we get the air bubble out. That is why we let the globe sit for a while before removing the air bubble, so that all of those tiny air bubbles get a chance to gather at the top. In order to get that air bubble out at this point I would say that you could drill a small hole just big enough to get a syringe needle through and then fill it and then glue something over the hole to seal it. We normally don't repair plastic snow globes but we used that method to refill a few, check out Episode 181. We used a Dremel tool. In your case you would want to drill the hold as close to the edge as possible where the stopper meets the glass, that way you have a high point for the bubble to rise to and have the best chance of getting it all out. Good luck on your custom snow globe adventure.

    • @erinjones8658
      @erinjones8658 Год назад +1

      @@snowgloberescue8887 thanks so much! Yeah, we did end up drilling a hole just the way you are describing. We couldn’t get quite all of the air out, but we decided to stop there. But I’m going to keep at it with my next project, and I will let it sit for awhile before we finish it up to let all of the air collect at the top. Then we will plug it up while it is submerged which seems to be the key.

    I have different Harry Potter Snow Globe that has a large air bubble, and cloudy water. However this one isn't as simple as just replacing the water as it has a pump to circulate what looks like lava lamp globs to come out of the cauldron, much like a bubbling potion! It does not mix with the water, its heavier than the water, sinks to the bottom and its green. I've tried looking it up but I have no idea what its made of in order replace/repair it. Snow globe is over 20 years old and i really want to fix it. Any ideas?

    • @snowgloberescue8887
      @snowgloberescue8887  Год назад +1

      Hi. We are not familiar with that globe, however, it sounds like you have an oil and water combination in that globe. The globe is most likely filled with mineral oil (baby oil). The green globs that come out and sink to the bottom is probably water with green dye or food coloring. Since oil floats above water, when the mechanism pumps some of the green water out into the oil the expectation would be that the water would clump up and fall to the bottom. Check out Episode 207 - Two Tiered Dolphins in the Waves snow globe repair video and you will see an example of using the oil and colored water together.

      Hi. You're going to fix your first snow globe, that's great! Also, thank you for letting us know that you are in the UK. It is always interesting to find out where people are watching our videos. I don't know if you guys have access to Amazon but you can find them there. If you can't find clear Elmer's glue you should be able to use any clear glue that is water soluble. The Testor's paint that we use is an enamel based paint. Acrylic based should work as well. What is important is that the paint cannot be thinned using water. The paint we use requires paint thinner or mineral spirits to thin or clean it up. Once the paint is dry water has no effect on it. There are some other options for your snow globe liquid, check out Episode 32 where we do a side by side comparison of the different choices. Good luck!

    I've made a discovery that I figured I'd share here concerning the alcohol in snowglobes. If you use too much (like I did because I eyeball it instead of having it mixed in the water already) it ends up creating these weird glass shard looking things I presume are from the figurines top coat. This has only occured in my San Francisco music box company ones but the classic treasures type seem to be safe from that happening. I know this is a bit of a random comment but it isn't talked about anywhere online so I wanted to let others who fix snowglobes know as well.
    The shards don't look particularly bad and are actually kind of pretty so I leave them there but it's definitely alarming to see what looks like glass when you shake a globe up after not having done it for sometime

    • @snowgloberescue8887
      @snowgloberescue8887  Год назад +1

      That is interesting. We have never found any clear information as to how much alcohol to add to the water. Everything we found said to add a few drops which doesn't seem like enough. Since we fix a lot of snow globes we have a gallon jug of water and we add 1/4 cup alcohol to the gallon and that seems to work fine. We have read that manufacturers use up to 30 percent alcohol in the globe water as an antifreeze. However, if there is no chance of the globe freezing then you shouldn't need that much.

    • @xbabybluex
      @xbabybluex Год назад +1

      @@snowgloberescue8887 I add way more than I should as a precautionary measure, my way of eyeballing never ends up being the same each time so it's either more or less (I buy gallon jugs of distilled water for it I just never think to add in the alcohol first). It is possible maybe it isn't because of the alcohol and the clear coat is just degrading off of the figurines now due to age I tend to buy snowglobes that are older but I only noticed the change after I added alcohol so I tied it to that

      Have you tried cleaning the glitter using the dilution method? You pour the globe water in a container and fill with clean water. As soon as the glitter or snow settles, pour the water out being careful not to pour out the glitter or snow, then fill with clean water again and repeat until you have clean glitter/snow.
