I was just saying that… dunno how they did others before PR wresting territory. They had superstars on all the time, even ric flair wrestled Carlitos colon in 1983. And chicky Starr is the most underrated heel ever. Dud was hella funny
Kayfabe here in Puerto Rico ran strong until probably early 2000's when the internet really started booming, but old folks still taught it was all real. I remember my grandfather crying one afternoon watching IWA on TV because "Glamour Boy" Shane was betrayed by Savio Vega and left lying in a pool of blood. He would also refuse to call titles by the conventional names of "championship" or "belt", he'd call them crowns 🤣
Yes. I’ve said that I can understand Jim Cornette’s sadness that kayfabe is dead, but also, if kayfabe still existed, we wouldn’t have all these behind the scenes stories of the business side of wrestling, and the hilarious stories from the road and the locker room.
Dutch was on the first house show I ever went to as a kid. It was a WCW show in Battle Creek, Michigan in the summer of 1990. He wrestled a guy in a mask named Starblazer. After he lost he got the microphone and said “I hate you people in Battle Creek and I hope you freeze to death this winter”. 😂 Good times. The man is a living legend.
Dutch was and is a legend in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 When I arrived there in 1992, he was on the crew but was leaving. My 1st show was also Three Kings 👑 Day. His recollections of his time there are spot on! James-you have a great podcast. I also host podcasts but mine are in sports. I retired from professional wrestling in the 90’s and have been working in the media ever since. You should book me. Look me up. Keven “The Truth” Casey. You’ll be glad you did!
For the record, King's Day (aka. Epiphany) is the day that the magi arrived in Bethlehem and presented the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus. It also is the beginning of Carnival season, which culminates with Mardi Gras.
Yes sir, and for the record, Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas (Dec 25 and January 6th but it goes longer) and back then they had an end of the year big show before the 25th and open season on Epiphany Day. I know because I grew up there 😃
Of the outsider heels that wrestled in the island, I think Eric Embry had major heat way before he did - as much as my memory serves me. However, Dutch did capitalize with his “despise” of the Island culture -specially because he started as a liked face and did a heel turn later.
1979-Los vaqueros locos-meaning Crazy Cowboys Dutch Mantell and Frankie Laine also Lane. Not WCCW Frankie Lancaster. Laine died 5/24/2016. Dutch Mantell of CWA wrestled Frankie Laine 6/1/86 UWF Bill Watts card
I think Dutch is too humble, because that streak from what I understand was 18 consecutive sell outs including I believe the Bithorn and Loubriel stadiums. Those were the days! Mid to late 70s and early 80s, with The Fabulous Kangaroos, The Funk Brothers Terry and Dory Jr., The Briscoes Jack and Jerry, Abdullah the Butcher with matches mid day showing stabs in foreheads with those forks, I'm telling you, it was special!!
Capitol Sports Promotions first two major "heels" were Gil Hayes and "Barrabas". The yhird one was " Cowboy " Bob Ellis , followed by Gorilla Monsoon and Abdullah the Butcher ( both managed by Hugo Savinovich) . Then we had Huracan Castillo sr. , and then came Dutch Mantell. So he was not the first major " heel " to wrestle for Capitol Sports here in Puerto Rico. He was like the seventh , really.
I'm not questioning what he did. I witnessed it. What l'm questioning is the statement that he made saying that he was the first major top " heel " Capitol Sports Promotions of Puerto Rico ever had, which he wasn't. Then he said that the Promotion had been around for two years and hadn't done any business before he got there. Firs of all , Carlos Colón founded the Promotion in 1973 with the help of his main associates then who were Victor Jovica and Gorilla Monsoon, who was their contact to get talent from the States, mainly from New York , which meant that they were getting help from Vince McMahon sr. and Eddie Graham through McMahon's help. The other thing that he said was that they were not doing business, which is not true because by 1978 they were having to put ringside seats to get as much fans inside the venues that they were running due to the amount of people that were showing up to watch the matches. I'm not saying that he is lying 'cause is possible that someone told him another story, but l lived and saw that . Before he came here in '79, they brought Andre the Giant to face Gorilla Monsoon in my hometown of Bayamón, PR , and Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium ( 16,000 seat Stadium ) was jam packed. That happened in October of 1978. I was 12 and l was there.
Konan said last month that zeb said when Scott Steiner had his heart attack in Puerto Rico to him saying do u trust this Puerto Ricans working on Scott? It’s was on disco inferno podcast last year and konan said that story because konan said zeb never liked him.
PR needs to be on the next season of tales from the territories
Definitely!!! I've never heard a Puerto Rico story that wasn't fucking nuts. I've been saying that since they announced the show
Really it should have been on the first season-but better late than never.
I was just saying that… dunno how they did others before PR wresting territory. They had superstars on all the time, even ric flair wrestled Carlitos colon in 1983. And chicky Starr is the most underrated heel ever. Dud was hella funny

God bless your Grandfather.
It's still real to me DAMMIT
Your grandfather sounds like my kind of guy! 💯
Wrestling is way more fun that way. Puerto Rico is one of the most underrated territories.
I remember "El Sucio Dutch Mantel" in Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 Great heel! Also Hugo Savinovich, great heel.
Im so glad that channels like this exist so that stories like this wont be lost to time.

I remember Dirty Dutch here on the island. It was 🔥
Hey James! That background is cool! Seriously, that's a cool looking room..
For the record, King's Day (aka. Epiphany) is the day that the magi arrived in Bethlehem and presented the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus. It also is the beginning of Carnival season, which culminates with Mardi Gras.

Dutch is right The original two Assassins Tom Renesto and Jody Hamilton wrote the book on tag team wrestling.

But the way he managed those angles and characters, it was different level

I grew up watching El Sucio Dutch. I still remember when I got a beating from my grandpa for saying wrestling was fake. 🤣🤣🤣
Tbh the people in PR loves el sucio.
Mick Foley looks so young in the thumbnail.
A "You People? mean nothing to me" tshirt would sell well today
El SUCIO DUTCH MANTEL legendario/Legendary TOP HEEL HEAT 🧲 in W.W.C
P.R Love’s to Hate you💪💪 🇵🇷❤️
"I didn't know what they were saying; it knew it wasn't good." LOL
I'm surprised Dutchs plane left America. The sheer balls to knowingly go as a heel in 79
